Davis signs on at Saints Davis signs on at Saints

Steven Davis has become the latest player to put the Rangers saga behind him by signing a three-year deal at Southampton.

The 27-year-old was captain of the beleaguered Scottish side but left after rejecting a transfer to the newco club.

Davis follows the likes of Kyle Lafferty and Steven Whittaker out of the club and has joined newly-promoted Saints until 2015.

The move marks Davis’ return to the Barclays Premier League, where he played for both Aston Villa and Fulham.

The central midfielder left the latter for Rangers in 2008 after an initial loan and went on to win the 2010 Scottish Players' Player of the Year and captain the Ibrox club.

Northern Ireland skipper Davis becomes Saints’ second signing since promotion back to the top flight, following Jay Rodriguez’s £6million move from Burnley.

Great signing. well done NA. after reading about that 'Newco' at Rangers a few days ago, the owners said they would seek compensation from any club who signs any of their players. but first they must survive on the 10th July, looking at the news up there, they got no chance of that, sorry Rangers he is a Saints player now.

You have admire Mr Cortese and Nigel Atkins for way we sign players, no great speculation just deal done, announcement and move on to the next target.

Fantastic piece of business by Nicola, I assume this is a free as he refused to transfer his contract to Newco, now, just prise Butland away from Birmingham, tie up the Buttner deal, and get in a Midfielder to compliment Jack and Morgan, and 3 points guaranteed against City on the 17th.

I said weeks ago that we should go for Steven Davis. Being based in Scotland I am of the view he was Rangers best player for the past three seasons. Where does this leave Hammond! Once again Saints are quietly doing things behind the scenes. Before Rangers were liquidated, the Daily Record said we would have to pay two million for him. We have saved some cash which is always a good thing. I noted today that Spurs are bidding 7 million for Butland. However I know a very good goal keeper who is available for nothing his name is Alan McGregor the Scotland keeper who like Davis refused to sign for the Newco . He would be a good bit of business.

He is no fool. Nice that he gives the standard "impressed" line, reminds me of Real Madrid with their "I always wanted to play for" line.

“I am really disappointed to see Davis leave as he’s no doubt a massive Rangers fan who played whole-heartedly for our club. He is a box-to-box midfielder full of energy and never tires, he plays to the  final whistle and is involved in absolutely everything. I’m not just saying that at an SPL level, I have no doubt whatsoever that he will do the same in the English Premier League.

Not only is he dynamic going forward and opens up a lot of options in attack, he will be one of the rare forward minded players you’ll see helping out defensively. I can say as somebody who watches the Premier League on a regular basis that he’s every bit as good as the midfielders in the league.

I don’t need to say much more about Steven Davis because I can guarantee that he will become a very respected player at Southampton and is more than capable of being a top player in the Premier League, I personally wish him nothing but the best. He did a lot for Rangers in his time and he clearly loves the club. I hope he grows to be just as much of an important player at Southampton.

Going by what others say, he should turn out to be a good signing and, imo, fills the post we have, more than any other, desperately needed to fill.

It's that 'box-to-box' bit. With due respect to Dean H., I think he may have found his level. I'm sure he'll have the chance to see if he can step up and I hope he can but SD has played at this level and is in the prime of his career.

btw, is it still a 'bus'? A bus seems so last season. Do we still welcome the new boys onto 'the bus'? Or, now we're in the Prem, is it a luxery, air-con, double-decker coach complete with built-in personal TV screens and all that jazz?

Just been on the Echo Saints Women's Forum and concensus is this is a good signing, but they're still looking for a more Beckhamesque arrival.

Lots of heated discussion about speculative relationship issues in the squad and a real row about what colour the seat cushions should be if they were provided a la Wimbledon at St Marys.

Won't go on there again as the stories seem to start days before the event in question is raised and take a tortuously roundabout route before the point is reached.

'Itchenbabe' has actually threatened 'Botoxbabs' with physical violence over an argument about fat women who wear mini skirts - and 'Idagivejosearide' says posters shouldn't come on the site when they've got the painters in.

Makes our forum seem tame.

not a hard man, but doesn't get fouled that often Rangers games. Except old firm games, when he was the first target for every Celtic player to make sure he knew who was playing, no greater tribute.
I am a Rangers fan and I can tell you he will slot in perfectly. His passing abiblity is tremendous over short and one-two's he will make any of our forwards look better and score more goals.

Rangers were liquidated so all employment contracts terminate at that time. I'm not sure on what grounds Newco will be able to ask for compensation for any player who walked away. Having said that football does seem to have it's own rules.

You have to go on the Poopey News site and read how sad and defeated they are becoming. When we were in the mire they took the michael at every oppurtunity, their problem has gone on for so long it seems rude to continue to kick them. I'm now thinking we pretty much have are first team. with attacking players like ...
Lambert. rod. sharp, lee. guly

And midfielders like

Spiderman, Hammond, chaplow, lallana, davies, cork,

Defenders

Jos. fonte, frazer, fox butner.

All we need now really is a RB and a few subs ... ( GK, CB )
Take my hat off to NA, NC and the backroom staff done a great job to get some great deals keeping the wage budget down as well. Looking bright in Red and white.

Some harsh comments on Hammond, he did well last season and I'm sure will make the best of the opportunities he gets in the future. Davis will no doubt expect to start alongside Schneiderlin, Cork and Lallana but we need experience behind them like Hammond and Chaplow.

Just had a look at season ticket sales and so far we have sold out all of Block 3 where I will be singing from, nearly all the premium seats in Itchen centre have gone also. Still plenty available in the Northam though. Here is a list of sales so far......
Blocks 1/2, seats 276, 188 available.
Block 3, seats 827, 0 available.
Block 4, seats 818, 321 available.
Block 5, seats 915, 44 available.
Block 6, seats 780, 5 available.
Block 7, seats 636, 0 available.
Block 8, seats 715, 13 available.
Block 9, seats 878, 28 available.
Block 10, seats 965, 313 available.
Block 11, seats 827, 527 available.
Block 12, seats 348, 287 available.
Block 13, seats 600, 515 available.
Block 14, seats 293, 266 available.
Block 15, seats 734, 601 available.
Block 16, seats 638, 325 available.
Bloody website has crashed, will continue later with the list if folks are interested.

Was wondering with all the different pricing and seating arrangements this season at St Mary's, will it affect the acoustics? I know there are large sections in the Northam that are always vocal during games and also its very loud on the other side of the away fans, which is where I like to sit. But what about the rest of the ground, little pockets of noise isn't good enough! The Kingsland is notoriously quiet and the Chapel is not much better.
It will be interesting to see/hear when the season kicks off, Cant wait!!!

My brother in law is a chef and Kelvin Davies was in the restaurant he works in last week. One of the other chefs he works with is a Saints fan ( brother in law is a Gooner...shame) and he got talking to KD and asked if he knew any players Saints might be signing. KD said there is talk of 5 new signings. He tried to get some names from him but KD said he couldn't say as the whole squad have been sworn to secrecy. Buttner and Davis will make 3 so far, so who's the next 2? or will it be 6 new signings as JRod had already signed???
Good source even though he's a Gooner

ML,NC, and NA I think adds up to 3 reasons? Ricky fired the goals, NC persuaded ML, and NC pursuaded NA too. So if up your being picky, NC is THE reason.

I think butland will want first team football, how long will he wait for KD to step aside or do we think he is a better keeper than KD. It will be interesting to see if we can afford him and if he is prepared to come to a newly promoted club

Good morning all.
I know there is great debate currently about who comes and who goes and we generally are in a post season promotion afterglow.
I feel it is at this time we should give a thought for others, who are less fortunate than ourselves.
They feel that they have been badly treated by everybody.

Poeple told them that they had to pay their bills.
They had 10 points deducted, without any consideration at all.
They have had to get rid of players and staff.
On the pitch they felt to have had loads of bad luck.
Cr-p referees!
Then relegation.

Luckily some of this was offset by the FILL THE PARK initiative which was "masterminded" by the "best fans in the South"

Saints fans are renown for their charitable consideration of others.
i.e. We even gave them 2 points to help them, at risk of our own promotion push.

Keep up the good work saints supporters.

ALWAYS REMEMBER ABOUT THOSE LESS FORTUNATE.

Confucious,

Can we have an update on the AUNTIE ELSPETH TUNNEL.
I would like to know how you are coping with the difficulties of its positioning, relative to the latest knowledge on the ticket sales and the continuing monsoon.
I am concerned that there is the possibility that you may well surface and find that all of the seats have gone.(Could tarnish your image a tad, me thinks.)
I would also like to know whether you know the whereabouts of Alicescat as he seems to have gone missing.
A "Source"has suggested that you may well have sent him down to investigate, as there are reports of an infestation of rats near the ground.
Im not sure if the tunnel scheme is still top secret, anyway I wont tell anyone.

I need some of this to cheer me up, laters.
Don't go there. After posting there yesterday I came in for a fierce attack for being a 'male chauvinist pig'. Fortunately, I got myself off the hook by explaining that when I was working in the Middle East I defied the backward local custom whereby women always have to walk behind the men. To make a statement on women's rights, I always ensured my wife walked in front of me!

Of course, as I did not wish to cloud the issue, I made no mention of the fact that there were a lot of land mines about at the time.

Safe with me! Mate.
The tunnel is behind schedule unfortunately. One night last month I dreamt I was an otter and afterwards I could not be absolutely certain that in fact I am not real, but just part of a dream than an otter is having. Ever since I've been spending a huge amount of time trying to track someone down who can nail this problem, but with no success.

I have not seen Alicescat, but coincidentally this week I am looking after Chairman Meow, my Uncle Wei's cat this week.

Just had a look at season ticket sales and so far we have sold out all of Block 3 where I will be singing from, nearly all the premium seats in Itchen centre have gone also. Still plenty available in the Northam though. Here is a list of sales so far......

Unless I had a spot of finger trouble with a calculator I made it that 22,632 seats had been sold at the time of your check. So I don't think that is too bad at all.I would be surprised if by the end of the period that the season tickets can be purchased, the number will be easiy 25,000. Happy Days!!!

It's good to see some signings this early, means they get pre season to bed in. So many signings are late in the window, suppose it's like selling a house you get a chain that all have to complete at once.

The Saints team that walks out against city will be very different to the team that we last saw in the Championship.

There are new foundations being laid and this is undoubtedly a very good signing.

The more I look at that pack of forwards we have, plus the ever strengthening midfield group, the more I think we will be a right handful for all the teams in the premier.

If you were a player - and you saw the squad we have built - and you knew about the financial and management set up at this club - and the ambition we have - you would be thinking that Southampton is definitley the place to be.

This transfer will send out another strong message in teh world of football. Not just here but abroad.

I genuinely believe we will harvest a serious number of points from our first five games.

It will be a serious announcement of our arrival.

Its going to be soooo cool !!

I'm in broad agreement, but must spring to the defence of one of the world's greatest ever sports - the women's beach volleyball.

Having said that, I have written to the BBC at this early stage to ask them to improve their coverage at this year's Olympics.

This stunning sport can only be best appreciated if they employ more low camera angles from behind the servers/receivers rather than centrally across the net. We also need far more slow motion replays, particularly when the Australian girls are involved.

I appreciate this sport does have its' knockers, but the more the merrier as far as I am concerned.

Sorry but it does not tell you anything. EPL requires a certain number to be available for away fans and a certain number for match day sales. Not sure why the stat is important anyway. We are going to pretty much sell out most games this season.
