Southampton close in on Jay Rodriguez

Saints transfer target Jay Rodriguez Saints transfer target Jay Rodriguez

Saints have had a £7m bid for Jay Rodriguez accepted by Burnley.

As revealed last week, the two clubs were in discussions regarding a deal worth in excess of £6m for the striker.

The Clarets, who are resigned to losing the 22-year-old this summer, had valued the player at £8m.

But with the forward having just one year left on his Turf Moor contract, the Championship side have been willing to accept a smaller sum.

If Rodriguez does move to Saints, the fee would break the club's long-standing transfer record, set when they signed Rory Delap for £4m from Derby in 2001.

This would be a great deal. It would forever end the tag line that Rory Delap. Was our biggest ever signing.

He might score a few too.

I bet Sharp regrets the interview where he said we needed a few more players...

Thought for the day "Transfer fees and wages in Football are crazy"

The average British wage is about 30k. League 1 Footballers could get 100k Prem 150k. Their agents can sort endorsements and advertising top up.
No way should clubs have to fork out 70-100% of their income on wages.

As for transfers.. apply for vacancies... send a cv, video and medical certificate with your application... Kind of like the real world.

It's time for the players to be brought down to reality if they want the big money they can get it from playing well and earning sponsors.

BUT: we all know it will never happen as long as the leaders take their share of betting money and drug and arms dealers are allowed to owner clubs.

Is football clean?

With a bit of luck Dan the football.com bubble will also burst and financially well run clubs (like the Saints now are) can step up.

It does seem alot of money, but I think this is the going price for young english talent. I also was hoping for a Premier League striker but who is there?? If you want someone proven at the highest level then you will be paying alot more than £7 million. And I am sure with a strike force of Lambert, Sharp, Lee and Rodriguez someone will score us the goals needed to stay in the top flight.

dopplershift says...
8:34am Tue 29 May 12

If you want to play you've got to pay. That is the bottom line. We're no longer lower league material we're prem class and we have to bolster all areas of the 'squad' not just the team. JR gives us another dimension and one that NA feels will benefit a style of play we may play against certain opposition perhaps. If you have only 1-2 game plans you're gonna get unstuck big time. Rather than spend £10m on a proven prem player who only scored 5 goals last season it makes sense to buy 2 players for that cost. If we had a team like say Reading I'd be more worried but we do have strength in depth and the team know how to play together and seem to love each other. Don't want to upset that as it's worth a lot of points.
.
Still a few players to leave yet and only then will NA and NC plan be known. Personally I'm behind JR more than Hooper purely because of the standard of teams they've both been playing against.

Tubbystubb says...
8:40am Tue 29 May 12

It seems a lot of money but will seem like small change if JR delivers the goals in the prem.
Off track somewhat, it seems like the skunts have got away with it again, it's being reported on the news website that if they start next season still in administration they will NOT face another points deduction.
Seems a bit unfair when you think of Bournemouth and Leeds, each having double points deductions a few years back.

Agree, the more "established proven" PL players come with big wage demands, egos to match and spend half the time injured unable to take the challenge. This kind of player upsets the dressing room too. If we can get Roddy, it could be a great investment, future England player and could be sold for 5 times the fee we paid for him, at worst you would only loose a little. Look at QPR, they bought any man desperate for the final pay-off and only just stayed up. This is a big step up and we will still need to find another 3 players. Hooper will be player in a one league team, able to score at will, but inside will always know the SPL is folly.

We were never going to go for established but older PL players. Cortese wants to build a team with a recognizable style. The intention is to seamlessly move kids from the academy into the first team. It may seem risky to some, but I can't see him panicking and changing his plan just because we've got to the PL early. This was mentioned when they announced the possibility of setting up academies abroad. He wants to increase our profile overseas and perhaps find promising youngsters and train them to our style. Interesting and exciting times.

Hey big fella, when are you going to get rid off the clown circus manager? I am still shocked he was voted the top Championship manager, what a laugh. This would be a great signing .. young, english, committed, good attitude. Sir Ricky wont be here forever, and you cant expect him to play all games all competitions for the next few years.

Jay Rod is a different player ..l he can run with the ball, attack defenders and has a few little tricks.

No way would I waste time and money on certain "prem players" with big names, big egos etc. We want players on the way up .. not the way out.

7m is fine. Carrol 35m? Downing 20m etc etc ... Once Jay Rod settles into the Saints and into the Prem he will show his worth and he can go on to be worth more then 7m.

Welcome to a quality football club Jay.

yeh great forward attack but its not strikers we need,,, its a right winger, holding midifeld player, centre half and a keeper... £7m for JR is stupid... If we do sign him then surely that will mean Guly is lined up for a move away !? there is no way he will get a game up front and he is no where near good enough to play in midfield in the prem with the midfielders we have at moment.. Also I am assuming that NA is thinking on a formation where Lee and Lambert can play deeper together and create more from midifeld.... if not then AOC going and JR coming in for a Net income of £3M is going to seem crazy...

£7m is a pretty decent price for a future England player (as opposed to a has been like De Foe). He can play striker or right wing and I suspect it is the latter role that he would adopt at Saints if he comes. Everton and WHU have also been making enquiries. Sunderland too I hear.

if he ever puts on an england shirt then by then we would have sold him... the England set-up is tainted... players would be "advised" to "go to a bigger club" to cement a place in the england set-up. You all know how it works.... its why AOC left and if we do spend £7m on him then it will be the reason he leaves in 18-24 months, hopefully for a profit.

Should be a good signing. He's young, and should want to prove himself at a higher level again. Looking at this video of his goals, he seems to be able to strike the ball extremely well, and can take players on, which I feel needed adding to our team (similar to Lee's directness).

Those complaining about the price, that's what English footballers cost nowadays. Some people complain about the high number of foreigners coming over to play, but they cost as little as a League 1 up and coming English player costs. English players clearly have over-inflated price tags.

Spot on - rather more fairness and equality would be in order in this world. I think everyone should have an umbrella on rainy days, but more equality is needed not just in financial terms, but in every way.

I recall my last speech to the New Forest WI......

"I have a dream. A world where the beauty gap is closed and all men will look like Bill Wyman; a world where all men can feel proud, even on a nudist beach.

"A world where everyone is virtuous and even Gary Glitter can run the Save the Children Foundation. A world where the talent gap is closed and even Danny de Vito - or me -can be Saints No9 next season.

"I have a dream. A world where everyone is the same colour, size, sex and class and everyone has the same information, even though it would mean no-one would get pregnant any more and we'd have nothing to talk about.

"I have a dream where we are all like chess pieces and the kings and the pawns all get put back in the same box.

"I have a dream, where..."

Unfortunately, at this point, the WI Branch Chair, my Auntie Elspeth, butted in told me I had to go.

You're right - the dream will never happen. I didn't even get a cup of tea and a bun for my noble efforts.

A lot of money for an unproven player at Premier League level and only 1 year letf on his contract. £4m would be a fair amount. I'd be a bit gutted to see Chappers go tho - still think he's agot a lot to give at the top level. Would rather see Barnard go instead.

New players I think we could realistically get for new season:
Fabio on loan from United
Keiran Richardson from Sunderland who wants out,
Lukuka loan from Chelsea (they paid £18m for him and want to loan him out especially after signing Hazard & The Hulk),
Owen on a free would be a kind of Connelly replacement in my opinion & would work well with Lambert (PLUS guaranteed 15 goals),
Phillips from Blackpool (maybe Puncheon going the other way) has the pace we desperately need,
Jarvis from Wolves (maybe - if the Phillips deal doesn't come off),
Curtis Davis from Birmingham as backup for Fonte and Hosiveld,
finally that Michu character who sounds good but don't know much about him.

"BOOM!!! it will all crash down" is probably relating to what will happen to Fratton Park as it makes way for the new LIdl, Aldi, Costcutter, Bargain Booze, Bright House etc superstore.

That said I supose the Portsmouth Supporters Trust may have a chance. Apparently they have managed to raise £7.50, some cans of Special Brew, a couple of Scotch eggs and some Sports World 3/4 length shorts. The administrators are concerned that this offer seriously overvalues the club.

In an informal situation, like what we have on here its (ha ha ha) ok to omit the apostrophe in the case of its, however, if you like to insert make sure you insert into the right location. RD was a great great centre forward at the height of his powers - golden boot for two years if I remember correct - the mad finances of current PL footy would mean he would have likely played elsewhere (Man City/ Chelsea etc) if he were around now and undoubtedly he would retire a very rich man! Great player - great memories. If Jay Rodriguez is half as effective in the next couple of years he will be worth the money.

I have real worries spending £7m on Rodriguez; I ve always felt if you are looking to cut it in the top flight, you dont get your merchandise from clubs like Burnley. We dont need to break the bank pre-season. The players we have should be given a chance to prove themselves or not in the top flight. I think this season should be about consolidation of our premier league position, and not trying to spend our way into europe. If we need to realy strenghten, the January transfer window would give us a good opportunity to do so, and by then we would have a better idea of whats needed. I hope JR is worth the £7m, but personally if I was to be spending big money now it would be more on our defence, and rep goalkeeper than up front.

This is going to be a GREAT signing imo.
Jay-Rod has everything as a striker, he can play up front on his own or in a 4-4-2. He can play out wide, he is good in a air (I believe he out jumped Jos up at there place for their goal) and is quite quick for a tall man.
.
I am also pleased that Nicola is attempting to get the deal done EARLY in that other PL teams e.g. Toon and Everton may have come in later in the Transfer Window when they have got their higher priority targets sorted.

2. Can't believe Poopey are allowed to stay in admin, and not have any further points removed. Shambles.
3. Looked on the Poopey News site, and pi$$ed myself laughing at their "Pompey ace makes England squad" headline. Look at the article. What do I see? Yep, AOC...Superb bit of journalism there then! At Saints since pre-pubes? I'd make him a Saint based on that!

Give them permission to pass your contact details onto others in your area, that wont breach DP. Although I wouldn't be surprised if in this modern day of 'can't be bothered' they can't be bothered.

If it is true that Jay is on the way to The Saints 7 million is shear speculation as Saints do not disclose fees paid. There is no way in this world Nicola would pay 7 million for a player in the last year of his contract. According to a sauce at Sky he was seen at Southampton Airport yesterday.

May list of players in would include: The following
Goal keeper Matt Gilks or England third choice keeper Buckland who is one for the future. Curtis Davis, Steven Davies central Midfield. Snodgrass from Leeds could be quite cheap in last year on contract. Also Nigel was looking at Ince and saw him score a great goal at Wembley. I still do have my reservations about the full back positions? Can some not get that Pompy Phil and Fat Ford worker blocked from this site they took the biggest load of fish manure. Whereabouts in Southampton are you and what line of work are you in? I'm thinking of hilarious (ie not hilarious) puns based on famous Robins. For example, if you work as a driver in a large fleet of Transits, you could be Rob In Van Thirty.

Similarly, if you live in somehwhere quite 'street' (I'm thinking maybe Shirley or somewhere?) you could be Rob In (The) Hood.

Hey St Retford...

Hasn't Seed borrowed that line - ie "Have you ever taken a 9 incher up the jacksy without lubrication?" - from a popular song?

I think it's either in Chris de Burgh's 'Lady in Red' - or Jessica Simpson's 'Take my breath away'.

Here's my two penneth on JR. When Swansea went up they bought the Championship's (note the apostrophe) top scorer in Danny Graham and he proved himself in the top division. If Rickie wasn't already playing for us would any of you guys have objected had we signed him now, the Championship's top scorer? You could argue that having all of Lambert, Rodriguez and Sharp, who were I think the top three scorers in the division, we are spreading the risk. We only need two of them to be a success in the Premier League! Buying Vaz Te to play wide right would give us a clean sweep of Championship top scorers ...

The money is all relative. If we have £40M coming in, and are otherwise solvent, why wouldn't we pay £7M for a proven goalscorer? Burnley can do the maths. I still think Barnard will go the other way though...

Actually the billythesaint is right as it's is reserved for possessive use whilst its is used as an abbreviation for it is. I'd still like Hooper as he appears a real handful. Owen? Nah!! But Philips and Ince would be great. How much have we got to spend though??

We dont need to break the bank pre-season. The players we have should be given a chance to prove themselves or not in the top flight. I think this season should be about consolidation of our premier league position, and not trying to spend our way into europe. If we need to realy strenghten, the January transfer window would give us a good opportunity to do so, and by then we would have a better idea of whats needed. I hope JR is worth the £7m, but personally if I was to be spending big money now it would be more on our defence, and rep goalkeeper than up front.
Not sure if I agree with you here. We are not trying to spend our way into Europe, we are spending to survive with the big boys. 2nd fav's to go down my ar*e, 4th bottom will do me. Guly and Barny may not be good enough for the prem imo. The games when RL was out last season we def struggled, we cannot afford to get left behind, as we have less matches to get it right. JR will be a gr8 signing. All our strikers are not known in the prem, they have no ego's to uphold, and will be a threat to anyone.

The point some people are missing about who we should buy is not only is a player like this hungrier and likely to get better but unlike the likes of defoe he is an investment. After a few years we could sell him on for twice what we pay. Defoe and his ilk would just be dead money in wages and sell on.

Rumour has it that the don is ambitious and aiming for champions league, time plan unknown. Pressure is on adders and he needs to be ruthless with the cull and astute with new signings. Players have been to Vegas and reaped the fruits of their success, now down to the nitty gritty. Bus has arrived at premier league, those who can't catch it for next journey must move on. Back to back promotions can be easily forgotten when the going gets tough and what Adkins does this summer sets the foundation for the new season.

Back to back promotions can be easily forgotten when the going gets tough and what Adkins does this summer sets the foundation for the new season.
What's Les Reed do then? I doubt transfer activity will be Nigels biggest strength. More motivation and getting a tight knit bonded squad functioning as a team and playing great football.

I think superb service from Terry Paine had something to do with it. Now there WAS a good crosser of the ball
a good crosser of the ball, terry was one of the best, and very difficult to obtain these days.
rickie would thrive on one
Yes top top player - best and most accurate crosser of the ball I have seen and with a serious football - not one of those lightweight balls they use these days!

Dave Blake is still the man to go for.Lacks a bit of pace, but is pure quality and we can get him on a free.

Not trying to be negative but if things don't start well it won't be les that is under pressure.
I hope Adkins is putting the don under pressure to get the signings in ASAP to allow them as much time as possible to gel with squad. Equally get rid of dead wood to free up funds. I know there are deals to be done but is it worth waiting till last minute to grab a bargain when you can get deals done now and have a full pre-season together. When making cement do you chuck in sand in last, give it a few spins then chuck out?

But if this story is right then surely that's exactly what Nigel's doing? I think we're all aware that Nicola is a very ambitious man and I wouldn't have it any other way, but equally I'm very sure that Nigel will surprise quite a few people.

I only hope he's had time for a decent holiday because I suspect he will be the hardest working man in football this season.

Fair comment but is another striker a priority? Goal keeper to keep kelvin on his toes? No nonsense midfielder? Does any one believe Hammond to be a premier league player? I would have liked to have seen a few players make way by now as there are IMO some obvious ones that are not good enough. Worst job I'm sure but you can't carry any one and I'm sure they wouldn't want to be carried.

Who knows who they're negotiating for and with. I'm sure they don't do one at a time! Maybe this one came to a conclusion quicker.

I imagine they want to sign before selling and the trouble is so does the club they're buying from. It always ends up like a house chain.

Billy sharp. If we signed him start of jan transfer window and paid that little extra he could have been match fit quicker? Might have scored more goals?may not have had to rely on tad as much, given him time to adjust and he may have not got injured Might have beaten Leicester? May have won the league? There is a thing called false economy.

So, I thought I would come over all grammar Nazi on you all.

Seed, you missed one in "Nigel's".

GHK, why the unnecessary question mark?

Finally, Retford, if you use the first conditional, you should separate the clauses with a comma.

Now, where were we? Oh yes, imo, the clear out has saved a bit of money and signing JR is a good start, but what we really need is to get rid of all the grammar Nazis and clear the way for signing a box-to-box, hard-tackling, goal-scoring, motivational spell checker.

Precisely. You can bet your bottom dollar (whatever that is) that this is merely the tip of a very big iceberg of signings we're trying to conclude. You can probably also bet that the most important signings we make will be players that most of us haven't heard of.

This will be a great signing that shows we don't intend on being in a relegation battle this season.

This guy was the 2nd best striker in the championship last season.

I dont agree with this we need to sign a premier league standard player stuff. Apart from the top 6 the rest of the league is pretty poor and with our current squad we will more than compete with the likes of Wigan, West Brom, Villa, Liverpool, Norwich and Swansea

Blimey! (He said, referring to Pete the Phantom's post above.) Would you be the kid he's just converted at the grocery shop?

Pete, fine work. It's good to see the missionary zeal in 'the colonies' (please excuse that one all Commonwealth Saints) is still alive and well.

Sydney, I tend to agree. However, I do think we need one wise 'been there and done it' captain. No disrespect intended to Hammond (or Davis) but there is still a worst case scenario in which we have a bad run and the younger ones start to feel the pressure. If their heads drop, they will need a Chris Marsdenesque character in the dressing room to pick them up. I'm thinking of someone like Barry or Parker but realise neither of those are likely to make the switch and I can't think who would be available.

There's certainly some disagreement on here about this prospective signing, but my view on the matter is crystal clear.

If Jay flops then gambling this extortionate amount of money on a player with no Prem experience is a disgraceful waste of resources, especially when rip-off ticket prices are being charged. Cortese and Adkins should apologise to fans and depart.

If, however, he's a success then praise should be heaped upon the management team for spotting and investing in such budding talent before the player has matured into a completely unaffordable star - and fans should duly hail our stadium prices the best buy in world football.
