Sharp out to end St Mary's losing streak

Billy Sharp Billy Sharp

BILLY Sharp will be aiming to make it third time lucky when he makes his home debut today.

The Saints new boy finished on the losing side on the two occasions he played at St Mary’s as a visiting player.

Ironically, 25-year-old Sharp is the only current Saints player from the 2004 academy final, which he and his Sheffield United youth teammates lost 5-1 on aggregate.

Leon Best and Dexter Blackstock scored two of the first-leg goals in a 3-1 St Mary’s win for a Saints team that also included a 14-year-old Theo Walcott as well as other former first-teamers like Martin Cranie, Matt Mills, Andrew Surman and Simon Gillett.

Sharp was also involved when Saints won the second-leg 2-0 at Bramall Lane.

But he has made only one other appearance at St Mary’s.

In May 2008, exactly four years after that academy play-off final, Sharp was in the Sheffield United first team that Nigel Pearson’s Saints beat 3-2 to avoid relegation from the Championship.

Come on boys! 3 points and we will be back on course. Am confident Sharp will be up for this. By the way, why do I keep reading redknapp is the the People's Choice for England? No one asked me! Sounds like that means the media's choice. Half decent manager granted, but they like him more because in his eyes he's a "good bloke" and he's not Johnny Foreigner. Anyway, bit of a tangent, 3 points today please Nige!

Sharp must start, Connolly's had his chances and imo he's better starting from the bench. Barnard's not fit, Guly's out of form and Lee needs time to assimilate to English Football.

Excited and supremely confident about a good result today, as I was before Millwall, Birmingham, and every other game.

After a bad result, reading NA's reaction on the OS starts building back up the confidence and belief knowing that he knows where things have gone wrong and what needs to be done.

Then we read the day before the game that NA has had a great week with the team, training sessions gone well, the whole team is buzzing and raring to go, and as a Fan, to me, this restores any niggling doubts that may have arisen from the back of the last game. Then reading all of the comments on here is the icing on the cake.

Everyone is up for this. We will win today I have no doubt. We are back on track, with the bus and the boat on the train. What the hell, lets get a plane in there aswell cos we're flying high (We all bring the cake with that icing, very important!). Near full strength team to choose from, bring it on.

I've been a staunch supporter of the Echo and will remain so but reading around other teams papers they run with good stories about the latest successes of the team and players. The way they write in a positive vein lifts and informs fans.

The Echo running tales of how good opposition strikers are and how long we've been in a slump etc fuels our boo brigade and is frankly depressing. It's childish and unworthy of a newspaper.

If the Echo did start reporting decent sports facts with a strong leaning of support Southampton Football Club I'm sure things would improve for them.. who knows they may a Puncheon style meeting. Although I think Saints needed Punch more than The Echo.

If the press coverage seems negative, remember that Nicola banned the Echo from SMS (so long ago now I can't even remember the reason) and the club tried to charge the media fees for mentioning the club's name and printing photos from the games. Perhaps a more constructive attitude from Nicola would result in more positive press coverage?

First half Nigel will hopefully keep it tight and play doughnut or bagel formation with Billy in the hole - or onion ring with Rickie in the hole.

Second half we'll really go for it with Swiss cheese or colander formation with everyone except Kelvin in the holes.

Just to be on the safe side, my lucky Buddha's fat belly and nose will be rubbed before I leave home - and I shall have my lucky pants and snorkel mask on.

My point exactly. Most other clubs have a good relationship with their local paper, feeding them "inside" information before the national press can pick it up, giving the fans incentive to actually buy the paper; in return for which the paper prints stories with a positive slant, many of which have actually been drafted inside the club. Everybody gains. But here things are done differently. So the Echo produces stories recycled from other sources, including our opponents' papers. Little wonder they are usually negative. Wake up NC! Time to make peace with the media.

I'm struggling with the team today, normally it's predictable but it's a massive game and everyone's fit (or is Guly carrying a knock). Keeper, Back 4 and RL, BS are shoe-ins. But who are the other 4? Lallana is back playing well; Puncheon has been excellent; Cork is quality; Guly scores and creates; we've been poor without Chappers (but is he quite ready?); Hammond is the driver; Spiderman is my favourite but has turned into Ray Wilkins.
So I'm going left to right Lallana, Hammond, Cork, Puncheon. But I feel really bad about Guly and Chaplow. And I've not even mentioned Falque. Our bench will look huge - T Lee, Lee B, Guly, Chaplow, Bart. No defenders, Cork and Hammond can play at the back if required.
Is anyone else more confident about naming the 4 across the middle?

Surely NC's media policy is about control and profit. Only release what you want to release and charge for it. If the media don't like that, then fine. You publish what you want to publish on your own web site and charge the supporters for the inside track. If you can't make money from the 'Media' make it from your own media. Sound business sense and NC has editorial control. It also gives the club the opportunity to make money from advertising that would have gone to the Echo. The behaviour of a smart, silent, Swiss businessman.

Not what we want, but we are 'emotional' shareholders in SFC not financial shareholders or business managers.

But I do agree with your point. I would prefer it if the club had a better relationship with the Echo.

But I fear revenue generation, censorship and control will rule until perhaps the club is sold sometime in the future. And even then who knows?
