Redknapp: I'd have to consider England job

Harry Redknapp Harry Redknapp

HARRY Redknapp admits he would consider taking the England manager's job but insists he will not be able to combine the role with his current position as Tottenham boss.

The Football Association are meeting today to draw up a shortlist for the vacant position after Fabio Capello resigned on Wednesday.

The FA are keen to appoint an English or British manager, and ex-Saints boss Redknapp is overwhelming favourite for the position.

The 64-year-old, who has taken Tottenham from relegation candidates to title contenders in little over three years, was keen to emphasise again today that he is only thinking about his current job at Spurs but admitted he would consider replacing Capello if the FA came calling.

Redknapp said: "It wouldn't be easy (leaving Spurs). It would be very difficult. I'm happy, but if the opportunity comes, and I get asked, I'll have to consider it."

I have to keep pinching myself when I keep hearing that Harry Redknapp is the man for England. Why? Because he is English. Blimey, how short-sighted is that. What has he won in 30 years of management. One FA Cup, and he led Pompey to the brink of financial catastrophe to do it.

Tactically he is at best questionable. He was a disaster at Saints and left Pompey in the lurch twice.

His age at 64 is not a recipe for a long term future as England's No 1. We need someone with a good knowledge of English football, a proven winner and who can handle the fickle national media. And that has to be Jose Mourinho.

Meanwhile for the Euros, I give Stuart Pearce and Terry Venables the baton until Jose is ready.

Harry Redknapp - your having a laugh.

People want an English manager to manage England, it's not being short sighted, foreign managers have hardly worked out well...

What has he won, he won the FA Cup, what should he have won considering the teams he has managed? Capello had won a fair few things and how did that turn out...

Tactically he is questionable? Is that how he managed to beat Inter at home with Spurs and come close to a draw away from home with 10 men. Inter being defending Champions of the CL at the time. And also beating AC Milan, winning at the San Siro I believe...

And then he's 64, I don't understand your point there, you want an older manager because they have vastly more experience than a younger manager. Also, it's only really a part-time job, if he can manage a club team on a daily basis i think he can handle a tournament every 2 years

By the way I am a Saints fan, and yeah he didn't do a great job for us, but we were hardly great when he took over were we. Time to get over it

i'd like Mourinho, but he's too young, he's even said he wouldn't want an International job at this point in his life.

Just heard that Honest Arry will only consider doing the England job for the Euro's, as long as they are used and untraceable! :o)

I am afraid that limiting your options just to English managers IS short-sighted no matter how many want it. Surely the best man for the job should be the man the FA go for.

Should have won more - damned right. He has managed FIVE top flight teams (if you count Pompey twice). Apart from Saints he's had mega-millions to spend so I would expect at least one win over European opposition.

Tactical nous. Read what Anders Svensson has to say in tonight's Echo. And played under Redknapp.

64 years old. So you think we should entrust a new England dynasty to a man who collects his pension this year? Hardly a long-term proposition in my view.

Oh and on Capello, let's he's had the best win average of England managers for a generation. He's taken us to two Championship final stages in succession. I'd say that isn't too bad.

Harry is a big no from me.

Redknapp : just what England need (or should I say deserve). He says (and I am not sure I believe him) he can't read, write, text, email, etc.. A good match for the overpaid lot in the England camp. They'll all be at the same level.

With him managing our national team, we'll win nothing - I can almost hear the excuses now.

We need someone intelligent and morally sound (Martin O'neill springs to mind).

I suggest Redknapp becomes an advisor to HMRC, they obviously need someone who is very street-wise!
