Portsmouth Football Club makes staff redundant

Fratton Park Fratton Park

PORTSMOUTH Football Club has today made a number of staff redundant.

More have been asked to defer their wages or to go part time.

The playing staff - with one player earning more than £30,000 per week - are not affected by the cuts due to the Football Creditors rule.

The administrator, Trevor Birch, has described the club as having a 'Premier League cost base' despite only having a 'Championship income'.

Chief executive David Lampitt has left the club, as have the other directors.

A statement from Mr Birch, Partner at PKF Accountants & Business advisers was published on the club's website, the full text of which is below.

“We have had no choice but to take the difficult decision to make a number of redundancies across all levels and departments within Portsmouth Football Club.

“Additionally, we are asking certain employees to defer wages on an ongoing basis and are asking several members of staff to move from a full-time to a part-time role.

“These measures are painful for everyone involved with the club, but they are essential for Portsmouth’s survival, which is our main objective.

“They are in no way a reflection of the performance of the club’s hard-working staff, who have remained loyal and supportive throughout this difficult time.

“Our initial analysis of the club’s financial position has revealed that the situation is more serious than many people had expected.

“We have been brought in to try to rescue a business with significant financial problems. To put it bluntly, Portsmouth Football Club has a Premier League cost base but only Championship income. This is not a sustainable situation and one that needs to be addressed urgently if the club is to continue to exist.

“As things stand, there is a serious risk that the club could run out of cash within the next couple of months. I recognise that this is not the news that anyone wants to hear but burying our heads in the sand will not help anyone.

“Today’s redundancies will make a difference to the club’s financial position but there are sure to be further challenges ahead of us.

“Portsmouth’s survival depends on us being able to find a buyer for the club before the money runs out.

“This is a great club with a proud history. We will continue to do all we can to secure a long-term future for Portsmouth Football Club. I hope that with the support of the staff, players, supporters and the wider community we can achieve this aim.

“Portsmouth needs the support of as many people as possible over the next few weeks and months. There are six home games coming up in the next five weeks so let’s make every single one a sell out – starting with Leeds on Saturday.

“With this in mind, we have already started speaking to the supporters’ groups and are meeting with fans tonight.”

As a Leeds fan I have a great deal of sympathy for the suffering Pompey fans. The club have been used as a cash cow by dodgy former owners. When all the dust has settled the fans will still be there. Good luck to them after this coming saturday

Sell out their ground ?? If they could do that evey week they may not have got into such a mess. But, we all know they are not capable of doing do. Their so-called "Best fans in the country" are just a bunch of good-time Charlie's who disappear when the going gets tough. Even when we were in Div 1 we managed several 32000 crowds. I know I am on my own here as I now reside in Southampton so not expecting the saints fans to agree with me. I don't have any interest in your rivalry which is why I said what I said. You are lucky that you landed on your feet with a rich benefactor there for the grace of god and all that MOT

It is not just at Portsmouth that 'Good-time Charlies' when the going gets tough. When Rupert Lowe was in charge at St Mary's, there were many times when there were more empty seats than there were ones with a backside on. The excuses given by self-professed 'dedicated Saints' fans' were numerous. 'Not going to watch until Lowe is out' being a favourite excuse given. It was just the die-hards that made the club attractive enough to Herr Liebherr to consider investment.

Even now that the good times are here again, only 6,541 tuirned up when Torquay visited in the League Cup, and only 7,414 when PNE visited in the same competition. OK. So the league Cup is not the most attractive competition, but the FA Cup is, and only 8,493 showed up for the Millwall game.

If Saints find themselves in the Premier League next season, and are finding that the going is tough. I wonder how many 'Good-time Charlies' will be conspicuous by their absence then.

So all you so called Football fans think it's okay for one player to get £30,000 a week from a team in the bottom three of the Championship?
I don't give a hoots what, where they come from but why lay of workers on say £17,000 a year when your paying so called premier players that ludicrous amount?
How much a week was LeTissier on?I don't think it was anything like that amount.
for all the good he's doing the club they could sell him(if someone agreed with his wages) & buy in a player who would work his socks off to avoid relegation for a lot less than that.
It's okay having friendly banter amongst rivals but are you all telling me if an absolute beauty walked in & started talking to you & told you she came from Pompey you would walk away from her?
I use to go to Southsea for it's Disco's & would quite happily go out with a Pompey lady.I also had a friend who came back up to Southamton so sorry if this is Football where you cheer about people losing their jobs whilst others are on super dooper pay then thank Christ I love Rugby

I will laugh when they relegated and to be honest, I think any employee who stayed after their last debacle of administration may have needed their head examining.

I extend to them the same sympathy their supporters extended to the employees of our great club at the time of administration.

Going into administration once is hard luck, twice is mis-management, but 3 times is stupidity.

The sad excuse for a club needs to go bust as a lesson to all that you cannot cheat your way to success.

Liverpool should have gone under, that would really have shown the cracks under the wallpaper.

Ms Balloney, I was going to the Dell when Saints were in Div II (S) and Bill Dogin was manager, so I do not need any cr@p from kiddies like yourself.

I was pointing out that EVERY club has it's 'Good-time Charlies' and that calling someone names does not alter that fact.

In defence on the Lino, when Saints are promoted I do not expect to see any spare seats at SMS when Man U, Man C, The Scousers or Spurs come a calling, a shame the same couldn't be said when Hartlepool come a calling on a Tuesday when we were in league one.

Fairweather or good Charlies call them what you will but they are there ready and waiting for the big time.

It's not right when people lose their jobs because of mismanagement from above - I was one of 250 people made redundant from Capita in Salisbury three years ago for the same reason. Even as a Saints fan, I wouldn't even wish it upon the Skates.

I think it's got to the stage where the best thing for them is to end this farce once and for all - let PFC go under and create a pheonix club that the real fans (and maybe those who've lost their jobs) could contribute to and be proud of, rather than the club repeating the same embarrassing mistakes over again.

Does affiliation with Saints mean that I have to enter my post twice and end it with Skate alert?

People of my vintage come from a time when there was rivalry but not riots.

Competition without confrontation.

Although Toomers supplied Saints' kit, there was no shirt sponsorship.

When I went to school, computers were unheard of and it was just the girls that were taught to type. Sometimes I make a typing error and from that you come to the conclusion that I am something that I am not.

I guess that is what is called, 'Woman's logic.'

That certainly does appear to be the case with Portsmouth.

When Southampton had their problems, it was not money-laundering but a case of people using the club as a status symbol.

Although they had success in their own business field, they had no comprehension of how to run a football club. There is more to it than the Chairman turning up at the training ground in a club track-suit.

when I hanged around with the group of mates I did back then I was a footie fan ( mistaken believe this would prove I was one of them) I cheered when Ron head butted ( clashed heads) with a Pompey player but since those days of spending a fortune on going all over the country supporting the saints I woke up joint the TA & realised I was only doing this( watching Saints) to keep so called friends I actually preferred to watch & play Rugby I met a lot of good people from Pompey.played against them worked alongside them in the TA & so I can say quite honestly I can't believe you as fans can't see that people being made redundant(sacked) whilst a player in a struggling team is paid £30,000 a week this after one month would pay at least four peoples wages for the year I find this totally disgusting & I can't believe you footie fans aren't saying it's wrong instead your just saying ant Pompey cr+p Yes they had idiots who were cheering when Saints were in trouble but how did you feel what did you think of them?

Just shows how it is so badly run. Most Premiership clubs put a clause in players contracts that says they take a 50% pay cut if they are relegated. Saints had it and I believe most lower Premiership clubs have it . To save these 33 redundancies you would think some of these higher wage earners would have taken a pay cut.

Agree.
And the manager who led them on this path to financial suicide - step forward- Harry 'I've never been relegated' Rednapp.
Now let me think.............. he did such a good job that the FA could put him in charge of the England team!!!

Well they kind of have, they havent been paid for quite a while, makes me sick though is that they have just loaned a player from wba but it is wba who will pay his wages, I say if you can't run as a club you should dissapear and let a more wothwhile/better run club take your place

Surely some one(manager) knows you need fighters in a relegation battle not well paid Prima Donnas?
Look at Saints! how many so called loyal players got up & ran when they were fighting for survival?
( league status) these Prima Donnas know they can just jump ship so are absolutely no good to you now. They cost a fortune & you can't afford them ! get rid & get some fighters ( on lower pay)

This is not a time for jokes for or hatred.

I must agree with many posts that there are players at Pompey earning more in a week than some of the staff earn in a year.

A real shame for the families concerned.
