Saints Rumours
AS excitement builds ahead of Saints' return to the Premier League, scores of transfer rumours are flying around.
If you come across any transfer rumours, add them below or email them into to dan.kerins@dailyecho.co.uk explaining where you got it from.
The list needs the help of Saints fans to make it a success and as reliable as possible. The aim is to make sure all supporters are on top of all rumours going around.
Just because a name is on here, don't necessarily expect a deal to be imminent or certain to happen.

come on Echo is this really needed right now when the football season isn't even finished? Why not have a rumour mill for the 2013/2014 season as well while you're at it? Unbelievable.
Rumours are being printed for all clubs - all this is doing is putting all the Saints one together so supporters that are interested can find them easily.

We all know where we lack strength - so no good second guessing players from clubs in UK. I think we will go farther afield - and introduce some of our young prospects.
We will need some experience - but I'd rather go for youthful enthusiasm than cool headed experience for bigger bucks.
I love the fact we are united as one, and really play for each other. Bringing in players from relegated clubs is not the answer. Young, hungry and ambitious is what we want...but Nigel knows that and I trust in his judgement!

Hope the scouting team are working hard for next season!
A couple of English/British Premier League experienced players, and maybe a couple from the developement squad making the move up......
What do you think?

So Burnley may have to come down from 8m.
Though I guess he would prefer Everton, cos its close to home.
If they can raise the money.
Just feel a lot of players being mentioned are no better than we have and as NA said we now have to up the level. The players coming in have to be better.

Then change the formation to five at the back with two wing backs, Fox and Richardson. That way Fox and Richardson's defensive duties are reduced and they can concentrate running up the lines and crossing the ball which is their strength.
I would also like to see a box to box central midfielder and a quick wide player. Plus two strikers and an additional keeper to back up and then take over from Kelvin in the future.
I don't think we can get away with 442 in the Prem. Teams play continental football in the Prem. Where as in the Championship teams play English football.
A friend of mine is a Saints fan living in Toyko, been there 32 years, born in Hampshire. He has worries about Tadanari Lee's fitness. Evidently he has had some very serious injuries in the past.
Having said that, I am sure he was checked out carefully before we signed him.

Lets leave it to Nigel he certainly has not let us down. Pardew left here under a cloud just as he did at West Ham. When Nigel took us over we were in the bottom 4 in league onet . The post above has a limited interlect who only can use bad language. He should save his comments for the Portsmouth evening news, because he is clearly a blue nose.

I would love to see a "Statement" signing- what do you mean? What I mean is, when we signed Lambert in league 1 it was a statement of intent but it also lifted everyone and sent a message. Love it. This does so many things.
When we signed Billy Sharp it did the same thing.
So... I would like us to get at least one BIG signing that can damage defenses in the Premier League- maybe Rodrigues for say $6 million. Or, maybe Michu.
And then after that- 1 Center Defender who is better than fonte or hooiveld. (brings them up, and brings competition)
And then one "Scrapper" not really sure who fits that mould, and would love to hear from you guys on this.
And then 1 utility player who can play right wing or right defence.
Thoughts??
Get rid of (with appreciation)-
Barnard, Forte, Seaborne, Butterfield... who else??

I wouldnt mind betting that the first named acquisition isn't on anyones list today. I love the way that Nigel and Nicola work.
However I would love the club to get just ONE massive signing - someone of the status and calibre of the Keegan signing all those years ago. I still remember not believing it until I saw it on the news in the evening.
I expect we will sign some strong players in several positions.. but just ONE MASSIVE name would be wonderful .. It wont happen this season though. .we need to establish ourselves .. but I can dream.
I don't mind this thread - it gives us something to banter about. I've had the occasional pop at the Echo in the past but overall they do what they do adequately. It's only the obvious gap fillers that annoy me now and then.

So all we need to do is finish in the top 10, get into europe win a cup or 2 & we'll be able to get lots of massive signings, not just 1!!! Simples.

OK here's my thoughts (if you care)-
I would love to see a "Statement" signing- what do you mean?
Thoughts??
Get rid of (with appreciation)-
Barnard, Forte, Seaborne, Butterfield... who else??

I want a big signing to let the Prem know we have arrived and then the usual Nigel signings of players we do not know and were not expecting.
We do not need many and the ones we do get will need to be better than what we have or no point getting them in!
The youth team players need to be told they are going to get a chance, but they will need to step up to the level !

Ashley you kicked out 10 players, i don't think we are going to replace 10 and our youngsters are still too young to step up regularly.
I think Connelly, Jaidi, Holmes, Forte, Bart, possibly Forecast and Dickenson.
Forecast to possibly replaced by Dovey.
Bart by a young keeper like Schemical
With maybe 5 outfield players mainly from abroad.
Holmes and Forte have been on loan. Jaidi and Connelly have been good servants but have not really figured, nor has Dickinson. Forecast has never been in the picture really. Whilst if Bart has not staked his claim in the lower leagues he is unlikely to in the prem.
Sharp took Connelly's place and Fox , Dickinson.

When relegated from the championship, we had a young French player, who was told it would effect his chances of playing for France. Yet a young lad who came to us at 18 in our darkest season, who had no reason to be loyal, stayed with us when it was easier to leave. The offers were there. Thankfully his country saw his talent and he continued playing internationally.
Thank you Morgan.

Strangely enough posted 29/3/2012
Was a radio solent interview and can still be found on the BBC web.
So immediately debt is transferred to shares and we get the story Saints are for sale.
Whilst the actual interview leads to the opposite view.
Also remember if the club were for sale then Nicola has people lined up ready to buy.
You buy a club for 14m that was in its premiership days valued at around 54m. So its value must be around that again. Plus the club has just got 40m.
You are a multi-national business like Lieberr. You have invested 33m and with all the above you are going to sell for 25m. Total cow pat. But then that sums up Goal.com.
The lose incured by the club is far less than anticipated. It includes the buying of the club and the development.
Someone read the article and thought this sounds good. We can get mileage out of this.
New rulings in the Premiership coming in during the next couple of years state, that clubs must be free from debt or face european bans and transfer embargo's
New rules in the championship about clubs being in debt. makes sense to change it into shares.
Note once these new rules come in clubs cannot, be subsidised by their owners. Other than facility improvement. So on wage and transfers they must live within their means.
So what the future holds who knows.
But to Goal.com as normal.
Cowpats, cowpats,cowpats.

Also slate me if you will, but I am thinking about the future of this Great club. I understand Reading have axed 13 players already including Brian Howard.
I read in the press the other day that Southampton Norwich and Reading are all after Snodgrass from Leeds United. It would fill the gap because neither Chaplow and Guly are natural players in that position.
I also heard on Sky that Rodriguez only has one year left on his contract. Thus value wise his value drops . Eight or Six Million is out of the question for a player with only a year left. Prehaps Mr Howe should have taken the money last year. In the current market with one year left his value would be between 2.5 million to 3million. Come January it could down to 1.5 million as he would have only six months left on his contract. Nicola and Nigel are very shrewed and prehaps they might do a deal later in the year if Everton don,t sign him. Curtis Davies is a possible addition depending on Birmingham in the play offs. He is a good strong centre have who has played in the Premier league still in his twenties and would be a good competition for Hoover Maritn and Fonte. Buying from the Championship can work. When Big Chris was manager he brought wisely from the old second division and third division. The likes of Cockerill, Forrest, Flowers, Clarke, Hobson, Moore, Adams, and Richard Hall all played their part in keeping us in the top flight. Also Nicholl had faith to blend them with youth. Such as Le tisser, Shearer, Maddison, tthe Wallace twins, Blake, Maskell , Steve Davis, and Andy Cook, Jeff Kenna and of course Baneli along with a couple of non league players Dodd from Bath City and Jon Gittens from Padget Rovers. Thus with the 18 to 20 players who played last season, some highly talented players from the under 21s and under 18s plus 6 good additions we will cope. Previous managers be the days of Sky football money did it ie Big MC and Chris. I was last at because I suggested a budget of 15 Million for players, considering we spent nearer 10 Million last season.
I seem to remember Dav Jones had a budget of 10 Million back in the season 1998 to 1999 and in those days we were still at the Dell.
At then end of the day I have every belief in Nigel and Nicola to take us forward this season. If Nigel prepares the squad like he did last summer we will be off to a flyer.

Is this a subtle referrence to The Skates' next 100 defeats or a slightly rude referrence to what she'd get if she made it to (or 'in') Skatesville.
Either way, one might say that, with comments like that, she's laid herself wide open.

I noticed that I have received some critical comments about who should move on. I will justify my actions by saying that some of the players on the list are out of contract at the end of the season. Both Ryan Dickson and Jonathan Forte are not good enough and thats way they were out on loan most of the season. Also as someone who has supported the Saints for over forty years certain players who should be role models for young people have been very poor representives of this club. I think NA will just fix the obvious problems and start the season knowing he has got a squad that can play together. A right winger, holding central midfielder and a centre half... I would be amazed if he brings in 6 new players. Also people seem to forget that finishing second in the championship on the amount of points we had pretty much equates us to Premiership side placed 2/3rds down the table. So what we have now is good enough to compete, we don't need an overhaul, just 3 obvious holes...

He said over the next weeks there would be some heartbreaking decisions over his squad.
I think he will bring in 6 players, which is what he did last season.
We play a squad system so it does not mean they will all be in the first team together. Remember we can pick 18 players on a match day.
We are allowed to play players under 21 in addition to the 25 man squad. So there is no need to push them into the squad when we can use them when needed.
I do not see us leaving ourselves short on squad players. So I think only 6 or so will go.
I am not sure where the facts are that state we would of finished 2/3rds down the premiership.
I would go with the fact that we only took 11pts out of thirty against the other top 6 sides and had a minus goal difference as a better indication of where we are and what we need to do.

I know there is great debate currently about who comes and who goes and we generally are in a post season promotion afterglow.
I feel it is at this time we should give a thought for others, who are less fortunate than ourselves.
They feel that they have been badly treated by everybody.
Poeple told them that they had to pay their bills.
They had 10 points deducted, without any consideration at all.
They have had to get rid of players and staff.
On the pitch they felt to have had loads of bad luck.
Cr-p referees!
Then relegation.
Luckily some of this was offset by the FILL THE PARK initiative which was "masterminded" by the "best fans in the South"
Saints fans are renown for their charitable consideration of others.
i.e. We even gave them 2 points to help them, at risk of our own promotion push.
Keep up the good work saints supporters.
ALWAYS REMEMBER ABOUT THOSE LESS FORTUNATE.

I know he's unproven at Premiership level. So is RDM !! I know we will be expected to be the new boys getting thumped by big name teams every week and I know that managers get the blame. But I doubt we will be in the realm of changing just because a big name is available.
The "big name" RDM who has had a smidgeon of success with one of the most expensive teams in the world is very lucky to have a taken over that team even for a few weeks. He won't stay there and he wouldnt know what to do at our club.
Lay off Adkins, give the man a chance to show he is a future big name manager. He deserves more respect after the success he has given this club.

Saints have struggled when we started changing managers every 5 minutes... Even if we start slowly in the Prem ( which I don't think will happen ) , the pressure should not be put on NA, supporters need to realise that given 2 or 3 good-to-very good seasons in the Prem NA WILL BE a "big name manager". That said all professional managers have to deliver, its what they are paid highly for. So there will be sensible targets and I am pretty confident 3 from 6 points from 15 games from the the first 19 is reasonable.... It does not need to be a target that makes or breaks a managers job but there has to be a reality button. I think NA and all but two or three of the players ready for the Prem, and with 2 or 3 key signings we will surprise a few teams ....
The lack of confidence being shown by some in NA is disappointing. His results in two seasons are simply brilliant.

I am very happy with what he has done. My comments were based on three things. One an article I read in The Times which said RDM was a personal friend of Nicola Cortese and Cortese had consulted him before he decided to take the job with Saints.
Two, the owners of the club, in my opinion will want to do one of two things with Southampton F.C.
Move it forward rapidly and get it into the top half of the Premier League and keep it there, and improve it's playing staff so Europe is a possibility.
Or stay in the Premier League and sell the club on for a good profit.
To achieve either of those things, if you look at other clubs, there is a need to employ a manager with more
experience than Nigel to achieve that. Unless Cortese is willing to let Nigel develop at his own pace, say like Moyes at Everton. Personally I don't think Cortese is that type of man. I think he requires close to instant results and is driven by tight time scales and stretch targets linked to bonuses. After all Nigel is our third manager since Cortese became CEO. I also think Nigel's end of the season comments about leaving the club at some point, wasn't just a throw away remark. I believe Cortese will have set him a stretch target for next season and won't be happy with just say finishing 13th or thereabouts. Where as I and probably many Saints fans would be happy with that level of performance and hope to see an improvement the following season
I hope that explains my earlier comment, it wasn't a lack of respect. I think what he has achieved is fantastic. But I do think if we are not in the top 10 by say November he will be vulnerable. I would like to see him stay and develop. But I guess I just don't think CEO's who have worked for Swiss investment banks think that way!

Where as I and probably many Saints fans would be happy with that level of performance and hope to see an improvement the following season I hope that explains my earlier comment, it wasn't a lack of respect. I think what he has achieved is fantastic. But I do think if we are not in the top 10 by say November he will be vulnerable. I would like to see him stay and develop. But I guess I just don't think CEO's who have worked for Swiss investment banks think that way! RDM was also successful with MK Dons, WBA and as well as Chelsea.
STICK RDM up your ar$e
if you recall when Pardew was here he was told his target was to get into the play-offs. He didn't but he won the JPT and we started with -10 in the league. But he was told winning the JPT was not substitutional for not getting into the play-offs. That's why I think he will be vulnerable if we are struggling in November.
I think if we were relegated he would be sacked, despite the fantastic work he has done.
Nobody wants to see him succeed more than me! But!

On RDM, he wasn't a success at West Brom, yes they played decent football, but he got sacked because of poor results. At MK Dons he did finish 3rd, but lost to the underdogs Scunthorpe (managed by guess who, Adkins!). I think we should at least give Adkins a chance as opposed to starting to contemplate possible replacements if he were to leave for any reason (luckily I don't think Liverpool will be after him this time).

He deserves more respect after the success he has given this club.As the person who suggested that RDM may take over from Nigel Adkins I should point out I wasn't knocking him. Glasgow Saint says Daily Record reports Steve Davis is going to Southampton for 2 million Record usally is right. Davis is Quality best mid fielder in Scotland very pacey would leave Hammond for dead. Scores goals. Capt 50 times by Northern Ireland. Played for both Fulham and Aston Villa. He is Premier league standard. Normally if Club like Rangers were not in financial meltdown they would want possibly 6 million for him. Still only 27. He clearly would be a bargain at 2 million and twice the player Hammond is. This could be the first Rabbit out of the hat. Saw Hooper score 5 goals yesterday, my late Granny who at 87 was cutting down 30 ft trees could have scored the goals. I think he is too much of a gamble. We would be better looking at Rodriguez who only has one year left on his contract so 8 Million which has been quoted is wide of the mark for a player nearly out of contract. Rhodes could be a good. Punt. I hear there is an out of Contract striker look for a move back to St Marys( he certainly has loads of experience it would be his third spell with us anybody guess who I am talking about)

He knows he can make mega- bucks playing for so called big teams, win things and be selected to play for England.
I think the selection of AOC, and Andy Carrol prove this point.
IMO. Carrol, in particular must be a real kick in the n^ts, he only played well in his last 2 games, one of these as sub.
What must Rickie be thinking? He also was overlooked and he's better than Holt.

We need the SHILTON/KEEGAN/ARMST
RONG/WRIGHT/DENNIS/ CASE/WILLIAMS type of quality for the future, If we are to make an IMPACT as Cortese has promised - if we are to do more than make up the numbers - flair and quality are a must... that list above ( bar some silly names ) doesn't float my boat!

Alex Ferguson had one the league with Aberdeen, he went to Man U as a hopeful. His early part of his reign was shaky- but they stuck with it - the rest is history - but even then it took time to get his first championship win... let alone the rest. Time. its key. Lawrie Mac was relegated first season in charge.. then won the FA cup and secured promotion 2 seasons later. Time -patience- This is something no one has at the moment- we need to get some, be pleased with NA - who knows what sort of manager he is yet to become!! Look at all the BIG NAME managers that have failed..big name means nothing, and pride is before a crash!!
Alicesdad wrote:I fully expect NA to flourish in the Prem.... I am predicting 13th finish next season based on what we have done and what we many do.

We also all know that NC carefully weighs up the financial options. For example, we got Connolly on a free, for a short contract and NOT a premiership wage.
Owen wants premiership football with the same salary to keep his earnings and profile up before his flits off to somewhere like Japan or America. The sums do not add up for him to be a realistic choice and his injury record makes him high risk. Everyone knows this, it is not a secret.
NC was a Swiss banker and if there's one thing he will avoid it's a high risk like this. That much is absolutley certain !!!!!!
Simples.
We can speculate on the player purchase front for many weeks until tangible news emerges, but one thing is for sure we MUST buy another goalkeeper and NA must be burning the midnight oil and tyre rubber making sure that this position is covered soon.
The Ince deal looks like it would be very good business, if it's true. We offload a previous problem player, and get someone with real potential. Fingers crossed on that one.

32 is not old today for a professional footballer.
You mention Scholes,Giggs both have had their injuries, in their time.
I think the difference is they no longer need pace where they now play.
Owen's great strength was speed to get beyond defences.
His previous long injury record, now prevents him from doing this at the top level.
If Saints were to sign him it could only to cover for Billy Sharp as a penalty box poacher.

I am sure Holloway would love to have Puncheon as part of the deal. The Echo seem to have run out of stories related to Saints. Just when we are or relaxing in the sun watching England under achieving at the European Championships Nigel and Nicola, will out of the blue sign sign 6 players from around the world that no one has heard of and they will be real gems.

Whilst I am not convinced about Owen if he's on a free and doesn't want to much money he might be worth a punt. He is only 2 years older than Rickie and is the third highest scorer of all time for England behind Charlton and Lineker ffs!
How old are Scholes and Giggs?
I agree that youth is predominantly the way forward but our best teams also had some experienced players in them - Ball, Keegan, Case, George, Mills, Watson etc.
I understand your stance about Michael Owen's age.

-550 professional appearances (including International).
-277 professional goals (including International).
- Means an average of 0.50 goals a game or 1 goal in every 2 games.
-15 years of professional football
- Which means an average of 36 games per year
- and 18.46 goals per year.
For some one that has suffered from a lot of injuries and has been sidelined in recent years at the likes of Man U despite being fit and injury free for a while, you cant argue those are still good statistics.
Don't get me wrong he will still demand wages that do not fit in with our budget, in terms of the amount of talent we wish to bring in and spend upon, but with statistics like that a fit Owen......well speaks for it's self if he is given the opportunity!
(I am aware that a lot of his goals did come from his earlier years, just look past it all you fact haters out there)
