Southampton hoping for bumper crowd against Huddersfield

SAINTS will be hoping for another bumper St Mary’s crowd this weekend after attracting one of the highest third division attendances of the last 38 years on Boxing Day.

A remarkable 30,890 packed into the stadium to witness the 3-1 win over Exeter recently.

The Daily Echo can reveal that only four clubs have managed a higher attendance in the third tier since the start of the 1972/73 campaign.

They are the two Sheffield clubs – whose massive crowd was for the cross-city derbies in the same season – Leeds and Manchester City.

Saints’ Boxing Day crowd was the 14th largest in the third tier since August 1972.

FA Cup heroes Leeds have had six League One crowds higher than Saints had against Exeter – the largest of which was the 38,256 who watched them beat Gillingham in May 2008.

Their second largest attendance was the 36,723 for the Yorkshire derby with fellow promotion hopefuls Huddersfield last month.

And it’s against Huddersfield this Saturday that Saints are again hoping to pack the fans in to potentially give Alan Pardew a financial boost in the crucial January transfer window.

The highest ever third division crowd remains – and certainly almost will – the staggering 49,309 who saw Sheffield Wednesday thrash cross city rivals United 4-0 on Boxing Day, 1979.

The Owls only had 11,530 for their previous home game, and only 13,287 for the one immediately after.

Just as remarkably, the return game at Bramall Lane in April 1980 was watched by another 45,000 plus gate!

A crowd of 45,156 was some 25,000 higher than any other third division attendance at the ground that season.

Wednesday also packed in 32,734 for the last game of that promotion winning season, against Carlisle at Hillsborough.

Aston Villa had held the record for the highest ever third tier crowd – 48,110 against Bournemouth in 1972.

Villa do hold the record for the highest third division average in the last 40 years.

They averaged 31,952 during their promotion winning season in 1971/72.

Among their crowds were 48,110 v Bournemouth, 45,953 v Walsall, 45,567 v Chesterfield, 41,518 v Bristol Rovers and 37,582 v Torquay.

Away from home, their game at Notts County was watched by 34,208 while 20,305 were at Bournemouth.

Prior to that, Notts County averaged over 34,000 when they won promotion from the third division south in 1949/50.

Their highest crowd was 46,000 against city rivals Forest.

Stats, stats, stats. Did you know my new Epson printer is the 3rd fastest I've had in 17 years, and get this - the FASTEST one that has a sticker of a banana on it! Amazing eh.

Seriously, is this something to be proud of? All this does is emphasise just how far we've dropped. We're in a league well below our capabilities.

But we know all that.... let's not dwell on it. I will break out of my Grumpy Shell now. Bring on the Hudds game! :-)

I hope it is not called off and it would be nice to see the ground packed again! I would hope that the transfer market would not be tied to the numbers attending the games and are new owner willl give up some cash to bring in more players to help us push on to play offs.
we have 22 games left to play to make 76 points we need to win 16 of these games or more so have we got the team that can win 16 out of 22 games?? this is the biggest question

Agree with Tye Dye, with the temperatures still being so cold, and more snow to come, the pitch might be okay but the paranoid health and safety people will worry that us fans might slip over on the concourse outside the stadium, and therefore seeing as we aren't grown up enough to decide for ourselves if we can make it to the match or not as we did 'in the old days' , they will call it off on our behalf anyway.

Mate who's a steward Bill, the Freddie Eastwood is a possibility, the Elliot Ward is much more credible. If they come off we can all be very happy bunnys. He doesn't post on here because of a lack of serious regulating by the Echo, I am beginning to agree with him after the last couple of days when truly decent people on here have been attacked, when it was obvious they were not even Saints fans who were attacking, ridiculous.

We all know who they are Tye, they will leave as quickly as they arrived, once they get board and the schools reopen. If Eastwood was to sign, would it mean Connelly would be a super sub/ cover for injures. I just cant see that, something will have to give

This weather will also slow down transfers as, to state the bleedin' obvious, travel is difficult, so medicals etc will be delayed. Could lead to some gazumping as well, if agents continue to tout their players around whilst waiting for transfers to complete.

With the stadium issues, when we reach the premiership which shoudl realistically be in 5 years, and if we stay up on the first season. Then the option to expand the stadium to 40,000 will be a good idea and a smart one, but not until we assamlise ourselves as a premierleague club. And who knows we could still host some world cup games because I don't see Plymouth getting a new stadium in the state they are in. They are supposed to be one of the stadiums but hopefully we can take their place if England are successful.

Transfer wise I would love to see us sign at least two players whether that is Freddy Eastwood and Elliot Ward or Lee Barnard and Jose Fonte or even Vincent Pericard. My gut tells me that I think we will sign Jose Fonte and Vincent Pericard. But I would love us to sign all 5 really but not to sure about V.P because of Pompey, might just be there for the money, but I'm sure A.P will get him up for it. We do need a Centre Mid though Chris Lines please.

Looking forward to tomorrow, day off school, finished my homework today so a relaxing day at home, hopefully hearing some good news about Saints transfer wise and some bad news with Pompey money wise.

Love it!

Hi Dan, with you on the Barry White issue. Not sure that we are a "walrus of love" type club! Looking forward to seeing what the new signings will be though. (Checked out your images, by the way: respect!! What were they taken on? I've been thinking of getting a DSLR, but not sure of what to do, I still have an old Nikon FE!)
still got my black and white polariod, does me !
Cheers: Get a second hand Nikon D200 with 18-200.. good gp for bucks.

Lol I reckon we're a bit Paul McCartney .. happy rocky and always on a mystery tour and hate John Lennons hippy types.. but I'm sure Conners will get us rocking to Thin Lizzy as there's more spirit in the jar and the breakout is on

Like the idiots who think because I live in Gosport I must be a skate. If only they knew how difficult it has been being a saints fan and living in a PO postcode. Easy to be hard when you live in Shirley. Not that there is anything wrong with Shirley

I know what you mean.. I looked at maybe moving near whiteley, but the PO postcode did make me think hard! Anyway, it takes more character living amongst people who hate our club!! I went to fareham last sunday god knows why, and I kept trying to say out loud how I hated pompey, just so they would know I was a "scummer!".. I am proud to be a saint..pompey fans are vile!

Defo Thin Lizzie on the the music front: we'll be singing " The Boys are back" in the CCC and then the Prem!!

Saints are hoping for a bumper crowd on Saturday!
Wow!
Really?
Amazing!
How many years of specialist training and experience does anyone think it takes before a sports journalist can come up with that sort of searing analysis.
Or was it just a lucky guess?
Perhaps Simon Carter would be kind enough to tell us what games Saints do not want bumper crowds to attend this season?
Only I have a season ticket, so I’d like plenty of notice so I can plan a worthwhile alternative to watching a game I’ve already paid to see.

Match will be postponed.

Pretty cold here here this morning.
Resigned myself to the fact that I won`t be working for a couple of weeks. (Bricklayer)
The match looks uncertain for Saturday, forecast for cold easterlies, temperature barely getting above freezing.
As was pointed out in an earlier post, the pitch may be playable but the walk up to the stadium may be deemed unsafe because of lying snow by the Health and Safety bods, it does make you wonder how we survived the 1970`s - 80`s and earlier, without these H&S bods holding our hands?

All quiet so far on the transfer front but wouldn't be surprised to hear some news before weekend.
As has also been pointed out earlier, if the game was postponed, it would help the players recovery and rest up a bit, and if AP does manage to bring in a couple more new faces, it will give them a bit more time to bed in on the training ground........

Right on Paul.. Memories of virtually skating to skool in the 60s ans hammering together wooden sledges. Snow men at Peartree Green with big apendages and filling the phone box with snow... oops that was er um

The hardware shop had studs to bang into the soles of shoes that would stop you from sliding while we played footy with snow goal posts... lol until the snow melted then you get 30ft out of a running skid.

Just watched what the Japanese have been doing with the snow.. what a tourist attraction.. building and magnificent ice sculptures.

Come on Paul get the kin making ice bricks and build something brilliant.

We'll all go nuts with no game on Saturday..

Gym time for the team I guess and much needed therapy for some aches and pains.... Better not hear any stories of the lads in night clubs.. those stories seem to have dried up under Pards leadership.. the pride has returned.

Let's be honest Leeds are a much bigger club than Saints - why would he leave them to come to us?
Let's get real he wants to go to Newcastle, demand Premiership wages because they look certs to go up this season.
On the reverse side of the coin Leeds without Beckford may just faulter and they may not be certain of going up!
