Premier League rules could force Adkins to wield axe
7:50am Thursday 10th May 2012 in Sport
By Adam Leitch, Chief Sports Writer
NIGEL ADKINS
Nigel Adkins faces the prospect of having to axe some of his most loyal stars if he makes more than a handful of summer signings.
The Saints boss is weighing up what he requires to have a good crack at the Premier League following promotion.
But top flight squad size rules means that he may face the heartbreaking decision of denying a place to some of the players who got the club there.
Premier League rules state that each club can only name a 25-man squad from which to pick throughout the season, which can only be updated after the January transfer window.

You do? Of course you do. Anyway, that's exactly my reaction to talk about new players or potential weaknesses. We've just achieved a remarkable promotion and we've not done nearly enough celebrating of that fact. It shows, to me, a lack a taste to be talking about new players while the current ones aren't even back from a well deserved holiday.

First players under 21, do not have to be registered in the squad to play.
Realism says we will only sign 6 players max.
Jaidi, Connelly, Holmes, Forte, Bart/and or Forecast and one other, will be the ones to go. With our deepest thanks.
Swindon want Holmes who personally I still rate.
Forte has been loaned out.
With Rickie, Sharpe, Lee, Barny, Guly, I do not see DC getting a look in. Though he has been great for us.
Jaidi is retiring.
IMO neither Bart or Forecast are premier league.

He knows that.
Sentiment has no place in business.
SFC. is no different.
Our fantastic group of players, with very few changes, have taken this club from -10 points in Div 1 to the Prem.
Also collected a trophy along the way.
A fair proportion of these players will prevail because they will be able to step up.
Nigel will already know who will be going.
Rubbish part of his job but that's why he gets the big bucks.
From a supporters point of view, it's a shame some of our heroes will be going.
Thats football.
Evolvolution to be competative but within the rules.
Good luck to all Saints players that will leave us, shortly.
Good hunting Nigel, bring us the new quality players required to continue this great momentum.

Could somebody explain exactly what the position is regarding player sales and puchases and club debt now??
I hear mention of rules limiting us to a wage structure as a percentage of turnover.
Then there was some mention of wages being restricted according to income.
Then there was something I saw last week about not being able to go over a certain debt limit when you balance out player sales and purhcases.
All I understand is that they are trying to stop clubs getting massive debts and also trying to stop the massive "rich owner" syndrome killing the game overall.

But if you think the blokes on here are cruel, you should get down to St Marys. I passed by yesterday and dozens of female fans are assembling on fold-up chairs. They're just like the tricoteuse who gathered at the Place de la Revolution to watch the guillotine fall. Most are just sitting morbidly with their knitting, waiting patiently for a victim, but some are cackling suggested names for the cull..... I just hope that one of us has the courage and stealth to become the Scarlet and White Striped Pimpernel.

Originally in the Premiership it was 2013. I think it was moved to 2015. This was to allow the major clubs to negate their debts.
Some of which are huge.
I think I am right in saying the following.
1 A club is only allowed to spend its income on wages and players.
2 This includes merchandise, sponsors, gate receipts etc.
3 They cannot borrow from any financial institution or receive gifts and that includes the owner to enhance their squad or wage bill.
4The owner though can invest money in the facilities such as extensions and training facilities.
5 The penalties are
a being banned from Europe
b fines
c transfer embargos
That was the last I heard recently in an article from Michel Platini.
clubs in Europe showed a 21 billion debt at the last accounts.
I personally believe this and no other reason was why Saints debt was turned into share value. So Saints are already in line with proposed FIFA regs.
Once the ruling came in that would not have been possible.
We have seen similar schemes come in at lower league level already. The delay for the top European leagues is because of the massive debt and giving top clubs a chance to clear it.
hope that helps

Adam Lallana posted a simple Tweet last week that said “I love my team”. In my opinion, a simple but bold statement that echoes that special ingredient of our recent success. These guys will run through brick walls for each other. As the saying goes “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.”

Nigel will in my view do the following: Move for players once play offs are finished. 2 Wait until Premier season is over on Sunday. Keep an eye out for players during the summer Euros as this is a good time to view new players.4 Wait until July 1st when players are out of contract and can be brought in on a Bosman.5 Players such as Holmes and Jadi are contracted until mid night on the 30th of June expect movement the next day. 6 Business begins.7 During the the O games some of the worlds up and coming talent with be in the UK for the football, thus a good chance to window shop. 8 Nigel can the still add to the squad until the 31st of August. This gives him a window of three weeks to view targets playing in the various leagues. 9 Nigel can if necessary buy in January. There's and old saying don't put all your eggs in one basket. Also a good Chairman will always spread his budget as much as he can, and be as creative as he can be. Nicola and Nigel have nothing to prove in that department. The options for additions to the squad is varied. But reality is players will have to go. I understand the budget is about 15 Million which would be prudent spending.

NA has stated that players coming in have to be better than what we have, Premiership standard.
Several players mentioned by fans are not appreciably better than what we have.
There is also their wages to consider.
Bring in 10 cheap players and what have you got? A relegation squad.
Bring in 4 quality players and a couple of young ones, working with what we have and we will be okay.
The transfer money has not been discussed openly.`So I don't think anyone knows how much there is.

I will always be grateful to the individual players that contributed to our back-to-back promotions, but the bottom line is this.
I support Southampton Football Club, not individuals.
Players I rate will, in all probability, be released by NA, whilst some I don't rate will be retained. Such is football.
Some players NA wants to keep, as squad players, will move on to clubs where they will be first on the team sheet. Such is football.
Players NA wants to sign, won't sign. Such is football.
Sir Alex Ferguson knows that it is never too soon to replace players, as he has continually done for the last umpteen seasons.
He understands that no matter how good a player has been, in the past, it is the future that is important.
In football, it is never too soon to be considering new players, and if NA ever starts to think like that, then I'm sure NC will already have a replacement in mind for him. Such is football.

Then a no. 2 goalkeeper - i quite fancy, not in that way, Pompey's goalie (he pulled off sveral world class saves in both games against us this season).
Then a player in the matt philips , ince or jarvis mould to liven things up up front.

Which clarifies even more why Saints debt was turned to shares.
Anyway interested parties should check UEFA FFP,which is UEFA website and goes through things.
Also the Telegraph shows 2011 accounts of every premier club.
gives some insight.
I just hope we go for a couple of decent European players, not championship hopefuls and premier rejects that will cost around 3-4 mil a time in an over inflated english market.
We are already seeing some championship players with silly price tags.

This did of course involve the 'Turd Chicken' test. Lowe climbed to a high branch of a Staplewood tree, took his pants down and prepared to dump from 40ft. Beneath him the players were forced to huddle in a tight group and await the chairman's log. The first to run was declared 'chicken' and therefore 'out'.
I think this method could stand in principle, but perhaps in addition, any player who actually gets splattered should also be 'out' on account of being too slow.
My calculations show that a player of Prem league quality could allow a falling turd of approx eight ounces (accelerating to 10ft per second) get to within 9ft of him before doing a runner (14ft for a soft/sprayed/fragmen
ted deposit). A Championship player would need to run at 14ft proximity of the brown missile to get clear.
These are rough figures but with the sophisticated sports technology available at the club they could be refined to provide remarkably accurate results - including minute adjustments for a f@rt propelled log.
For the sake of supporter confidence, I also think transparency is needed here and the whole thing should be open for fans to see at St Marys - though noisy expressions of support or otherwise should not be allowed. The emerging log should also be shown on the large screen as it would not otherwise be immediately visible to spectators who would need to be able to judge the precise timing of the players' panic.
