Riley a step closer to AFC Totton job

STEVE RILEY STEVE RILEY

STEVE Riley has ended his seven-year ‘love affair’ with Bashley, fuelling speculation that he is about to take over at Evo-Stik Southern Premier rivals AFC Totton.

Southampton-based Riley has been linked with the Testwood Stadium vacancy ever since Stuart Ritchie left to become manager of Havant & Waterlooville.

But the 46-year-old former Havant, Fareham and Newport IoW defender says he has no idea where his future lies.

“I’m a free agent at the moment and am open to offers,” he said.

“I don’t know what my next move will be.

“If I don’t continue in management, I may set up my own coaching school.

“Who knows what the future will hold.”

Born and bred in Newcastle, Riley joined Bashley as a player-coach in August 2005 and became manager two months later.

If this is the 'big announcement' that the club are due to make, it feels like announcing a 99p store for the town as opposed to a John Lewis. Is this indication of the 'real' financial status of the club. With Michael Charles likely to leave, is there going to be an exodus?

Negative bugger arent you writers cramp. Riley is a excellent manager raising Bashley into a decent non league position for what is a very small but good village club who have punched above there weight. It would be a good move for us if he came here

Not negative, but there are two points to look at; a) if Daily Echo reports and quotes from the club are correct, there are higher calibre managers who applied who have managed at higher levels, that would be beneficial to squad, to take them through the levels. b) whatever the budget restrictions, Steve Riley hasn't won anything with Bashley, although they've played some good football. Totton's recent success needs to be built on, with winners.

It is a case of what we can afford and the playing budget available. The bigger names will not be interested IMO but i hope i am wrong. The chairman has said that a big sponsor is on the horizon so maybe if that comes to pass it could change things. It depends what he means by big. 25K is a lot but not for a seasons wages

sean whelan (bluenose65) posted on efc site some pretty damming facts about the afc totton budget for 2012/13 - 65k max. depending on the sale of gosney and a number of others.

Didn't see that. Didn't know about it. With that in mind, if figures are correct, unless this 'massive' sponsor coughs up, we are in for a tough season.

I hope that the new sponsor happens for us. I reckon that Fallon pumped some decent money in and there was the cup money. It is replacing that money which is a bit unknowni reckon.thats why the money we will have available will have a lot to do with the manager we get

Pasty, that was my first point that you accused me of being negative! With 99p you can only afford so much! However, the club have portrayed that the kitty is not that empty, in which case why spend 99p when you may well be able to afford better.

I don't suppose we will really know the amount in total available even if the new sponsor happens. They reckon it will be announced at the end of this week so lets see Mr Cramp

Oh children children! Obviously not interested in potentially poor financial state of AFC Totton. Go squabble elsewhere, and let the club members decide on a 99p or Johnewis future.

Peachy1
You said a few weeks ago on here that certain ex Directors of Eastleigh were crooks.I am sure these people were decent hard working people like what we have at Totton in our committee.
This column was about who would be the new Stags manager and what budget they would have etc etc. Not about your Bluenoose friend and the stupid comments he made on the Eastleigh site that heathrow has said.So dont tell us about checking facts Peachy
