Premier League fine Portsmouth FC £1m

More stories about: Pompey, Premier League

PORTSMOUTH Football Club have been fined £1m for breaking league rules.

The Premier League today confirmed they had hit problem-club Pompey with the punishment.

According to a spokesman for the Premier League, the fine is for 'a number of breaches of rules and regulations'.

There were no specifics were given in the statement, but it is thought the punishment is for paying players and staff late, as well as delays in paying transfer fees.

The Premier League will take the money from the next instalment of television money due to Portsmouth.

This means they will not have to worry about being creditors of the club - they will simply take it out of the £6m the club would get, before giving it to the Fratton Park side.

Oh come on Premier League - let us know what they've been up to this time. A £1 million fine suggests it was very serious.

What a shame (not)!!!!! Send them to the conference south where they belong, a disgrace to professional football

Well that's hardly going to help them, is it? If it wasn't Pompey I'd get on my high horse about how savage it is to hit struggling clubs with fines and points deductions but, erm, it is Pompey so that's fine.

Btw I think that by this stage in our administration we were full of fanciful ideas about mystery celebrity backers coming in for us (the drummer from Coldplay being my favourite). Who are Pompey linking themselves with?

I like how their supporters are now saying they can't wait to leave the premiership and all their fines and points deductions.....just wait until the League get their hands on you!!! :D

The PL are out of order, after all it was their fault that PFC have had dodgy owners, it's their fault that PFC will be relegated this season, it was their fault that PFC were deducted 9 points they probably told Avram that it was fine to visit brothels.

Evening all! Another bad day, but we're getting used to it! And you lot have all been banging on about the special treatment we've been getting! Exactly what special treatment we've had from the PL I'm not too sure, and this proves it!

evening bunman, cheers for the donation (nice gesture).......i think the PL are turning the screw now as an example to others, although i feel its unfair on other creditors as they are nicking the money up front to pay other clubs before it can be divided properly.....do you agree ?

Pleasure, sorry it wasn't more! Got to agree with you, the whole football creditors taking preference doesn't sit well at all with me at all. They're taking £1m out of our TV money before it reaches us - I'm sure there are more deserving cases of local businesses etc than Chelsea and Arsenal etc! AS you say they're flexing their muscles to show other clubs - shame that those who didn't pay the wages etc are long gone so why punish us now when we're on our knees. All the rumours about us sticking weak teams out was basically creative journalism! In all honesty part of me hopes we do now so we can screw up their precious competition!

Bunman, is it true that if it is proven that your club has been the victim of a fraud or criminal activity, then the 9 points can be reinstated?

No idea about the points if there is a fraud - common sense would say it would be looked at but this whole mess has never been looked at with that! As for the culprits, it's crazy. I get the whole point deduction idea but is has always struck me as a way to punish anybody, whether or not it is the right people

Don't worry Skates when you are in the Football League next season they know clubs have no money so it will be penalty points.
.
No CVA (HMRC will block) = -15 points
2nd Admin in recent seasons = -2 further points.
.
Storrieteller court case in May 2011 should be followed by more Penalty points before the 2011/12 season.
.
For info Luton got -10 for "... run with a flagrant disregard for the Regulations laid down to protect the game. At the heart of the allegations .... was the routing of payments to agents NOT through The Football Association as ought to have occurred but through an associated company, namely Jayten Stadium Limited...."
.
Which sounds about the same as paying via a Monaco bank account, therefore -10 points.

I would consider still having 6 loan players on your books as being special treatment.
You cannot pay your creditors, yet the PL sit on their hands and somehow think it is ok for you to keep these players, despite their presence increasing your already over inflated wage bill.
Personally I don't think any footballing body, be it the PL, The Football League or even the Wessex League should offer or give any help to PFC, until PFC starts taking action that reduces its outgoings, namely by returning the loan players to their home clubs.
At least that way your club may regain a modicum of dignity.

I also think point deductions for clubs is wrong.
As you say it's the wrong people that get punished, but if the rules are to change then suitable alternatives need to be in place to stop clubs building up massive debts and then going bust to eliminate the debt.
IMO club owners should be forced to lodge a certain amount of money in a holding account, perhaps different amounts increasing in size depending on what league they are in.
This would at least go some way to clearing debts should the club go t1ts up.
Similarly, I think it is time clubs were forced to CLEAR all debt by the end of August, each year. Failure to do so would see them relegated to the league below, with their place taken by the next team in line (eg the losing finalist of the play off or the team that actually finished 3rd).
Might encourage a few more teams to live within their means.

It gets better and better!

On a different note when will people realise that it's the players and their huge wages that are causing the problem. They are paid more than the game can afford despite its massive income so owners are having to inject their own cash or fiddle
