Bogeyman Austin out to maintain perfect scoring record against Saints

CHARLIE AUSTIN CHARLIE AUSTIN

Saints will have to tame their nemesis if they are to get back to winning ways against Burnley tomorrow.

The Clarets boast a fearsome young strike force, including a man who has scored against Saints every time he has played them.

Former Poole Town striker Charlie Austin travels to St Mary’s having scored four times in four matches against Saints and looking to keep that remarkable record going.

Alongside Austin is the prolific Jay Rodriguez, who Saints offered £5m for in the summer and is sat just behind Rickie Lambert in the Championship scoring charts having netted 17 times already this season.

It is Austin though who will strike fear into the hearts of Saints fans who are desperate to see their team get back on track with a win to consolidate their second place in the table ahead of a trip to West Ham next Tuesday.

Good call Echo ...

Charlie Austin is a right royal pain in the ars* for SAINTS Supporters.

I don't think he is as profolic as he was in League One but will need marking out of the game.

It's the lull before the storm .......

Yet another negative headline from the Echo. How about something positive such as Billy Sharp out to score on his home debut? Stop building up the opposition all the time!
There is too much negativity already at the moment, last time I looked we were still 2nd in the league, a win on Saturday and we will be on our way again, COYR!!

Talking about people who are a pain in the 4rse and have in the past done their fair bit to screw us up, I notice that 'Arry is to be given the England job on Monday. Hope not!

What was it Shearer said, 'move heaven and earth to get him'? Grief!

Glad to hear NA back Stuart Pearce. No trouble with him carrying on until the summer, although I like the idea of Hodgson or, further afield, Hiddink taking charge.

As for Austin (and Rodriguez), good for him, 'the lad's done good', I don't care. I'll be focussing on Rickie, Billy and Tadanari at the other end.

Now is the time to forget about the opposition and put all our energy into getting behind the boys. If a pass goes astray, dont moan but stand up and support the team. Show them we believe by singing their praise and they will believe and produce the football we all know that they can play.
We are in the best position we have been in for a few seasons now , so take no notice of The Echo headline. They are one of the small group of non believers AND PRINT NOTHING BUT NEGATIVITY.
We are second in the league with fewer games to play as the weeks go bye.We did'nt get there because we had a points start on the other teams, we are there because we are SOUTHAMPTON , the best team in the league
I have not seen it for myself but, i hear E HOWE is claiming they have nothing to fear at SOUTHAMPTON. That is because when you get knocked out they tell me you dont feel a thing. I think he knows he is going to get knocked out but wont know what's hit him.

Don't worry about the negative headlines by the Echo. When you consider their relationship with the club it is to be expected.

The next two games represent a watershed for Saints and if we are to maintain our challenge for automatic promotion we must win against Burnley and get at least a draw with West Ham.

Our home performances are in decline and our away performances are improving. We need to re-establish fortress St Marys if we are to be serious contenders for automatic promotion. In my opinion the way forward at home is to use our new signings to good effect. Speed up play from the back and midfield and offer the opposition a variety of problems to solve. Including a little bit of route one football with long passes delivered by Kelvin down the channel for Billy Sharp or Tadanari Lee to chase and hold up. Then we will have the chance to get to the by line and cross the ball or play it back to our strikers. Or play the ball through the gaps in the away team's back four for our runners.

If we continue with our slow stereotyped build up play and allow ourselves to be closed down in midfield by close marking or by the deployment of a fifth midfield player in front of the opposition back four we will not only not achieve automatic promotion, we will struggle to make the play-offs.

Change is required; we are too predictable at the moment. I hope the new players give us the opportunity implement that change.

Confucious says...
11:14am Fri 10 Feb 12

I must admit the Echo does wind me up a little by assuming that the general newspaper maxim that 'bad news is always bigger news than good news' (and therefore attracts more readers) applies just as much to local sports coverage as is does everything else.

If you look through almost any newspaper you will find the vast majority of news is bad or scary. Last week my national paper reported in a big headline that living standards in Britain had fallen by 2% over the past three years. Over the previous 50 years living standards rose by at at least 3% every three years but never once did this merit a big headline.

The only way this can be explained is that our brains are hardwired for loss aversion - thus the thought of losing something is always more powerful than the thought of gaining something and a threat is always stronger than an assurance.

This can be seen perfectly in the Echo's story emphasising the threatening 'bogeyman' Austin rather than the reassuring prospect of Billy Sharp's debut home appearance.

I wonder though if the Echo's choice of emphasis for it's local sports reporting is actually a 'turn-off' rather than an attraction? I think it probably is.

Having said all that, if I was running the paper, I'd likely go the whole hog and get even more readers by announcing that Burnley had just signed on loan the Lizard King from the 5th Dimension of Nazkabar. Now, even with Hooi and Jose back, that would be something to worry and talk about.

No Bart? It's an idea, as others have said.

However, no Guly? No Hammond? It's a pity it's 5 on the bench, but with such restrictions, we can't right now afford two youngsters (perhaps not even one) on the bench.

I don't think Adkins will pick any youngsters until the end of the season. We need experience now, so my team would be;

It is about time the club fed some info to the Echo so we can all pull together and get behind the Saints. I am sure NA is all to aware of their strikers but we have an abundance of quality strikers to pick from and I am positive NA will pick the right team for tomorrow.

1. Fonte missed a lot of headers that he usually gets (thinking maybe his match sharpness and or fitness needs some improvement and time)
2. Aaron martin missed a lot of headers and tackles. Worst of all he looked shaky and unsure at times.

Think you may have got the wrong end of the stick there Stras. The playing staff met today and decided they would fight to the death for the right of Herman Hreidarsson to have babies - as a symbol of their fight against HMRC oppression (or reality as one doubting Thomas chipped in).

Anyhow, they must be serious because they've called in the Poopey People's Front crack suicide squad.

I gather Appleton's last words were "No-one, and I repeat no-one, must kill anyone today - and I want to make this absolutely clear, even if they do say Jehova."

Dead right! That's exactly what every other local paper does for it's local sports teams... they write them Up with buoyant headlines and facts.

It Should Be:

"Second placed Saints line up with an almost full strength squad for the first time in over two months against 11th placed Burnely who dropped points last week against a lack lustre Posh.
Nigel Adkins was bitterly disappointed at dropping out of the FA Cup and says though the lads are smarting they've worked very very hard and will come out firing with all guns blazing today."

Re: The Skates, I've just found this lovely quote from Appleton:

"we will keep fighting - right to the death."

Glad he can see where it's all heading.

Other Poopey news: Woger and Woderick have been weleased from their contracts for wobbing the wevenue.

(What a movie that was!)
Administration? It's a doddle!

There is too much negativity already at the moment, last time I looked we were still 2nd in the league, a win on Saturday and we will be on our way again, COYR!!
Dead right! That's exactly what every other local paper does for it's local sports teams... they write them Up with buoyant headlines and facts.

It Should Be:

"Rickie the Goal Machine and Sharp Edge"

"Second placed Saints line up with an almost full strength squad for the first time in over two months against 11th placed Burnely who dropped points last week against a lack lustre Posh.
Nigel Adkins was bitterly disappointed at dropping out of the FA Cup and says though the lads are smarting they've worked very very hard and will come out firing with all guns blazing today."

Oh and Dear Adam.. how can you write: "It is Austin though who will strike fear into the hearts of Saints fans" You of all people should know Saints fear no one!!
Yeap 3-0 Burnley!

That's because he DOESN'T live here and DOESN'T support Southampton. He's a WUM - either a P*mpey, Brighton or (God help us) Celtic supporter.

Just ignore the fat tosser and hopefully he'll f*ck off.

I think NA needs to change personel or formation/tactics in order to change our fortunes, our recent form has been poor but players have failed to perform and with our current squad players should be fighting for there place in the team and if they dont then drop them NA simple as? Whilst we have looked very shaky we have against Bristol City, Leicester, Cardiff and recently Millwall started very slowly and let the oposition dictate the tempo of the game, we need to come out of the traps and get at them and put them under pressure and tear them apart like we were doing at start of season. coyr

The last two games have shown Saints as no better/worse than th two nearest rivals for promotion.

The next two we have to show we are the best or face the fact the Championship is more likely than the Premier League next year.

This is not being negative but the time has come for no more excuses. The SQUAD and NA have to put up and beat Burnley and then at least hold West Ham (who are overated - play badly but still get results).

Lets not get 'hasseled' out of these games and then conceed sloopy goals

On the subject of Paul Robinson joining on loan i cannot see how this would be a bad signing in any shape or form? this is a player with huge experience which can play various roles and has been in the top 2 leagues alll his career he is also a current PL player which could join us on loan and improve our squad so what do you mean by better than him?

OMG would you care to explain what is 'negative' about the story!! It's just pointing something out that is fact!! If you want wishy washy stories about what 'might' happen in the game then just create a thread for others to comment on then!! I'm not defending the Echo but it does seem to be a case of damned if they do and damned if they don't on here - especially when it comes to plums like you !!

More often than not you build the
opposition up.

I would have used the word 'predictable' not stereotyped!! but I do agree with you !

Could the navy use Fratton for an Ammo and chemical dump now they are down sizing.. Pompey could play at the navy sports ground.. it would handle their fanbase easily with seats for almost a hundred.
