Adkins: Squad is ready for title charge

Nigel Adkins Nigel Adkins

NIGEL Adkins believes his Saints squad is looking strong ahead of their final 16 matches.

A host of key stars have been welcomed back in recent weeks and the manager was able to select from an almost fully-fit group at the weekend.

The result was a comfortable 2-0 victory over Burnley that has boosted confidence for the rest of the promotion push.

Adkins believes Saints are now well-set for the last two-and-a-half months of the campaign.

“Obviously, players are now all fit and available and fighting for positions,” he said.

“The unity among the players is there for all to see. It’s not just about 11, it’s about the whole group.

“They all want to be in that starting 11 now, but we have got a strong squad.

“We’ve now arrived at the latter stages of the campaign, and I believe we’re very strong as a unit in mentality, and strong with the players we’ve got, to deal with the situations that will arise with playing every three or four days now.”

If we play against West Ham like we played against Burnley then the three points are there for the taking.

Lets get back up where we belong.

Whilst not wishing to see Pompey fold and not finish the season with the results of matches played declared null and void, it is worth noting that WHU would lose 6 points and Saints only 1.

Guly is not Chaplow. He had a great game, he was obvilously given a job to do which he stuck to. People need to get of his back. You would have though that Saints fans would know that you dont have to charge around kicking people in teh air to be a good player.

A five point gain over West Ham or Poopey going bust?

I wonder, if we gave Saints fans this choice in a referendum, would it be a really close call?

Nigel had a full strength side available to him and played Guly in his best position. He teamed up well with Richardson and the team looked really balanced. With our frightening front line being watched more closely by defenders, predict more goals from our midfielders, including Guly. Nigel's got it spot on. ONWARDS and UPWARDS!

I'm baffled by the negativity towards Guly. I thought he did it exactly right, held position, worked back when required and took 1 or 2 of them to mark him and stay close whenever he had the ball.

Based on his goals to date an easy choice ahead of Puncheon, Holmes and Barnard.

I also think in Chung we may have bagged a real surprise package:-)

Brilliant days to be a Saint Supporter.

Tomorrow is a big match. Everyone knows that. If we play as well as we know we can we should win tomorrow night. We have a fully fit squad. We have new players vying for selection, plus established players regaining their composure and match fitness. West Ham have big guys at the back to challenge Ricky but that didnt stop us beating them at St Marys. We have also regained our passing game as seen against Burnley, and regained our strength in defence.

West Ham are more worried about this game than we are. They are erratic and they simply do not have the depth of quality in their squad that we have.

I think we will win 1-0 and I restate my prediction that we will get automatic promotion with three games to spare. Sixteen matches left and I think we will win eleven of them. Maybe more.

Rubbish. Been to many matches steve? He's always in the thick of the action, frequently moving past as many as two or three players before either passing, shooting or losing the ball (usually taking on one too many). If you're looking for someone who gives as soon as he gets, try putting your player cam on Danny Fox.

Portsmouth Football Club are set to enter administration.

The club were issued with a winding-up petition by HM Revenue and Customs on 3 January and were due to appear at the Royal Courts of Justice on 20 February.

Pompey would face a 10-point deduction from the Football League which would leave them 21st in the Championship.

Peter Kubik, from the club's financial advisors UHY Hacker Young, said: "They are in the process of seeking an administration order."

Kubik added: "An application to court seeking administration is due to go in any day.

"The club's bank accounts have been frozen due to the winding-up hearing and they are finding it very difficult to trade. Once the administration order is in place the bank accounts will be made accessible again.

"We are aware that administration carries an automatic 10-point deduction by the Football League."

Maybe more.

Sixteen matches. This Championship is ours to win.
Totally agree, we believe that with Kevin Nolan their captain and playmaker banned, big Sam will go for a draw, that being the case we need to get an early goal as we did against Burnley the game will really open up and we will outplay them, West Ham have won a great deal of their games by 1-0 or the odd goal they score and try to shut up shop, kevin Nolan must be one of their top goalscorers so they will really miss him in their team, West Ham are there for the taking. Lets get back to the top and stay there!!!

No because he doesn't.
Osprey - did you watch the Pompey game? I seem to remember Guly backing out of a header at the far post allowing them to equalise and denying us a win on enemy turf.
Give it a rest, that is history and the pros and cons have been gone over and over, nothing can change it. Move on and just because Puncheon and Guly have better sun tans than you it is not a reason to pick on them.
This.
Spot on.
Aint that the truth,we've been glad of some of Guly's goals this season
Is this the same guly who got taken off, before he got himself sent off against millwall for two or three late tackles.got booked for one so adkins got him off didn't look like he was backing out of those.besides he aint that sort of player but he looked good saturday back in midfield.

Really didn't mean to be as negative as most of you thought! He's quality, scoring and assisting wise, was just asking if anyone thinks he just backs off a bit in the 50/50's, and he did play great at the weekend against burnley, I prefer him to puncheon too! Didn't mean to come across so negative so I apologies! Massive game tomorrow night, told the misses I'll have to have the live updates on my phone whilst we're at a restaurant! COYR!!

Can't remember of whom he said it but "couldn't trap a bag of cement" & " he can trap a ball further than I can pass it" are two of Cloughie's pearls of wisdom too.
"he can trap a ball further than i can kick it" was jimmy greaves on mark hately ........... as was "a classic case of the sh1t hitting the fan" ........ on cloughie slapping a pitch invader ...... happy days !

where he wrote Football for occupation and Anfield for the address.

"Sir, said the receptionist, you need to fill in where you live.
"Lady", he replied, "in Liverpool there is only one address that matters and that is where I live.".

Shankly on boardroom meetings - 'At a football club, there's a holy trinity - the players, the manager and the supporters. Directors don't come into it. They are only there to sign the cheques.'

It's old manager quotation central on here tonight!

Here's another one to ponder;

Ian Branfoot, 1992; "Matty -- you're dropped".

Shankly, Clough, Branfoot - 3 names that don't go together.......
