Southampton set to tie up deal for Crystal Palace’s highly-rated right back Nathaniel Clyne
7:30pm Wednesday 18th July 2012 in Sport
Nathaniel Clyne and Adam Lallana battle it out
SAINTS are set to announce they have completed the signing of Nathaniel Clyne.
The 21-year-old right back emerged as one of Nigel Adkins ’ top summer targets, and the player is understood to have agreed to a four-year deal to come to St Mary's.
Clyne revealed on his Twitter page this evening that he was on his way to Geneva to join up with the squad on their pre-season tour, while changing his biography to confirm he is a Southampton player.
The only stumbling block had been over a fee, with Crystal Palace valuing the player at £4m.
However, a deal has been agreed which is believed to be worth just over half that with a sell-on clause included.
Clyne was out of contract and if Palace had dug their heels in then the player could still have joined Saints with a tribunal setting a fee at a later date.
It is understood that both Palace and Saints were always keen to try and ensure a clean deal was struck to save it dragging on.
Thoughts of Saints adding a second Palace player, pacy winger Wilfried Zaha, are on the back burner for the time being – though not totally ruled out – with Palace determined to try and hold onto their man in the face of losing Clyne.
Palace were resigned to losing Clyne this summer and his signing is a coup for Saints with Manchester United, Newcastle, Reading, Fulham and West Ham also having been reportedly interested.
Stockwell born Clyne has won caps at England under-19 and under-21 level and has already made 137 appearances for Palace, scoring one goal.
He was named in last season’s PFA Championship team of the year.

This seems to be the most straightforward deal of the 3 (Davis, Buttner, Clyne) and is simply negotiation and brinksmanship.

Hope the backroom boys are backing this fullback signing and it won't backfire - or at least there's a backup plan to backpedal and backfill with a backstop to ease our backlog. A backdated backhander might payback. Otherwise, one drawback will be a backlash of backbiting on here - especially if the feedback is for yet another setback.
I can't remember the song's name, but I think it was by Hal David and Burt BACKarach.

On another note I have been having a look through the gallery of the pre-season tour and I'm wondering if Puncheon is part of NA's plans this year, I thought he might be top of the 'to sell' list but the closer we get to the new season the more I think maybe he will have a role to play.

So far we have signed 4 young players that other clubs came to our youth games to watch. Jayrod, Steve Davis and have made bids for areported 3 others. What more do you want? You hold Wetspam as an example, they signed a dodgy keeper from Poopey, an old keeper who wasn't wanted by a relegated team and let go the England keeper! I think you need to take a look at yourself

I don't really know what more the club could have done in the last 2 years since he has passed on. Only having 1 extra place they could have been higher in the table on both ocassions. I too am getting a bit worried by the lack of signings but I know the work is in place to get it sorted. As for comments about Reading and West Ham none of their new signings really stand out, Pogrebnyak possibly aside

If it happens great, but there are other clubs in for him. The Palace chairman's latest statement was there was interest but no concrete offers, which included Saints as well as the likes of M. Utd, Spurs and WH.
Since then everything has gone silent, all the paper talk has gone quiet. Amazing how the Echo comes up with something that is so dated now.
If it happens it will be on OS first.

Now back to the serious business of Premier League football.
Clyne is quality - Good signing if it's pulled off. I wish we could do the double and get Saha as well. He is a very tricky player indeed. It looks less likely now though.

So where are all the big name signings you were all expecting, I will tell you where at other clubs because they know how s**t you are and they also know you are not gonna stay in the prem,at this rate all these lower league players you are signing, man city will put 8 past you on the opening day, and i 4-1 can;t wait for that,PUP,PTID
I can understand it as your team is just a season or so from leaving the football league altogether and that is a terribly grim outlook for you. Do try to come to terms with it though as this overwhelming jealousy will consume your very soul. Try to control the humiliation, the feeling of inferiority, the utter feeling of uselessness and the inner rage or it will surely harm your health.
Now run along there's a good chap.

No normal human being likes to kick someone or Club down only those who hold grudges as we all know how we felt when Saints went into administration.
But Saints found wonderful owners and Management that is second to none. look at the team we are building it is loaded with under 21 internationals and players like Luke Shaw who Chelsea are willing to pay $4 million for.
Pompey Phil good luck to you , I hope Pompey can rebuild but the problem has been the irresponsible owners your club elected and the poor fans like yourself are suffering big time.
The Saints with double promotions and incredible owners and Management will surprise many just as they have shown over the past 2 seasons. Happy Days...Good Luck to you Pompey Phil I hope Pompey survive and do well in the lower leagues

Well proved wrong again, I must admit, Two more signings and we will be ready. Sorry guys
2 more? A goalie and a centre back?
I'd add a further 2, just for good measure; an extra bit of pace on the right and Buttner on the left.
Then we'll be ready.
Now you're living up to your name, welcome on board.
Monticristo in Portugal, now's your chance to get on the bus, too. Or do you think there's a crisis pending?

Let Strassie know thanks for his comments. I cannot of course communicate directly with him. You could pass it to a regular attender who can pass it to an occasional attender who can of course communicate with him.

This article is nearly a week out of date.

Buttner is clearly wanted by Adkins - and he thinks it's a done deal! Not such a long trip for him...
Still concerned we have not signed (or have knowledge of) another centre back - and how long can Tommy Forecast stay No.2 at this level? He did keep a clean sheet last night in the 2nd half!
What level are the team we played last night - equivalent to League 1 or lower?
