Alan Pardew says Southampton FC players looked tired

ALAN Pardew has refused to write off Saints’ play-off chances – despite their 1-0 defeat to Swindon last night.

Saints’ hopes of reaching the top six took a massive dent as they lost their first league game at St Mary’s since November, with former Poole Town striker Charlie Austin bagging the only goal.

It was always a big ask for Saints to make the play-off spots, and is now massively unlikely.

But Pardew insisted there will be more days like Saturday’s win over Leeds for Saints fans to savour in the future.

He said: “Mathematically it’s still possible, so we just try and win the next game.

“We’ve had a really, really tough season in trying to build this team and get it together.

“It was a disappointing night after a great day on Saturday and there will be many more of those to come.”

After seeing his side stay 16 points off the top six – but now without their game in hand – he added: “There was a bit of fatigue in there.

“But there was also significant pressure to get the win and we were rash at times with our deliveries from the back.

“We’ve got some good players here and we know we’ve got a good team.

“We’ve got to make sure we finish well and try and win every game until the end of the season.”

Saints, who were looking to equal a 33-year-old record by claiming an eighth successive home league victory did have a few chances, but just could quite capitalise on them in the first half.

In the second period Danny Wilson’s side – awho came into the match in sixth place – took control of the game and were able to see out time after Austin had netted.

“Swindon had a good game plan to try and stop us and restrict us,” said Pardew.

“They defended deep and defended in numbers and you need a break when you get that and we didn’t really get one.

“We had a couple of close shaves first half, we had one just over the bar, one’s just hit the keeper rather than him save it but I was comfortable with how we were at that time.

“The game changed at the start of the second when we started a little bit sloppy, they had a good spell and we gifted them a goal really.

“From that moment on we got a bit anxious, our crossing was disappointing and we lacked a bit of quality at that time.

“That was unusual for us, so a really frustrating evening.

“Swindon came to do that and they got away with it in some ways but they also did a professional job as well, so the two combined got them the win.”

Pardew continued: “Your full backs need to be imaginative in those situations.

“At times we fell down in areas but we still had big chances.

“You can go at any level of football and get frustrated with teams that do that and you need a break and a bit of quality and unfortunately for us we didn’t get either.

“We looked a little bit jaded if I’m honest second half – the efforts of the Leeds game perhaps took their toll.

“But we would still have liked to have had a bit more quality on the pitch.

“It was a tough day for our fans because we got ourselves into a good position and now we’ve got to lift ourselves because that’s a blow to us as a group.”

I think the play offs are over and Pards knows this, he should concentrate now on the JPT and getting as close to the top 6 as possible, also if we could above Bristol Rovers that would be brillient as i have a €200 bet with the guy in the next office, we would finish above them and that is from the start of the season. COYR get me that €200 lol

A big disappointment last night, but the season has to go down as a big success. A year ago we were down and out. The past decade has seen us sell our best players, never allowing for a settled squad that could compete. It's a shame AP came in so late, and it's unfair to be critical of him for those early struggles (strange formations and substitution patterns aside) during the first 1/3rd of the season as he was literally picking up the pieces. The team had no self belief, were on minus 10 points and were days from shutting down altogether - thank you Rupert!
We now have a squad that should win the division next year, we have enjoyed good cup runs and for once can look forward with excitement instaed of dread.
We're not done yet - if we win each game we could grab that final playoff place. Unlikely, but something to play for. I'll wait to judge AP until next season, but I like what I've seen so far.
I can't wait for next season. It's been a long time since I could say that.

Good Morning,
I would like to take this opportunity to look forward to next season (assuming that we do not miraculously make the Play Offs this year) and realistically assess our prospects.
Firstly, whilst I do not anticipate major changes, what thoughts on new signings or departures during the summer? Personally, I think AP now has decided on his First Choice Team (which only includes 3 players not signed by him) and also on his bench. Our starting 11 over the last few games plus Waigo, Antonio and Connolly would look fairly certain to me retained if possible. In addition, Bartowski, James and Thomas should be safe along with a few of the youngsters. All others, I believe, could be looking for new employment with Murty (too many injuries), Perry (too many preferred) and Wotton (age) all included.
Secondly, a quick assumption on what will happen on the pitch. Lambert and Barnard regularly return over 20 goals each and I see no reason why between them we should not expect 45 to 50 goals next year. Puncheon, Lallana and Hammond look good to add another 15 to 20 between them. The weaakness in the "Engine Room" is Schneiderlin who for all his talent still does not produce the goal end product. We do not get many from our defence but current performances suggest that Harding, Jaidi, Fonte and Otsemibor should produce 5 to 10 over a full season together. Lastly, there are the substitutes and I believe that Waigo, Antonio and Connnolly are more than good for 15 to 20 goals. My thoughts then are for an end product of between 80 and 100 goals in a full season. allowing for say 10% to 15% of games where for whatever reason we do fail to hit the net, this would average 2 goals per game!
Defensively, we have looked much more solid in recent games and I would like to see that trend get even better as players gel together over a much longer period.
Overall then I would envisage many more wins next year instead of the draws that have blighted this season.
Finally, my own prediction, if we do have money to spend, would be on 2 new signings - 1 centre midfield and 1 goalkeeper! OK don't all shout at me at once, I have utmost respect for Kelvin both as a player and as a man who stood by us throughout the darkest days. However, he is a superb shot stopper but still does not command the area and organise the players in front of him. I remember when Peter Shilton came to Saints at a very advanced stage of his career. I was absolutely amazed at his contribution in every game, not just as a keeper but also in vocally organising the defence. He must have ended every game with a sore throat but by God, the men in front of him benefitted from his presence!
I look forward to your thoughts, comments and no doubt some abuse. Whatever happens, the superb ride we are enjoying in supporting our club will continue, onwards and upwards. See you at Wembley!

Swindon Town - what a laugh!! What a crappy hole, one which you should crawl back into!! You stifled a good footballing team so credit should go to you for that but no wonder you can only manage average 6,000 gates. Who would want to watch that sort of football?

Pards agreed that if he was given 3 million pounds to spend on players the playoffs would be achievable. Truth is the team has fallen far short against teams like Swindon. So the boys were tired. Swindon didn't look tired, stop spouting this rubbish, get your head down and MOTIVATE the team like Danny Wilson did last night

I'm a Swindon Fan and I think this is a very naive and bitter comment. Swindon have played some fantastic football this year but we have got a massive injury crisis at the moment and like most good managers, ours adapted his tactics accordingly. Last night, not great football by town, but walking away with 3 points against the in-form team in the league away from home with 7 first team players injured........... I'll watch that all day long thank you. If you saw Swindon play throughout the year you would realise that we always try and play good football but if you do not have the resources it is hard. Unfortunately we do not have the same amount of players as you guys.

I think Saints have done really well this year considering the 10 pts being taken off, and you must surely be in the top 2 next year.

Good luck for next year, from a supporter of a club that has been surrounded by financial ruin and is finally now secure and building back up.

If AP is complaining of tiredness why doesn't he rest some players?! He brought in Barnard so he could rest Ricky but he hasn't yet. He brought in Puncheon a great player but we also had Antonio and Waigo doing well there. AP does the training and has the results of how much time each player has spent on the pitch etc...this is an excuse if the team lose.

Swindon's game plan worked...but it wasn't a surprise...every man and his dog knew what they were going to come and do...even AP himself said it...why the team aren't prepared better in these instances.

It seems AP has brought in the players he wanted and now is settled into playing them every week whatever the scenario! I think tinkering too much can hinder but dropping players can also spur them on better! No is the time to drop players who didn't perform!

Swindon were the best team we have played this season, even though they rode their luck - post, bar, two goal line scrambles, but they outplayed us in midfield, where we were ineffective and had to resort to long ball passing. That didn't work either with James having a terrible game - not his fault - he's just not up to speed yet in what was a very fast-paced game. I'm not saying we're out of the playoffs completely, but it doesn't look good now. As soon as we are definitely out of the running, we should mix the team up a bit and try some different combinations - things like stifling a game, or playing defensively with one up for difficult away games. The reason for this is because we are going to be the team to beat next year (look at Leeds' second year in League 1) and it's not going to be such an easy season as some may think. We're going to have to learn to play these different ways in order to go up, and piling everyone forward ain't gonna work in every game, as last night proved. We'll get found out, and we need options. So now is the time for experimentation so we are ready in all departments next season.

Agree with everything you said except the bit about Schneiderlin.
Firstly he is a defensive midfielder,so should not be expected to score goals. And secondly he holds the midfield together to allow Hammond to get into goal scoring positions from midfield.
He is the engine room in midfield, tackling back and winning the ball to allow the others to play.
See you at Wembley

I would imagine any team could stifle us if they keep 9 players between the half way line and their penalty box, and Swindon did that well, had we scored it would have been a whole new ball game, just to say well done Robins, it was a game where we probably wouldn't have scored if we played all night.

I do hope Swindon go up next year not just for the fact that they beat us twice but I'd rather play against sides with a higher entertainment factor. It gets results though...but then so do the other sides in the playoffs with a much better goal difference.

I don't mind not going up this year as Saints have a very young side and should not only finish in the top 2 next year but will score lots of goals in the process...I can't wait for the season to start! This year started too slow but it has taken 2 transfer windows to build the squad we have now!

A clear out in the summer will free up the space for some more strengthening with some experience to the squad. I hope we win the JPT now and go up next year as champions! We will then make a better fist at the championship.

I though Swindon deserved the win yesterday as they were quicker to the ball and showed a real desire to win. That said I can't see them going up this year.

Apart from the result I thought it was good game last night. I was surprised by how well Swindon played. I predicted their full backs would have "twisted blood" by the end of the night. More fortune for us and it's a different game but thought they gave us a bit of a lesson until their goal. We struggled to break them down and did indeed get anxious and lacked quality, certainly on delivery. Leeds hangover? Complacency? Even Jose made a mistake or two! Early rising this morning watching the sun come up of the Kaimai (mountain) Range sopping a mug of tea - autumn here and our first morning of single digit Deg C. 9c.. heading for 22c later though.

What the heck's that got to do with anything? Autumn... of the season!

I've enjoyed this season immensely and will continue to until the aftermath of the final game and the off season wrangling and preparations start over.

Why would a fan say give up it's over when it's not? A slim chance is better than none. Is this why UK do so poorly at the Olympics etc. Too many get up and leave 10 mins before the final whistle.... surely ppl aren't going to do that to this wonderful rebuilding season.

It's one thing to know a task is nigh on impossible but another to stop chasing. Even if the task is genuinely impossible a sports person should have a mentality that they will chase it until the competition is over, then they pick up and rest and start training for the next challenge.

We have a fantastically fit squad of quality players well capable of playing two games per week. If you asked any of them are they up for it or would they like one of the other to step in.. you'd be told to "sod off - they're playing - end of" !!

If he didn't play his best players and we lost by 2 or 3 the boo brigade and Nicola would have roasted him.

I love, (we all love) to second guess and debate the game and calls.. but who among us would want to be in Pards Position carrying the burden of expectation. (put you hand down silly!)

One thing I'll add to that is that Pards has excellent heads around him to draw advice from. This club is a group of great people. We should have faith that remember it cuts both ways; as soon as he loses the faith of the group that is the time Nicola will step in. We need not doubt that.

Finally thank you to the Swindon fans popping in. We need geeing up now and then. Full credit to you and good luck with nicking auto from Leeds. I'd love nothing more for them to lose in the play-offs so we may have a chance of inflicting some misery on them next season...

Relax and have a lovely evening in the autumn of the season.

Have a great evening.

At least one or two did come back on today to admit their defeat and that took some doing so fair play to them. All this name calling though is rather petty and shows you up for what you are ****?

I bet it was front page news in the Swindon Village Chronicle, ... the town cryers were out, bunting on the streets, and open topped tractor was carrying the team around the village square.
The Mayor of Swindon has declared from this day forth , a public holiday on the 16th March.

Well done to Swindon last night - sometimes you just have to credit the other team. We were well on top all of the first half but couldn’t get that goal. If you don’t score when you are on top you usually don’t win.

What a turn round from half time – they played us of the park with good ball to feet, on the ground football using the width of the park. Couldn’t believe what I was seeing. We even reverted to long balls – and aimless inaccurate ones at that. Thomas in particular (after a good couple of games) and Jaidi – typical of centre halfs, can’t pass the ball but think they can. Just do the simple 10 yard passes to midfield.

We also got very narrow, which played into their hands – always a danger with Lallana and Puncheon playing on the “wrong” wing and cutting in onto their strong foot. Pardew was right to bring on James to give us some width and for his crossing ability. Only problem was he was awful! Rusty, I guess.

I do agree that some of them looked tired, Puncheon especially but also Lallana and to an extent Lambert. Of course, Pardew would have been damned if he changed a winning team as he is now by some for not doing it. Always easy to be wise after the event, but you do need to mix it a bit for Tuesday games after a hard Saturday. Connolly looked good when he came on but Pardew probably couldn’t risk him from the start.

In truth, the defence didn’t do much wrong until they became exposed as we pressed forward for the equaliser. Kelvin had a bit of a nightmare, however – reminded me of that awful spell he had a couple of years back before he got injured and then Richard Wright came in.

I think the chances of the play offs were always slim and now he’s out of town. This was a six pointer – shame.

Having been to Swindon a few times, including the 1-0 defeat early in the season, I can understand why they are so excited by yesterdays win.
I stayed at Swindon’s top hotel, the world famous 5 star Travelodge, which if you squint your eyes from the top floor you can just make out the aging timbers of the wood wormed infested County Ground.
It’s a lovely village, made famous as the place you bypass to get to the classy city of Bath.
It was an exciting day out for all of their supporters, I followed the park and ride bus in from Tesco’s down over the Itchen Bridge, and it was a joy to watch their little faces as they experienced a bus for the first time.
Congratulations to their team as well, who deployed the 8-1-1 formation brilliantly.

The excuses are very poor from Pardew and the Saints players. As some Swindon fans have already stated we had a game plan due to our massive injuries and Danny Wilson i believe is a better tactically aware manger then Pardew. DW knew your weaknesses which was lack of pace at the back and he exploitied it by counter attacking down the flanks. Pardew didnt change his tactics throughout the game and i believe he flatters to deceive. I know you guys are happy with Pardew but personally i dont think your going any where with him and i would be surprised if he's not replaced in the summer or wont last the whole of next season.
You probably saw the best away performance by an away team this season at St Marys. The comment by Fonte that Austin didn't do anything during the game is strange as Austin had three chances and scored one so where he got that from is beyond me.
Pardew cant use the tired excuse with the biggest squad in the league he's hiding but i think now he is being found out not only from Tuesday night but also from some of your away defeats.
You keep believing but i will be back on here at some stage next season to say i was right about Pardew not being here.

apart from sned hes the only other defensive midfielder hes not a full back though .maybe a sweeper would suit him .but unlees we buy another holding player we need him if fit as not last night .he needs reserve games .but if sneds out most time we lose .he looked tired in the 2nd half tues night .but if i was pardew i would look for a decent holding player ,the rest is there that would bringt the consistancy we all crave away from home .
