NIGEL Adkins is on the brink of being appointed Saints’ new manager, the Daily Echo understands.
Saints are understood to have approached Scunthorpe last night for permission to speak to the 45-year-old, which was granted.
And, while nothing has been formally confirmed as yet, the talks are thought to have moved on at pace since then.
The Daily Echo understands that Adkins, 45, has now moved into pole position for the job in the eyes of the club, as well as the bookies, who had this morning suspended betting on him after a raft of big money in the last few days.
Negotiations are thought to be underway this afternoon to complete all the necessary formalities, such as signing contracts and agreeing compensation with Championship side Scunthorpe.
While there is no indication exactly how long that will take - and a last minute hitch is not out of the question - it looks as if Adkins could be unveiled at St Mary’s very soon, as Saints prepare for Saturday’s trip to Swindon.

It was rumour of a Chinese whisper that was started by a local journo that managed to get from Radio Solent to R5L without passing through a single brain cell.

Who the f*** knows if any of those would be any good, as 7saint7 rightly says, if you can manage footballers, good footballing brain - ie, can optimise his squad, tactically outwitt their opponents, have the respect and belief of the team then why shouldnt NA be good?

Will you lot please get real! You're not going to attract a manager like O'Neil at this level. Concentrate on promotion and take it one step at a time because I think you guys are still favourites to go up this season. I'm a Hull City fan living on the south coast. Give Adkins a chance - he may do a good job for you. I, for one, will miss his upbeat and positive attitude when he's being interviewed on Radio Humberside, even if he does manage that lot on the south of the River! He's done a good job at Scunthorpe with very little money. I think he could do a lot more given the opportunity. Good luck for the rest of the season, and look forward to playing you lot next season in the Championship (assuming we don't get relegated again!). Enjoyed the day out at SMS.

Yes, personally I'd rather O'Neill, and probably a few others as well. But realistically NC can only choose from those who apply, and then NC will choose the one who he (and presumably expert advisors) believe will do the best job. They will be privy to information and expertise that we are not, so we must trust them to make the right choice - remember, NC will want promotion as much as we all do. Whatever choice is made, we will have to believe it's the best one available and get behind the team. Whoever it is there's a good chance of a slow start for them, but we need to remove the instability, so we'll have to keep behind them as long as NC does. I just hope they decide soon!

Saints need to act decisively. With the sacking of Alan Pardew - SFC may have missed out on a potential Player and then the Transfer window closed. The Loan Windows opens - and there is no move for any players. Delaying the appointment of a new Manager is not helping. The Club will not bring in any players as they seem to be waiting for the direction of the New Manager. The Club need another Striker. They need pace on the wings. Anyone on the "hopefuls" list has their plusses...(and a few minusses). Adkins is the big unknown to me, which may be a good thing. He has without doubt done wonders at Scunny and is hopefully fired up to take our Club to the next step. My gut feeling is that energy and ambition will prove better for us than a "seen it, done it" manager. Adkins or Brown will do for me. Whoever it is...they need to be onboard fast!

what is the square rout of a googlplex? i have no idea.... just like the echo or uncle john has no clue on all the rumours.we will know when cortese feels fit to unveil him.whoever he is i hope he gets us up coz i would rather have a tooth ach for a year than be in league 1 another season.

Adkins only spoken to over the phone this morning by Cortese, he has never set foot out of Scunthorpe all day... Once realised it wasn't going anywhere O'Neill was approached and checked in at De Vere tonight around 8pm... Watch this space... My mate has his autograph... COYR

I don't believe the press anymore until its been confirmed on the Official Saints site.
The quotes today from Phil Brown are well worth a read too..if you haven't read them.
NC and his team are doing wonders behind the scenes...we are so lucky...our clubs future is so exciting.
I wonder who'll be the Echo's favourite tomorrow?.....the longer this goes on the more un-creditable the Echo reports are...which is a little sad.

Adkins wouldn't have been my personal first choice, but the guy has a good record and I think he'd be a success.
Still, we'll see. There a rumours doing the rounds that Adkins has declined the job offer anyway.
