Southampton considering £8m deal for Wilfried Zaha and Nathaniel Clyne
6:10am Thursday 12th July 2012 in Sport
By Adam Leitch, Chief Sports Writer
Wilfried Zaha, right, battles with Saints' Frazer Richardson last season
Saints are considering a formal bid for Crystal Palace pair Wilfried Zaha and Nathaniel Clyne.
The Daily Echo understands that the talented youngsters could be the subject of an £8m joint offer from Saints.
Palace, though, will try and get even more for their hottest stars.
Zaha and Clyne fit the Saints transfer mould perfectly – talented, young, British players who won’t command big wages.
They would also complete more of the Saints jigsaw as Nigel Adkins looks to recruit a pacy winger and a right back ready for the start of the Premier League campaign.
Palace are already resigned to losing Clyne with the 21-year-old defender out of contract.
Though Clyne’s deal is expiring, Palace are still attempting to agree a fee directly with clubs, rather than lose him to a compensation fee set by a tribunal.
Although the Eagles are thought to value Clyne at about £5m, the likelihood is they will have to accept nearer £2m.
His signing would be a major coup for Saints if they could land him with Manchester United, Newcastle, Reading, Fulham and West Ham also interested.
A £2m valuation of Clyne would fit perfectly into an £8m joint bid from Saints with 19-year-old livewire Zaha rated at about £6m.
Palace are keen to hold on to Zaha but, in the face of such a big bid, may be forced to let him move on to the top flight.
Zaha was born in the Ivory Coast but moved to London as a child and, like Clyne, has come through the ranks at Palace.
He is still very much a raw and precocious talent, but has blistering pace out wide and has already racked up 81 appearances for Palace.
Like Clyne, he has reached England under-21 level.
He was named Football League Young Player of the Year last season.
Palace chairman Steve Parish has already stated his desire to get a move for Clyne sorted out and said: “There is a bit of action in the background and we know there is a lot of interest.
“It is just about sorting out who it is best to go to and who will put the right money on the table. We’re all working to get an outcome.
“Clubs don’t want to go down the tribunal route.
“It is a game of cat and mouse on the fee — we’ve just got to let that play out.”

These were all reported by the papers long before Saints confirmed the deals. The OS is just marketing to get people to buy tickets. It's fine for what it is but don't think its ever going to tell you anything interesting!!!

People questioning NA and NC when all they have done is deliver exactly what we have wanted, time and again, and earlier than in "the plan"!!
There is nothing wrong with the way we do business, it is behind closed doors, not fuelling papers or bowing to agents, and ensuring the good name of Southampton FC is not dragged through the mud like it is with so many other clubs.
I love Saints as much as the next man, and I trust the management team to be doing the right things, and that they will be done in the best possible time frame.

In the last three years NC has taken a broken club from the brink of extinction in last place in League 1 to being debt-free in the Premier League, while investing millions in our training facilities, winning a cup at Wembley and setting out our brand as purveyors of passing football featuring exciting, young, largely English talent. Now just what in that makes you think he has the first idea what he's doing?

Our first goal was conceded when Lundekvam was caught out playing with a Rubik Cube in the penalty area. Then Beattie scored our first when Shay Given slipped and his willy popped out to be seen momentarily on live television. That was also the game when Griffit scored from an offside position but the linesman said he didn't see it as he looked down at that moment thinking he could see a hedgehog on the pitch.
A truly amazing match - and I had a 2p accumulator spot bet at 498 billion to 1 on all these things happening! After the first two incidents, I just couldn't believe it when that linesman did that.
Anyhow, I've been a season ticket holder ever since and three of the four I buy are left empty so I have lots of space and don't have to worry about sitting next to a really fat bloke or somebody a bit smelly and poor.

Back to the real issue of the day, I, as a non-season-ticket holder of many years' standing, just want to put on record how delighted I am that this post will not be read by any of those God-awful season-ticket holder types. Bad eggs the lot of them.
In fact, I'm going to write to NC and insist he has them all banned from home and away matches.
Alas, rumour has it he's up to his neck in pandering to them. So, I'm not really expecting him to take my letters as seriously as he takes those written by Confucious.

They have made some incredible signings to do this.
They have also done this outside of the media spotlight. Ignor all the speculators,
they are only there to sell papers.

It astonishes me how many football managers we have on here offering there vast experience of transfer negotiations.
Transfers will take time,it has to be done right.

In fact, I'm going to write to NC and insist he has them all banned from home and away matches.
Alas, rumour has it he's up to his neck in pandering to them. So, I'm not really expecting him to take my letters as seriously as he takes those written by Confucious.

Nonetheless, your non season ticket holder opinion is entitled to a hearing. In fact I think the Echo should allocate at least one hour every afternoon as an 'open window' for non season ticket holder postings.
To facilitate status recognition these should be displayed in small 10 point type. Season ticket holder postings can be in 25 point and quadruple ticket holder postings in 50 point CAPS. (plus special dispensation for RedArmy1 postings).
Unfortunately, some of the season ticket holders on here have an overly snobby attitude to the less fortunate. But as you can see from this post, the ever-inclusive Confucious will always stand up for the riff raff and the great unwashed.

Used to listen to Saints down at the Dell whilst standing on my cross-bar looking over the wall in Northlands Road as Butch White destroyed someone's wicket and hearing the cheers as George O'Brien blasted another "unstoppable" past some nervy keeper.
These days from the bridge it's so different with the planes flying low as those on board strain to see Ricky complete another hat-trick. (Best seen from the Islander going to Alderney I'm told).
Ah, the Premiership, the Promised Land, the smell of the crowd, the Dagenham Girl Pipers, the rattle of the worry beads, the crumpled programme, awful lager at half-time, the Albion Band, the foul mouthed Docker, Match of the Day, Kenneth Wolstenholme, Is this all a dream? The Buttner deal should have been confirmed by now are we to believe that NC has now cancelled the deal? Im sorry but I am beginning to get irritated by the holier than thou approach to signings adopted by NC it seems that if there is even something slightly untoward with a deal he scraps it and moves onto another target which may or more likely will not happen. ramptonfromsouthamptI don't think there is a grudge involved. Unfortunately NC heads a public business and will always attract criticism if things go wrong. The Buttner deal does look like a fiasco which could have been avoided and even if it does go through in a weeks time it still is going to look extremely messy. I do think in a business of this kind PR is of great value and the more NC refuses to comment on transfers the more flack he will attract. Its that simple.Other clubs indeed the great majority are far more forthcoming on their deals and the benefit lies in keeping supporters happy and informed.

I'm sorry but that is extremely irritating and to be frank they would do better to adopt a similar approach to most clubs and keep the media informed which they refuse to do.Whether or not transfers are in the public domain makes little difference in practice as the selling club will more often than not reveal Saints dealings anyway. In short the policy doesnt work period.

that is, if you support your club you understand that not everything goes according to plan and so it is better not to raise the hopes of us by telling us something that might not go according to plan !
Buutner deal so far has all been done by the newspapers who have made a right hash of it bt announcing the deal was done, when it wasn't. You know it wasn't because it wasn't on the OS!
The Steve Davis deal is done because it was on the OS!
Rangers are asking for compensation, not just from us, but from every club who have purchased one of their ex-players.
Fatty has been banging on about Adomah for ages, he is right, he is good. how do we know that Saints have not enquired? Because the Echo haven't said it???
Did we know about Buttner before? no? did the Echo?
By the way my opinion counts as I am an STH now.(well I will be when it arrives!)

It is you who should do some homework.
Rangers players have been sold now to 7 different clubs, the Scottish FA have said that they expected the response from Rangers and have acted accordingly.
Buttner's club didn't know about a 3rd party so how would Saints have known?
Your arrogance is astounding, but then you are an international financier and I expect you have minions to do the thinking for you at your business, you certainly have absolutely no idea how badly you rub people up the wrong way!

As for Hargreaves I was only trying to state it may be usefull having an experienced player who can keep the ball and pick a pass. I understand that he may be past it a little and injury prone plus he may be placed a pay while play contract. But having a ex england player may put a bit of confidence to the young lads.
I'm afraid I dont know who Jack Hargreaves is. Sorry lol.

Of course, it's healthy to have a pecking order in all walks of life. Great democrats such as myself believe everyone should start life even - whilst only the despotic Trots believe everyone should finish even.
But as you can see from this post, the ever-inclusive Confucious will always stand up for the riff raff and the great unwashed.
of course i realise that all you S.T. holders will probably ignore this post anyway
i had no doubt that our disadvantage would not be held against us and can now post as an equal to S.T. holders and have my posts read understood and thrown out exactly the same as anyones

I bet he and Jack had many a fine time together dangling their tempting rods at the passing trout along the banks of the Avon.
BTW, 'fly fishing'. Never got that, does it involve airplanes hovering above rivers? And 'coarse fishing', is that when you sit all day on the river bank, getting soaked and failing to catch anything more than a cold and feel it gives you the right to swear and curse the whole time?
