SAINTS fans are today toasting the first anniversary of saviour Markus Liebherr’s takeover.
It was on July 8, 2009, that the previously unknown Swiss-based businessman completed his deal to spare the club from possible extinction.
The club had been in severe danger of not being able to celebrate its 125th anniversary in 2010/11.
“We will always be eternally grateful to Markus Liebherr from saving the club,”
said Mike O’Callaghan, chairman of the Southampton Independent Supporters Club.
“Without him, I don’t think there would be a SFC any more.
Saints fanzine editor Darren Wheeler added: Markus Liebherr coming in was a left field one – I don’t think any of us would ever have dreamt a billionnaire would be interested in a club like ours.
“Everything the club has done since has been slick and professional.”
