Saints sweat on injuries

SAINTS have injury concerns over three key players ahead of the start of the season, after they sat out this afternoon's friendly defeat to Reading.

Rickie Lambert, Jason Puncheon and Morgan Schneiderlin all missed out with minor knocks.

The trio are described as "touch and go" by manager Alan Pardew to make Saturday's League One opener against Plymouth.

Adam Lallana, who is yet to play in pre-season, will definitely not make next Saturday's starting eleven, Pardew confirmed.

“We’re hoping that maybe Puncheon, Morgan and Lambert will be available for next weekend, but it’s touch and go on all three,” he said.

“Lallana will definitely not start, he’s not done enough work.”

Typical. I was looking forward to starting the season on the same points as everyone and with a fully fit squad. No Richardson, No Lallana, No Waigo or Antonio. And possibly no goal machine or Schneiderlin. b****x

Its obviously a virus that makes them vulnerable to other injuries! Or a smoke screen to make Plymouth relax!!!

desperately need Morgan or Punch Chamberlaine just not good enough, Wotton has no class just left Dean & Ryan to do all the work. Front 2 look able to cover for Richie & Adam & defence look sound enough. COYR

If I remember correctly AP studied under Sir Alex Ferguson before joining Saints. I reckon IanRRR you are spot on, It's the sort of mind games that he plays, also I believe that Peter Reid was watching this match, he could not have much to go on from what he saw this afternoon so yes a smoke screen to be sure!!!

Latest Rumour: Southampton boss Alan Pardew wants to do a deal with Arsenal to take 18-year-old midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong on loan.

Hi Invid, how's your summer been. Tend to agree, A.P loves the mind games.
Although Carter didn't play, somehow think he will be joining us, as well as Antonio.
What do you think

Hope your right Antonio would be a good capture at the right price I'm also sure Lambert Puncheon and Spiderman will play next week
With the players he's bought we seem to have more mid field options even though we thought they were out and out defenders

Hiya Gossie
Had a great summer, yeah I agree with you about both Carter and Antonio, I believe AP has his team ready to rumble and just looking for back up players, not necessarily to go automatically in the first team, last season they finished the best team in the division so why break up a winning combination, just strengthen the squad if injuries occur or whatever

I dunno why we didnt release Wotton or Pulis?!

They dont do anything and are really just getting paid to play in the reserves!

Pardew please get at least 2 quality players, and 1 back up player!

A quality winger.
A quality box-to-box centre mid.
A back striker for Rickie.

I'd loved to see a signing today to just keep the faith for next Saturday.

I thoroughly recommend fans sign up to the player and watch the full video interview with Pards..

He sees Plymouth as the significant opponent.

No way will be be drawn on transfers.. obviously that would stuff any negotiations. I should imaging he would have a few fish on lines and will be reeling in the best fish.

Very keen on Dickson's ability as a utility acknowledging his delivery and his work on the left with Dan Harding. Also gave good praise to Butterfield singling him out as a class above.

The manager does say Adam hasn't got his knee right and hasn't done enough work to be able to start but didn't seem overly worried about the others.

The piece ends with a huge cheeky grin as he says "They all want to play in the first game of the season and you'll be amazed what a miraculous recovery some of em can have when they want to."

The Management team must be under pressure and busy at the moment.. but look to have an air of quiet professionalism

Perhaps fans could learn from that as we adopt a cool calm collected approach ..lol at least for the first few games.

I am full of optimism for this season. The match yesterday was OK as a friendly goes and yes, we were much better than Reading until end of 1st half when all of the changes were made.
.
In the matchday programme notes, Pards said he was still looking for 2 - 3 players to strengthen the squad. Daniel Frimpong , a 18 year old mid-fielder at Arsenal, has been linked with Saints. I watched him playing in the Arsenal vs Inter match on Sky last night and he looks a very handy player who, if we did get him, would be great cover for Deano and who would be competition for the postition - That's what Pards is after - backup and competition for the various positions. He may well play in the Arsenal vs Celtic match at 1600 today, Sunday - worth a watch!
.
Looking forward to the match next Saturday!

Yeahhhh....pompey 1st round - swindon 2nd round and reading 3rd! Beautiful.

What do u think about the mind games AP is playing?? Personally, I think it's exactly why NC wants to keep him! Man united, Arsenal and liverpool are all successful teams that use them. NC is quietly building this club to be a force to reckon with!

Yesterdays game reminded me just how insular about our own team many of us are. When Church suddenly turned up with 2 goals I decided to read up about him on the Reading site as I had never heard of him. I was amazed to discover that aged 21 he is already a full Welsh International; was at the club as a 15year old and had a good season last year. I'm saying that in all the transfer talk we engage in why has not this nearly local lad ever been mentioned.? His sister sings well too.
As for managers mind games don't they all try it on? Some are just more devious than others!!

Just watching this Frimpong lad playing for Arsenal against Celtic.

If the rumour is true and we get him, it would be great, a very gifted player, strong in the tackle and passes really well, would like to him in the Saints squad for the season

As others have said, the countdown has started, this is going to be the defining season for Saints. Year 2 of the 5 year plan, for the 5 year plan to work, and achieve its final goal of Saints in the Premiership, then we must get out of league one this season. Not easy, its a hard league, ageing players getting a last pay day, enthusiastic youngsters, then there are those awful away pitches, like Wycombes ploughed field.
If we don't make it this season, then A.P will have gone, and Markus, well we hope not, but this is as i said our defining season, probably the most important season in the history of our club.
This is our time to sing and chant and sing again, so please, can we hear the whole ground this season and not only the Northam. Those of you in the Chapel with me, come on, lets show the rest who can sing the loudest, remember, there are more of us in the Chapel than there is in the Northam.

Getting back to the subject of the thread, we are told that the OS is the only source of genuine information, sadly it is lacking in that department, the Injuries section is completely blank, yet we hear that at least four of the best players are carrying injuries, bad enough to put them in doubt for the start of the season, if this is so the friendlies have proved that we have insufficient cover. If we are going to be told to ignor other sources then the OS has to be kept up to scratch, otherwise the media will continue to make things up, and some of their material can be very damaging. As Saints fans, we are thirsty for information, starving us will lead to discontent, especially if the results go bad. I am optimistic that we can do well this season, it is by no means guaranteed or am I worrying unnecessarily?
