Guly do Prado waits to hear whether he will remain a Saints player

Guly do Prado Guly do Prado

GULY do Prado says it is not up to him whether he remains a Saints player or not – but insists he is loving life at St Mary’s.

The forward, who turned 29 on New Year’s Eve, gave himself a belated birthday present with a pair of goals in yesterday’s 4-0 win over Exeter.

Guly has been on loan from Italian side AC Cesena since August, with Saints holding an option to buy him this month.

The Brazilian revealed he is enjoying his new life on the south coast, but explained his future is out of his own hands.

“I’m not really worried about that at the moment, I just want to help the team,” he said, through Portuguese-speaking teammate Jose Fonte.

“I’m settled in Southampton and I’m really happy here.

“I’m working hard and I hope everyone can see that, but at the end of the day it’s not my decision, so we’ll just wait and see what happens.”

Guly wants to stay, plays well (after a slow start) and we have an option on him. The devil must be in the detail. If the price is right, I'm sure NA will sign him.

On yesterdays performance surely it will be a yes he has now had 2 really good games on the trot. In the early days I thought that I could play better than him but now he has settled more I have changed my mind and surely things can only get better when he has settled his family in locally.
So definately a thumbs up from me

Sign him up and keep Puncheon at St Marys now he's proved he has remembered how to play football again.

Didn't realise that Guly can't speak English. It's no wonder he has taken a while to settle. he can obviously play when he needs to but he must struggle when understanding the game plan of the Manager ( and he has seen more than one of them!), frantic half time talks etc. Nearly scoring a hatrick is not going to help us negotiate his price down though

Didn't you think it was odd that he's rarely seen without Fonte :-). Guly and NA are lucky we have a Portuguese at the club. Let his football do the talking and if he gets a permanent deal, then his family will help him settle.

Most of the skates that invade this site cant speak english either but it doesnt stop them.Guly is Brazilian and speeks Portugese. So does Jose so I doubt that there are any real probs when it comes to NA needing to get any points across. If NA wants him I believe NC will make it happen...Personaly I would sell on Puncheon as I dont think he was happy in div3 and use that cash to get Guly

Many of us were unsure as to whether the club should sign him or not. Well Guly knows this is the month we either send him back, extend his loan or sign him and he made a statement with the way he played yesterday, he said "I want to be a Saint" and that's good enough for me!

I believe the price was agreed at the time the loan and option to buy was agreed.

Saints have had two fantastic home wins and the bad weather meant the injured could recover and be available for the manager to select. That does not mean we do not need to strengthen with 2-3 top players to guarantee promotion and form the back bone of a championship side.

In the years that I have watched Saints we have had some good and some great players, some honest journeymen, and some indifferent players. We kept getting players in that filled a need and borrowed promising youngsters from top teams (and I don't think that always worked). This is the first time that I feel a team is being built to a plan. NC and NA are only interested in players that fit that plan. For instance, NC hasn't shown any interest in taking loanees from Prem clubs and I bet a few of them would be happy to put youngsters here with our set-up. Of course, some players don't work out and some mistakes will be made, but I feel that for once someone is in charge.

Fran the only player they have bought in is Chaplow, which is of course an excellent start. All the others are academy or AP's signings.

Two great home wins with virtually a fully fit squad can mask the thinness that is exposed when we have a few key injuries or suspensions which we saw recently.

But you're dead right they must bring in players that are here to feature in promotion and pushing on and not just make up the numbers.

We won't get many loan players from Prem and Champ Teams because NA doesn't really have an affinity with the other managers especially the ones that were players.
Look at the players Gus Poyet can get due to his connections.
He's got at least 3 or 4 loanees from old mates of his.
That aside I'd rather do as you say and build a proper side and progress through the leagues with our own players.
Brighton and Portsmouth can carry on flouting the system whilst we quietly assemble our OWN teams for the future.

I'm asking because I have to admit that I don't know. Apart from knowing the better teams in our league by name, I know nothing about them I'm ashamed to say. When in the Prem I knew the other teams and their players but have never got a grip on either the Championship or League 1.

You're not alone, nor have I.

I suppose what I am saying is that if we have true strength indepth then when a player is injured/suspended/ou
t of form we should be able to replace him with one nearly as good. That will give us the "consistency" we have all been talking about.

If that is not the benefit of having more money than other teams then what is?

Exactly,he`s playing well for Millwall because he`s happy there, he clearly wasn't happy with us so surely this just adds up to holding Millwall up to ransom because plenty of other clubs will come in and offer 500 grand plus for him.Hope we sign Guly, sometimes you have to wander whether some our supporters realise that mlost clubs at this level would die to get there hands on a player like Guly.If he hopefully signs for us the art of Nigels managment skills will be to use the 4 quality strikers at the right time and the right place.Personally for the Daggers game i`d bench Guly and start with Lambert and Barnard, simply because i think that these 2 know how it works and what is required against sides like Dagenham away.

One of my favourite moments yesterday was the Ref giving Guly an ear-bashing after a foul in the middle of the park, and Guly looking all contrite and as if he was taking in the lesson properly and repenting, thus avoiding the chance of a booking, when all the time my brothers and I were chanting "He don't know what you're saying" since I doubt that the ref was fluent in Portuguese!

Anyway, language can't be that much ofa problem in the game; he only really needs to learn "man on", "mine", "down the line", "shoot!" and "yes! You f*cking beauty! What a great goal! Can I hug you and kiss you in a manly fashion, please, you lovely player, you?"

That's why Puncheon should be recalled even if we do sign Guly as well.
Now he's looking like the player we thought we had bought he could still become a Saints hero and be playing against Millwall next season with us.
It's only 5 months until the end of the season and 7-8 months from playing in the Championship if all goes well.

I thought Puncheon was outstanding last season. He had a dreadful start to this season but kept getting picked, the fans got on his back as a result. Just as he started to come good we dropped him and then shipped him out!

We are told that NA is good with psychology, so it's his job to get inside the players head, find out what makes him tick, motivate him and get him playing his best for us.

I'd love to see him back but I don't think it will happen.

No we're saying we still need to have a decent size squad made up with decent players who can rotate or be used to replace injured/suspended players, whilst keeping the team strong enough to go and get one of those auto-promotion places or actually winning the league.
It's all well and good having a good first eleven but we need a good 25 so we can keep winning so we can get out of this league.

Paul Lucas says...
1:55pm Sun 2 Jan 11

Good arguments for bringing Puncheon back but you have to ask yourself who you're going to drop to put JP in. Chamberlain? Adam? because I don't think JP would want to come back here and warm the bench when he can get Championship football week in week out - which he is obviously good enough for. He had a good first season with us as Seedhouse says.
.
I know he's our player and we 'own' him but we can't make him play as he is playing now if we bring him back against his will if you follow my drift. I think we should cash in on a bad deal.

Junctionseven says...
2:13pm Sun 2 Jan 11

Chamberlain is being used sparingly to supposedly allow for his young body to develop etc etc blah blah.
He and Puncheon whilst both on fire could play a half each every week as long as they didn't get injured and still be fresh as daisies at the end of the season.
Both of them could also play full games as and whe suspensions and injuries are taken into cocideration.
I still think Barny might being spending a bit of time at Her Majestys Pleasure soon so w'll need another player ready to replace him in the squad. Jason Puncheon might come back and start playing out of his skin for us, who knows?
Now if we were to get Charlie Austin or another proven goalscorer then maybe we could let Punchy go but only for a reasonable profit and give Chamberlain full games every week until the end of the season. (We need to get Chamberlain and Lallana signed and committed to the crusade asap first)

I think Saint's should recall Jason Puncheon from Millwall, He would give us more width,(something we lack) and would allow Alex Chamberlain to be rested and nurtured. However Saint's played Jason Puncheon on the right wing and his hat-trick yesterday came from him playing on the left wing? So firstly have we been playing him in the wrong position? and secondly Adam Lallana currently plays wide left and is awesome there at the moment or do we move Lallana over to the right, or more central? Does anyone know if Saint's have entered contract negotiations with Adam Lallana? I would pay to watch a gifted, talented and exciting young player like him all day long!

NA doesn't let much out of the bag, but when asked about Puncheon he said there were private discussions with the Millwall manager. That means that we are not just pulling Puncheon back but arguing about his price. If he doesn't want to be a Saints player get the best price, NC. We can then get someone who wants to play for us. It's a shame because he played well last year but that's life.

Mind you, Punch said Millwall fans were 'the best' the other day, so maybe he's more suited to their kind of football.

Fully understand your reasoning for wanting him back, however I think we get attempt to get as much as we what we can for him from Millwall and use that money towards getting someone better, Puncheon has gone from a player who could the world alight to a player who couldn't switch on a light.

He scored a hat-trick and everyone wants him back, I don't, sell him and let's move on, the same goes for Wotton at Yeovil give him away or sell him, we are better than both of them, the lad Mills up at Doncaster I would bring back if they haven't already

Rumours of him going to Newcastle. That might mean a tidy profit. BTW dont bother with a sell on, get cash in the bank he will be disintrested again in 6 months
Exactly just get the best price and get a new winger in, someone who wants to come here and be part of something special.Punch has talent for sure but something has gone on behind the scene and he doesn't want to be here.Fact.

Rumours from Jordiland are a waste of inner ear movement. Every move at SFC will be for the better. OS, named statement or bubbles blowing it in the wind.

The Toons rumour is a Punch/Leon Best swap, & a few quid for us. Pardew has confirmed that Best can leave.
Someone said they saw Best at the Exeter match...

COYR Happy New Year All

n, how exactly is Gus Poyet flouting the system? He is simply using his contacts, it's called having an advantage...the same as Saints using their superior spending power to the rest of the division is also having an advantage. You have to make the most of the resources you have.
...And please do not put us in the same bracket as Pompey as we have not broken any rules or bought 2 fa cup final appearences with money we dont have.
Good luck for the rest of the season Saints...hope we are both in the mix in May.
