DANNY Butterfield believes Saints can still win the League One title, despite last night’s 1-0 defeat at Walsall.

Nigel Adkins’ men endured a terrible night, as they fell ten points behind leaders Brighton – and remained six behind second-placed Cherries.

But right-back Butterfield was refusing to give up hope of topping the division come the end of the season.

When asked if he thought it was still possible to overhaul the Seagulls, he said: “Definitely, as you can see tonight if we play like that between now and the end of the season we’re certainly going to win a lot of football matches.

“We’ll work hard on the training ground between now and Saturday and make sure we win the game (against Colchester).

“Obviously, after each game I’m sure people look at the league table.

“But we’ve got to keep our own house in order and start winning games regularly if we’re going to go up automatically.

“Every game between now and the end of the season is important to us, especially if our aim is to go up and win the league.

“Saturday is certainly a big game and I’m sure the lads will be raring to go for that one.”

Butterfield admitted Saints should have beaten the Saddlers, but he also insisted there was no point in anyone banging on about being ‘unlucky’.

“I think the initial feeling after the game is certainly frustration and disappointment having come to Walsall and lost the game,” he said.

“I think the amount of chances we created really on the night was phenomenal, but we’re sat here with a 1-0 loss, which is really frustrating.

“We’ve created ten or 15 good chances and we’ve not put the ball in the back of the net.

“If you do that you leave yourselves open at the other end. That’s football for you.

“The amount of chances we created tonight, as well as the performance in general was good.

“But, like I say, we can’t keep saying we were unlucky, we’ve got to be killing these teams off and moving onto the next game.

“It hurts, we don’t like losing football matches. The frustration’s there, but we go to Colchester in good spirits to win that game.”
