Southampton extend Michail Antonio's loan deal

More stories about: Michail Antonio

SAINTS have extended Michail Antonio's loan stay at St Mary's.

The Reading winger had originally signed on a one month deal that was extended until January.

That deal has now been further extended until the end of the current campaign.

Antonio has scored one goal since moving to St. Mary's.

he is out of contract in the summer - get him on loan till then, then sign him on a free transfer, good business by Saints

Good news. I must admit he's been a bit frustrating of late and perhaps hasn't improved as we would have hoped, but still a great prospect (remember when he came on for 2nd half against MK Dons and destroyed them). My choice ahead of Waigo anytime!!

I'm delighted that Saint's have extended Antonio's loan deal and the fact Reading have also agreed bearing in mind he's out of contract in the summer means he has no future at Reading? Antonio can be very frustrating player and has been at times this season and whilst he can't cross and his final ball isn't there yet AP and his coaching team can work and improve these aspects of his game and make him a better player, one thing he has that Saint's lack is blistering pace and that can't be coached into a player so it's another excellent piece of transfer business by AP. As Preston have signed Neil Collins a defender from Wolves it pushes Trotman futher down the pecking order and therefore be worth Saint's putting in a permanent offer for the young centre half, who despite some costly errors against Brighton was exceptional for Saint's and gave us more height/strength especially to our defence.

Whilst Antonio can be frustrating and his crossing wayward to say the least, he has pace in abundance. he also has a very powerful right boot. if we can coach it into him he could become a useful striker. COYR

Only good business if he actually learns to pass the ball. At the moment all we are seeing is a headless chicken running around.

Antonio is a good lad. A strong runner and he speads defences and creates space.
There really are a lot of people on here who would have been slagging the tenage Terry Paine off if the internet had existed in the 1950s, and Micky Channon (who used to get a lot of stick at The Dell for falling over all the time and being consistantly offside) would have been subjected to a "flog him now" campaign.
It's one thing to have an opinion, it's another to shoot your mouth (or typing finger) off about players when you know nothing about football. Alan Pardew may not be infallable (even Alex Ferguson gets it wrong from time to time) but he knows more about footballers than everyone using this site put together, so some credit where it is due please.

Good pace, not scared to tackle. Crossing can be coached.

I think AP needs to use Antonio more from the bench because his pace against tiring defences can be lethal. I don't think MK Dons will be looking forward to playing against him again in the JPT 2 legs. I hope he destroys them again like he did at home. That was one of the best games I've watched all season!

Yes he's not the finished article but we don't have as much pace throughout the team as some others so need all the quick players we can get!

Antonio is a very quick player but he's definitely not as quick or anywhere near as good as Papa. He is a good player to bring on away from home in grounds that hold 5-6 thousand, but in-front of the home crowd he looks too nervous and way out of his depth. He's an average league 1 player. I thought we wanted to progress and reach the higher leagues? Players like fonte from palace is definitely more like it! We need more quality in our defence esp full-backs tho. Harding is average and so is james, that's being nice! We need intelligent footballers at saints but afraid there are not many at all!

They are both young and have good basic attributes. Players like Antonio can improve with Saints.

You are clearly basing this on the Luton game because you obviously weren't at the MK Dons game at home when he completely changed the game in our favour and every attack down the right scared the living daylights out of them!

He needs to improve his crossing but then so does Valencia for Man U...it's the same with most players. Give him a chance...I know AP will and he'll get the best out of him.

I like Waigo too...and the fact that they are very different players gives AP a tactical edge during tight games.

This is based on every match he's played in. We've had a couple where we've seen potential agreed. I hope he does turn out to be a good player for the future and we haven't wasted our time on him. But for now Waigo should be starting in that position because he offers alot more.

Excellent post - absolutely correct. You cannot only buy the finished player every time but must have one eye on the future.
I would add the young John Sydenham to your list who could run at 100mph but could only kick the ball with his left foot. He made dozens of goals for Ron Davies with his speed and sweet left peg! Every one has to learn their trade some where!

I think there is often a payment due for those under 24 to compensate the club for the development costs of that player, but if Antonio has come from non-League and only joined Reading last summer, then I can't see how they can be entitled to any fee at all?

I see Antonio at the moment as an impact player to come off the bench and attack tired full-backs, like he did against MK Dons, he needs to develop a lot in my mind to warrant a starting place, needs much more end product.

Happy to see him here until the end of the season though, see how he goes.

We don't expect premiership players just players with more quality. We have money to buy better players. Lallana is too complacent because he knows AP will start him every game. Don't forget Lallana is playing out of position maybe he needs to be left on the bench for a game and let Holmes show us what he can do. I'm sure we'd get alot more goals with some decent crossing!

I've seen every home league match this season, where as I suspect you've only seen 2 Johnstone Paint games if you think Waigo is any good?!! Waigo may be quicker (too quick for the average linesmen as some clowns on here try to convince themselves!), but he certainly hasn't got a football brain. I accept Antonio is still raw with much to learn, but I think he has far more potential than Waigo who still hasn't got a clue as to how to time his runs (and yes, I grant you he did get it right 'once' against Exeter).

All he has in the locker is pace.

His decision making and final pass/shot is poor and when he comes up against a pacey full back, it renders him totally pointless.

He is good to bring on against tired defences (like the MK Dons match where his pace ran them ragged) but nothing more than a squad player who is not good enough to start IMO.

It's good to see mainly positive comments. Opinions are personal and we all have a view on what we would do if we were AP. We are not and thankfully so given some of the total rot that some spout. AP is bringing together a team that he feels will work together. We have not had that for some time. All players have their ups and downs during a season so we should not get on any single players back. If the team lose then the team lose. If the team wins then the team wins. No single player should be singled out for special glory or criticism unduly. I have been to most games this season and have seen very good aspects of all of our players from time to time. In my opinion the only thing lacking is consistancy. Come on you reds. SW GOAL-LAND that is so true for Saints :)

Yikes, thought that rumour had been put to bed....errrr :? Good news on MA, he is young and has his flaws as he is learning his trade, the young Danny Wallace when he came through was equally amazing in spurts, ineffective in other attacks, so time will tell. It's obvious he wants to stay otherwise the headline would have been MA returns to Reading, the team spirit must be good and still gelling so keep it as settled as possible, though a new CB, RB, LB and CM would also be handy....hmm which is a contradiction...sorr

He may well need to improve but so does every young lad who is currently playing for Saints. I suppose you two faced supporters were singing his praises when he changed the game against MKDons and then tore Bristol Rovers apart in the Cup? This is a good bit of business by AP. He now has another six months to look at Antonio before committing. I pray that the Pericard rumour is no more than that. The guy is awful!

Well im glad we`ve extended his loan and hopefully with time he`ll improve his ball skills and decision making but at the moment you are dead right and he`s really only useful as a sub,at times in recent games he`s been more of a liability and it`s like playing with 10 men.I`d love to see Holmes get a chance, because although he lacks Antonio`s pace,he is probably much more of a team player, who would make our midfield look more solid,im suprised AP hasnt at least given him 5 or6 games to prove himself.

Alan Pardew may not be infallable (even Alex Ferguson gets it wrong from time to time) but he knows more about footballers than everyone using this site put together, so some credit where it is due please.
That goes douple for the idiot "journalists" featured here as well!
Spot on Captain.
Though remember if part of the team at the Echo didn't fight from within to cover lower league and non league football the parent chain would drop it altogether. Similar in a way to Solent being our only real cover for the game for we overseas fans.
I'm grateful to The Echo and BBC Local for the Saints coverage and for news from my home town.

I'm not relishing having to watch Pericard again in Saints shirt as I also thought he was awful last time around.
He was however playing in an awful side in the Premier league which may have made him look worse than he was.
He has been a bit of an inspiration since joining Carslisle and if he can do a job in League one for us like he seems to be doing for Carslisle than maybe he might be worth a punt(maybe being the operative word and add a bit of APs wisdom who knows?) I'd still like a decent proven CCC striker and midfielder or better as would most us Saints fans but the transfer window has only just opened and normally the better deals are done towards the end of Jan. Who's to say AP doesn't go transfer crazy in the next few weeks.......hope so COYR!!

I'm not to sure about MA yet. He has alot to learn especially with his final ball and finishing and wonder if he is ideal for us if we are indeed going to push for a playoff place.
He'd probably be a good squad player but that wouldn't really be good for all three parties (us, him and Reading) He is quick and there's no disputing the fact but so is Holmes and Mills and they both aren't good enough to get in the side.
I totally agree with the patient approach and planning etc but you don't get out of this League with fringe players and the longer we are in it the more the novelty will wear off and the fans will become a little more tetchy to say the least. If the management feel we can push for a play off place this year then why not commit to signing a few decent players that could help us achieve it and go for it.
The worst that could happen is that we may just fail but will be well equipped for a second season which we should then get promoted(touch wood) plus we'd have given it a right go and the fans would be right behind the team as they have been so far this season COYR!!

Readers and regulars will know that there are one or two members of a boo brigade associated with every club. Our one or two have several different user names Personally I'd rather have honest enemies posting here.
Do your best to ignore them (repprt them if they abuse or insult) and enjoy reading the sensible support for a Great Club on the rise.

They say that January is the peak time for divorces. seems to me that a few people on here could be heading that way, if the bickering that has very recently reared it's ugly head again, is anything to go by.
Some people don't like being called "newbie", stating that they have followed the Saints for years, but from my angle the term "newbie" is referring to the many new user names that are posting on here, names that weren't on here when things were less volatile.
Others think they are being called skates because their point of view is different to others. Again, from my angle, you are being called skates, not because you have a different point of view but because some of you are being abusive and offensive in your comments, and appear to be deliberately seeking a confrontational response.
Calm it down guys!

I personally am glad they have extended Michail Antonio's loan deal, although not the best of players as yet to grace our , but shows determination and guts when he has the Saints shirt on, with the academy coming on - even better, i am sure and hoping Michail will flourish and claim a starting position all the time, good to hear Alan Pardew is in the market, personally i am a happy Saint looking forward to a bright future, things really are looking up at the moment, AP - is the man to take us to the next levels - i am as i have said one happy season ticket holder !!! P.S. not interested in the comments made by the few Poortsh!te posters on here, best to not respond to any of them, they'll eventually go - and any ways they should concentrate on their own shed and problems - apparantly they have one or two at the moment. Tye-Dye, don't even get drawn into it or them, ignore them and they'll go somewhere else and play, this is a Saints Forum for the Saints Faithfull, and coming to think about it - i thought this thread was about discussing the extension to Antonio's loan deal - Curious Chimp
You are right of course St. Curious, and I have posted my view already about MA if you read the earlier threads above, I hope we end up signing him on a permanent basis as he is a very good prospect, and will only improve as we progress into the Champs and eventually the Prem. As for the idiot pair, some of us on here have had to deal with their ilk since May last year, it has been extremely tiresome, the respite since October when the Echo Mods jumped on it put this forum back to a respectful place to post, but alas it appears some of our posters on here went onto the blue few echo forum and wum'd again, so the consequence now as was then is we get the morons from there coming on here under all manner of guises. The true Saints fans on here are obvious in the way they respectfully post and the input they provide, you have to deal with the morons at their base level unfortunately, its the only way they communicate. Give it time and they will get bored and go away again, or the Echo will ban them, then we can get back to all things Saints, hopefully that wont be too long?

I just checked out the Veil Nebula... watch out Tye Dye could use the Witches Broom to sort out offenders.

Every one should enjoy the ride that Pards is taking us on..fun exciting and it's going to see us on the path to winning the play offs. That has to be the ultimate dream for this season and fans can feel it happening... or not. I can.

Hi Tye-Dye, I agree with you !!! i spend a lot of time reading through the various posts .... sad i know, and its good to hear peoples opinions on certain subjects - whether i agree or not, i really am feeling proud and can hold my head high again as the Saints start to rebuild and the fans unite, i was not sure up until ML saved us and the appointment of AP that we had hit the bottom yet, but half way through the season i can proudley say as a Saints supporter i am proud to be in the position we are in. The Club is in a healthy position and i am confident in the club once again - in that we have the correct people installed (who have a 5yr plan) i also believe that with Staplewood once it gets up and running to the standard that NC wants - will be excellent for young players to develop and break into the first team - this will take time i thinks !!!! i am dribbling on too much, but to end, i believe we have hit the so called bottom now and are on the UP !!!! Another day not even looking at the pile of books I should be reading! Educational theories and professional guidelines my a£se! Far more interesting to see what happens when a raja batis finds itself in the wrong environment! Do not poke, leave well alone! If the cold snap continues then Saturday looks dodgy! pitch ok but outside ground will be interesting. especially after a couple of zulu beers!

Oh NO - the return of "I'm a better fan than you brigade". Just be pleased we are the chosen few who are clearly the best fans of the best club on the south coast! By the way I believe exiled Saints fans across the UK and the rest of the world care as much (or even more) about the club. We are the Elite Saints Fan Club. As for people from Southampton they clearly don't care enough! SW - fair-land - are you talking about the East Riding again?
I am a better Saints fan than all of you because:
1) I was a fan before I was born.
2) I have changed my name by deed poll, to include the first, middle and surnames of the entire 1976 FA Cup winning squad, and
3) I have had every other tooth enamelled red, and my bottom lip tatooed black, hence my smile is like a Saints kit ;->
For the record, I think Antonio is a useful player. Not the finished article, but with the potential to improve a fair bit.

Sussed me Dan lol, I love the Veil but the Eagle is even more beautiful, check out the Large Magellenic Cloud on the Hubble website, truly mindblowing and makes our single star and solar system look extremely tiny. With you 100pc on the speculation, great fun and with all the possibles everyone is providing, its great to Wiki them and see where Pards is thinking, fingers crossed for a signing or two this week, and if they are the possibles that fellow posters have provided then we will have strengthened as needed, snowy here hows Tirau?

You want pace go and sign Usian bolt.

the lad is totally out of his depth at this level he would be a liability in the championship, Ive seen gary neville deliver better crosses.
