Rivals' wins make it tight for Saints at the top of the Championship table

SAINTS cannot afford to take their foot off the gas in their chase for Premier League promotion after their rivals turned up the pressure on them yet again.

Nigel Adkins, pictured, saw his side knocked back down to second place in the Championship last night as West Ham secured a thumping 4-1 win at Blackpool – and that despite having to play midfielder Henri Lansbury in goal for 35 minutes after Robert Green’s second half sending off.

Blackpool’s defeat was the only crumb of comfort that could be salvaged from the midweek results on a night where other results also intensified the heat on Saints ahead of their trip to Watford at the weekend.

Birmingham extended their unbeaten streak to 15 matches with a 3-1 win at Barnsley and Middlesbrough crept back into the automatic promotion places at Blackpool’s expense after a 3-1 win at Millwall.

All but one of the teams around Saints have games in hand which means the table could look even tighter in a few weeks from now.

there will still be plenty of twists and turns going to happen in the championship before the end of the season.

It's very tight but it's still ours for the taking. We have a strong squad and are the best team, playing the best football. I expect us to win at least 8 of the last 14 games. Starting at Watford. That is a game we SHOULD win.. we all know that ... but then again a draw would be fine as the target is 83 points and that would keep us on track .. just.

It reminds me of that scene in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid when they just can't shake off the posse that's tracking them doggedly. I can see Nigel and Nicola lying on a ridge this morning and looking back...

We need to end the season with some good away wins, starting on saturday. I've got a feeling that 83 points wont be enough this season.

83 points WILL do it. There may be a large pack behind us now right now but that will dwindle down by the end of March. I think West Ham are likely to be alongside us until the end.

As long as we keep winning (when we should) the only teams likely to be within touching distance are Cardiff, maybe Birmingham and Blackpool .. I think Reading and Middlesborough will fade. But Football is not that easy to predict.

What I am certain of is that we have the best team, probably the best run-in fixture wise. .and of course we play the best football.

If you need a reminder just take a look at the Squad list on the BBC website. IMPRESSIVE !!!There isn't a team in this league that doesn't envy that pool of talent.

I suppose the difference between us and Blackpool was highlighted for all to see, after last night's result.
Both times WHU go down to 10 men, yet only one team could get through their dogged defence. And all credit to the irons for being unbeaten in 3 matches when only having 10 men on the pitch.
It seems Ollie's army didn't even trouble the make shift goalie, Henri Lansbury.
In fact I heard a comment, after the game, that Wet Spam could have put Angela Lansbury in goal, and still not conceded.

Is that not a few games off? Things could potentially change a bit before then. It'd be a hard call to make at the moment because Birmingham would then drop out of the challenge, but Reading would still be there. I think the only thing that saints lack for the run in is that premier league experience in the team, a couple of old heads in the middle of the park barking orders, it would be invaluable if we had this. Some of the teams around us have that experience, it helps alot especially with away games where our record doesnt seem to be as good as the teams around us, that is my one concern.

Was thinking the same, but wouldn't agree with it. A hefty fine, yes, but to dock points would forever leave a bad taste if it made the difference in where they were to finish. BHA could, of course, fall into the same trap.

I caught the commentary for your match on Saturday, and the recovery looks to be just about complete.

(I accept that a number of you aren't concerned with what other clubs are doing).
There is always a dillemma about what result would be most favourable, and I was surprised at some favouring a Blackpool win for last night.
Westham still have to play the four sides occupying the play-off places, plus those directly below, so surely it is to Saints advantage for them to win all those matches.
This would help to keep the pack at a distance, and as long as you take care of business, a top two position is more likely.
This has got to be better than leading the division by a short margin, with the pack, (including Westham), snapping at your heels.
It would also generate a separate contest with Westham for the title.
I am hoping for plenty of draws involving the chasing pack.
Not tonight though!

I feel better when you predict a loss as we normally win, give Percy a treat!
Watford play their new goalie from united, the hammers will be without theirs for 3 games. Watford is the kind of games we should be winning as they're bottom part of league. Birmingham and reading are threatening but it's still in our hands and we can keep pressure on the hammers. No panic and draw won't be too bad, a loss however would be negative. Not a must win but mustn't lose!
Percy gone quite but me Budgie is flapping about saying watch that nippy Watford we are about to be found out again away!

0 0 was the best result for us I am thinking, Mr Carl Berry can't have read the bit in the script where Brighton are gifted a last minute winner!

Promotion will require the players to show more resilence and guile away from home. NA has done his job and he needs the players to perform away.

There is nothing lucky about these late goals, OSPREYSAINT.
We grind teams down by passing the ball and tiring the opposition out, so we know we are going to get chances towards the end.
It didn't quite happen today, and I wouldn't feel comfortable about Carl Berry knocking one in for us :)

we must get automatic promotion, because we deserve it, and we should win the league as we are clearly the best team in the league.

I look back a couple of years, and I am so proud of how far and how well the lads and management have done.

5 year plan?? A bbc journalist implied it couldnt and wouldnt be done a couple of years ago. Everyone dismissed it. Most people were laughing. Well guess what? Nobody's laughing now because all bets are off on us doing it in three. Yes it might not happen. But we're on the home straight, the last 100 metres of a marathon and when you're that close to the end, and you're that close to winning and when you're as quick as us you don't let up.

We'll finish the league as an automatically promoged side, and we'll finish as champions.

Believe it...

The Saints are coming.

(Wearily) ...no, not all bets are off there is still a way to go yet. Saints cannot do the 5-year plan in three, as you suggest: this IS the third year!

Absolutely Birmingham are the team to fear. A Saints loss on Saturday and a Birmingham win puts Birmingham in the driving seat.

batesie, we are still in the third year so the "plan" can still be completed within three years as the mission started in August 2010

"Nobody's laughing now."

Very true.

It reminds me of comedian, Bob Monkhouse when he said: 'They laughed when I told them that I wanted to be a comedian. Well, they're not laughing now.'

This is a great opportunity in a very competitive league. We can do it but, like last year, there will be plenty of teams doing everything possible to eke out more points than us.

Squeaky bums indeed.
