Dean Wilkins withdrew young Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain “to try something different” in the home humiliation against Rochdale.
Frustrated Saints fans booed their disapproval when the 17-year-old was substituted during the second half of his first league start.
Sections of supporters chanted ‘you don’t know what you’re doing’ at the caretaker boss.
It was a tough day all round with the supporters again chanting the name of departed manager Alan Pardew as they saw their team slump to an embarrassing home defeat to Rochdale.
