Emotional Adkins bemoans FA Cup exit

NIGEL ADKINS NIGEL ADKINS

SAINTS boss Nigel Adkins admitted he was “bitterly disappointed” after his side crashed out of the FA Cup last night.

Former Saints loanee Dany N’Guessan and ex-AFC Bournemouth star Liam Feeney scored twice in the last ten minutes to give Millwall a dramatic 3-2 win at St Mary’s.

Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert scored either side of half-time after Liam Trotter had given Millwall a 17thminute lead.

But Ben Reeves had what would have been a winning goal disallowed before Feeney scored a wonder goal in stoppage time.

Bitterly disappointed Adkins said: “We want to get back into the Premier League but I also believed we could have had a good cup run so I’m bitterly, bitterly disappointed.

“We had opportunities to win it and see it out and Ben Reeves actually scored a very good goal.”

Millwall will now be playing Premier League Bolton Wanderers in the FA Cup fifth round a week on Saturday.

“I’m down because I hate losing,” continued Adkins. “I believed in the players and that once they crossed the line we would have enough to win the game and we haven’t done.

“It’s not a good night for us. We got ourselves 2-1 in front and should have seen the game out.

Chasing shadows “The two goals we scored were good and the Ben Reeves goal would have put us 3-1 up.

“But the way we conceded tonight was not good enough and nor was the first half hour.

“The players are well aware of that. We were chasing shadows in my opinion, we got nowhere near it.”

Adkins then deployed Steve De Ridder in a more central role alongside Tadanari Lee and a far better performance followed.

“Once we changed our shape into a diamond formation and got control of it we could have maybe scored four or five goals in the second half,” he continued.

“But I’m disappointed as I wanted to get through this game and I trusted in the players we have to do that.

“We haven’t been winning sufficiently of late, but I want us to play a certain way and am totally responsible.”

Saints will now host Derby County in the Championship a week on Saturday.

Gave a few players a run out, chappers got an hour in,lallana is looking good ,and who gives a stuff about the cup at the moment ? Im hoping billy sharp and lambert are given regular game time together to click. I get the squad rotation bit but he must know his best side by now and sharpy wont need bedding in time.
Anyway its not the defeat its about the reaction he gets from the players that will shape the rest of the season. Great manager, and nice to see the other side of him instead of the "draw a blue line and move on " speech.

" The Chairman and Manager signalled their intent to go up with their January deals. On the pitch all is not well right now, but throwing your hands up in the air bawling about it doesn't help either. Equally, pretending it is all going to be alright and sticking your head in the sand doesn't either. SFC is in a great place, we are 22nd in the whole country, let's try and enjoy it, and see if we can break into that top 20.

We need to rally behind the team. We HAVE over-achieved, however I do still feel form will be found again. It is do-able.

I refer you to Wolves in the season they won the title......

In this period they only took 11 points from 39, and still won the title. Like ourselves, they had a storming start, struggled and looked like throwing it away between December-March and still did it.

Believe.

This is far, far, far from over.

Nigel wasn't his usual self last night. Whether he thought that Bolton at home was highly winable, and then once in the last 8 with some of the big gus out you can start dreaming of Wembley. Or it might just have been that he froze his nuts off and was p*ssed off that we had a perfectly good goal disallowed. Just hope it was not a sign of Cortese having an Abramovich moment and Nigel feeling under undue pressure.
As someone else said lets get at least 7 out of the next 9 points on the board and see hw big the gap is then. This is a strange league, look how Boro were pre Christmas and they have slipped back a bit, while Brum have stormed up the league. Everyone is going to drop points our destiny is still very much in our own hands, and I have not seen a better team than us in this Division.

Shame to go out of the cup but it's not really that important as we need to focus on the league given our fantastic start to the season.

I am a bit concerned about our defence though. That's 4 home games in a row without a win and we have conceded sloppy goals in all of those games.

Suddenly there's a lot of pressure on the Burnley game ahead of the trip to Upton Park next week. You get the feeling the next two games really are a make or break situation.

So, we had a goal disallowed for offside that was onside and they had a goal allowed for onside that was offside. Sounds like we weren't great but also unlucky. And Adam hit the bar!

If we can just get a couple of back to back wins the confidence will come flowing back, and that will see us back to our best.

Very recently Nigel set an all time Southampton consecutive home wins record. We turned up and just knew we would win. Unfortunately that ended with Kelv being out and slowly the confidence ebbed away.

IMO I think reeves should start v burnley on Saturday and I know that sounds like a big statement but everytime I've seen him(Preston, millwall H/A) he's good enough. He looked like he could unlock the door and he would give us another surprise element for the opposition to work out. We need try and find something NEW and UNEXPECTED for the opposition to think about.

Despite being out of touch and with key players out injured, we still took a point off of Cardiff and Birmingham, who are in the best runs of form they have had all season.

Last night we had 6 players in the team who have just, in the last week or two, climbed off of the treatment table, so would have been lacking match fitness.
We also started with 2 players who have spent most of the last few weeks on the bench and a new guy seeking match fitness, giving us a total of 9 outfield players who were, in all probability, not quite on top of their game.
Yet despite that, we only failed to win because a linesman wrongly disallowed what would have been our 3rd goal.

Sure it's disappointing to lose, and yes our form hasn't been as good as what we have become accustomed to, but let's give them a chance to show us what they can do when they get ALL the big guns back in place and we can start each game with a settled line up.
I think people forget that our good run of form came from having a settled group of players, which we have not had for the last 2 months or so.

So here's the deal, a couple of months left of the season and we are well in sight of winning the title, or getting 2nd place, or a play off place, and if not those options, a great chance to give it a go next season. So thats pretty good right? Think of it this way, every team in that top 6 has each other breathing down their necks, so the pressure to perform is the same all round. We have had our bad patch for quite a while now and isnt it funny how it all coincided with injuries to some of our key players at a time when we were playing some fantastic football. The point is, those players are getting back to fitness while we are still in a great position with a good chunk of the work completed. If we can just keep a steady team for the final push, It is ours for the taking.

Just think he was upset to be subbed. He probably thought it unjust, but truth is he was in danger iof being sent off. Like you I am a fan of his, 10 goals from open play says the guy must have something.Even to get 10 taps in requires a level of skill at this level. Don't get the anti Guly thing at all. The reason he was in danger of getting sent off was because he was chasing and challenging.
Of course he could have gone straight doen the tunnel becaus ehe was freezing his Brazil nuts off.

Can't understand some people.Last night some guy was moaning that on occassions we were trying to play a longer game with Lee and Steve running into the channels. This was done with a certain amount of success and enabled us to mix it up a bit. I bet this guy is one of those that berates Nigel because he has no plan B.
Must admit I am not a fan of the diamond.Think 4-1-4-1 can work better, you can still control the ball still retain some width.

Would you say to Nigel's face? It is easy to hide behind an an alias.

If the game were as simple as you suggest then every team would play like that all the time - but there would still be losers. I don't see Manchester City, Man United, Chelsea or Liverpool, to name just a few top teams, playing 4-4-2 all the time! Saints have had injuries and suspensions to key players and have not done so well as a result lately, but we are still second from the top of the Championship. Come back and have a go 'bigfella' if we get relegated.

Nigel needs support right now and thanks for what he has already achieved in such a short time - not anonymous name callers.

If it didn't matter I'd be like the rest of the missing 11,000 fans (at every cup game) and sit at home listening to it on the radio - then going on to forums saying it didn't matter and that the league was the priority. So Mr Adkins is disappointed. So he should be. I truely belive that he is making an easy job difficult.

As I posted last night he appears to delight in changing the team both before and during the games for no apparent reason.

Please play your best team every game and concentrate on winning, not giving fringe players a run out just to keep them happy. Will they not in any event break into the first team on the basis of their ability in training alone or when a regular is injured or out of form?

Turning to changes during games. We were winning at Portsmouth and he makes a substitution. Result? Two points lost and Gully is made out as a waste of time.Clearly he is not as his goal scoring record shows, and with not a penalty in sight.

Last night we are winning again and another substitution. Result? We are out of the cup.

For pity sake man, please just keep it simple.Pick your best side and stick with it, play 4-4-2 and if it is not broken then do not attempt to fix it,particularly when we are winning.

Whilst I admire all the posters who say all will be well and keep the faith surely a few counter but constructive thoughts are acceptable on this site please?

Spot on Mark, constructive thoughts are always acceptable and you have posted yours sensibly ...... it is the anoymous, abusive, foul mouth name calling rants, that are unaceptable in my eyes. I don't think you can blame him for giving those players coming back from injury a game can you? Otherwise Chaplow will never get back to match fitness. Also, we're extremely proud of our academy, but if we play the same 11 players for every game then youngsters aren't going to break through, with Reeves having a very good game as said above. I would say that at the start of the season a consistent team was a factor behind our successful run, but due to injuries and bans you've got to switch it round sometimes, and cup games are the best time to do this I reckon.

Please get behind the team, the manager, the chairman. We will be promoted this season as champions.

The reasons why I think West Ham and Birmingham City will get automatic promotion,is that both Clubs have the best managers in this league, and can take the pressure right to the end,we can't.

I think we can, how much pressure was there on us last season to get promoted? Yet we managed to win game after game and get 2nd

I'm sure Nigel would love to play his best team, but it is no coincidence that our drop in form has coincided with a plethora of injuries & suspensions.

Now that they are all over (just about) & our new signings are bedding in, he will be able to play his best team & we will rediscover our form & consistency.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't we field a pretty settled team from August until November?

SaintMark, your thoughts are constructive.

"Big Sam" is not one of the best Managers in this league!

Sure, Hughton is doing a great job but he is still unproven.

I'd rather have our Nige any day.

I believe he took the pressure right to the end extremely well last season.

St Ret. FA cup mattered to me. We had a great chance of going on to the quarter finals at least. I paid to go to all of the other rounds including the League cup - because it matters to me. . If it didn't matter I'd be like the rest of the missing 11,000 fans (at every cup game) and sit at home listening to it on the radio - then going on to forums saying it didn't matter and that the league was the priority. The league IS the priority but current form suggests we'll miss out on that too. . What will your retort then be?
I love the F.A. Cup and am gutted we went out last night. It matters to me also. It is a great competition and every team who is succesful now in the premiership started there run with an F.A. Cup win.

There have been enough fiascos in recent rears.

Not only was the ball moving but I felt the guy was offside when the rolling ball was passed.Strange when just prior to that he ordered a retake due to a moving ball.
Likewise I could not see why Reeves had his effort ruled out.
On such decisions rest the outcome of so many games now.
Millwall go on to a pay day,Adkins becomes more open to critics and our season will be judged on our final place.
I believe NA will no longer be Tinker man and will have to select his best side, if he persists with the mistakes he is making, which are obvious to most supporters, then he risks his position.

Are you serious, Adkins is the best manager we have had for years, it winds me up when top class managers like you come on here shouting the odds about how he should get the bullet because we are only second in the league, "if he persists with the mistakes he is making obvious to most supporters"
elaborate, he has been tinkering because of injuries and suspensions, not out of choice. We had used the fewest amount of squad players in the league up until the injuries.
The only problem i can see is that after the injuries and suspension the players which replaced them are just not good enough i think you can get away with one or two but we had six first team players out for several weeks, that is going to hurt any side in this league.
Obviously he picks he best side he can every week to play against the oppositions style, to give us the best chance of victory.
you say "he will no longer be tinker man and will have to select his best side."
Do you honestly think he picks teams to under perform.
A good result saturday which will give the lads coming back another 90 mins of match fitness and things will start turning around.

With no distractions from being in the two Cup Competitions...

It is vital to get the WIN in the League on Saturday...

The lads need to be really UP for every game now and keep the work rate up to "boss" and "demolish" the Opposition.

Shoot on sight could be good - Adam Lallana tried one on Tuesday Night which forced a save from the keeper which he spilled ..... and it gives the chance of a tap-in or the corner..

WE DEMAND THE WIN SATURDAY.

Listening to Nigel.. he says enough. 442 is old hat now and let us down a few times.. When we play against quality fast wings and midfielders sometimes our guys are going to be out paced or muscled and we do have to adapt.
It's not head in the sand to just say.. the boss knows exactly where the problems lay and we trust him to sort it. We are 2nd in the league, positives are coming at every outing.
We're in a hard place, give credit to the opposition and get behind our team.. our gaffers have the experts and the players to get the job done.. It was always going to be game at a time... still is. Lets do this together as one.. One Southampton.. the team needs a boost. What can Soton do for the lads? Get positive and all those thinking about going but haven't yet.. ignore the talk of the slump and go along and see the football they play now.. we have some classy lads out there and they are going to start taking teams apart very soon.. COYR
Salute to the regular home supporters who sing there heads off.. Salute and a toast to our champaign away supporters... just brilliant Pride of The South.. our real 12th man. Cmon shake off the doldrums, stop the diddums and sing up again.. I know you will.. Love you lots.. wish I were there to see it when the lads turn it on.. it's going to be fantastic. Chin up Nige.. Our Gaffer is top drawer. England may be about to get a manager with a Monaco bank account in his dogs name or perhaps one with a record of affairs and drinking clubs.. but the after that in a couple of years will be Nigel Adkins.

Up to our recent wobble we were over achieving on what even the most optimistic Saints fan could have expected. If we had had a mediocre start to the season and were sat outside the top six looking to break in to the play offs everyone would have been happy. I have still to see a better team than us in this division, we have been outplayed on occassions but so has every other team. We have suffered with injuries and no team is going to be able to have 5 or 6 first choice players out carry on regardless. Last three games we have drawn with the two form teams in the Division, and with a bit of luck would have beaten Cardiff, and lost out to Millwall when we did not have our first 11 on the field. Ifwe can get our best 11 on the field we have enough strength and now variety to come off the bench and change things. Some people have rose tinted glasses and very short memories. Our record at St.Marys was nothing short of remarkable, it had to end some time and we have now had to endure 4 games without a win, what a catastrophe that is. We are second in the league are the top goalscorers and have just brought in a proven Championship goalscorer and the centre forward from a top 20 international team. When we are winning everyone on here is overly optimistic and as soon as we have a blip no matter how minor some on here seem to be on the verge of phoning the Samaritans. If we don't get 6 points from the next 9 then the rest of the season will become a major challenge, if we get 6 or more then I think we will be top 2. NC said they had a 5 year plan to get to the Premiership, unless he has changed his mind we are in a fair position to achieve that or even better it. If we go up people had better take a reality check because I do not expect us to be going in hock to buy players on inflated salaries, the club will continue to be run as it should be in this day and age as a business. That might mean lower Premier league status rather than an immediate push for a Champions league spot, what will the doom mongers do then?

If you read my comment nowhere does it say Nigel deserves the Sack, He has done a great job.I stated he risks his position. I am not the Chairman.
Pearson and Pardew were top class, look where they are now.
I am glad you called me a top class manager but I only won two trophies as a Manager.
To elaborate I mean that he has changed the shape and positions of players in many of our recent games. This leads to confusion and uncertainty in the team.
I appreciate that he has had to deal with the Hand he has been given and he has had a difficult time over the last two months.
Football is a game of opinions, if you interpreted my views and got wound up then chill out, when I said he will have to pick his best side I was stating the obvious.
By the way I agree with everything you have said apart from picking a side to play against an opponents style, thats not true.
