Two rescued from blazing boat in the Solent

TWO men were plucked from the wreckage of a luxury motorboat after it caught on fire in the Solent today.

The pair had just taken delivery of the new 34ft Meridian motorboat when a blaze broke out just off Calshot Spit shortly before 1.30pm.

The men were alerted to the fire by blue smoke pouring from the exhaust.

There was no time to send out a distress call and both men abandoned ship and got into the boat's liferaft.

The pair, who both sustained injuries, were rescued by members of Calshot RNLI lifeboat crew.

The men, who had been on route to their home in Rye, Sussex, were met on the shore by an ambulance which took them to Southampton General Hospital.

As reported, i) "TWO men were plucked from the wreckage of a luxury motorboat"

Mr Carson, surely they were either plucked from the wreckage or they were taken from the the boats liferaft, one or the other.

Maybe the liferaft was amongst the wreckage!

abandoned ship ! rescued ! . The boat caught fire and they got off it in their liferaft - big deal . They were on the flat , calm Southampton Water not the middle of the Atlantic Ocean .
I'm now waiting for some nautical nobends to lecture me on boat safety and other boring crap .

Did you know about it before reading it in The Echo?

If you did not, then it was news, which is what a newspaper is all about!

As there is such a thing as hypothermia, and also cases where people have been known to drown in 6 inches of water, the fact that it was calm in the Solent, is neither here nor there!

I think that your last two words sums up your comment quite nicely!

This wouldn't have happened on a yacht, the crews are far more professional and vigilant. These incidents happen 95 per cent of the time to motor boat users, whos skills tend to be sadly lacking in comparison to those of yachties.

One has to work harder if you end up in The Solent instead of on The Solent.

I'm not a nautical nobend but I did witness this event this afternoon. From the point when white/blue smoke started to show from the rear of the boat until it was belching black smoke and engulfed in flames took about 4 minutes. So it wouldn't have mattered where they were, Southampton Water or the Atlantic, the dangers would have been the same. In addition, two men escaped, sadly injured. For goodness sake have a heart. It could so easily have been so much worse in terms of the human cost.

The only sensible comment I can see here is from 'eye witness, netley.' These fellas were experienced sea men who escaped by the skin of their teeth, suffering burns to their skin, hair & clothing!! From what I saw...and filmed on my mobile phone the emergency services did an excellent job responding to this incident..as usual!!

Thanks exalt1! As you rightly say, an excellent response by our emergency services. I think it's also worth noting that the two men on board had no time to call a Mayday as events overtook them so rapidly. Is that your mobile phone footage shown on this site?
