Vitesse Arnhem expect Saints target Alexander Buttner to leave this summer

Daily Echo: Alexander Buttner Alexander Buttner

Alexander Buttner's on-off move to Saints has taken another twist.

The 23-year-old has been part of a protracted summer transfer saga that has tested the patience of all at St Mary's, but sources in Holland have confirmed to the Daily Echo that his club, Vitesse Arnhem, still expect him to leave this summer.

The top-flight Dutch side have even taken the step this week of excluding him from their team picture for next season, so certain are they now that he will depart.

However, whether St Mary's will be his eventual destination is still a mystery.

It seemed like a normal transfer when Saints agreed a fee with Vitesse for the left sided player, but the deal hit the buffers when a third party claimed they were owed a percentage of the transfer fee, believed to be around £3m.

Although Buttner's representative, Aleksandar Bursac, was confident the issue would be successfully resolved, it has still not reached a conclusion, leaving the player, his club and Saints in limbo.

The news that Vitesse appear to be resigned to his exit, with Buttner having just one year remaining on his current contract, is some kind of a boost to Saints' hopes of getting a deal done but Nigel Adkins will not want this to drag on any longer than it has to.

Adkins admitted last week that ideally he would have liked to have done more business already with the summer building work for the Premier League thus far only consisting of recruiting Jay Rodriguez and Steven Davis, who is still unable to play until FIFA sort out his international transfer certificate wrangle.

Saints are now abroad on their pre-season tour and would have wanted to have a complete squad together now so they had time to gel and prepare properly for the Premier League season, which kicks-off for them at Manchester City in just 33 days.

If Buttner were to arrive it would strengthen Saints' left hand side cover, which is strong in the full back role but wafer thin in midfield beyond Adam Lallana . The club are also after a right back, at least one centre half, some pace out wide and a goalkeeper.

There has also been interest in Buttner from Fulham and QPR, who may seek to take advantage of the delay, but the defender had already stated his desire to move to St Mary's.

Buttner has made his name with the Eredivisie outfit Vitesse at left back but he has also played as a winger for the club and at right back while he came through the ranks at Ajax as a more central attacking player.

The Doetinchem-born player made 107 appearances for Vitesse after making his debut during the 2007/08 season, scoring ten goals in the process, and was part of the provisional Dutch squad for Euro 2012.

I get the impression that someone (possibly Buttner) tried to pull a fast one, and that's why we might have lost interest. But then again, what do I know?

Something similar to this happened last season with Gorkss? We messed about for 3 weeks then Reading did a deal in 2 days.

I worry about NC when it comes to negotiations. Let's hope this one and 3 or 4 others happen quickly. The first 4 fixtures are very tough. We can't start the season under strength. A bad start could affect our confidence against teams like Villa and Everton.

The press are just guessing, just like these threads but with bigger print.

I don't pretend to understand this whole third party nonsense. It bores and irritates me. Why hasn't somebody explained it in plain English? Simple, nobody other than the clubs and the player know the facts and they are keeping quiet.

What we need is some top flight investigative journalism to find out.

Why does everyone get so irate about things they dont know the detail of? A 3rd party has come out of the woodwork and demanded a fee, we shouldn't be held over a barrel for any player so rightly we have said no to paying it. This doesn't mean that the player himself is causing issues - or even the agent for that matter - although you would have expected the agent to have known in advance of this. The upshot is that patience is key in any business deal, so we as fans just need to trust the management in place (and there is no reason whatsoever not to!) and if the deal is right for Saints then I am sure they will do it as soon as possible. Relax people.....this is the same as watching a game and getting frustrated with the team for not scoring 3 before half time.....it doesnt do anyone any favours!!

Nice one.
Even buying a sofa second hand can lead to playing hard to get negotiations. When you are talking about millions and an individuals worth in terms of talent then its even more complex, especially if the seller isnt that keen on selling. Chillax and trust in the management to spot the right player for the right position for Saints FC - there is no point hanging onto snippets of gossip.

I think it's fair for fans to speculate how things are going, we won't all agree. Personally I'm disappointed at the amount of players brought in when it’s beyond dispute that we need more. Even Nigel has stated that he would ideally have done more business by now and I thought the games abroad would have seen a few more signings getting a chance to bed in. Less than 5 week to go! I hope NC isn’t being too hardnosed.

Relax - Nigel and Nicola are on top of things. The club have just announced they have no announcements so they are obviously certain the uncertainty will continue for an uncertain period. Furthermore, I'm told they are now entirely clear that the cause of this problem is the lack of a solution and that they will therefore adopt a down to earth approach whilst things are up in the air.

Yes, we can all speculate on what is going on at SFC. However, when you look at that activity going on at other Premiership clubs - off loading and strengthening their respective squads, we at Saints have done virtually nothing.

There is no doubt that Adkins has done a remarkable job in bringing Saints from League 1 to the Premiership in two seasons. However I do fear for Saints in the Premiership right now. We are off on our pre-season tour and preparation with what is basically a Championship side. Hardly good prep for the new season is it.

I am sad to say that I just don't think Adkins has the negotiating and pulling strength to build at Premiership level. I hate to contemplate it, but I genuinely do not think he has the cutting edge at this level. The botched negotiations with Buttner, the Rangers 'on-off' signing and the inactivity over the Brum goalkeeper says it all for me.

Can't blame NA for either Buttner or Davis problems. We have been interested in Butland but Birmingham have raised the bar beyond a reasonable price for an untried keeper. Our problem is that we want good players that others also want but we also have a wage structure. Cortese and Adkins both want Saints to play with a style and prefer to bring in young players and train them to fit ithout disrupting the team. I said right frm the beginning that we would not bring in aged PL stars.

What we don't know is all the agro that they will also be going through to get them in.

Our management will not bow to this and I commend them.
We will get our men but on the terms that SFC want.
The right deals will get done, keeping patience gets harder the closer to the start but it will be worth it.

Rising Son, what I mean is we messed about trying to get Gorkss? for three weeks and then lost him to Reading, who only took two days to do the deal. As I understood it we were arguing about a relatively small amount of money. Gorkss? went to Reading for approximately £1.2M.

I obviously don't know the details of the deal for Buttner but in principle it seems similar to me. And why didn't we know about the third party interest until the last minute. Surely NC must ask these questions in the early stages of a negotiation?

I guess I just get frustrated with the lack of transfer activity. I would like to see it all done by the end of July so the new players can settle in. I don't think our squad, as it stands, is good enough to survive in the P.L. We are likely to get off to a slow start and we have eight fewer league games this season compared to last season.

If we lost our first four games, which I hope we don't, we would have 34 (including 17 away) games to accumulate 40 points with our current squad, or even an enhanced squad. A tall order I think.

Call me a pessimist if you like, but I call myself a realist. Last year we were never going to go down. This year that is not the case and I think it essential to enhance the squad ASAP.

I keep saying it but there is something wrong with NC´s approach to transfer business althouh elewhere he has not put a foot wrong. It is naive to assume that just because the club has a policy of keeping mum until the deaL is done that other clubs including those you are negotiating with not to mention agents are going to keep their mouths shut. They are not going to simply because there is always a chance that another club might bid higher for a player and force up the price. Where Buttner is concerned the deal has gone on far too long and I can only assume that someone is digging their heels in and is refusing to budge no prizes for guessing who that might be. Unfortunately it wil not do Saints any good as we may end up starting the season without adequate reinforcements which could put in jeopardy all the hard work of the last two years.
Time is running out and the spotlight is very much on on NC at the moment especially as he has cocked up transfer windows before remember the Forte fiasco signed in panic because NC had missed out on every other target? It just goes to show that NC is fully aware of the value of good performance in the transfer market and the pressure is on his shoulders at the moment. I can only wish him luck.

One would imagine the third party is Ajax who sold him on maybe with a clause reference his future transfer. Which would possibly mean the transfer price has gone up.I am sure he was only going to cost 1.6-2m. If someone has a written in clause of 3m then we are looking at possibly 5m maybe. I can only see Ajax as being the third party. Who knows. Maybe time to look elsewhere.

Choice comment I have had to laugh`"certain the uncertainty will continue for an uncertain period" do you really believe what you write or is this some form of blind adulation or hero worship.
NC has done a brilliant job at Saints except in one area that of press relations and i believe that is hurting the club as there is nothing worse for fans than unanswered speculation.
While the club may be tight lipped others are not and the Clyne and Buttner transfers are a case in point. Doing you business in private simply does not happen in football it is naive tO suggest otherwise.I also wonder whether clever use of the media might have helped to remove whatever the obstacle is to the Buttner deal as it does look as if someone is being unreasonable here.

I'm sure that if they don't get their way they will put their foot down with a firm hand.
It's probably a case of the FEWER the signings, the HIGHER the league position. However .....

..... after careful inconsideration, I've come to the conclusion that it's time to panic. I've sent to NC/NA a list of ALL the players that were so useless last year that their clubs have released them early from their contracts and reminded him about the sad demise of Rangers and the Skates.

They're all available on the cheap, but, knowing how being cheapskates would anger those on here wanting to see the cash spent, I've advised NC to slip a few extra million to the players' former clubs.

Know what? I've just heard back from NC and the deals are being done. So far, he's signed Badboy Barton for £30m (wages £150k per week), the entire Rangers squad for a mere £250m, Emile Heskey on a pay-as-you-fallover deal (est. to be worth £10m to the player and a few million to each of his former clubs - turns out his agent put a sell-on clause in all his previous contracts), Halford, Kanu and Kitson are all on their way for a knock-down £100m (and they've thrown in the shed) ...... and, the really great news is that we've just bought Tommy Forecast for £150m from ...... eh ...... us! So, that's an aditional £150m in the transfer kitty to fund the Messi/Iniesta deal I predict will be completed before the end of the week.

I know it seems that we are struggling to sign players while all around us other clubs are managing it, but that is not the reality. We have already signed two, and it appears others are close. There is always some tough talking and brinkmanship at this point in the summer, which is why so much gets completed on deadline day. It's the same for everyone.

No offence, but you musn't panic in an hysterical way. I am looking at things with much more placid alarm and self possessed fright. I think it is vital that we keep our composure whilst going to pieces and make sure that everyone is calmed down before putting the wind up them.

I will become an optimist if we make good signings by the end of July.

I am not moaning just expressing a frustrated opinion. I have to earn £1500 to attend Saints games. I have a right to criticise the supplier of my entertainment if I am unhappy with the service provided. Even if that is in the preparation stage.

I always praise NC and NA when things are going well. If we strengthen our squad to the level required I won't be criticising them, I will be praising them.

I have heard to day that a French defender called Bibel Mohsni is going to an unamed premier league club for a trial this week end. He has been playing for Southend and the word is he is of a much higher standard than league three. Could the player in question be coming to Southampton on trial. I understand the squad return from France on Saturday. Nigel does bring in players no body has ever heard of who come up trumps. Buttner deal will not happen we will look else where. I have total faith in the management team unlike the doubters posting. I believe the action on transfers will develop from Saturday onwards. We have brought in quality so far in Davis and Rodrigeuz. Unlike Reading who are buying mostly championship players and older premier players like Shorey who have seen better days. We go for quality. Why panic when clubs like Norwich Liverpool, Stoke and Sunderland have not spent much. On the whole so far transfer window quiet, reflects the fact that their is not so much money about these days. The message is spend wisely.

I believe you are wron... But time wil tell!

For one, I am not interested in ow other clubs sign or offload players, why should Southampton copy other clubs. I can't remember Norwich or Swansea making too many massive changes last year and they did OK didn't they?

I don't believe we should be panic buying and held to ransom, if this is how other clubs run their business then fine.I personally think we should take careand make sure the players we sign are riht for Southampton.

Remember, 5 weeks is a long time in football.

Saints and Vitesse had agreed a deal, when Buttner sprang the third party problem on the Dutch club. Couldn't be Ajax as it would be in the contract. Vitesse would therefore get less money as they would have to pay it out of the sale price from Saints. They sounded cross on their OS but also said that Saints had behaved properly, so no fault at NC's door. Seems Buttner had a separate pivate undertaking that he told no one about.

The dutchman is on his way to Pompey after realizing if he joins the scummers, relegation is likely and he could very well end up playing championship league football the following season.

I think there's more chance of the fishy people not having a football team or them playing in League 2 the year after next then there is for our relegation. I personally give the guys more than 5 weeks, like many on here, as I have already wrote off the trip to the Etihad in a very pessimistic way. Think we need the players in before Wigan massive game imo

Exactly who are these clubs who have bought a whole new squad while we have only bought 2 players?
I only ask because that must mean they will now have a few spare players we could get quite cheap!
According to various sites we are buying, Butland, Clyne, Zaha, Michu.
Plus Nigel has been interviewed and stated what positions he wants to strengthen.
Moaners do not read anything which contradicts their current gripe. Myself I think that negotiations are just that, just because we want a player, doesn't mean foregone conclusion he joins us. I am realistic enough that any player given the choice of the new arrivals or an established team, the job of persuasion is more difficult for us.Jayrod came, so did Steve D . More will follow, plenty of time yet!

COYRS!!
I utterly respect your right to an opinion montewotsit......

but ....

Rubbish. Utter utter rubbish. Complete and utter utter rubbish.
Absolute and and complete utter utter rubbish.

NC will prevail. His negotiation skills are blue chip, rock solid and I fully support the confidentiality/secr
ecy approach until the deal is sealed.

NC bought a struggling club for around £15 million on behalf of the new owner, then returned that club to the premiership in three years. Show me anybody else who can match that.

As for all the puffs we hear, forget them. The rumours are usually complete hogwash and are there to sell papers.

Quit dreaming and get on the beam.

NC has done a brilliant job at Saints except in one area that of press relations and i believe that is hurting the club as there is nothing worse for fans than unanswered speculation.

Ignore the skunt. Even if we went down, we'd still be a division at least above the fishes.
I don't know why they get so worked up anyway. Apart from last few dark years, it's been the norm for the previous 40 odd for us to be in the higher league, generally us in the top flight and them down below somewhere.
Normality is restored, no more, no less.
They've just got amusingly short memories...apart from when they can all somehow remember having a team( assembled purely due to the military related players in the area ) that was good for a couple of years after the war.
Very sad, very bitter, and very insignificant.

Halleluiah! Spot on.

Ajax is the only club other than Vitesse that could have a charge of that amount on a transfer over Alex. A agent may get a cut in a deal normally a percentage of the deal. Sounds like someone hasn't read the small print carefully and we are being asked to stump up more money.
Apparently there have been talks since feb about bournemouth and pompey merging.

Next go and look to see who they have bought. Apart from the top 4 clubs how many of them would you have wanted at Saints?

I think the fact that reading and WH have already brought in 11 signings between them shows how far we are behind. We need some quality signings with top league experience. jay was always a good signing despite his inexperience at this level. Davies possibly and has experience. Whilst I have faith in NA and NC we can't treat the Premiership like we did the championship cos we will catch a cold. We need some players with that extra quality and top level experience. I am sure they will come i just think a lot of people are nervous. IMO we need three to four players with proven experience to come in at this level to survive.
Its not being depressed or moaning its logic.

With the upmost respect wobblycat, how long have you been following saints ? possibly 40 +years like me ?.
Now that may seem patronising and for that I apologise. I,m just a supporter like anyone else, but if theres one thing Ive learnt in life is that where big money is concerned, contractur
al negotiations are very difficult. Yes,like you I would like to see all transfer dealings wrapped up by mid july, who wouldnt ?but Im afraid its not possible.
Have you ever sat round a table with contractors trying to thrash out an agreement? I have ,in the far east, middle east and the |UK,trust me ,to cross the I,s etc etc and get a deal that suits you ,nailed down is very difficult ,withn the added attraction of agents thrown in !!!.
I have complete faith in nicola,s ability to negotiate on behalf of SFC,If a deal doesnt go through its not in our best interest-period.
We will get the players that suit our pay structure and style of play.
Please be patient, keep the faith, the club is bigger than all of us.

I think with the Alex deal whether with Saints or anyone else, this third party problem is going to rear its head. At the end of the day it will all pivot on how much a club coming in values him at.
If the price has gone up we maybe turning our attention elsewhere, such as Clyne maybe.
Its natural that a lot of thought is going into this we have one throw at the dice, one budget, we cannot afford mistakes. At the end of the day better to get the right player 2 weeks before the season starts than the wrong one 6 weeks before.
Knowing NA and NC suddenly a couple of signings will appear no one thought of.
Out of interest how do people think this side compares to Strach's?

About 35 years, after a brief flirtation with Leeds Utd! I take your point and I’m aware contracts are not easy but it’s been disappointing so far as Nigel has commented himself. I’m not pouting, just commenting, it’s tough for some!

It's a great time to be a Saint!
No offence, but you musn't panic in an hysterical way. I am looking at things with much more placid alarm and self possessed fright. I think it is vital that we keep our composure whilst going to pieces and make sure that everyone is calmed down before putting the wind up them.
Fair point, but I'd still rather have Clive Dunn (Corp. Jones) in charge of transfer policy! He's a man who knew exactly how to panic and when. If you calm, sensible people on here had your way, we'd have Douglas Adams doing all the nogotiating in a 'Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy' sort of way ..... DON'T PANIC this and DON'T PANIC that. How on earth can people do business if they don't panic? If we don't panic buy soon, NA will be saying, 'so long and thanks for all the skates!'

If the Buttner deal was going to happen
it would have been done last week.
NC wasnot going to agree to a sudden
third party claim out of the blue.
I think Vitesse are fed up with Buttner
and have told him that he can go.
I appreciate it is not easy in the transfer
market but I am now getting anxious
as valuable training and "getting to
know you time" for new players is
being lost and the week in France
will certainly will not have been as
beneficial as we had all hoped.
Lets hope for some news soon.

is it just me that wonders why it ALWAYS takes Saints so long to buy players surely in March/April we should have formulated our list of targets then got the deals done. If this was done I think ticket sales would grow, shirt sales might increase as well due to the excitment generated. It just seems a bit negligent that we always wait until the last minute given players need time to bed in to a new team. I'm not saying NA & NC aren't trying to strengthen as I don't doubt they are all I want is a bit more focus and speed. I think we need at least 4 new signings IE GK, CB, CM AND WINGER and am concerned that the better targets are being snapped up by other clubs.

Call yourselfs fans.? have any of you moaning **** ever run a footbal club?. I expect your the ones that sit there getting on to the players when things dont go our way. Just because you buy a ticket and turn up dont make you the perfect supporter. Youv'e got to be vocal as well and even more so this coming season. It's going to be tough no matter who we buy and the club needs you to get behind them now. So pull yourself's in and get real.

It's a great time to be a Saint![/p]
No offence, but you musn't panic in an hysterical way. I am looking at things with much more placid alarm and self possessed fright. I think it is vital that we keep our composure whilst going to pieces and make sure that everyone is calmed down before putting the wind up them.[/p]
If we don't panic buy soon, NA will be saying, 'so long and thanks for all the skates!'[/p]
If you start reading Vogon poetry and quoting it in detail on here, then I suspect many of us will leave this site.[/p]
"Oh freddled gruntbuggly Bigfeller777 thy micturations are to me. As plurdled gabbleblotchits like Phylis on a lurgid bee. Groop Fatty I implore thee, Dan, Bob and Bill my foonting Seedhouse turlingdromes. And Confucious hooptiously drangle me with Tugboat Osprey crinkly WobblyCat bindlewurdles, Or I will rend thee in the Puppy gobberwarts with my Retford blurglecruncheon, see if I don't!" (There, that should rid the site of all skates, WUMs and moaners. If they come back, they'll get something tasteless by Azgoths of Kria.) P.S. Think we'll signed another Davies?[/p]
Not to mention the person from Redbridge![/p]
However The very worst poetry of all perished along with its creator, Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings of Sussex, in the destruction of the planet Earth.[/p]
That was in the Film version, the book version said the location was Greenbridge, Essex![/p]
I guess she moved after all the bad press! Personally, I have always thought her work was misunderstood :) P.S. Good rant Bob! I've a sneaking feeling we might just have some news either today or tomorrow. Don't know why, I just have a feeling. Strasbourg Saint

Its natural for people to be nervous that we do not seem to be bringing the players in.
Watching the over-reaction of a few fans because someone has dared to make it clear they are nervous. The accusations of them not being fans because they have worries about lack of activity on the transfer market. Makes them no less a fan nor does it mean they moan in their seats
There is excitement right across the board, everyone wants Saints to do well. Some are impatient, others worry our squad is not strong enough, others think the squad is strong enough.
NA and NC have not let us down in the past.
I think we would all like action on the transfer market.
Yet if Alex has become over priced, then maybe we have turned our attention elsewhere to someone like Clyne or some other player.
Maybe with the extra finance quoted we can get a better player elsewhere for the money. Maybe Alex will still come. Everything is a maybe until it happens.
Reading and West Ham are extensively up grading their squads.
I am sure we will sign several players. Yet we have to be sure, they are the right player and at a price that is in line with their ability.
This sometimes takes time. Yes NA said at the end of the season he had a wish list. Yet it is not always possible to get the player you want. Then you have to revise and look elsewhere.Whether we buy a player now or 2 days before the season starts, the important thing is to get the right player, with the right temperament.
NA has basically said he is looking on 3-4 new players at least, besides those he has got.
So chill folks lets not slag each other off. Don't get like the fishy folk down the road.
We all care about the club.

I tend not to take the view that NC and NA know what they are doing. Let them get on with it.

It's the quality not the quantity of signings that matters, targeted and planned. Reading and West Ham are signing fast - so what? Reading built up a great momentum with a very tight squad, but it took time. New players to integrate, and less time to do it than last year as the opposition is better, may make it an uncomfortable start for Reading. WH just buy to show off they've got loadamoney, like Delboy on a good week. Maynard and Baldock are quality players but will languish in the reserves as they're not suited to the hoof ball that Sam reverts to get results. NA's said what he wants - GK, CB and FB cover will come in for sure. We will not go to Citeh with Forecast on the bench.
We put out 2 good teams on Saturday and there was no Dickson Barnard and Reeves, so we're not exactly bare bones, just a tad exposed if we get an injured GK or CB (mind you thought Seaborne looked good although maybe not for the Prem).

Just look at our signings over the last 3 years - no real duds there, just the opposite. The Pardew tranche have been pretty much outstanding, and even the in and out ones have delivered crucial goals or assists to make the difference and get us where we are today. Even NA's Forte indulgence got those 2 goals v MK Dons - who's to say what might have happened without them. So (unless you see Forecast on the teamsheet v Citeh), I say don't worry.

I,m starting to feel a bit dissalusioned.

Normally I would be promoting the Saints management.
I have seen that they have been all over the place trying to sign players and no one seems to want to sign.

----------------I'M AVAILABLE-----------

Not one approach yet.
Can't believe it!
Would have loved a trip to France.
Can still kick a ball (just).
Used to be decent, any way, I'll be cheap, make a great cup of tea.
Done loads of training (Just in case).
Happy to say I can now run to the corner shop for the Pink and not get to breathless.
I'll happily negotiate directly with NC as I am old school and don't need an agent.
THE FUTURE OF SAINTS HERE IS AT STAKE DUE TO THE LACK OF SIGNINGS IF YOU LISTEN TO SOME OF THE POSTERS

----------COME AND GET ME--------

dont miss this chance or WHA or Reading may come calling.

We have not had these good times for quite a while now and just because other clubs are spending money it does not mean those players would suite our club. Lets see where we stand when the new season kicks off. I for one believe N igel will have his jigsaw layed out just as he wants it. If not that.s the time to have a moan.
