Vitesse Arnhem expect Saints target Alexander Buttner to leave this summer
8:00am Tuesday 17th July 2012 in Sport

Alexander Buttner
Alexander Buttner's on-off move to Saints has taken another twist.
The 23-year-old has been part of a protracted summer transfer saga that has tested the patience of all at St Mary's, but sources in Holland have confirmed to the Daily Echo that his club, Vitesse Arnhem, still expect him to leave this summer.
The top-flight Dutch side have even taken the step this week of excluding him from their team picture for next season, so certain are they now that he will depart.
However, whether St Mary's will be his eventual destination is still a mystery.
It seemed like a normal transfer when Saints agreed a fee with Vitesse for the left sided player, but the deal hit the buffers when a third party claimed they were owed a percentage of the transfer fee, believed to be around £3m.
Although Buttner's representative, Aleksandar Bursac, was confident the issue would be successfully resolved, it has still not reached a conclusion, leaving the player, his club and Saints in limbo.
The news that Vitesse appear to be resigned to his exit, with Buttner having just one year remaining on his current contract, is some kind of a boost to Saints' hopes of getting a deal done but Nigel Adkins will not want this to drag on any longer than it has to.
Adkins admitted last week that ideally he would have liked to have done more business already with the summer building work for the Premier League thus far only consisting of recruiting Jay Rodriguez and Steven Davis, who is still unable to play until FIFA sort out his international transfer certificate wrangle.
Saints are now abroad on their pre-season tour and would have wanted to have a complete squad together now so they had time to gel and prepare properly for the Premier League season, which kicks-off for them at Manchester City in just 33 days.
If Buttner were to arrive it would strengthen Saints' left hand side cover, which is strong in the full back role but wafer thin in midfield beyond Adam Lallana . The club are also after a right back, at least one centre half, some pace out wide and a goalkeeper.
There has also been interest in Buttner from Fulham and QPR, who may seek to take advantage of the delay, but the defender had already stated his desire to move to St Mary's.
Buttner has made his name with the Eredivisie outfit Vitesse at left back but he has also played as a winger for the club and at right back while he came through the ranks at Ajax as a more central attacking player.
The Doetinchem-born player made 107 appearances for Vitesse after making his debut during the 2007/08 season, scoring ten goals in the process, and was part of the provisional Dutch squad for Euro 2012.

I worry about NC when it comes to negotiations. Let's hope this one and 3 or 4 others happen quickly. The first 4 fixtures are very tough. We can't start the season under strength. A bad start could affect our confidence against teams like Villa and Everton.

I don't pretend to understand this whole third party nonsense. It bores and irritates me. Why hasn't somebody explained it in plain English? Simple, nobody other than the clubs and the player know the facts and they are keeping quiet.
What we need is some top flight investigative journalism to find out.
Hello ! Anyone listening?

This doesn't mean that the player himself is causing issues - or even the agent for that matter - although you would have expected the agent to have known in advance of this. The upshot is that patience is key in any business deal, so we as fans just need to trust the management in place (and there is no reason whatsoever not to!) and if the deal is right for Saints then I am sure they will do it as soon as possible. Even buying a sofa second hand can lead to playing hard to get negotiations. When you are talking about millions and an individuals worth in terms of talent then its even more complex, especially if the seller isnt that keen on selling. Chillax and trust in the management to spot the right player for the right position for Saints FC - there is no point hanging onto snippets of gossip.

Even Nigel has stated that he would ideally have done more business by now and I thought the games abroad would have seen a few more signings getting a chance to bed in. Less than 5 week to go! I hope NC isn’t being too hardnosed.

There is no doubt that Adkins has done a remarkable job in bringing Saints from League 1 to the Premiership in two seasons. However I do fear for Saints in the Premiership right now. We are off on our pre-season tour and preparation with what is basically a Championship side. Hardly good prep for the new season is it.
I am sad to say that I just don't think Adkins has the negotiating and pulling strength to build at Premiership level. I hate to contemplate it, but I genuinely do not think he has the cutting edge at this level. The botched negotiations with Buttner, the Rangers 'on-off' signing and the inactivity over the Brum goalkeeper says it all for me.

Our management will not bow to this and I commend them.
We will get our men but on the terms that SFC want.
The right deals will get done, keeping patience gets harder the closer to the start but it will be worth it.

Relax - Nigel and Nicola are on top of things. The club have just announced they have no announcements so they are obviously certain the uncertainty will continue for an uncertain period. Furthermore, I'm told they are now entirely clear that the cause of this problem is the lack of a solution and that they will therefore adopt a down to earth approach whilst things are up in the air.

So far we have broken our transfer record- finally... And signed a quality midfield player , our chairman and manager have not let us down yet and i am not worried that they are about to now. We have proved that we have money to spend, and we will spend it on players with the right attitude and abilities.

George, how do you know "Something similar to this happened last season with Gorkss?" It sounds like a rather different situation to me.
I obviously don't know the details of the deal for Buttner but in principle it seems similar to me. And why didn't we know about the third party interest until the last minute. Surely NC must ask these questions in the early stages of a negotiation?
I guess I just get frustrated with the lack of transfer activity. I would like to see it all done by the end of July so the new players can settle in. I don't think our squad, as it stands, is good enough to survive in the P.L. We are likely to get off to a slow start and we have eight fewer league games this season compared to last season.
If we lost our first four games, which I hope we don't, we would have 34 (including 17 away) games to accumulate 40 points with our current squad, or even an enhanced squad. A tall order I think.
Call me a pessimist if you like, but I call myself a realist. Last year we were never going to go down. This year that is not the case and I think it essential to enhance the squad ASAP.

Time is running out and the spotlight is very much on on NC at the moment especially as he has cocked up transfer windows before remember the Forte fiasco signed in panic because NC had missed out on every other target? It just goes to show that NC is fully aware of the value of good performance in the transfer market and the pressure is on his shoulders at the moment. I can only wish him luck.

NC has done a brilliant job at Saints except in one area that of press relations and i believe that is hurting the club as there is nothing worse for fans than unanswered speculation.
While the club may be tight lipped others are not and the Clyne and Buttner transfers are a case in point. Doing you business in private simply does not happen in football it is naive tO suggest otherwise.I also wonder whether clever use of the media might have helped to remove whatever the obstacle is to the Buttner deal as it does look as if someone is being unreasonable here.

..... after careful inconsideration, I've come to the conclusion that it's time to panic. I've sent to NC/NA a list of ALL the players that were so useless last year that their clubs have released them early from their contracts and reminded him about the sad demise of Rangers and the Skates.
They're all available on the cheap, but, knowing how being cheapskates would anger those on here wanting to see the cash spent, I've advised NC to slip a few extra million to the players' former clubs.
Know what? I've just heard back from NC and the deals are being done. So far, he's signed Badboy Barton for £30m (wages £150k per week), the entire Rangers squad for a mere £250m, Emile Heskey on a pay-as-you-fallover deal (est. to be worth £10m to the player and a few million to each of his former clubs - turns out his agent put a sell-on clause in all his previous contracts), Halford, Kanu and Kitson are all on their way for a knock-down £100m (and they've thrown in the shed) ...... and, the really great news is that we've just bought Tommy Forecast for £150m from ...... eh ...... us! So, that's an aditional £150m in the transfer kitty to fund the Messi/Iniesta deal I predict will be completed before the end of the week.

According to various sites we are buying, Butland, Clyne, Zaha, Michu.
Plus Nigel has been interviewed and stated what positions he wants to strengthen.
Moaners do not read anything which contradicts their current gripe. Myself I think that negotiations are just that, just because we want a player, doesn't mean foregone conclusion he joins us. I am realistic enough that any player given the choice of the new arrivals or an established team, the job of persuasion is more difficult for us.Jayrod came, so did Steve D . More will follow, plenty of time yet!

For one, I am not interested in ow other clubs sign or offload players, why should Southampton copy other clubs. I can't remember Norwich or Swansea making too many massive changes last year and they did OK didn't they?
I don't believe we should be panic buying and held to ransom, if this is how other clubs run their business then fine.I personally think we should take careand make sure the players we sign are riht for Southampton.

I am not moaning just expressing a frustrated opinion. I have to earn £1500 to attend Saints games. I have a right to criticise the supplier of my entertainment if I am unhappy with the service provided. Even if that is in the preparation stage.
I always praise NC and NA when things are going well. If we strengthen our squad to the level required I won't be criticising them, I will be praising them.

Yes, we can all speculate on what is going on at SFC. However, when you look at that activity going on at other Premiership clubs - off loading and strengthening their respective squads, we at Saints have done virtually nothing.

They're all available on the cheap, but, knowing how being cheapskates would anger those on here wanting to see the cash spent, I've advised NC to slip a few extra million to the players' former clubs.
Know what? I've just heard back from NC and the deals are being done. So far, he's signed Badboy Barton for £30m (wages £150k per week), the entire Rangers squad for a mere £250m, Emile Heskey on a pay-as-you-fallover deal (est. to be worth £10m to the player and a few million to each of his former clubs - turns out his agent put a sell-on clause in all his previous contracts), Halford, Kanu and Kitson are all on their way for a knock-down £100m (and they've thrown in the shed) ...... and, the really great news is that we've just bought Tommy Forecast for £150m from ...... eh ...... us!

NC bought a struggling club for around £15 million on behalf of the new owner, then returned that club to the premiership in three years. Show me anybody else who can match that.

Ignore the skunt. Even if we went down, we'd still be a division at least above the fishes.
I don't know why they get so worked up anyway. Apart from last few dark years, it's been the norm for the previous 40 odd for us to be in the higher league, generally us in the top flight and them down below somewhere.
Normality is restored, no more, no less.
They've just got amusingly short memories...apart from when they can all somehow remember having a team( assembled purely due to the military related players in the area ) that was good for a couple of years after the war.
Very sad, very bitter, and very insignificant.

Relax people.....this is the same as watching a game and getting frustrated with the team for not scoring 3 before half time.....it doesnt do anyone any favours!!

If the price has gone up we maybe turning our attention elsewhere, such as Clyne maybe.
Its natural that a lot of thought is going into this we have one throw at the dice, one budget, we cannot afford mistakes. At the end of the day better to get the right player 2 weeks before the season starts than the wrong one 6 weeks before.
Knowing NA and NC suddenly a couple of signings will appear no one thought of.

Watching the over-reaction of a few fans because someone has dared to make it clear they are nervous. The accusations of them not being fans because they have worries about lack of activity on the transfer market. Makes them no less a fan nor does it mean they moan in their seats
There is excitement right across the board, everyone wants Saints to do well. Some are impatient, others worry our squad is not strong enough, others think the squad is strong enough.
NA and NC have not let us down in the past.
I think we would all like action on the transfer market.
Yet if Alex has become over priced, then maybe we have turned our attention elsewhere to someone like Clyne or some other player.
Maybe with the extra finance quoted we can get a better player elsewhere for the money. Maybe Alex will still come. Everything is a maybe until it happens.
Reading and West Ham are extensively up grading their squads.
I am sure we will sign several players. Yet we have to be sure, they are the right player and at a price that is in line with their ability.
This sometimes takes time. Yes NA said at the end of the season he had a wish list. Yet it is not always possible to get the player you want. Then you have to revise and look elsewhere.Whether we buy a player now or 2 days before the season starts, the important thing is to get the right player, with the right temperament.
NA has basically said he is looking on 3-4 new players at least, besides those he has got.
So chill folks lets not slag each other off. Don't get like the fishy folk down the road.
We all care about the club.

We put out 2 good teams on Saturday and there was no Dickson Barnard and Reeves, so we're not exactly bare bones, just a tad exposed if we get an injured GK or CB (mind you thought Seaborne looked good although maybe not for the Prem).
Just look at our signings over the last 3 years - no real duds there, just the opposite. The Pardew tranche have been pretty much outstanding, and even the in and out ones have delivered crucial goals or assists to make the difference and get us where we are today. Even NA's Forte indulgence got those 2 goals v MK Dons - who's to say what might have happened without them. So (unless you see Forecast on the teamsheet v Citeh), I say don't worry.

Normally I would be promoting the Saints management.
I have seen that they have been all over the place trying to sign players and no one seems to want to sign.
----------------I'M AVAILABLE-----------
Not one approach yet.
Can't believe it!
Would have loved a trip to France.
Can still kick a ball (just).
Used to be decent, any way, I'll be cheap, make a great cup of tea.
Done loads of training (Just in case).
Happy to say I can now run to the corner shop for the Pink and not get to breathless.
I'll happily negotiate directly with NC as I am old school and don't need an agent.
THE FUTURE OF SAINTS HERE IS AT STAKE DUE TO THE LACK OF SIGNINGS IF YOU LISTEN TO SOME OF THE POSTERS
----------COME AND GET ME--------
dont miss this chance or WHA or Reading may come calling.
