Nigel Adkins' move to Southampton in doubt over compensation to Scunthorpe

SAINTS' move to make Nigel Adkins their new manager looks to be in serious doubt.

Scunthorpe chairman Steve Wharton has claimed that the 45-year-old is refusing to resign from his job with the Iron, which he alleged Saints wanted him to do in order to avoid a compensation payment.

First thing today, Scunthorpe put out a statement saying Adkins - who is understood to be on a 12 month rolling contract - and his right hand man Andy Crosby had agreed terms to join Saints after talks yesterday.

It was subject to the two clubs agreeing a compensation package.

But Iron chairman Wharton said this morning that the deal had not gone through.

“The situation is that Nigel was given an ultimatum last night by Southampton to resign and accept their offer," said Wharton.

“But Nigel was not prepared to do that. He wanted to walk out of Glanford Park with his head held high and everything agreed.

“I have tried to contact the Southampton chairman today but have not been able to get hold of him.

“I was not prepared to roll over and let Nigel leave for nothing.

“I wanted some compensation for what I felt he was worth. It was only a modest amount.

“From a selfish point of view I will be happy if Nigel stays with us.

“But I also feel very sorry for Nigel if this was a move that he had set his heart on.

“The Southampton people have been very difficult to deal with.

“They are probably not the right sort of people for Nigel to be working with.

“But at the moment I am not exactly sure what the situation is until I have talked further to Nigel.”

Because there are ways of doing things properly that's why!! This is usual procedure for Clubs to compensate others, why should Saints be 'exempt' from it? It looks as if the only stumbling block being the compensation details, nothing ever comes easy for us does it. We can do Scunthorpe a favour with a bit of finance in exchange for their best assett, that's business, but I hope Nigel is coming for the challenge rather than the money, and that we are prepared to welcome him on those grounds. Otherwise bring on the next candidate, whoever it is.

The communication is worse than the final years of Lowe! At least people, both in the media and in football liked or at least respected Rupes. His only mistake was not wasting more of his money into a football club.

Cortese seems stingy at best and needs to remember that it is not his money. I'm sure if Markus was around he would of agreed to pay the compensation. If you're not willing to pay compensation don't go after someone elses manager!!

Although I like the idea of Adkins Brown was my 1st choice because of this reason and Cortese has the reputation of being a good businessman, 'what a load of rubbish' and 'you don't know what you're doing should be sang towards Cortese'

This all dramatised and omnipresent in every football deal that goes on. Thing is, the media hate our club as present due in part to a slight misdemeanour on our Chairmans behalf, in not letting photographers into the ground. On top of this, the Scuny chairman is peeved as he's losing a very good manager. He's bound to be bitter and he's bound to want compo.

How flippant for those fans to say "just pay up". In the same sentence you're all saying NC knows nothing about business??!?! Ironic.

Show some faith and patience. There are many issues here but slagging off our chairman willy nilly ain't gonna help no one.

P.s. I love the fact Adkins was a Physio at Scuny before he became Manager. Does this not tell us how influential and talented a man he is?

It is usual in these matters to compensate a club for taking a contracted manager or player, so what does NC think he offers that makes SFC the exception?

If his move to SFC is scuppered by this compensation fiasco then NA will have shown his cards, lost respect from his Chairman - and we'll be without the manager who looked most likely to take us up.

Stay tuned!!!

Saints are now in an awkward position. The first choice of Adkins is now in the public domain but if the deal falls through, what's Phil Brown (or whoever is next in line) going to feel like?
If the second choice has got any sense he will ask for more money and Cortese will probably pay out more than if he had agreed compensation.

Scunthorpe appear to be doing their business in the media, Nicola will not like that, it’s a shame, but it may end the deal.

Their Chairman is just putting them in a strong negotiating position, while also providing Adkins with a moral way of backing out.

They have used thief official site to announce the deal early. Basically saying that all Cortese needs to do is agree to their demands of compensation.

Can this not be settled by a tribunal? It would seem a shame for Nigel if it couldn’t

I've just written on the "Scunthorpe confirm Nigel Adkins accepts Southampton manager's job offer" web page and the we have the "Nigel Adkins' move to Southampton in doubt over compensation to Scunthorpe". What is going on in the Echo offices?

The Scunthorpe chairman's reported words, “The Southampton people have been very difficult to deal with. They are probably not the right sort of people for Nigel to be working with." sound very much like someone who is unhappy at loosing his man. Also it does not sound very business like. It would not surprise me if Saints just walk away from this without a word to anyone.

We just have to wait - again! This is almost as bad as waiting to see who would take over the club. But, I do think NC et al are good business people and will decide what is best for the club.

Cortese what do you really want from our club? You choose a manager who is at a club already when you could have chosen other managers who without jobs. Now you are asking a Guy to resign from his job to become manager because your being tight and arrogant.

For once put the club and us fans first and do your job. Support our club and help us get promoted instead of trying to make a name fir yourself. It should be the team making the talking. To do that they need a manager.

So pay Scunthorpe and get Adkins in before Saturday if that is man you want, get this club going again.

On another subject can someone advise on something I heard from a member of staff at the ground did the best manager we ever had (Strachan) leave because Beattie failed drugs tests and Gordon asked for him to be kicked out but Lowe would not support him and Strachan walked, is this true??
That is true, he tested positive for coke!!!
So because of another contol freak of a Chairman we lost Strachan. Why dont they get on with being Chaiman and let the managers do ther job.

This is leaving a bad feeling all round before the poor guy has even started.I dont know Cortese but he doesnt seem the easiest of guys for sure. Can we just have some owners who can relate to the fans and show they care please. This might be business to Cortese but its far more important than that to us lifelong fans.Cant see that Adkins is any better than Pardew (who should still be at the club in the absence of any real explanations) but wish him well but it seems to me the club want a lapdog not a manager! The club were going forward now we are going backwards again thanks to Pardews sacking. The new guy is up against it before he even starts. The club suffers from poor communication and to the fans it feels like contempt sometimes. These are my first ever comments in the echo column.

We dont want a nobody to manage southampton we have tried loads before like branfoot, wigley, wott

Grrrrr!!!! He's not a nobody!! Just because you've never heard of him - that makes YOU ignorant. Most football people would agree that Adkins is a great prospect.

I hate these 'football fans' that know nothing about football.

Well if you do that then your employer has no rights to compensation, this is the real world.
I take back what I said earlier if that is the case. good point.

Look we arent negotiating over a second hand sofa!
Yes, this is a football club bit its also a business that needs to be run like a business. If NA applied for the job, we shouldnt have to provide comp. If Nichola called him, then we should pay.
Its a stumbling block, buts its all in the negotiation. Scunthorpe are resigned to him going, NA wants to come, and we need him asap.. the I's are just being dotted and the T's being crossed.. put all your hand bags away

A jolly good point actually mate - hadn't thought of that.

He has a fixed term contract, compensation is required if that contract is terminated before the end of that term. Thats the law of contract.

I think as usual we are jumping to all sorts of conclusions with just dubious media reporting and we again dont have all the facts. I think we all are still left with taste of wuupert in our mouths and were so accustomed to shiiiit news about our club its almost become second nature for some of us to throw the rope over the saints lynching tree.

Cortese out! lol

I cannot believe some peoples attitudes.

“Cortese has delusions of grandeur”
“Cortese is as bad as Lowe”
“Cortese has dragged Southampton trough the mud”
he is “He is rude and arrogant and is alienating everyone he works with”

What delusions do you have? The guy is trying to achieve success with a club that was a gnats whisker from extinction a just over a year ago.

The media hate Saints - I don’t Care
Other teams hate Saints – I don’t Care

Us against the world, not us against each other.

Is that the Chairman it's NC from Southampton - can we have your manager for nothing 'cause we are a big club going places and we need the money for other things - blah blah blah.

What a joke - laughing stock of the Football League - must now be an unemployed guy and even he will know that he wasn't top dog on the list.

IMHO NC would be quite right to pay compensation if he contacted Scunthorpe. He would be equally quite right to expect Adkins to pay his own contract up if it were Adkins himself who applied. In the silly world of football "business" and all the silly money sloshing around before suddenly, mysteriously, drying up, it is good that Cortese makes a stand about paying out thousands (a million?) unnecessarily. The way some of you guys talk on here it's as though you have that change in your pocket and would willingly pay it yourself! Go on then.

Fed up with all this now, do we have any money or not? What happened to the training ground, all the grief with the echo disclosing the plans and then not build it. It's becoming some sort of secret society, if the family don't want the club any more then just sell it! Just want to watch a football match!

It seems to me that the majority of saints fans need a reality check. You are a middle of the the road league 1 club, what entitles you to a "big name"? "Big names" go to big clubs, that is not you. Stop living in the past. Nigel Adkins is a fantastic man manager, he makes players think they are better than they really are, and he gets players working together and playing for eachother. He is a man of morals. He knows league 1 inside out, which is what i think you really need. Not some fantasy about Martin O Neill!!! Please get real!! Dont know off hand how many teams bounce straight back to the championship after relegation, but little old Scunny have, led by Nigel Adkins of course, the man with no track record!! Don't make me laugh. You can count Leeds, Notts Forest Sheffield Wednesday and Big old Southampton as teams that haven't gone straight back up.just show a little respect for a man that would do a great job for you, although that looks in doubt now. Your loss i'm afraid. Good look searching for your "Big Name"!!

So the scunthorpe chairman is using the echo to up the ante on his negotiations to get max compensation. How come the scunthorpe chairman is leaking all thisinfo and everybody takes it at face value and oOn the back of this guy and the echo everybody starts attacking the club and our chairman.

is that bell ringing in your head, tw@t
what do you mean can we have your manager for nothing,
he applied for the job,
then i don't suppose you have applied for many jobs.
As for being top dog, every manager has to prove that they are the top dog, this is still a great opportunity for any manager.

There are echoes of the Elliot Ward/Coventry FC debacle about all this. Do you remember... Coventry blew the embargo and spoke to the press and Ward started celebrating - all before contracts were signed. Meanwhile NC still had other options open and was still looking elsewhere.
You haven't got a job til you've both agreed all terms and signed the contract.
