TWO men were plucked from the wreckage of a luxury motorboat after it caught on fire in the Solent today.
The pair had just taken delivery of the new 34ft Meridian motorboat when a blaze broke out just off Calshot Spit shortly before 1.30pm.
The men were alerted to the fire by blue smoke pouring from the exhaust.
There was no time to send out a distress call and both men abandoned ship and got into the boat's liferaft.
The pair, who both sustained injuries, were rescued by members of Calshot RNLI lifeboat crew.
The men, who had been on route to their home in Rye, Sussex, were met on the shore by an ambulance which took them to Southampton General Hospital.

Maybe the liferaft was amongst the wreckage!

abandoned ship ! rescued ! . The boat caught fire and they got off it in their liferaft - big deal . They were on the flat , calm Southampton Water not the middle of the Atlantic Ocean . I'm now waiting for some nautical nobends to lecture me on boat safety and other boring crap .

From the point when white/blue smoke started to show from the rear of the boat until it was belching black smoke and engulfed in flames took about 4 minutes. So it wouldn't have mattered where they were, Southampton Water or the Atlantic, the dangers would have been the same. In addition, two men escaped, sadly injured. For goodness sake have a heart. It could so easily have been so much worse in terms of the human cost.

The only sensible comment I can see here is from 'eye witness, netley.' These fellas were experienced sea men who escaped by the skin of their teeth, suffering burns to their skin, hair & clothing!! From what I saw...and filmed on my mobile phone the emergency services did an excellent job responding to this incident..as usual!!

Mr Carson, surely they were either plucked from the wreckage or they were taken from the the boats liferaft, one or the other.
