Fabio Cappello quits as national team boss

Fabio Capello Fabio Capello

Fabio Capello has resigned as boss of the England football team.

The Football Association has tonight confirmed that the Italian has left his role with immediate effect after a meeting at Wembley with FA Chairman David Bernstein and General Secretary Alex Horne.

It comes after he criticised the FA for stripping John Terry of the England captaincy over allegations he racially abused QPR's Anton Ferdinand.

Capello was quoted in the Italian media tonight as saying the FA had "gravely offended me and damaged my authority", causing problems for his integrity with the squad.

The move leaves the national side without a head coach, just four months ahead of the Euro 2012 competition in Poland and Ukraine.

Capello, who was appointed four years ago after a successful club career that has seen him win league titles in Italy and Spain, was unhappy his bosses had acted to remove Terry, who will face trial over the allegations after this summer's European Championships, as captain against his wishes.

He led England through a highly successful qualifying campaign for the 2010 World Cup, but the side crashed out of the tournament in South Africa, with a 4-1 thrashing by Germany capping a miserable performance.

In an interview with Italian TV this week he said he believed in the principle of innocent until proven guilty, and "absolutely" disagreed with the decision.

Former Saints boss Harry Redknapp is the red-hot front-runner for the role, although there is speculation current England Under 21 coach Stuart Pearce could be installed on a caretaker basis.

England's next international is later this month, a friendly against Holland on February 29 at Wembley.

The FA's full statement said: "The Football Association can confirm that Fabio Capello has today resigned as England Manager.

"This follows a meeting involving FA Chairman David Bernstein, FA General Secretary Alex Horne and Fabio Capello at Wembley Stadium.

"The discussions focused on The FA Board’s decision to remove the England team captaincy from John Terry, and Fabio Capello’s response through an Italian broadcast interview.

"In a meeting for over an hour, Fabio’s resignation was accepted and he will leave the post of England Manager with immediate effect.

"David Bernstein said: 'I would like to stress that during today’s meeting and throughout his time as England Manager, Fabio has conducted himself in an extremely professional manner. We have accepted Fabio’s resignation, agreeing this is the right decision. We would like to thank Fabio for his work with the England team and wish him every success in the future.”

"A media conference with David Bernstein and the Club England Management team will take place at Wembley on Thursday at 12 noon.

"The FA will not be making any further comment until the media conference."

Well I didn't see that one coming. The stuffed shirts at the FA obviously don't like criticism, whoever it comes from.

Can't stand Terry, represents everything bad about football and players in the Uk. But it is innocent until proven guilty. The FA undermined the England manager and he was right to say so.

All of this has occurred because of the actions of Mr John Terry. His actions have caused havoc within the England set up going back to the Brdige affair. We then had the messing about with who should replace him etc and then Capello made the mistake of re-appointing him captain. For me, a man who parks his 4x4 in a disabled parking bay is not fit to be the captain of England. That is contemptible. Whoever replaces Capello should do himself a favour and not even select Terry for the squad.

Rubbish manager.

Utterly embarrassing how half the country thought he was some sort of intellectual just because he wore glasses and talked slowly in a foreign accent. The man's a dimwit.

PLEASE NO!! ..ANYONE ........ but not Honest Harry.
.
Capello, irrespective of his success/failure was undermined by the disasterous FA and had every right to walk away.
.
IMO the FA should have discussed it with him first and then persuaded him to do the deed.
.
In addition Terry is innocent until proven guilty in theory .... however ... the racial side of things is such a hot topic so taking away his captaincy was the least/most that the FA could do

Only surprise is that he lasted this long.
I'd be surprised if harry took it, with all his skeletons waiting to fall out of his closet. If he does, he will have to realise its a fixed salary and there are no transfer bonuses...
Although he might get a few quid from agents whose players he gives an England cap to...

The England team has been undermined for years by the players. Alf Ramsey never gave the players the idea they'd ever be picked again, no one since has achieved as much. Bobby Robson came close, no one else has since. I'd give Hoddle another go, like Ramsey he'd have no interest in the players and their inflated egos.

Harry Ripknapp would be the could worst thing that can happen to the England team! He will enforce the stupidity of stereotypical English football players who stomp around in the belief they are the best in the world when they are far from. FA do not know what is a good manager they just pick anyone who has had their name mentioned once or twice in the tabloids.

As for Terry well he enforces the stereotype of a boy who spent his youth in 1950s borstal. Unfit to live amongst normal people. He single handedly screwed up the World cup for the entire nation in 2010 ! Good riddance to him !!

I went off of football ages ago.
Can't stand all the performing when
they score a goal. Hugging, sliding
along the grass with hands waving and
opening their gobs like a Great White.
A bunch of Prima Donnas. Big Girls
Blouses most of them.People moan about Bankers salaries. What about
Footballers. Their money is obscene.
Add on the fact that England are rubbish, it's not worth turning on the
Telly to watch.

Has anyone else heard this news and just thought 'meh'? I literally could not give a flying fig about the England team. Unless, however, they come and ask Nigel to do it - in that case it's WAR.
