Portsmouth FC announce 85 members of staff made redundant

More stories about: Pompey

PORTSMOUTH Football Club have made 85 employees redundant.

However, the club's CEO, Peter Storrie, who reportedly earns £1.4m a year, remains at Fratton Park, but has taken a 40 per cent pay cut.

Click below to see a video of today's headlines in sixty seconds

The redundancies have been made by administrator Andrew Andronikou, as part of desperate attempts to reign in costs at the beleaguered club.

Staff who remain at the club have agreed to work fewer hours.

However, the players have not had their pay cut, as they are protected by the PFA.

Mr Andronikou also claimed the players are the 'shop window' that can be used to sell the club, so making them redundant would harm the chances of finding a buyer.

See tomorrow's Daily Echo for the full story.

I feel sorry for the run of the mill workers who have lost their jobs, but there can't be any sympathy for the rich players and boardroom staff who wont have to worry about paying their fuel bills - whatever happens.

The players should give out some redundancy to the poor staff that suffered because of a greedy club

Nice work if you can get it.
Anyway none of this mess was his fault, he's only an employee of the club.

Unbelievable........

Surely his first job should have been to send all the loan players back. Seeing as over half the first team squad is on loan that alone would have saved in a month what 85 employees earn in a year

I see the Storrieteller kept his job, he certainly knows where to hid when the brown stuff hits the fan

For the life of me, I don't understand how he could keep his job, I suppose when he get's locked up for his personal dodgy tax dealings, it will save the Skates a redundancy package.

Loan players should be sent back to their parent clubs.

Unbelievable. Who actually goes out and gets beaten every week? The Chief Executive? On which set piece did he fail to pick up his marker then? Pompey are bottom of the table even without the 9 point deduction thanks to the players, yet it is not their fault? They get paid huge sums plus all the hidden extras that are never talked about - they effectively get win bonusses whatever the score, they pick up quarter of a million just for signing on, ( "signing on fees" are incredible) - they get their contracts paid up when they quit the club early..... they get paid even when they are sent off or suspended - it goes on and on and gets worse and worse. Compare and contrast this feather duster attitude to the preened and pampered premiership players whose greed is destroying football, and the attitude of people to bank workers, many of whom earn less than £25k pa and are begrudged a 5% bonus for a mess they didn't even create. No sympathy there eh?

"The club had in its employment 166 full-time staff and approximately 154 part-time staff.

These numbers exclude weekend part-time match day staff."

I am not surprised that they had financial problems!!

Why are we all having sympathy for the staff at portsmouth, in fact, why do we have any sympathy for them at all? it was them (Portsmouth fans) who laughed at us when our staff were made redundant, it was THEM who laughed at our financial plight, rubbed it in, hoped we went to the wall... they were all on this site rubbing salt into the wounds. So why oh why do we have sympathy for anyone associated with them? we should enjoy the fact that they could be going out of business, and i wont hold back from gloating once they do. I hate em, hate em with a passion, it was THEM who chanted during the Ted Bates silence, it was THEM who threw bricks at fans at fratton park, it is THEM who have the record for the youngest fan to receive a banning order.... they're fans are sick twisted scum, they are a hooligan club and all that is wrong with english football. THEY insult every other club in england, teams like burnley and blackburn, who live within theyre means, and get NOTHING, and yet the skates are allowed to spend millions to buy a squad they cant afford (cheating in every match they play effectively), and yet they're allowed to play at WEMBLEY!! theyre a disgrace, no administration points is an INSULT to leeds, an INSULT to chester, southend, crystal palace, and Luton.... DISGRACEFUL! make the fu(kers miserable! make the bast@rds pray at the altar!!! disgraceful! absolute ****, honest clubs going to the wall because of these CROOKS. Sympathy? **** SYMPATHY!

Saints fan here with a slightly different view to some of those above. I have absolutely no sympathy for the fans, the players and certainly not Avram Grant.

However, I do have massive sympathy for those who have lost their jobs, like I do anywhere in the UK when they lose their jobs. At the end of the day they are suffering and so will their families now.

All these players and grant make me sick. They keep saying what a great club it is and yet they do this? yes the players are protected by the PFA but that doesn't mean they can't give their money to those who have lost their jobs, or even back into the club. It is all voluntary!!

Peter Storrie should be ashamed. I don't think I would have the cheek to continue in my role, especially not on those wages. Has he not got enough money yet? No Chief Exec should have more money than the actual business especially when they are largely at fault!!!!

Thats a fair point. Although I don't think would have been given millions when they won the FA Cup like the players and 'others' did (hurt to even write anything about their success, although suppose it has crippled them so every cloud?)

Administrator is a joker as well. How can he make all these guarantees like he can guarantee they'll start next season. To start, you must be able to show you can finish. Just wind them up and be done with it. Also, kick them out the FA Cup because the players who made any difference on Saturday shouldn't even be at the club!

Thats a joke about Chester, didn't they owe less than £30k? So unfair on them when the skates owe over £7 million. One club I don't have sympathy for is Stockport because I cannot see how it was fair to take points off them last season once they were safe.

i'll reserve my sympathy for Southend until we see what happens on the last day!!

Doesn't all of this remind you of how incredibly lucky we were to get such a great owner and chairman to save us???

I have no sympathy for Portsmouth. It was always evident that their club was not going to be able to sustain their spending on players and the huge wages they were paying to the likes of Sol Campbell etc.The bubble bursting was just a matter of time.
What their example reinforces is the regularly well made point that footballers are just paid too much money and this is crippling clubs at many levels. I know they have a short career and I don't begrudge them a healthy,if not wealthy wage, but it cannot be logical or appropriate to pay somebody £100k a week, and that's just their basic salary before commercial endorsements etc.
The sooner they set a wage ceiling the better.Even £10k a week is half a million pounds a year. That should be enough for anybody.

I do feel sorry for the day to day staff who work hard for a living unlike the footy pro's and higher level managers. The situation is that desperate compared to what ours was. At least Mark Fry came out with the odd comment and gave serious deadlines for serious buyers. I understand there must be cuts and the latest news just shows that the owner don't want to lose too much money on a faltering business. Chester had their results expunged this week so why are other struggling Premier league teams watching and waiting while a non functional club is allowed to continue to opperate.

agreed, Chester owed 26k, Southend and Bournemouth owe around 300k each, and they're set to be wound up in the next 2 weeks, and yet Portsmouth have 11 millions worth, and survive..... i agree that it is disgusting.
.
And FA cup money is beside the point, they dont deserve the success they have had and still have (they still play matches), if a club spends beyond its means, they should be punished severely as a message of intent.
.
Also, id recommend reading some of the thread links i made, they talked about being the second richest club in england, slagging off our owner, even some of our own were calling it 'typical' and saying we got a bad deal. How wrong were those pessimists eh?

Its a very sad fact that the fallout from this basket-case of a club means people lose their jobs that can least afford it, this can not be said about the over-paid, under-achieving players!
Looks like PFC is now in its death-throes, in a way I'll be glad when its all over and no doubt the Premier League will feel the same. From what I've heard the rest are getting tired of PFC whinging that they are a so-called "special case", no such thing exists I'm afraid. You break the rules so you pay the price, could be a wake-up call for the rest of them!
Again, I don't wish hardship on the former/existing emplyees, they have morgages and families to feed like the rest of us. What leaves a nasty taste is that those who were really responcible will walk away with no doubt a few back-handers, and the players will continue to get over-inflated wages elswhere!
Kinda makes you think where will this madness end?............ :o(

When you lot are done ****, think on this:-
The present path was initiated 6 years ago, when a certain London based jockey went off the rails. Since then, the movement of funds has been cleverly and slowly gathering momentum, in a northerly direction. When Fred Marsh QC was asked to comment on the impending scenario in 2008, his reply had more inevitability than Nostradamus - "when the sun sets over the cliff, all that may be left of the badger's lair is the crust that once had vegetable oil. We must learn from the issues, and I can only insist that these issues are not financial"
Tell me again that this was not part of a plan by Eddie and Mark to see the decade through without jurisprudence.

When Eddie and Mark were moving 2nd issue shares all around eastern Europe, the legal advisers tried to pull a rag.
5 years later, the dog at the centre of the circus suddenly blended into the background.

Are you sure it was the horse. I feel you are looking at this in to simplistic view.
If Mark and Eddie, or even Sam and Dave waited for the 3rd issue then surely this whole mire would have been avoided.

Think hard.
6 years ago, the problems when old jockey - house near Waterlooville - caused the shares furor with TEAM in London. 2 years later, Fred Marsh, a totally neutral QC got wheeled out to give us half a story. And all the time it was the 2 jokers behind the scenes (we only run a hotel), knew this was coming.

Ring any bells now?

Evening all! Another sad day for the club, really feel for those that have lost their jobs today. And a disgrace that Storrie is still there, particularly on the sort of wages he's still going to be on. So the administrator is running club - what role for Storrie then? His contacts? Well that's how we got in this mess! Optimism rules, you really sound like quite a sad individual, one that seems pretty obsessed with all things blue! Get over it! Yeah some of our idiots gave you stick when you had your troubles, but not all! Sling it back all you like, but you're as low as them as far as I'm concerned! PUP!
Hey Bunman as you seem so concerned about the loss of jobs, what are your thoughts on Pompey keeping the loan players?
In my opinion the PL should not even consider offering any assistance to PFC until they start reducing their wage bill (and I don't mean sacking the tea lady etc), by returning all loan players to their parent clubs.
I look at the News sight from time to time and your fellow supporters seem to think it is ok to keep the loan players and don't seem able to understand why PFC's behaviour sticks in the throats of so many people.
Are you the one who might understand?

Ross Foods....five, Bird's Eye....six, Youngs....seven, Pompey will be minced up and turned into "Fish food"!!!. However, I'll doubt it's these brands will be interested as the fish in Fratton is smelly and not of a high quality.
And don't forget before the Saints game Storrie said he'd had a phone call the night before and an e-mail that morning.
Didn't Mark Fry say we had about 30 enquiries, which eventually whittled down to just 1 serious contender?
So PFC having just 12 enquiries must make them 3 times less popular than Saints, which is shown in crowd size I guess.

Portsmouth laid off 85 ordinary people who have mortages to pay etc.
One worker said that it took a player just 3 days to earn the same money that one of the redundant workers earned in a year.
In fact, on that basis, if you had laid off one of the players or even returned one of those back to the club he has been loaned from it would probably equate to the wages saved by making 85 people redundant.

Chester City went under with debts of £26,000. Probably less than one weeks wages for a Portsmouth player.

Portsmouth reputedly owe £70 million pounds. Chester owed £26,000 guess who went under?

Real Madrid players were on a win bonus of apparently £250,000 to win tonight. Thats 5 minutes on the pitch for a Real Madrid player equal to the debts of Chester City FC.

Southampton FC have sold 44,000 tickets for the JPT Final and Wembley and could apparently sell at least another 10,000 tickets but as Carlisle are only taking 22,000 fans and have returned some tickets the FA consider that 20,000 plus tickets will remain unsold so as to aid segregation of fans. So the National Stadium who are desperate to increase revenue to pay for the stadium are allowing 20,000 tickets to remain unsold.

Eduardo and Ramsey break their legs and fall to the pitch in agony, dreadful tragedy - then an hour or so later we witness Drogba acting as if every tackle breaks his leg, how can he not see the damage this is doing to the game.

You can get booked or sent off for removing your shirt in a goal celebration yet over the top tackles from Gallas, Pienaar etc are seen criticised then ignored!

PLEASE TELL ME IT AINT SO - WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THE FOOTBALL GAME I ONCE KNEW.

make that 13 interested bidders, me with my consortium worth £2.59 are set to launch a major bid for the club, we will bring european football back to Portsmouth and inject £10 into the first team to sign a ton of half rate Lithuanians, we also see Jan Portvliet as the manager that can bring this success to Portsmouth, we can rely on the youth team as well, this has never been tried before!

I agree entirely, we had to sell some of our top players. Just because they are in the prem lge they are getting away with robbery. Look at how all the other clubs in Admin are coping. Their debt must be increasing every day by a considerable amount. Hope HMRC get their way as this club are insolvent and should not be trading.

Casting my mind back to our own administration period, I remember constant f5 moments, people stepping in to pay the players wages and staff being laid off but I don't remember the same uproar as around Pompey's troubles. Were the press uninterested? Were HMRC involved? Or (whisper it quietly) did Lowe pay most bills and acted responsibly (i.e. not illegally) when he realised we couldn't and went straight into admininstration

Next Monday Pompey are back in the high court to prove the Administrator Andrew Andronikou is totally independant of the owner Chanrai. Assuming this is found not to be the case and he's thrown out of pompey administator's job, then what happens to all the people who lost their jobs. If he's in place illegally then surely any decisions he makes cannot be considered to be valid.
