Lambert: I'll be disappointed if I don't hit 30 league goals

Daily Echo: RICKIE LAMBERT RICKIE LAMBERT

RICKIE Lambert has revealed he will be “disappointed” if he doesn’t hit 30 Championship goals in his first ever season at that level.

The phenomenal Saints striker took his league tally to 26 with both goals in the 2-0 win at Crystal Palace yesterday.

Due to his cup strikes, Lambert has now reached the 30-goal milestone in all competitions for the second time in his extraordinary three-season Saints career.

In his debut term of 2009/10, Lambert belted 36 goals – of which 30 came in League One.

Now he is adamant he wants to repeat that feat at the level above.

“I know I’ve never set targets, but if I don’t get 30 in the league then I’ll be disappointed,” he said.

I think our forward line will be ok next season, RL and BS up front with Lee on the bench, but we really lack a proper attacking central midfielder, AL cannot do the left hand side and central positions, he needs some help. On the right, we need a bit of quality, Do Prado, well, it just shows that without him in the side we perform much better, nuff said on that one. And i think a top quality keeper, maybe Henderson from wolves?

I have a feeling Lambo will get his bag of 30 for the season. wittless lines is clueless. Lambo will score goals at all levels and now Billy is settling in we have the makings of a good striker partnerhip.
Look at Grant Holt at Norwich like Lambo he has come up through the leagues. Although he his half the player Lambo is.
We need to keep our feet on the ground and keep focused on the task of getting to the Premier Division. That includes the idiots who ran on to the pitch last Saturday after Sharp scored the second goal and the Ref added on extra time.
Those fans cost us two points on Saturday.
To all fans wait until the game is finished before your celebrations go into full swing.

Compare and contrast how we feel now with how we felt a couple of years ago, and cast your eyes down the M27.. They have definately cross the white'line's to League One!

Our bright and glowing success may be casting a dark shadow down the M27 so there could be an explanation for this natural phenomenon.

Many creatures which operate in the dark, particularly insects such as moths, are always attracted to light, particularly when startled or in fear. It's thought that this is because moving instinctively up toward the sky is a safer option than moving down toward the ground.

It can be irritating when they flutter round your light, but if ignored they do eventually go away.

Since when have Wolves had a keeper called Henderson ? Or do you mean Hennessy ? I heard Kevin Doyle has been linked with us ( not really the time of player we need ) Look at Norwich & Swansea didn't add many players from the premiership at all & have suprised everyone............
Now look at QPR who bought players with experince of the league anyone care to tell me where they are ? Wouldn't mind seeing Jordan Rhodes Or Jay Rodriguez come to sms,Still need another CB IMO Maariappa could be ideal for us,In the centre of the park,Adam Clayton would be ideal,As for a keeper we are better off looking abroad could end up with someone like Vorm ! Just 3?? And the rest!

Lambert, Lee, Lallana, Puncheon and Chaplow are the only prem quality players we have IMO. Our defence will struggle if we don't get 2 new full-backs. From what I've seen Jos and Fonte make too many mistakes, if they can improve in the summer maybe they'll do ok.

And the rest? Were you one of the people bleating about a buying a full squad last summer too, and we are top of the table with the same basic squad. I even remember reading some saying that RL is unproven at this level and wont cut it.
No way will Nicola sanction buying half a team this summer.

It would be another excellent milestone if he gets 30 in the league, but at the end of the day, all that matters at this point is getting the last few points we need to guarantee promotion. Obviously, would love to win the whole thing, but I wouldn't cry into my beer if we came second. What we need is to keep focussed for the next 4 games, then when we achieve what we are targeting, we should have a calm, sensible approach to squad strengthening for the premier league. We will need, as a few have pointed out on other threads, a bit more in defence and centre midfield, and although Rickie, Billy and Tadanari up front are strong, one more goalscorer ( as it will be a long/tough campaign with injuries etc a factor) won't hurt us.

Agree with this - this team has fought their way through 2 divisions and if we go up they on the whole deserve a shot at the Prem - There will be players that we need to move on for the sake of their careers too as they will not get game time in the prem but the core we should keep - add 3/4 decent additions, let others go that are surplus to requirements and have a crack at the prem next season with the lads who have done us so proud over the last couple of years.
Lets just get to the prem then we can all relax and look forward to what is to come! 2 wins and counting required - COYRAWM!!

We will have to move on at least 8 players or so, every player we move on allows a better player in, move 8 or more and could get 4-5 much better players. I would try and get value from the league we are in. Need 1 striker, 2 attacking midfielders with pace, 1 tough tackling defensive midfielder, left back to replace Harding and Goalkeeper. Davies has been good, not sure if he is good enough for the prem, either way would need a good reserve.

when the game was over the training staff forced him to go back on the pitch to say thanks to the fans (he did not want to do it) i think his days are numbered. sorry to all guly followers and guly haters but this did not look good. come on guly sort out what ever problems you have we are together as on.
Guly's game can be infuriating at times but IMO he's been a player who is playing for the team. He's a central attacking midfielder and so far, that's the only position he hasn't played yet: he's not a striker and he's not a winger.

His main issue is that he gets very frustrated (either with himself or with other players) very easily, and then his game goes down. And I agree that he needs to sort that out.

Yesterday at Palace, he was venting in the end with BS. They had a chance at doing a fast 1-2 which would put Guly in front of the goal but BS held the ball, went a few steps away from the goal and tried a shot that went wide.

We have two players who can play in attacking central midfield: Guly and Puncheon. Let them roam free behind the striker (and I mean one striker), feeding balls to the wingers and/or strikers, and making runs through channels. We're missing this sort of player and IMO, this is why sometimes we can't break down teams that park the bus at their end.

Why do you fell the need to rip the squad to pieces rather than build on what we already have? Doesn't sound like a strategy for success to me.

But our whole season has been built on playing two holding players in central midfield. Any two from Cork, Hammond and Spiderman.

They all break up play and then get us moving forward, sideways or backwards, (tackle, intercept and pass). They are the continuity players who are essential to our strategy of retaining possession of the football.

Guly and Puncheon behind one striker don't fit into that pattern. If we adopted that approach our possession percentage would drop and our defence would be under pressure from counter attacks, plus we would only have one striker to put the ball in the net.

Guly and Puncheon don't play continuity football or chase back enough or close down enough to allow us to play like that. we would be vulnerable down the lines from the opposing full backs and wide mid fielders.

After all we are top of the league with central mid fielders who don't get forward very much and score goals. A number of teams play like that in the prem and hopefully that is where we are going.

None of your players will hit 10 goals this season and that's in the Championship.
You've been in the bottom 3 since Christmas...in the Championship.
All of your better players will be gone in the summer and when you drop down to league one you'll be hit with another points deduction as you'll still be in administration.
Then when you continue to cheat (which you probably will as it seems to be second nature for you now) you'll be wound up and gone for good.

We are keeping most of the squad together but those listed are not good enough or else they would be playing. There is no place in football for sentiment (apart from Le God) Must build but we cannot have a squad of fifty so lets so goodbye and good luck

did anyone that went yesterday notice that guly looked disintrested in the kick about before the game and when he came on he had a go at everyone on the pitch.
when the game was over the training staff forced him to go back on the pitch to say thanks to the fans (he did not want to do it) i think his days are numbered. sorry to all guly followers and guly haters but this did not look good. come on guly sort out what ever problems you have we are together as on.

We'd still have two holding midfields in that formation. And I guess wingers (and here I mean AL) would start scoring more than they do now. We still need a good right winger.

Centrebacks love to mark two strikers. If you give them only one, specially if he drops down the line from time to time, they just don't know what to do.

But hey, what isn't broken, don't fix it. If we are winning with the formation we have used so far, let's keep it.

Why do you fell the need to rip the squad to pieces rather than build on what we already have? Doesn't sound like a strategy for success to me.
At the very least, why don't we just enjoy promotion with the team that got it for us before we start dismantling the team.
It’s not about dismantling, it’s just my opinion. Our back up goalie umm, Buttercup is a limited player at this level, Banyard runs around with his eyes stuck in the headlights, others are on loan and not being played, which equals cost and overhead. Let’s not beat about the bush, the Prem is fast, skilful and hard. You may only get a few chances a game and although we have been brilliant at this level and many of the existing squad will adapt, other will cost us dearly. The top half of the table will be very tough and the others kick, butt and scrap something we do not do well. We will be marked harder and closer. We do not have unlimited budgets so we need to be prudent. I would have possibly changed the team more this year, but hey what do I know. Norwich and Swansea have shown us the way, so you don’t need to totally rip and replace. We will need more pace and tougher in the tackle.

I know there are statistics and statistics and damed lies but if I am reading correctly a goal time distribution table them a couple of facts stand out. Saints concede more goals (25%) just after half-time (46-60mins.) and 24% in last 15 minutes. What is more worrying Reading have scored 39% of their goals and conceded just 13% in the last 15 minutes. Total concentration is required for FULL 90+ minutes on FRiday.

I am not convinced the difference between the Premiership & Championship is as great as it once was. To me the standard in the Championship has gone up while the Premiership is not what it was as the Spanish Clubs have proved by their superiority over the premiership's top 4 -6 clubs. I always get the impression that the referees give all the decisions to Man U such as the penalties they are so often questionable . I think the thing that clubs like Norwich Swansea and Saints are proving is that they play as a team .....maybe they don't have the big names but the players play for one another and not themselves and this is the reason why they are succeeding. The future looks really good for Saints ,long may it continue!

Davies has been good, not sure if he is good enough for the prem, either way would need a good reserve. Not good enough Buttercup Jardi Bialkowski Barnyard Forte Dickson Good players unlucky Holmes Punch Seabourne Too injury prone Connally Struggling at this level Hammond ? Harding ?[/p]
Great call. Also to go Forecast Doble Falque and Dean. This frees up 16 places and we need a good six GK RB LB RW Tiger CM Back up for Rickie COYR[/p]
Why do you fell the need to rip the squad to pieces rather than build on what we already have? Doesn't sound like a strategy for success to me.[/p]
At the very least, why don't we just enjoy promotion with the team that got it for us before we start dismantling the team.[/p]
We will need more pace and tougher in the tackle.[/p]
Still totally agreeing with you So who would you bring in ??? BlandfordSaint

He doesn't know that word...
What it means Shitelines, is when you're old enough to leave school, you have the option of being different from most of your neighbours, and going out to do a thing called 'work', which means you actually contribute something in exchange for some financial reward. Don't have to live your life on benefits like your uncle/brother/dad( all the same person probably for you, but just in case)

You obviously don't have a job, any Skate who can sit on a Southampton newspapers website commenting on an opposing team's centre forward at 8.42am is on the dole.

Do something useful, get out of your caravan, take your mummysister, slop out your buckets and use them to collect some money for the team you proclaim to love, after Saturday and collecting a £5k fine you need it.

I will laugh my b0llox off if you get liquidised for £5k. How good would that be, 1 point, relegation and liquidised all from your bubble journey to Southampton, I would love even if we win the Championship 2 by points, we got against you.

No mush, you've had your cup final for this season be a good boy and get your bucket.

Why ? my misses wants a new lamp stand that plays a tune when plugged in. Ok its not my taste but the mother in law who I should point out has cataracts thinks its a great idea.

SKATE
Originates from Naval sailors of Portsmouth in England getting lonely while at sea. These sick individuals would get a skate fish, slit it in half and nail it to a board. This would then be used to provide sexual pleasure.

Hence people from Portsmouth are known as Skates.

this is the best idea to date in what to do with everything from the skate nation when it's finally deceased.my bid of £2 is for a job lot then we could do a proper taxidermist job on old
ronald mcwestwood.get him stuffed and on display in that ready made museum fratton park
along with all the fossilised trophies they all bang on about.
the only things they have won fairly was about a million years ago.mind you old tugboats idea of a lamp paints a proper funny picture in my mind.you could even connect his bell arm to the mains and hey presto a lamp/door bell.

In 25 years of following the Saints we've had loads of strikers who have started well but then faded, like Colin Clarke. Either that or they have had delusions of grandure like James Beattie. Lambert is not in the same league as Le Tissier, Shearer or Rod Wallace but he deserves to be rated as a legend given his excellent service. Let's hope he can be like Grant Holt next season and prove the doubters wrong again.

As you are certain to get promoted now what are you expectations for next season. Is it more than just survival. Look at what Norwich QPR and Swansea have done. Can you do what Newcastle have done in 2 seasons. Do you think you have the financial clout to compete? Many clubs in the prem are in dangerous situations financially as they chase the dream is it worth it on the chance you may win something? Interested in you opinions. Thanks.

He behaved the same way at St Mary's againt Pompey. At this point I don't care what his issue is, he needs to wake up or move on. He had a brilliant season and a half--and I've been a fan. But football is about results, you're only as good as your last few games, and lately he's looked mediocre.

John, could you get me a car boot load of the old timbers please.

I think there will be a business opportunity for selling memorabilia to Saints fans once Shatton is closed.

I have an artisan lined up to make some little wall hanging cuckoo clocks - based on the familiar Swiss chalets idea, but actually featuring a miniature Shatton Park frontage.

You may think the market will be very limited, but the they will have a further unique feature. On the hour the cuckoo will pop out of the Shatton door and f@rt.

Agree, and I think Norwich prove this especially. Look at how they tore up Spurs last night. Meanwhile look at the top 10 in the championship, all solid teams. The gulf is not what it was. I put it down to too many imported players swelling the Prem, forcing some excellent players into the second tier for games. Even Pompey and Doncaster have some decent players about them.

I think the model NC and NA regularly quote would be a dream come true for any Saints fan. I hope enough money is invested in the team to enable us to consolidate in the Premier League and rustle a few feathers along the way, in a similar vain to Norwich and Swansea. I truly believe we only need one or two additions to do this. I certainly would not want us spending big money on so called superstars and paying them stupid money. Pompey tried that and in the end that is what has destroyed their club. Southampton have one of the best academies in the football world. Look at the players we have produced over the years right back to Shearer, the Wallace brothers. . .Mat la tiss, up to these last few years, Bale, Walcott, Oxlade Chaimberlin. . the promised land for us is to continue this development. . .and build a team around our future young stars many of whoom are just a year or two away from breaking into the first team. we do not need to spend big. . . We are growing big!! the club is being run properly. . . The infer structure is in place. . The five year plan is ahead of schedule and the ten year plan could well see the need for an even bigger stadium.
Ok. . . It's still a dream. . . But it genuinely has real substance. We are aiming for the stars and that means top four and Champoins league year in year out!!! COYRs!!!

Although i agree it's unfair on current players who have (nearly) got us to the premier league, i think it's wrong to assume that we'd survive without people coming in and for that to happen people need to get off the wage bill, after all our club is effectively run like a business..

Some of these players i think should go :

Jaidi
Seabourne
(so obviously another cb is needed)
Hammond (harsh but we have cm's and i think we need another strong ball winner)
Barnard
Connely
..Possibly Davis if a good replacement is lined up.
But i trust NC and NC with signings as mentioned earlier or on another post it's important to still be a team and not just sign "prem exprience" on big wages.

Reading were lucky tonight. Brighton best chances and a missed pen. Readings goal a massive deflection. They are beatable and if we want the title that's what we need to do. It's got draw written all over it though.

I don't think so,you find this game against Brighton will have taken a lot out of them, not much rest for them now until Friday,I take Saints to win this.

And the truth is we just don't know, so it's tension city here as usual. Being top of the league is ecstacy and worrying about staying there is agony.

Still, looks like HMS Fratton just sunk.

Quality posts, all four of you. No matter how far you travel, WestWales and Pete,I hope you have the ride of your lives at Posh.

Confucious, sorry, I never replied to you regarding how I (or rather my 'curry-suffering' lower end) coped with celebrating Monday's goals. I'm happy to report that all was fine; well just about.

However, I'm planning another curry on Wednesday evening and, on Thursday, I'll be flying from Gatwick to Porto and expect to be in need of the facilities soon after take off. From memory, the outbound flight crosses the coast somewhere over Southsea. I just hope the seatbelt sign goes off early enough for me to use that 'window of opportunity'. Cr4pping in the sea is so polluting, I like to think that cr4pping over Portsea Island is simply a public service.
