Southampton set to tie up deal for Crystal Palace’s highly-rated right back Nathaniel Clyne

Nathaniel Clyne and Adam Lallana battle it out Nathaniel Clyne and Adam Lallana battle it out

SAINTS are set to announce they have completed the signing of Nathaniel Clyne.

The 21-year-old right back emerged as one of Nigel Adkins ’ top summer targets, and the player is understood to have agreed to a four-year deal to come to St Mary's.

Clyne revealed on his Twitter page this evening that he was on his way to Geneva to join up with the squad on their pre-season tour, while changing his biography to confirm he is a Southampton player.

The only stumbling block had been over a fee, with Crystal Palace valuing the player at £4m.

However, a deal has been agreed which is believed to be worth just over half that with a sell-on clause included.

Clyne was out of contract and if Palace had dug their heels in then the player could still have joined Saints with a tribunal setting a fee at a later date.

It is understood that both Palace and Saints were always keen to try and ensure a clean deal was struck to save it dragging on.

Thoughts of Saints adding a second Palace player, pacy winger Wilfried Zaha, are on the back burner for the time being – though not totally ruled out – with Palace determined to try and hold onto their man in the face of losing Clyne.

Palace were resigned to losing Clyne this summer and his signing is a coup for Saints with Manchester United, Newcastle, Reading, Fulham and West Ham also having been reportedly interested.

Stockwell born Clyne has won caps at England under-19 and under-21 level and has already made 137 appearances for Palace, scoring one goal.

He was named in last season’s PFA Championship team of the year.

Go to a tribunal imo. They wont get anywhere near 4m. The tribunal just sets the cost of developement. how much did we get from Man City for Mills £300k? Best went for £400k? The biggest fee i can remember is Routledge for 1m

Hope the backroom boys are backing this fullback signing and it won't backfire - or at least there's a backup plan to backpedal and backfill with a backstop to ease our backlog. A backdated backhander might payback. Otherwise, one drawback will be a backlash of backbiting on here - especially if the feedback is for yet another setback.

GX Saint says...

Can't see Palace letting it go to a tribunal. I reckon it will be settled at £1.25m but that the announcement will describe it as 'an undisclosed fee' which means we're none the wiser anyway.
This seems to be the most straightforward deal of the 3 (Davis, Buttner, Clyne) and is simply negotiation and brinksmanship.

On another note I have been having a look through the gallery of the pre-season tour and I'm wondering if Puncheon is part of NA's plans this year, I thought he might be top of the 'to sell' list but the closer we get to the new season the more I think maybe he will have a role to play.

It does seem odd to wish to avoid a tribunal, when they so often put a low value on players (as pointed out above). However, I presume with other clubs in the running for him, Palace can expect a fee. Therefore if Saints are in a position of progress down the road of signing him we will be expected to pay an agreeable fee or Palace will just say stuff this, lets take a step back and start again with a club that will pay.

I don't really know what more the club could have done in the last 2 years since he has passed on. Only having 1 extra place they could have been higher in the table on both ocassions. I too am getting a bit worried by the lack of signings but I know the work is in place to get it sorted. As for comments about Reading and West Ham none of their new signings really stand out, Pogrebnyak possibly aside

I think that, as with most songs in their 'oeuvre', Oasis borrowed quite heavily when it came to composition. They had to give Gary Glitter a writing credit, as I recall, but it remains officially an Oasis record.

Anyway, you can say what you like about Gary Glitter but that man knew how to write a tune.

If it happens great, but there are other clubs in for him. The Palace chairman's latest statement was there was interest but no concrete offers, which included Saints as well as the likes of M. Utd, Spurs and WH.
Since then everything has gone silent, all the paper talk has gone quiet. Amazing how the Echo comes up with something that is so dated now.

No normal human being likes to kick someone or Club down only those who hold grudges as we all know how we felt when Saints went into administration.
But Saints found wonderful owners and Management that is second to none. look at the team we are building it is loaded with under 21 internationals and players like Luke Shaw who Chelsea are willing to pay $4 million for.
Pompey Phil good luck to you , I hope Pompey can rebuild but the problem has been the irresponsible owners your club elected and the poor fans like yourself are suffering big time.
The Saints with double promotions and incredible owners and Management will surprise many just as they have shown over the past 2 seasons. Happy Days...Good Luck to you Pompey Phil I hope Pompey survive and do well in the lower leagues

I think Clyne likes CPFC too much to see them seen off. A bit like NA at Scunthorpe. I bet a reasonable fee has been agreed. Anyone know much about him?

Got to say I was very impressed with JWP (Paul scholes like) and Jack Stephens on Saturday. JWP kept coming for the ball short only to be moved on by Hammond. I think a lot of Hammond but time for him to make way.

..........on an entirely different note does anyone know when the Citeh tickets will go on sale and will it be ST holders having 1st dibs again
U speak a lot of sence mate! But reckon that we need to keep hold of them!!!!!! Rember it's a new saints and we have got the money now + in the prem now!. we r no stepping stone anymore!!!! Brother was told by ticket office, buy three weeks before the game and only one ticket per s.t.holder. Said he did not know the price. My guess start saving now just to be on the safe side.

2 more? A goalie and a centre back?

I'd add a further 2, just for good measure; an extra bit of pace on the right and Buttner on the left.

Then we'll be ready.

Now you're living up to your name, welcome on board.

Monticristo in Portugal, now's your chance to get on the bus, too. Or do you think there's a crisis pending?

I note the 'average' ST holder gave the usual thuggish response and the 'padded seats' STH offered the kind of sound financial advice that would cost a mint if offered by someone from the City.

I'll just see if any of my fellow prolls come up with anything and, if not, I'll tell her to splash the perfume and leave her knickers at home.

Since then everything has gone silent, all the paper talk has gone quiet. Amazing how the Echo comes up with something that is so dated now.
If it happens it will be on OS first.

I think they are likely to unveil both signings together today on tour.
Buttner is clearly wanted by Adkins - and he thinks it's a done deal! Not such a long trip for him...
Still concerned we have not signed (or have knowledge of) another centre back - and how long can Tommy Forecast stay No.2 at this level? He did keep a clean sheet last night in the 2nd half!
What level are the team we played last night - equivalent to League 1 or lower?
