Nigel Adkins on brink of becoming Southampton FC manager

More stories about: Southampton FC

NIGEL Adkins is on the brink of being appointed Saints’ new manager, the Daily Echo understands.

Saints are understood to have approached Scunthorpe last night for permission to speak to the 45-year-old, which was granted.

And, while nothing has been formally confirmed as yet, the talks are thought to have moved on at pace since then.

For a video of the top stories in today's Daily Echo, click the front page.

The Daily Echo understands that Adkins, 45, has now moved into pole position for the job in the eyes of the club, as well as the bookies, who had this morning suspended betting on him after a raft of big money in the last few days.

Negotiations are thought to be underway this afternoon to complete all the necessary formalities, such as signing contracts and agreeing compensation with Championship side Scunthorpe.

While there is no indication exactly how long that will take - and a last minute hitch is not out of the question - it looks as if Adkins could be unveiled at St Mary’s very soon, as Saints prepare for Saturday’s trip to Swindon.

sounds like a good decision to me, we don't need the razzle dazzle and wow factor, i'd prefer a good manager who will keep his head down, earn respect from the players for his football brain and get the results, than someone who will be constantly in the press for his witty comments or his lifestyle.

People have been so deluded. We are a League 1 team, yes we have ambition and should fulfill it, but we didn't last year, so we won't get the likes of O'Neil etc. Adkin would be a great choice in my opinion, look what he's done at Scunny with no budget! Let's just hope he's good at using a budget :-)

Let's get behind him then. I believe he can do a great job but needs the backing of everyone associated with the club. Good work NC - conducted yourself very well in this process that was clearly unplanned, yet neccessary, if the rumours are to be believed. All you negative posters go somewhere else lets have a bit of optimism. Nigel Atkins Red and White Army!! Marching to the Championship this year!!!

If it's Adkins coming in, we need to get the whole supporter base behind him! Let's give him every chance of doing well as Saints fans.

With our support (which when united can propel the club forward) and the squad we have at our disposal, Adkins + Saints can do well this year. We're only two wins off top with a game in-hand. If we don't get the result we want against Swindon this Saturday lets put criticism on hold as I'm sure that when the new man has had enough time with the squad that he can make a positive difference.

Martin O'Neill isn't coming (wish he was), however, why do we need someone with PL experience. Last time i looked we were a 3rd division club. Surely better to get someone with experience of getting out of this league.

Thank you Tuna_Man...that is exactly what I have been thinking all along! Why do people bother making up such rubbish...as if O'Neil is going to find a house in Winchester before he is even offered the job! O'Neil wouldn't be spotted at St Mary's unless it was for a press conference to announce his appointment! This is pie in the sky stuff...Les Reed would have been given a blue-print for the type of manager to fit into the structure of the club and NA is a perfect fit! I think the key phrase here is 'out of work at the moment'. There is a reason for this, and we can go down your list of prefered choices and review why they are out of work, and it aint cos they all got to the premiership and thought 'what the hell, I have no more to achieve in life'!
NA is in a job, is desirable as he is young and been succesfull and if you interviewd your lot above, and NA whos to say NA didnt come across as the most impressive?

Phil Brown= Interviewed and NC decided he was not up to it.

Zola = In Italy waiting compensation, probably put off by NC reputation.

Martin O'Neill= We were dreaming, while he wait's for MUFC

Chris Coleman= Sacked from all previous jobs, and Welsh.

Steve Coppell= Bottler, would have lasted less than week with NC

Alan Curbishley= Doesn't need the money, last took a team up when?

Probably the reason's why they didn't come here.

Nic on the N332 says...
3:59pm Wed 8 Sep 10

"Saints are understood to have approached Scunthorpe last night..."

So, the claim about the imminent (viz: on the brink) appointment NA is based on less than 24 hours 'offical' dialogue. Why then did NC wait so long after AP's demise before approaching 'the chosen one'?

Surely the Echo couldn't fabricate a story like this. Just look at the choice of of verbs used:

3rd para: "are thought to"
4th para: "understands"
5th para: "are thought to"

Not really the man I expected but but getting into the Premiership is a long term objective and what we need NOW is someone to get us into the CHAMPIONSHIP preferably THIS year. In that respect this could be a good choice. Whoever is chosen main thing is to get the PLAYERS motivated - thats whats lacking at the moment.

you do have point Mr Bournemouth, some of us need to be more realistic. But can you honestly say hand on heart that you would prefer to 'earn your money' than have someone come along and pump millions into your club and infrastructure? Imagine Bournemouth V Inter Milan at Dean Court? yeah?

Yes, personally I'd rather O'Neill, and probably a few others as well. But realistically NC can only choose from those who apply, and then NC will choose the one who he (and presumably expert advisors) believe will do the best job. They will be privy to information and expertise that we are not, so we must trust them to make the right choice - remember, NC will want promotion as much as we all do.
Whatever choice is made, we will have to believe it's the best one available and get behind the team. Whoever it is there's a good chance of a slow start for them, but we need to remove the instability, so we'll have to keep behind them as long as NC does.
I just hope they decide soon!

Saints need to act decisively.

With the sacking of Alan Pardew - SFC may have missed out on a potential Player and then the Transfer window closed.

The Loan Windows opens - and there is no move for any players. Delaying the appointment of a new Manager is not helping.

The Club will not bring in any players as they seem to be waiting for the direction of the New Manager.

David Healy is one player worth a look.

I believe his goal ratio and assists would be better than David Connolly.

His weakness and information on his goal drought below :

David Healy
He was sent out on loan to Ipswich Town during the first 2010 transfer window along with team-mate Daryl Murphy. He made his debut on February 6, 2010, helping Ipswich to earn a point. He set up Murphy to score with a cross; the final score was 1-1. He scored his first goal for Ipswich on February 24, 2010, in a 1-1 draw with Scunthorpe, salvaging a point and ending his goal drought by scoring for the first time in over a year.

There are of course a few exceptions....

Whilst there is no official news as yet I would give Nigel Adkins a fair crack as I would whoever our new manager was, Unlike most Saint's fans I judge Managers on results for Southampton Football Club first and foremost, and I give them time rather than judge the Manager before he has even been appointed? like some of the idiots above have! Reality is we are not going to attract a top quality manager to come to manage Saints in division 3 and whilst we all want the club back in the Premier League in the future we are currently playing in division 3 so get real and re-adjust your expectation levels to a more suituable level and concentrate fully on supporting whoever the manager will be and getting behind the team to first and foremost win promotion to the Championship or division 2?

Great to see that the club has enough integrity in not allowing any rumours to circulate. As a fan it is a little frustrating but at least all the real news is on the official website.
I take all the rumours and articles in the papers and sky sports with a pinch of salt.
However I would also like to add that there is no smoke without fire!
I have every faith in NC and his team.

These things take time because interviews have to take place and agreements made. Some may apply and not like the job or their employer improves their wages to keep them. NC may not get his first choice. Personally I want a manager experienced at lower league football. We can deal with the lack of Premier League experience when we get there!! We are in League 1 remember!! I am also pleased that NC appears to be looking at British managers. I would be very concerned if he was interviewing a bunch of foreigners with no experience here. Adkins sounds good and I would support him (as I would support any manager) but this may just be another rumour.

Based on the frequency of "understands", "understood" and "thought to" in their copy this doesn't exactly mean the Echo is one up on everyone else. "Talking compensation" is just a passing reference to some of the "formalities" which are publicly known.

What I do find interesting though is that if I was going for the job (or any job for that matter) I'd like to have a look round the premises, perhaps see my new office and find out where the coffee machine was. Out of all the so-called "sightings" in the area recently, NA's name has not been among them.

Still, if it does turn out to be NA, I will wish him every success.

I don't see that this can just be an Echo rumour if it's true that the bookies have stopped taking bets on Adkins.
I think he could be a good choice - he's got a reputation as someone who gets his teams playing good football, keeping the ball on the floor. If this is true then I think we could do very well with him; we've got a lot of good players who've been under-performing. Generally good players thrive playing proper passing and moving football, in my opinion.
While I've nothing against Alan Pardew, and will always regard him as one of the good guys, he did perhaps employ the long ball a bit too much for my liking.
Anyhow, whoever it is, let's get behind him and support the team. COYS!

He could be staying quiet because he hasnt a clue we are even talking about him as our manager !
or....he's never heard of us !
Trust me Adkins has turned job down, my mate works at De Vere Hotel and Martin O'Neill staying there tonight about to be unveiled in the morning as new boss!!!

Given our self imposed points deduction this year...it will not be a walk-over. Let's get the new guy in...deal with the fact that he will not be every fans choice...and get on with it. We have the players...they just need direction and motivation...the motivation bit is where WE have a real input!

Another 48 hours.

The speculation is great, The Echo is guessing.

The smokescreen has been continuing for 2 days now.

My hunch is that Shearer is coming home, he is just sorting out his contract with the Beeb it will all be sorted out by Friday morning.

Even though im not 100% sure of Nigel Adkins if he is to become the next Manager we have to get behind him & give him the chance to prove himself. He is not silly & knows what pressure he will be under.Ive been reading comments from Scunny fans & it seems like the club have been selling many of their best players & not given the manager any money to spend...this may be a chance for him to jump ship & chance his arm. This may be good for him but potentially for us it may be suicide.
If Nigel Adkins is our new Manager then i will support him 100% as should all genuine saints fans.
By the way ive just seen Martin O'Neill eating a kebab in Bitterne Triangle....COYR

no jealously here my friend, you see we accept our lot, you still think you are in the top league, well your not, your arrogance will cost you promotion, start thinking league one and not some past glory.
we no were not in the top league but what we do no is were a top league club. any way horsted why you on are site do you minnow's not have one ?
you do have point Mr Bournemouth, some of us need to be more realistic. But can you honestly say hand on heart that you would prefer to 'earn your money' than have someone come along and pump millions into your club and infrastructure? Imagine Bournemouth V Inter Milan at Dean Court? yeah? Bet you wouldnt like to win the lottery either, right? Ive played at Dean Court and it will be a few years yet before Messi is lining up a free kick there.. whereas St Marys wont be waiting anywhere near as long.
arrogance was my key word, you have just confirmed it, good luck, I to played at the dell in 1974, back then it was a friendly down to earth club with, feet on the ground, now your expectation is too high, the higher you set your target, the more disappointed you will be.

Nice resume, think he would be a good fit at Saints. Definitely sounds like a good motivator and that has lacked on this team in key games last year. Comrades... let's not forget that it was not his fault AP got the sack. So if he does get the job, it is important that everyone give him a chance and get behind him 100% and with a positive state of mind.

Speaking of AP, I myself being a fan of his, kind of makes me now wonder about his sacking. I can understand Cortese not willing to give details on his sacking (right or wrong), but if AP is not even commenting now, almost two weeks later, then it makes me wonder if he possibly acted somehow unprofessionally within the club. And if that is the case, then Cortese will prove to be a true gentleman for not airing the dirty laundry. Just a thought...

So apparently O'Neill was being held as back-up in case Adkins turned the job down. Bet he'd love that! My guess is that Adkins is 1st choice now. His quote on teletext could be read any way you like. This is a man who has had interviews and is not stupid enough to say anything to upset his present employers until he has made his mind up or NC has made a firm offer. Phil Brown has also had an interview, knows he's not first choice so is talking up a storm in case he gets another chance. Don't get too excited until the OS says so. Let's get behind the team Saturday and our new manager when he arrives.

Southampton Heart says...

I don't believe the press anymore until its been confirmed on the Official Saints site.

The quotes today from Phil Brown are well worth a read too..if you haven't read them.

NC and his team are doing wonders behind the scenes...we are so lucky...our clubs future is so exciting.

I wonder who'll be the Echo's favourite tomorrow?.....the longer this goes on the more un-creditable the Echo reports are...which is a little sad.

I not a lover of the state of journalism in the Echo, Who will be the Saints manager saga, has rumbled on and just this story proves they're scrapping the bottom of the barrel, they are clueless.

Local BEEB news claim the Alan Shearer wants the job, maybe their following the Echo's lead.

I will follow your lead (enough is enough) and wait until it's a done deal on the official Saints website.

I had this confirmed by a contact at the sun on tuesday. Cortese was there discussing the situation with the "south coast clud situation" and gave away his prefered choice as part of the negotiation to resolve the issue. The sun did not print it as they decided not to give nicola any column inches. It will be 100% confirmed tomorrow. I met Adkins earlier this year and is a very insirational person. Do not think light of this guy. Regardless of what you may think to get Scunthorpe promoted twice and stay up last year was a great result. Also he agrees with the european approach of having different departmental chiefs so he can get on with the first team. He is very forward thinking. He came over as the sort of guy that could sell anything to anyone, he could be great.

You are an idiot. Yes, he got relegated from the championship once, but nobody expected Scunthorpe to stay up.

He got them back up, and they stayed up last season, on the lowest budget and lowest attendances in the division so he must be doing something right.

Nigel Adkins is a very capable manager and I firmly believe he'd be a success at Saints.

Let's cast our mind back to some other previous Saints managers:-

Strachan, the man who relegated Coventry. Didn't do too badly did he?

Pearson, who's only experience was Carlisle and caretaker roles. Didn't do too badly did he?

Dave Jones, only experience was at little old Stockport. Didn't do too badly, did he?

Harry Redknapp. Wealth of experience, kept West Ham up into the Prem top 10 when they were relegation favourites. Saved the skates from relegation in the second tier, took them up to the prem and kept them there. Came to Saints..... Oh dear.

I do seriously wonder about the mentality of some fellow Saints fans. Then I just come to the conclusion that they have an IQ lower than room temperature.

I don't consider myself above anybody, I just think a lot of the comments about Adkins are driven by ignorance.

Adkins wouldn't have been my personal first choice, but the guy has a good record and I think he'd be a success.

Still, we'll see. There a rumours doing the rounds that Adkins has declined the job offer anyway.

I reckon it could be Shearer, the game last Saturday was commentary on 5 live and Tim Flowers was co commentator and all he did was keep praising up Saints,i.e. the training ground, the stadium and fans. If Shearer gets the job I can see TF taking some sort of role at the club as well, they are good mates.
