Adkins thrilled with positive atmosphere and result

Nigel Adkins Nigel Adkins

NIGEL Adkins believed that “positivity abounded everywhere” during his side’s 2-0 win over Burnley.

Saints earned a vital three points at St Mary’s this afternoon to strengthen their position in the Championship’s top two.

The result came at an important time, with the club’s results having slipped in the last two months.

Saints had won just two of their previous ten league matches, but looked back to their best against the in-form Clarets.

“Positivity abounded,” said a delighted Adkins. “It was everywhere. The crowd were great, the players were superb and we’ve got a thoroughly deserved three points from a 2-0 victory.

“Another clean sheet on the back of the Birmingham one. I thought we did look very resilient.

“Kelvin’s had one long range shot and a couple of crosses he did very well with.

“There was probably a ten or 15 minute spell where we’ve had to defend, and we’ve defended very well.

“So that was very pleasing as a team, and delighted we’ve got the three points today.”

Easy win and with the exception of Billy (and Lee for 2 mins) that was our normal side.

We did make it look easy - but we've done that for most the the season. Glad we are back to that.

Any thoughts on why Sharp was subbed?

And with 8 wins on the road Burnley's away form is second only to West Hoof so don't underestimate the significance of that comfortable win. Could have easily been more.

A return to 3 O'clock on Saturday and it is "Back in the Old Routine".
.
That was a really good win today, burnley had been on a good run before today, i.e. they had won 5 out of the last 6 away from home (whu, boro, seaweed,hu
ll & forest), but they were made to look very ordinary by Saints.
.
Nigel completely out played the "cry-baby" with our technical play and as I said it was "Back in the Old Routine" today.

Brave decision not have a keeper on the bench. Showed how important this game was to Nigel. Gave us the option to focus completely on attack if necessary, fortunately we didn't need to.

Looking forward to Tuesday, an opportunity to extend our improving away form.

Perhaps,as a former keeper himself, Adkins didn't want someone rooted to the goal line for the entire match?

Lovely. I've said it before, but the few set-backs we have had are OK .Those who panic like GHK Moron, Thomas Upton etc. are really pathetic. I think we will go on a run now, so those who are not really "supporters" but destructive people, will just have to suck it up.

Howe admitted he expected it to be the toughest match of the season. He was not disappointed. Any sort of result at WH will be welcome. Cardiff, Brum, Burnley, Wh, four tough clubs to play and get out of your fixture list. Add to that Brighton and Leicester The teams around us have to fulfill those yet.

And still more than your hovel can hold, when you sell it out (probably only in your cup final v Saints), so get back to your fish supper and we'll see you in April to finally nail the coffin lid shut n the farce that is your club.

Seemed to be back to our early season form today- quick passing, good movement, solid defence, well balanced and an encouraging lively start from Billy. Tadanari had what - only 3 minutes? - and even he made an impact.

Part of this will have been down to my wearing my lucky (albeit steamed up) snorkel mask, but of course it'd be silly to think such a comprehensive improvement today could be brought about without other more tangible forces being at work....cue my smiling big fat Buddha whose tummy and nose were rubbed before my departure to the match.

I expect no accolades for all this - 3 points is enough for me. Mind you, I think my big fat smiling Buddha merits a photo in next week's programme. He loves being idolised.

Interesting comment on Football Focus today, about how Martin O'Neil, when managing Leicester received letters criticising him on making little progress with the team.
O'Neil kept the letters and then, when he achieved promotion with Leicester, he wrote to each and everyone of those that had criticised him and asked what they thought now.

Can't see Nigel doing that.

Was in Alfred before game then prince of Wales and station after. Both had little atmosphere and pretty dead. Good result, burnley, like palace were beat before ball kicked and didn't offer much. Hos and fonte were commanding, full backs had poor distribution. Glad guly started as he deserved it, allana bright and cracking goal, mom. Sharp still finding feet and probably wonders why his strike partner spends most if his time on the flanks? Why when we are defending a corner do we not have an outlet? Not 1 of our forwards pushing forward but all 10 of our outfield players no further than 30 yards from our goal, we are inviting teams on to us. Forgettable 2nd half, all attack with little conviction. I predict adkins will be gone before end of the year.

I suspect you had too many sherbets before you arrived, you spent the whole game ogling wags so hardly a credible match reporter, Lambert is more than the proverbial goal hangar, he is, despite the jibes from the blue few and you, a very versatile player, he was providing, he was defending, and unlucky not to score with their GK making a brilliant save, and one knocked off the line. I guess you are still under the affluence of incherhol or else you wouldn't be posting the drivel that you are on here tonight, the goos shepherd is happy tonight so why don't you bah bah ger off.

But you bring my name into proceedings at 1919hrs!!! Such a great win and joyous victory why leave the pub after an hour (game over 1450, by the time you get out of stadium/over bridge say 1710hrs) I spoke to enough fans today to get the jist and reality of where we are. Supported saints all me life, will stick up for them when needed but will not follow sheep into believing all in garden is rosy when it is not. There is a very strong chance that pompey will go into Admin and have a points deduction before our home game against them. It is also possible that we could relegate them in that game. It is also not impossible we could end up top and they bottom. If I was a skate I'd keep quiet.

Those that critcised the club for not spending much on players also criticise Adkins for not doing well enough. That doesn't really stack up does it? Sven spent big and underachieved so he went - rightly so. There is no way Adkins is getting the boot this season so lets all get behind him and support the club. If the time comes where he is beyond his abilities it will be obvious to all. My personal opinion is that is a long way off yet!

Even if we succeed without breaking the bank? I suspect we are saving the real money to buy a few players to keep us in the Premier once we get there. We have learned the lessons taught us by the blue few. You have just got to believe in the five year plan, if that is too slow for you, you will have to search elsewhere for success.

I've read through all the above posts, & it's sad to see that the tone deteriorates after ghk appeared.

After a good win, a good performance (by all accounts, as I'm not allowed my own opinion as I can't get to SMS at the moment) & the cementing of an automatic promotion place, you'd think even the whingers might be happy.

Oh well, this is one very happy Sotonian abroad looking forward to being at SMS in person next season in the Premier League, & being allowed to have an opinion again.

The SAINTS Fans were out drinking yesterday - but there was a lot of migration depending on timings ....

(It's a bit like going to all the parties in your teens or early twenties ...)

BRIDGE AND CHAPEL did a fair Trade -but the good thing about the BRIDGE is that there is not an Away Fan in sight.....

SAINTS FANS are out in the Pubs and if you go regularly you build up the
trend and pattern .....

QUIET PUB .... MOVE - they're all drinking the other part of Town ....

AWAY GAMES - Turn up at the Away Bar and it's quiet - everyone's in the pubs and vice versa.

Need to network and use your mobile to fans you know to get the latest as it is happening now ....

Fast Moving - and unpredictable ... that's how it is ... Can't just sit in a Pub / drinking hole and wonder where everyone is .....

Guaranteed some good banter in the Josh Tree - Bridge - Chapel .... shift from your Regular to join in with the Red and White Army of Saints Fans.

BE READY TO SHIFT AND MOVE AT SHORT NOTICE .....

On to Football ...

YESTERDAY was Brilliant.

TODAY - the Hard Work should already be underway .... looking at the next game and West Hoooooooooooof.

NIGEL knows (like the League One Campaign) that if you put out your strongest and best players - the likelihood of success increases significantly.

west spam have a nervous crowd and SAINTS have to be on their guard for the ball over the top and the pace players to get the single goal. (That's how millwall undid our fringe players in the FA CUP) hooooooooooooof. west spam then play out a sterile hard fought battling game to secure their win.

SAINTS ARE BETTER THAN THAT. WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS ELECT.

Support was magnificent at brum - we can match that a west spam and watford........ easily

If you're in with one of the factions that make up Red Army and haven't been to the away games recently - then maybe ... just maybe that's why your pubs quiet ...

Finally it's was FANTASTIC yesterday ringing out from the NORTHAM + EAST STAND followed by ITCHEN
NORTH and the rest of the Stadium ..

As for some of the comments about NA yesterday was the first time since chappy got injured that he had more or less an injury free sqaud to select from and didnt Jos make a big difference. At what stage of the proceedings was this blatant breach of Ground Regulations carried out? Actually it is not the first time Elvis impersonators have appeared at a match, ask Carlisle. It is far from the first time a conga line has happened at a football match, pure quality? well maybe but for how much longer, your decent fans may well be be OK, but they are not having the best of times at the moment so any light relief is good for morale. GHK you are a master at falling out with absolutely everyone. What a lonely life you must live. Try being pleasant, it will pay dividends for you.
But you bring my name into proceedings at 1919hrs!!! Such a great win and joyous victory why leave the pub after an hour (game over 1450, by the time you get out of stadium/over bridge say 1710hrs) I spoke to enough fans today to get the jist and reality of where we are. It is far from the first time a conga line has happened at a football match, pure quality? well maybe but for how much longer, your decent fans may well be be OK, but they are not having the best of times at the moment so any light relief is good for morale. Thanks for knicking two points off of Blackpool.

Went to St Mary's with my mate and saw how well Saints perform and nearly brilliant defence, better than before.

Good game, but they could have scored more but it's good to have another clean sheet on our side.

Burnley had clean sheets for several matches in a row but it is first time they lost goals yesterday.

I guess Adkins will keep players and tactics as yesterday for the West ham match - that way we could return to top spot after Tuesday's match.

But still we could get caught by either Birmingham & Cardiff (despite their loss against the Foxes) if we lose our magic spell again.

Many thanks to Tony, one of Saints, safety officers at St Mary's for a grateful help to me and had high five whenever Saints scores.

COYR SAINTS!

Confucious says...
10:49am Sun 12 Feb 12

Considering the huge contrast between the ecstatic joy after yesterday's victory and the sheer despair that followed the last home defeat, I suddenly thought it's about time we got some proper proportion and perspective on things.

December 2012 is a unique for a whole cluster of Armageddon predictions - not just the Mayan calendar but Nostradamus too. And, on a more scientific note, there's an unimaginably rare and worrying alignment of the earth with the black hole at the galactic centre.

Think about it, after December we could be sheer timeless nothingness - and gone too will be all memory and record of the past and past generations and all the future prospects of generations to come.

Of course it may not happen, but the very thought of it puts all this passionate Saints stuff - and indeed Poopey bashing - into an entirely different and more sensible perspective.

So what should we make of it?

It means it's ABSOLUTELY IMPERATIVE that we get promoted THIS season and get at least a half season back in the Prem before time ends. Being around to witness Poopey's demise as well before we all go would also be a fitting bonus.

RedArmy1's call to step up the passion is well made. COYR.

One has to sit back and just marvel sometimes. We got a skate on here running down our gate yesterday which was double their average.
Yakking about their FA cup Final win against a lower division side. At least when we won it it was against the best and we were in a lower division, now that is class. And our cup final is one of the most famous in football, whilst pompeys is forgotten.

As for one or two Saints fans. Not even 3 seasons ago we were a dying club.
Cortese has done a great job, been and achieved more than we could hope for. Is strong focused and committed.
Adkins took us to automatic promotion, kept us in the top 2 through a devestating run of injuries recently. One or two of you want to get real. We have out achieved what we expected at the start of the season. Whether we make it or not this season, I am so proud of this club.
As for Cortese, lets get things straight, rather him than anyone else i can think of.
We have a fantastic squad, one of the cheapest in the Championship. Put together with craft.
The reason we do not spread the dosh as much as some think we should, is because by 2015 every club must be self financing. If they are not, they can be fined, have incoming transfer ban put on them and possibly even points deduction.
This is in relation to incoming money in relation to transfers and wages. It does not apply to construction and such. Which owners can help with.
Hence the 5 year plan

Bill - what's all this about 3-ticket deals including the last game of the season (glory hunter?)? I plan to do at least 4-trips to SMS before the end of the season...when does it start?
Not sure how to feel about the last couple of months...we have played Cardiff and Brum and not lost, so should feel quite happy. Leicester and Millwall didn't count for various reasons.
Just looking forward to the next few games, better results, and a new focus. Competition for places is strong. Puncheon back in the fold is like a new signing, Chaplow coming back will give him something to think about. Lallana is back to his best, Rickie looks an even better player at this level.
It's going to be a bumpy ride between now and May, but compared to some of the souths clubs I know which one I'm glad I follow. Not happy for the real fans east of God's City - we know what not having a club feel like. But just like for us there will be an eleventh hour saviour. Points deducted and relegation could beckon, and players won't fancy playing for free! Still normality soon to be resumed with Saints being the best supported club on the south coast.

I had a browse of the "Knees up Mother Brown" site. It was actually quite a pleasant read...the Irons were funny, and didn't spend time slagging each other off, or us. In fact, many of them will be attending the match with Saints fans who are friends, as they did at St Mary's. A lot of them are taking their "Doris" because its Valentine's Day. So one bloke said that instead of "You don't know what you're doing" chants, these will be replaced by shrill cries of "What's he doing now?"
My feeling is that they would love to win, but would be happy with a point. Me too. Five across the middle, Carlton Cole up front on his own (though they have just bought Maynard.) Who haven't they bought? Will Big Sam play the wild boy Morisson from Man Utd. as well as Maynard for debuts in this game against us? Doubt it. Come on You super Saints!!!

Superb game yesterday, at last we put in a performance to match our potential! It was entertaining from the first whistle to the last and certainly put a big smile on my face, I thought everyone put a good shift in and were up for it from the beginning. Nice to see Billy get a goal even if it was a soft one, he did seem somewhat embarrassed to claim it but they all count. AL was everywhere on the pitch, by the look of it back to his old self with RL right up there!

If we can replicate the same again Tuesday then there is every chance we can take 3 points from the game, it certainly important that we come away with something. With our squad and the few still to be 100% fit we have a team to be envied, and provided we concentrate on our own results and forget about others then there is no reason at all why we will not have automatic promotion!

Can't wait for next Saturday, it was getting to the point that away teams were looking forward to a trip to SMS. Now we can again return it to Fortress St'Mary's and play in front of an appreciative full house! COYR's FOP!

Saints average gate this season 25546 = 78.1% of total capacity
Pompey average gate this season 14533 = 70.2% of total capacity

it's all here http://stats.footbal

I completely forgot the other important stats
Saints 2nd 55 pts
Pompey 17th 35 pts (soon to be 25 pts)

Saints bank balance £Black
Pompey £Red oops

Pompey going down with no money in the bank?
Actually you are not in the black you are 10m in debt, find out the facts you dick
Ah, Pompey Syphillis. Nice of you to drop by, are you here because your own site is so depressing? Have to admit your team have fighting spirit what with all that is going on in Skateville, or are they just putting themselves in the preverbial shop window so to speak?

As for debts, you may find that our club is run in a way that we deliberately operate with a deficit to offset tax, you may find most successful businesses run in this way. As for yourselves, hows the whip round with the bucket going? I bet the charity collection tins are safely under lock and key, don't want any repetitions of last time would we? And the new ground? Perhaps you could ground share with the Leigh Park Ladies team, looks like you'll have to settle for playing Eastleigh as you're future rivals! :o) COYR's! FOP!

This slippery slope we're on is really great isn't it?
Oh and the money that we "owe" is the money that Markus (God bless him) paid out of his own back pocket.
Do we owe the tax man?..NO..Have the staff and players been paid...YES...Do we own St Marys...YES...Are we going into admin again?...NO....Are our attendances one of the best in the league home and away?...YES...Do we have the top scorer in the league..YES...Are we second in the league?...YES

Seedhouse you are true insperation and one of a minority who's word I will follow and agree with. You are so right in the above. Nigel is what we need yes he has had the odd hiccup not more than 2 that I can think of. Does no one really look at what we have had to deal with this season, Ref's and linesmen against us because we are Southampton, the team that alot of people don't like because we don't play dirty, we don't throw our toys out of the pram when things don't go right. We don't intimidate the linesmen or ref to get a decision to go our way....No we paly fair we deal with teams when they get dirty and in our face, we have the best supporting supporters both home and away and fingers crossed we will go up as Champions. I might not know alot about football compared to others on here as have only followed Saints (my first and only team) for 17 months, but our lads are real gentleman and Nigel, well what can I say, he has never slagged anyone off and is a true gentleman, always wears a suite to games, more than alot of managers can do and he and Nicola will fulfill Marcus's dream and ours. Can't wait for tuesday, yes its the 14th !!!!! but wouldn't want to be anywhere else than watching or listening to the game. It was a great game yesterday, had a croaky voice at the end of it as always, and made a few people laugh with my verbal antics, but thats what its all about.....Love you Saints, COYR's we are going up

OK it is your choice on Tuesday, Puncheon or Guly on the right? Think carefully taking in to considerartion all of the factors, the quality and style of the opposition, the fitness of the individual, who is better qualified to take on the might of West Ham. If your choice is the wrong one and it all goes pear shaped, you will have to take the blame.

As I started writing this the total entries were 180, so I figure if you take out the above collection, we'd be left with about 100 posts.

I don't think it's clever as a business to have obstructions when trying to sell to the public. When you have children lives are complicated, if St Marys was selling out week in week out I'd agree but it's not, just over 8000 fans midweek! Room for improvement I would say, even if you sold remaining seats for a £1 that would be £24000 that you wouldn't normally have, sharps weekly wage!

Your a pr1ck mate, Saints are selling a service. 8000 fans Tuesday, 24100 yesterday. Empty seats are an opportunity missed and it's been going on for months especially midweek games in tv. For the many televised games we've had they should of done some sort of promotion so it looks good on tv and viewers can sense the great atmosphere that makes them wish they were there.
And what is the point when your not selling tickets of putting these additional costs of parking, buying on telephone and on the day purchases? On this I am correct and those seats should be sold.

off set against that is the 12m paid by Arsenal for Oxo. Which has not been accounted for. The fact the estimated value of our players is double the written. That the staduim and training ground are now valued over double than their admin value. You will soon see Saints are not in debt. That the 9m includes the above possible liabilities.
iN FACT we are one of the most financially sound clubs in the country.
our loan is interest free and is a paper loan as it is given by our owners. So please worry about your club and not our Phil.

I do feel Saints could have sold £1.00 tickets for kids and reduced the prices of OAP's etc to try and get more people in St Marys against Millwall.
I'm an ST holder and paid £18.00 for my ticket which I fell isn't to bad.
The weather and the fact that it was only Millwall ( no disrespect to them intended) on the night put many people off going and the demise of the FA Cup has and will continue to affect the gates at all grounds around the country which is a shame.
I think at best even if they did lower the prices we would have been hard pushed to get over 12,000 which is more than some Premier clubs would get as was the 8,500 that we got.
The game has gone and now we need to try and fill St Marys for the remaining home league games which is now paramount.
Our away support is still one of if the best in the league so no problems there.
Maybe if we all started to get along rather than squabbling with each other it might spread the upbeat and positive optimism that has now returned and more people will turn up and fortify the twelfth man mentality we need to get us to the finish line.
Destiny is still in our hands and we can help by continuing to support the team which is now at full strength again and looked more like the team that put the amazing run of results together during in the first three months of the campaign.
The winter wobble has been steadied and our team is now ready to play it's football in the warmer conditions which will soon be with us.
We are where we are because we are one of the best teams in this division and on it's day the best by a country mile as many other managers have already stated.
A win at West Ham is possible and we should let them worry about us and not vice verse.
We were in league one this time last year and are doing better than a lot of us expected if we are all honest.

Disgraceful.

I blame GHK, the selfish cheapskate. If, on match days, he'd load his car up at home and bring all his family, then park in the SMS car park, our attendances would increase by 4 each match. Therefore, we'd make an extra few quid at the gate and another twenty quid through the car park.

Football matters......
Saints won Saturday against one of the teams it was predicted we would struggle against. 2 - 0 and we didn't look like losing at any time and the Burnley manager said the best team won.
The Saints manager praised every one and felt there was positivity everywhere, and was looking forward to WHU.
So are most loyal Saints fans who hope for another win to go top.
Nobody was willing to predict what the attendance would be at The Station, sorry Upton Park , that is where the game is going to be played.
Not in some pub before or after the game.

Can't wait for Tuesday so we can talk about football and not deride each other on this site. Although some of this playfull banter, it can get a little old. As a club, and I include "all" supporters in this, we need to embrace all those who either buy tickets or - like me - offer support from afar. I predicted a 3-0 win and Sharp to score. I came close. I will predict a hard-fought battle with few chances, but ultimately, we will be top of the league again if not by Tuesday, then soon thereafter. Saints will get a point and a moral victory.

Adam Lallana has 8 , Ricky 16, Guly 10, and Billy has 1 for us already.
League goals.
Not really a fair fight is it?

Gave the French a tough time, too; especially in Canada.

Note, however, he's General James Wolfe (with an E at the end).

Great idea, though.

I might do something similar, using Spike Milligan. Anyone remember him putting Skateville into Room 101? It's worth watching:

About the Echo bashing that's gone on recently here. Since when has it been the Echo's - or any other paper for that matter - to be a cheerleader for SFC? If you want meaningless, tub-thumping drivel, just look at the club website for bland platitudes. And BTW, that goes for almost every other club site. What we need is proper, independent analysis from the Echo - but that's not going to happen while this ridiculous feud between the club and the paper goes on. Heads need to be knocked together. Shoot me down if you want to, but don't shoot the Echo down - the club ain't talking to them. I have no connection to the Echo, but I'm looking for some meaningful reporting other than gooning pics of fans in the paper. Sort it it out Cortese and Echo.

Agreed, I actually think he could cut it in the Prem as well.

Holt is an out and out striker and puts the ball in the net well. For me, Rickie has added a few more dimensions to his game this season. His ability to trap a ball, turn and lay on a pass has amazed me (yesterday's performance was a good example). He's nailed on for the championship golden boot..as Jos tweets "feedthebearandhewil
lscore"...I like that! :O)

so he's not an out and out striker because he does so much more ...... yet he still tops the leading scorer table by a distance ......... we have ourselves an absolute gem !..... what a player !!!

I think Frazer Richardson is developing into my fav player.. solid, gets back well but always ready to receive Guly's corner ball and get the cross into the box. Good man and only RB in the squad while Butters is injured.

Chappers for me too, but that's probably because I think he has stepped up his game so much. Rickie is a very close second, golden boot and the prem await!

Agree with that, he's getting better in each game. Lambert is also turning into a complete player and brings others especially Lallana into play.
You can definately see Lallana is match fit again and the team is so much more balanced now all the first team players are back in the side

GHK you have told us how incompetent Nigel is as a football manager and shared your wisdom on what you would do to turn our awful league position around. GHK. In all the excitment you missed my question. What exactly do you do for a living?
