Saints strikers are going nowhere

David Connolly David Connolly

NIGEL Adkins has hinted it is unlikely he will loan any strikers out during the emergency window.

The Saints boss is almost overwhelmed by options in attack following the January captures of Billy Sharp and Tadanari Lee.

Adkins has six players at his disposal in the first-team squad that could comfortably be described as out-and-out forwards.

Sharp and Lee joined a striking corps that already featured the Championship’s top scorer Rickie Lambert, David Connolly, Lee Barnard and Guly do Prado, with the Brazilian the only one in the group that can really double up as an attacking midfielder or wide player.

It's just too important the phase of our Season to think about loaning any of our Strikers out - due to lots of variables including possible injuries and suspensions.

We need to be " peppering" the opposition's goal with lots of shots on target .... and getting GOALS !!

Keeping possession for long periods but without an end product is pointless
is not good enough.

WE NEED TO START WINNING NOW !!!

WE DEMAND SUCCESS !!

WE ARE THE MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON.

The push for top two status starts Saturday with burnley at home, and then hits a key note Tuesday away at west ham.

By this time next week we will have a very good idea where we will end up come the end of the season. I predict four points from the two games, and an average of two per game the rest of the season.

The Lamb and Harp to start. We should start taking scalps again from here on out.

I don't buy this "we've been sussed" maloney. Yes teams press higher to stop us playing out and we need to adjust. But for me the main problem is we've lost the tempo and fluidity we played with which swept the opposition aside, certainly at St Marys.

Agreed ... tempo ... fluidity and joined up play ... plus very quick passing ...knowing your team-mates will be there to take it on ..

In the Coaching Sessions the Team need to practice very fast and accurate passing to develop the skill to LEAVE THE OPPOSITION FOR DEAD.

Hey Seedhouse - seems to me that we've lost that fluidity because other teams get in our faces; we try to bring the ball out and they immediately pressurise, so we end up either going back to the keeper again, or knocking a hurried ball long to Lambert or Lallana, our two main 'outs', which more often than not gives the ball - and the momentum - back to the opposition. But more importantly, that harrying is stopping our players playing their natural game, as they did at the start of the season, and makes them 'think' as they try to overcome the problem, and its that process of 'thinking' rather than 'playing' that leads to errors & disjointed play. That, incidentally, is what my wife's training is designed to overcome - email me on tonybet2003 at yahoo co uk and I can tell you more about it. Apologies again to everyone else for that!

We have struggled recently due to injuries as we do not have the strength in depth to be able to afford losing Fonte Lallana and Lambert. Seedhouse we haven't lost our fluidity and tempo, other teams have stopped us using, what was, our greatest asset.
I think our midfield contains to many flair players and a bit of tenacity is required.
I also think that if we continue to play 4 luxury players in the middle then the full backs should concentrate on defending, maybe then we wouldn't get caught out on the break by teams,
which is happening more and more of late
2 wide men and 2 wing backs is leaves us very vunerable to the classic simple counter attack.

This Harry thing is no joke George. As I explained on the previous thread my troublesome cocker spaniel Fenton has done a runner.

In hindsight I should never have allowed him to listen to the TV news. He was only partially relieved to hear that Harry's dog Rosie's bank account was innocuous. This at least eased his mind about his 'life savings' - dozens of bones buried secretly in our garden.

But I think what's really been playing on his mind is the 'bung' he took from the water collection barrel in our garden last summer. He has also heard me singing 'Pay Up Poopee' and I suspect he's got it into his head that his daily excretions are taxable activities. There was the usual queue of five dogs at the solitary lamp post in our road yesterday morning and for the first time ever Fenton refused to join it.

I have explained to him that he has nothing to worry about, especially with his abysmal writing, reading and organisational skills - and in any case the chances of HMRC ever winning anything against Poopee or anyone associated with it seem to be more remote than Tiddlesborough Utd's chances of beating Barcelona 9-0.

If I manage to get him back, I will explain that Seedhouse recommends maximum fluidity and he should pee tax-free as much as possible.

Ladies and Gentlemen,It seems that some of the wheels have come off the bus.The company is carrying out a complete check of the vehicle to ascertain where the fault lies.Hopefully the fault can be rectified soon and we will have a smoother ride for the rest of the "journey".
But seriously,anyone have a clue what's happened?.
It can't all be down to injuries or suspensions,we have a big enough and skilled squad to get through this.Is it a case of suddenly being aware of the pressure of being at the top for so long, against all our greatest hopes.Or is it perhaps that teams have closely examined our style of play and have found the key to stiffle us.
Not long ago we were 5pts clear, now we are 4pts adrift and only 6pts clear of the lowest playoff spot, additionally we are only 8pts clear of the 11th placed team.Dumped out of the Carling and FA cups by inferior teams and now threatening to grasp defeat from the jaws of victory.I'm not a Saints basher,I've supported them since '58,was on the pitch at Brisbane rd when Paine's goal got us promoted, was at Wembley when Stokes' goal won us the cup,and at White Hart Lane when we thumped Forrest 5-0 in a second replay, etc, etc, etc.
And I was at St Mary's against Walsall when we all sang "WE ARE GOING UP" "WE ARE GOING UP".....I'd like to be singing that when we play Coventry!!!.

Mr Adkins team selection and formation is proving difficult here is my selection to help you play 4312 Davis in goal, Fox,Jos if fit, Fonte, and Butterfield(best crosser of the ball) midfield lallana Hammond Chaplow, Lambert in the hole with Lee and Sharp up front. The reason Lambert is in the hole is that the oppositions central defenders will have a problem do they come out and mark lambert leaving Lee and Sharp to run in around the back its simple they will be terrified of ricky they cannot leave him alone aka space for the forwards.Simples

I took Tuesday's game with a bit of a pinch of salt in terms of importance - it was obviously a chance to get a few players back to match fitness.

The one thing I didn't take with a pinch of salt was the number of times players did "take a pop". At last! I think NA must have had a word and it seems finally to have got through to the players that they aren't going to get dropped for shooting (and missing) rather than passing. I detected a different spirit in attack. Players were looking up for shooting chances a lot more than in the past.

And the simple truth is that if we're putting on pressure up front, opposition teams will not have the freedom to shut down our play at the back.

I look forward to plenty more goals.

SAINTS have only got the League to focus on - NO EXCUSES . TIME TO DELIVER.

Nigel has the luxury of lots of Strikers and other players available and may like west hooooooof not have a keeper on the bench ...

He is the Gaffer - and he needs to make some very important decisions on Team Selection ...

I was impressed last Season with some of his decision-making ...

If a player tomorrow is tiring and like a "wet rag" from all his efforts - we can always sub him and use squad rotation.

WHEN YOU PUT THE SOUTHAMPTON SHIRT ON - IT MUST MEAN

Tactics aren't my strongest suit I admit. But I find it hard to believe that some seem to be saying we were untouchable by anyone romping to victory time and time again at home and then overnight the whole league sussed us and we now can't buy a win. Doesn't sit right.

And if it's that easy to counter a team playing quick passing football how come Barcelona haven't been sussed? (I know they have better players than us but they are also playing against better opposition.)

Fluidity is the key :)

Costa Baz says...
1:29pm Thu 9 Feb 12

The way to counter teams that close you down quickly is to improve the off the ball movement of players waiting to receive passes. Is that what is needed with the Saints or do the midfield players just need to become more compact?

I think that earlier in the season, we played with a more compact and more narrow midfield, which meant passes were shorter and more difficult to cut out, which gave us the "fluidity" that Seedhouse refers to.

But in order to achieve that compact midfield, NA played with 3 central midfielders (3 from Cork, Schneiderlin, Hammond, Chaplow) in the team, and guess what? He was slagged off for doing that, with fans saying he needed more width.

When we play with a natural wide man, we seem to lack the overlapping runs from the full backs (don't know why but that seems to be the case), so in order to give us a more compact midfield NA often goes to the diamond, which in turn frees up the wide space for the full backs to get forward.
That gets slagged off as well.

If we go on and win this league there will still be those that come on here and spout off about how "we nearly missed out on promotion" rather than rejoice in a fantastic success.

Missing out on promotion this season, would be disappointing given our good start, but there are several other teams in this league that were rightly installed as favourites to go up, ahead of us. If we should fall behind them it will be no disgrace.

the reason we have struggled at home lately is because most teams now deploy a very deep defensive holding midfielder, playing just in front of the two central defenders.this allows both central defenders to play slightly further apart thus closing out any space in the "channels".this also allows one or both full backs to push into more attacking positions when they have possession, giving them a numerical advantage from there they can launch quick counter attacks knowing they are covered defensively in the center of the pitch.we have struggled up front because we lack a striker with real pace who can take advantage of the space vacated by the full backs by making runs from central areas into the wide areas so dragging defenders about more and creating space for players coming through the middle.tanadari lee looks as if he could give us that and also i noticed that de ridder caused millwall problems when he switched to the middle making runs from inside to out.I don't know if sharp can play that way but my guess is nigel signed him to play off the shoulder so hopefully we can stop them pressing us and we can stretch the game lengthways as well as across the pitch and get back to winning ways.and before anyone asks, yes i have played at a decent level and did some coaching as well.

You forgot tempo Seed.

Not big on tactics myself, but I think we have a 'Trafalgar situation' here. Up until then warships engaged each other in parrallel lines (as in the 4-4 or 4-3 in the familiar football 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 line ups) - and uncertain or stalemate results often ensued.

At Trafalgar Nelson placed his two columns directed perpendicularly to the parrallels - and broke through and won easily.

This means a double arrow formation would be ideal.

I reckon Nigel will deem this too radical to risk in which case he should go for a traditional 'Doughnut' with Tadanari in the hole - or the more flexible 'Ozone Layer' with Rickie in the hole and Cork as stopper.

So true. I'd be really disappointed not to go now that we've come this far, but I would take time to refelct on how far we have come and look forward to next season.

Anyway, IMO, early season, we had a bit of luck, decisions seemed to go our way and we nicked goals here and there. Yes, we also turned a few over, such as Boro and BHA, but rarely destroyed a team for 90 minutes.
In short, we over achieved.

More recently, wins have turned to draws, refs have swung matches against us, injuries have added up and the rhythm has gone.
In short, thing have evened up. And we're in an auto spot!

Us supporters should just get behind the team and start pretending we know about tactics, pushing up, sitting deep etc etc as football tactics are far more complex than we understand we dont know alot about football otherwise we would be in the proffesion so sit back sing loud and proud and enjoy the promtion push.

Dont we play 433 anymore or 5321 as going with the diamond shape all the time
Get them wingers down the wing thats the only answer and lets see the midfield shooting at will.

We seem to have got into the habit of not winning recently, but we do have a squad of players who should be able to be promoted automatically, they need to start believing again, keep the faith!

I think we have seen a number of changes taking place within the Club since November following an incredible start to the season.

Up until November we had a closely knit team and squad who were all stars, all of whom believed in one another to get the job done.

Added to this we have a wonderful manager, whose squad had minimal injuries and everything could not have been better.

We have to ask ourselves what happened to change things and what is needed to bring back the spirit that existed up until November?

I think the first thing was Chappers injury This guy has a huge impact on motivating the team, such as Marsden did a number of years ago. He is the one who motivated the team and his absence has had a big impact on the post November results.

I think the confidence the squad had has declined and it is difficult to pinpoint any explanation for this other than Chaplow's absence.

So here we are with several new players and a number of the academy players doing well. This means the closely knit squad that was so successful has been considerably enlarged.

With a much larger squad we need to regroup and ensure that the team spirit that existed prior to November remains. My fear could be that some of the players may not be happy sitting on the bench or being excluded from the squad.

It is all very well having five or six strikers but at least 2 of these strikers will not be playing regularly and how will they react to this?

You have to wonder how Gully will react if he doesn't make the team. Here is a player who scored a lot of goals and was a part of the closely knit squad that started the season together. Some criticise him when he doesn't have a good game and forget how much he has impacted on the team.

Anyway hopefully I have opened up some points for discussion as we all want to see Saints back in the Premiership .

It is how NA handles the situation from this point forward that will determine whether or not we are promoted. Hopefully NA will motivate a larger squad as successfully as he did with a smaller closely knit squad

I don't buy this "we've been sussed" maloney. Yes teams press higher to stop us playing out and we need to adjust. But for me the main problem is we've lost the tempo and fluidity we played with which swept the opposition aside, certainly at St Marys.
I agree. I think teams always knew we were a passing side, they just didn't show us enough respect and sat off us letting us pass it about. A fair few of them got hammered for their efforts and have taken note.

I agree we need to get the tempo back. At the start of the season we were also quite ruthless in front of goal. I think with players coming back and some good additions in January we will start to gain momentum, and just at the right time!

Because until Lee and Sharp turned up none of the players had the pace to do it. Last season Oxo did it.

Seven out of the next nine and all the doom and gloom merchants will be all smiles again. This is a marathon not a sprint, we got off to a flyer and are in danger of being pulled back into the chasing pack. We have as strong a squad as anyone in the league, nearly everyone is back and our first 16 are a match for anyone, and we have another 5 or 6 waiting in the wings, before we even start to play the kids.
Ben Reeves looked class on Tuesday and I would be really tempted to give him a start on Saturday. He was looking to play the ball forward whereas I think we have a tendancy to play along the line. i think 3-1 Saints on saturday with Billy getting off the mark.

Ontario Saint had some good points.
If I was Guly, I'd be peed off if I was dropped. Second top scorer, mostly from midfield. He sacrificed his own game to play up front for the manager when we were short of strikers, would that be fair treatment ??
To get team spirit , you should promote players who have recognised positions when a first teamer is injured
( or off form )
What would you feel, if you were overlooked when you have been shadowing a position and someone is switched to the position you think you should be playing in ??

Because until Lee and Sharp turned up none of the players had the pace to do it. Last season Oxo did it.
Seedhouse i'm not talking about speedy forwards our back four would rather pass sideways when there is space to move the ball forward. Our middle four would rather pass the ball back to the back four instead of moving it forward. I mean the times they could be going forward five or ten yards with the ball instead of passing sideways and giving the other side time to set their defence for when the ball finally is passed forward. If we did this they have two choices ..1 back off in which case we keep going forward or 2 come towards the ball and leave gaps in behind them for our boys to exploit. That's how we use to play it in my day and it worked. Football is not rocket science it's pass and move ready to collect the return pass.

I love to see the ball being run forward and players shaking markers looking for the ball that will make stars of em. That ball is what Nigel has been going on about and he's getting frustrated. Lee has the look of someone who will change things up front in answer to the call.

places have to be earned.. he was lazy Ball worked like crazy and was master tactician. Jimmy Melia was a rock him and Gabriel with Paine would be unstoppable. Paine and Wallace would get the ball in to Ron.. anything stray Mick would bury... Deadly. Le Tiss off the bench late for a set piece play would be fine.

Reading this post was like a long game of chinese whispers. Getting back to the original point: sadly we don't see as much of Saints down this end of the world (NZ), but (bottom line): even from this distance what bits we do see and the reports all point in the same direction - we're now leaking goals which midfield and strikers can't compensate for. So maybe another centre back should have been priority after all during January. No good pouring more and more water in to a leaky bucket if the holes in the bottom are getting bigger and bigger.
Adkins must have had words behind the scenes but unfortunately others will have seen that St Mary's is no longer the fortress it was earlier in the season.
It's not too late to stop what is fast looking like a rot but the Millwall result was a disaster, a right royal opportunity to front up against a Prem side and use them as a litmus paper for next season. Upside: it should be the kick up the pants needed and results can only improve. It will also maybe be Adkins's sternest test to date.

Oxo played in midfield and he ran forward with the ball. Puncheon does the same, only not as well.
