Former Saints boss Harry Redknapp is today the red hot favourite to succeed Fabio Capello as England manager – just 24 hours after he was cleared of tax evasion.
Mr Redknapp was cleared of taking bungs in an offshore tax dodge, and described the “five-year nightmare” that had engulfed him and his family.
But within hours of jurors accepting his stringent denials that he cheated the taxman, the England boss announced he was resigning, seemingly clearing the way for the former Saints boss to take over.
Mr Redknapp, the current Spurs boss, was acquitted of avoiding tax on any payments over £189,000 found in a Monaco account named after his dog.
His not guilty verdict, and that of co-defendant Milan Mandaric, blows the final whistle on an £8m police investigation which failed to yield a single conviction.
It can also now be reported that the former Pompey chairman and club’s ex-chief executive Peter Storrie were also cleared of £600,000 tax dodge charges at a previous trial.
Mr Redknapp and Mr Mandaric hugged as they were cleared on all counts.
Speaking outside the London court, Mr Redknapp, who was flanked by son Jamie, said: “It really has been a nightmare, I’ve got to be honest. It’s been five years and this is a case that should never have come to court because it’s unbelievable really. The jury were absolutely unanimous that there was no case to answer.”
Mr Redknapp was at times moved to the verge of tears in court as prosecutors alleged he told a pack of lies to get off the hook. But jurors accepted the defendants’ evidence that the Monaco account was nothing to do with footballing matters.
The verdicts mark a disastrous end to an exhaustive inquiry into football corruption by the tax authorities and City of London police.
Chris Martin, of HM Revenue and Customs, said in a statement: “We have no regrets about pursuing this case because it was vitally important that the facts were put before a jury for their consideration.”
Bookmakers were last night offering odds as short as 1-3 that Mr Redknapp would replace Fabio Capello as England coach.

Firstly if the FA are stupid enough to appoint him he will be found out as hes hardly likely to able to do big transfer signings to improve the team.
Also I have heard the tabloids have loads of dirt on him as soon as the results go against him you will see the red tops start printing the stories.
I for one will stop supporting England if he is appointed and I know there are a lot of Saints and Portsmyth fans who feel the same.

If we take the emotion out of this, we are left with the fact that Redknapp has won one major trophy (and that courtesy of a kind FA Cup draw and a final against a team from outside the Prem) and that is simply not good enough. I am not a fan of his by any stretch but given the situation we are in, I would give the job to Beckham for this tournament and review afterwards.
