Midfield target could join Saints for free

Steven Davis Steven Davis

SAINTS could snap up midfield target Steven Davis on a free transfer, if the Rangers star walks out of Ibrox this week.

The 27-year-old is one of a number of players said to be considering quitting the troubled Glasgow giants.

Steven Naismith and Steven Whittaker have already lodged objections to their contracts being transferred to the ‘newco’ Rangers, after the former company was consigned to liquidation.

Naismith and Whittaker, who have been joined by teammates Sone Aluko and Rhys McCabe, now claim they are free agents.

And Davis, who Saints are keen to bring to St Mary’s this summer, could be about to join the exodus.

The Northern Ireland international has a release clause of about £1.6m in his contract.

That was inserted when he accepted a 75 per cent wage cut following the club’s descent into administration, in order to help prevent job losses at the club.

But the Rangers skipper is now said to be seriously considering following Naismith and Whittaker out of the door.

See today's Southern Daily Echo for full story.

Good. I think we're all ready for the next signing.

be decent squad addition (better than hammond) but we need better quality if we are going to remain in the league.

Go get him Saints just what we need with experience at this level

Not the first time Steve Davis has screwed the blue to finish nicely on a red etc...

Is he any good? I literally never watch Scottish football.

Either your joking or you're confused over what consitutes 'experience at this level'. Rangers do not qualify for this statement so you must be (worryingly) talking about his Villa and Fulham days?

Red&WhiteStripes says...

He'd be a terrific signing for us, that's for sure but unfortunately this could spell disaster for Saints as it is sure to alert some of the other teams to his availability. I think Martin O'Neil signed him to Villa, so imagine Sunderland would be interested too.

SO50 Saint says...

Indeed I am talking about Villa and Fulham days and he is a good player. Always stands out when watching him play for Rangers aswell. One we wouldn't have to break the bank for either.

I don't know much about the player but it's good that we are seeking players who may be high quality for a moderate price.

Too early to say - but the mess that Rangers are in is regrettable and we all know what the vultures/agents are like when they sniff trouble. Been there done that. Sadly it's going to happen more and more in the next few years.

Apart from Celtic and Rangers the only team I've ever heard of up there is Partick Thistle Nil.

The best thing about Scottish football is the names of the teams and trying to work out where in Scotland they play their home matches. I mean, where exactly IS Albion?

I quite like Ayr. Do you remember back in 1998 when they released 'Moon Safari'? Of course you do - literally EVERYONE had that album. For the next five years it was practically the law to play it whenever a sophisticated gentleman was 'entertaining a lady'.

Personally, though, I prefered their early stuff. 'Le Soliel Est Pres De Moi', for instance, is one of the 10 best electronic French records ever made.

I think the new owner has threatened to sue any club taking on these players as well as the players leaving. I'm sure Cortese will look at the contract in detail to see whether the owner has any case. If not then this would be a good signing I reckon.

Not into music at all I'm afraid. Might be down to an experience as a kid. I spent three weeks pocket money on an Audio Cleaning tape, rushed home and found there was absolutely fcuk all sound on it. Once bitten mate.

You as well! I moved onto 'CD's' only to screwed over by a lense cleaning CD from HMV. I'm now very happy with digital downloads and wonder why I could buy them 20 years ago.

I often think the entire music industry is one giant confidence trick. It comodifies 'cool' and/or 'vulnerability' and sells it to an adoring public. To quote Hunter S Thompson: "The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side."

That said, it does, on occasion produce a CHOON.

According to Google Maps, just outside Glasgow, near Airdrie.

About an hour on the train from Edinburgh - might give it a go at some point, can't be that much worse than watching Hearts vs Hibs, surely?

According to this - the essential Scottish football fan's bible no less:

http://www.scottishf
ootballleague.com/cl
ub/albion-rovers/

It's just below Airdire United and just above Alloa Athletic in next season's Scottish Second Division. So, yes, (in Retford speak) it is LITERALLY very near Airdrie.

I love the way this site describes the Scottish Football League as 'the home of REAL football'.

I suppose that's a bit like describing Hampton Court as the home of REAL tennis.

Prehaps If you read my comments about am month ago I could have told you that we would be getting Davis for Nothing. Davis has refused to join the Rangers Newco. I would not be at all surprised if Alan Mcgreggor the Scotland goal keeper comes as well. He has refused to join the Newco. Davis is a great player and has played in both the Premier league and in Champion league. Bye Bye Hammond.
