New favourite Adkins coy on Saints link

SCUNTHORPE United boss Nigel Adkins has emerged as the new favourite to succeed Alan Pardew as Saints manager – and last night he refused to deny he was on his way to St Mary’s.

Adkins yesterday shot to the top of the book-makers’ list of candidates to become Saints' new manager following Pardew's sacking on Monday.

The 45 year-old was a guest on Sky Sports’ Football League show last night.

And when asked specifically if he was leaving Glanford Park for St Mary’s, Adkins replied intriguingly: “Shall we move on to the next question.”

Adkins admitted he was flattered to be linked with Saints and said it reflected well on everyone at Scunthorpe.

“If we are up there (in the betting) and getting the recognition that is down to a lot of hard work by a lot of people at our football club,” he said.

“I’m very pleased (to be the favourite) for everyone at our football club because we have been linked with a lot of clubs in the past and it’s just recognition for all the hard work that goes on at our club – the chairman, coaching staff and players.

“I think it’s great testament to all the hard work that’s going on at our football club.”

Adkins’ first managerial job was with Bangor City.

He was in charge of the League of Wales side between 1993 and 1996 and guided them to successive titles in 1994 and 1995.

He initially went to Scunthorpe as the club’s physio.

But following a brief but successful spell as caretaker manager following the departure of Brian Laws he was named as The Iron’s new permanent manager in December 2006.

And at Scunthorpe he has twice achieved the target Saints have been set this season - promotion from League One.

Scunthorpe won promotion to the second tier as champions in Adkins' first season in charge.

They were relegated back to the third tier the following campaign but bounced back immediately and performed above expectations to retain their Championship status last season.

He has NO experience. Nicola will appoint a proven manager.

I don't know him but twice from L1 with little budgets would be a start. I still like the idea of Brown who openly expressed keen.. point a guy like that in the right direction and he'd be into it like a bulldog... if the ground rules were clear the passion would be welcome.
I don't mind this tick list from the Echo.. it keeps the threads fresh.. lol

Just seen it now.The host kept teasing him about it! Very coy on the subject so possibly been asked in for an interview. Got a bit about him and a mate is a Scunny fan who is gutted he could be going. Does look like Alan Pardew with glasses though....

If we get him i'd be happy as well as Phil Brown or Eddie Howe.Obviously would love O'Neill but aint going to happen.

You live hundreds of miles from the club adkins currently manages, and you say he is not up to the job, how do you know?
Btw you post far too much on here lately and are becoming repetative (boring)

Adkins would be a good bet. Strange though how some managers work best with tight budgets and not big name players. A bit like sturrock here in Plymouth. If he can do it with scunny he should find it easy with us. I think it says a lot when a clubs fans don't want to lose them and that applies to Adkins and hull still rate brown very highly. That type of recommend is good enough for me.

If you can't support the club, it owners and staff through a difficult period then please go take your negative support elsewhere.

i think adkins would be a great choice for manager. he knows the league as he has been in it before with scunthorpe, and he also knows how to get out of this division, like he said on the football league weekend last night. he also didnt say no when he was asked if he was going to take the job last night, he saud somethong along the lines of lets wait and see.

to be honest, i would welcome anyone into the club, except paul hart. aslong as the new manager has the backing of the board, the backing of the fans, and more importantly the backing of the players so that there is confidence in the camp, we will fly out of this division. we have the best squad in the division by a mile, and if they are behind the manager, and playing with confidence and have good spirit, then there is no reason why we shouldnt win the league.

just watched Adkins' interview on The Iron Player after they stuffed George Burley's Crystal Palace (complete with Edgar Davids) 3-0 last week and he's good value, summed up his current Scunthorpe squad as "honest, hard-working, they play some good attractive football and score goals .... that's what we're all about".
Funny, he looks a bit like Alan Pardew (with glasses) but he sounds like Rickie Lambert.
He must be our man, then, HAHAHAHA.

Adkins could do a job. He knows what it takes to get promotion out of this league, also likes to get the ball down and play a bit.

This is about peoples opinions and not a dictatorship, if your opinions matters then so do all the others, if their's don't neither doe's your's, however if you are at the game I agree you should be 100% behind the team and support them through song and chant not just be a spectator.
