Southampton looking for only second win at Vicarage Road in 91 years

SAINTS head to Watford tomorrow aiming to improve on a truly appalling record at Vicarage Road.

Nigel Adkins’ men could really do with a victory as fellow automatic promotion rivals West Ham and Birmingham both have home games.

But Saints head to Herfordshire looking for only their second ever win at Vicarage Road in 91 years!

Watford’s home stadium is one of the club’s biggest bogey grounds.

In twenty league and cup visits, Saints have lost 12 and drawn seven.

Their only ever victory came in March 1988 when defender Kevin Moore’s goal gave Chris Nicholl’s side victory.

Japanese international striker Tadanari Lee could be handed his first Saints league start tomorrow.

He replaced Billy Sharp against Derby at St Mary’s last weekend, and scored his first Championship goal for the club.

Now he will be hoping that has won him a place alongside Rickie Lambert as Saints look to keep the pressure on leaders West Ham.

They will certainly be looking to avoid some of the embarrassing results that have characterised recent visits to Vicarage Road.

Saints were thumped 5-2 by their lower division hosts in a League Cup tie during Steve Wigley’s miserable time in charge in 2004, while they were beaten 3-2 during Watford’s Premiership relegation season of 1999/2000.

Saints were also thumped 3-0 there in George Burley’s first game in charge on Boxing Day 2005.

But the biggest humiliation came in September 1980 when Watford, then in the second tier, humbled top flight Saints 7-1 in an amazing League Cup second round second leg tie.

Lawrie McMenemy’s men had won the first leg 4-0 at The Dell, but were stunned by Graham Taylor’s Hornets a week later.

Watford had won six successive league and cup games against Saints prior to their visit to St Mary’s earlier this season.

But Saints ended that particular run with a 4-0 romp, Lambert converting two penalties before Guly and Lee Homes completed the rout.

I'm surprised the Echo in its weekly search for worrying pre-match 'bogeys' hasn't troubled us with the fact that in our entire history we have never won a match with a 3.00pm kick off on a 25 February against a team with a name beginning with W. But...

I've worked out that Nigel's tactical aptitude is just over 1309 times better than mine. Nonetheless, I hope he puts Bart on the subs bench tomorrow because it makes me very uncomfortable having no cover for Kelvin. Appreciate Nigel's point about 'being positive' and, after all, how often do goalies get taken off or sent off? But if I was Kelvin I might think twice before making a 'brave' challenge - or hesitate too long before choosing to make a challenge that could risk a sending off.
No doubt Nigel weighs up the odds and no doubt his policy with risk taking is that 'the higher they get, the fewer' should be taken. But no goalie sub is just one too many for my squeaky bum.

Still, we're rubbish at actuarial calculations in my family. My Uncle Herbie, took out a whopping £200,000 worth of life insurance and it didn't do him a jot of good because he died anyway.

It's history. We live in the present !! It's just a football ground, they are just another team.

We however are surfing on a tsunami of awesome talent, goals and quality football. We will win tomorrow by a convincing margin and send out a message that a certain London Club should get out of our top spot. It is OUR top spot and there are trespassers !! They will be evicted over the next four fixtures ..... and we will fly so high we will reach the sky ... and unlike West Ham we will stay there ....

Poetic, apart from the rhyming, the iambic pentameter and the plagiarism.

I bet the Echo wish I worked for them...

The last time i was at watford we lost. They say lightning dont strike twice, i shall be there tomorrow so the least we will get is a draw. But i've a feeling we are going to WIN.
We will need at least nine wins or wins and draws to gain the points to be promoted . Our home games look quite a safe bet so it's games like tomorrows that points need to be gained. Three tomorrow will be very welcome. C O Y REDSSSSSSS.

Blimey that is a large bogey. That League cup turnaround still hurts, I seem to remember Tranmere also did us in a similar way.

I know that this is off thread, but there is something I need to get off my chest regarding that ludicrous so-called club down the road, and their attempts to sign players on loan...

The one thing that I couldn't understand when Voldemort was banging on the other day about only being able to field nine fit players was "ok, what about the reserves/kids?"

Then some enlightened soul informed me that if a player from reserve set up plays in a few games they are regarded as part of the squad.

Well that should be a problem should it? Theses guys would be on next to no money, so what is the problem?

The only reason for not playing them is that this would enlarge the squad, which would then mean that the league would be less prepared to allow Pompey to bring in MORE players on loan!

What on earth are they thinking. I hate to see any club in this situation - even Portsmouth - but I'm sorry; if this is the attitude of the club, then they deserve what they get. Ben-Haim is reportedly on £36,000 a week!

I hate to say it but the money men involved deserve to loose every penny-have the club liquidated, and let it be re-born as an unblemished club, run by people who would have the best interests at heart. Lets face it, Pompey have no assets, so they wouldn't be loosing much. It's about time one of these fat-Cat clubs that spend millions chasing the dream only to loose it all, goes out of business - if only as a warning to the others. Its only a matter of time.
