Nathaniel Clyne completes move from Crystal Palace to Southampton

Nathaniel Clyne and Adam Lallana batte it out Nathaniel Clyne and Adam Lallana batte it out

SAINTS have completed the signing of Nathaniel Clyne.

As revealed by the Daily Echo, the 21-year-old became one of Nigel Adkins’ top summer targets as he strengthens his squad ahead of the big Premier League kick-off.

Saints say they have not yet agreed a compensation fee with Palace for the England under-19 and under-21 international, who has moved to St Mary’s on a four-year deal.

The defender was out of contract at Palace, but Saints owe compensation because Clyne is an academy graduate under the age of 24. If a figure cannot be agreed, then it will be set by a tribunal.

Clyne’s signing, which the club confirmed this morning, is another piece of the jigsaw for Adkins who has already brought in Jay Rodriguez and Steven Davis this summer and is looking to recruit a goalkeeper, at least one centre half and some pace out wide, as well as the potential deal for Alexander Buttner.

Adkins now has three right backs to choose from with Clyne joining Frazer Richardson and Danny Butterfield in the Saints squad.

Clyne was one of the highest rated young players in the Championship and had attracted interest from other top flight sides before Saints swooped. He broke into the Palace first-team at the beginning of the 2008/09 season, making his debut in a 3-0 home win over Barnsley.

He penned a three-year deal soon after and grew to become one of the Eagles’ key players.

Clyne won the club’s player of the year award for the 2010/11 season and last term was included in the Championship team of the year.

Clyne revealed on his Twitter page last night that he was on his way to Geneva to join up with the squad on their pre-season tour, while changing his biography to confirm he is a Saints player.

Well done Saints for getting him onboard!

£2.5m too is not too much for a highly rated young player - shows the guy wanted to come here.

(Believe the doom & gloom merchants yesterday & he was never going to sign for us - hah!)

Good signing.

For me the signing of these youngsters shows great foresight of behalf of NA and NC building a team that can compete in the Premier League now, as well getting young players who can be moulded in the way NA wants them to play the game and who will remain at the club for years to come.

The more I witness NA management style and the way he goes about his business the more I like him, I was sceptical at first but he is proving me wrong time and time again, love the way NC supports his manager buying players NA wants without the club getting ripped off, a great double act in my opinion.

Hopefully the Buttner deal can get sorted out as well, however if NC and NC don't think it right for SFC then move on and find another one for that position.

Getting excited about this Premier League thingy, Is anyone else?

Does anyone else get the feeling these financial rules are utter twaddle? The Glazers take £500m out of United and out of football in order to pay interest charges to banks and this is considered fine whereas Abramovic and Mansour pump £2bn into the game and this is not ok. Surely FIFA's obligations should be to football and not the banks?

The rules protect football's existing order by making it harder for any newcomers to challenge the elite in spending power. Thus it would make it a truly remarkable achievement if Nicola can mount a serious challenge in the Premier League within the next five or six years. We should back him to the hilt.

I think this deal was sealed weeks ago when Martin went on loan to Palace for the season. All we need now is right winger, centre back, goal keeper and left back and then we will be ready.
I noted that Barnard and Dickson were left at home. So prehaps they will be out the door. Now we have signed Clyne I think Butterfield or Richardson's days could be numbered. I would prefer us to keep Richardson as he is a good crosser of the ball. The doubters seem to have gone on their holidays today. In answering Mr Chivers questions regarding Mr Gorkis not signing for us last year is simple. Mr Chivers you do not your left foot from your right. Gorkis is a right sided centre back and at the time our need at Southampton was a left sided centre back at time, enter The Hoover. Thats why in my opinion we went for the Hoover. Do'nt undermine our chairman and manager Mr Chivers! They know what they are doing, unlike your self.

Its shaping up nicely. The reason we are taking our time in the transfer market is we are going for quality. Unlike Reading who are shopping for players at Asda,s we are more in the Waitrose or Marks and Spencer mode. I understand Poopy shop at the pound shop for players, who sell by date has past.

I am not sure everyone understands the Fair Play Rules.
The Fair Play Rules originally had to be fully implemented by 2013. This was then extended I believe to be by 2015.With the start being this season. By 2015 all clubs must be clear of debt, this includes money placed in the club by the owner which is considered a debt.
As I understand it from now no owner can further subsidise a club. In the buying and paying of wages of a player. The same goes for any institution such as banks. By 2015 all existing debt must be negated.
Why do you think our debt was turned into shares by our owners?
The Glaziers borrowed over 700m to buy MU. With huge interest payments on top of this. It is a testament to MU's commercial viability, that they have not only still bought and functioned but paid interest and reduced the debt to 428m. This is being floated on the NY stock exchange as 49% of the shares. Which because of MU's commercial viability is expected to be snapped up. Therefore MU will be debt free. I think I read that commercially MU bring in something like 100m a year.
One would expect that Chelsea and MC would do the same but as we did by turning debt to owner shares.
From now an owner can only invest in the superstructure and infrastructure of the club. I.E. Bricks and mortar.
So the income of a club must now cover transfers all wages and every day running expenses.
So sponsorship and commercial sales become a big must for clubs as well as bums on seats. MC have sponsorship deals now totaling 250m a season.
Clubs cannot accrue any further debt from now and must negate existing debt by 2015. The extension was given to negate existing debt because of the huge debt carried by the top clubs in Europe.
As I understand it the penalties brought in for clubs who default, are expulsion from all European competition. Transfer embargoes and fines and there is even talk of relegation in some cases of serious offences.
They are also talking of a European transfer and wage cap.
Which would have a two fold effect
It would give a larger band of clubs the ability to compete for top players.
It would also mean that they would evenly spread through europe. There is no doubt that Platini is envious of the financial pulling power and massive TV deals of the Premiership.

What ever the truth of Gorkss (decent player), it's in the past. My only concern with your slant, George, is that you seem to think that what Warnock said at the time (not sure I even bothered to listen) is the gospel truth.

I'd love NC to be more public, but it's not his way and that way, 'the quiet way' if you like, is his choice. He runs the friggin club after all. Through this quiet way, Saints have gone from almost down the pan to the Prem and stand of the verge of going places we never (no, not even in the great late '70s and hurlyburly early '80s').

I have no problem with differing opinions on here, it's healthy. The only ones who really get to me are those (silent today) who are so quick to state as fact that 'something or other is going badly wrong'. Void of the facts, they create a load of bull, sell it as truth and then go silent once proved wrong.

Anyway, in the end, whether we doubt the management, believe totally in them or have mixed views, we're united as one behind the club we all love.

Onwards and upwards. COYR!

I'm still here ACP and very pleased we have signed Klyne.

If it was as simple as you say with Gorkis then why were we talking to QPR for 3 weeks? As quoted by their manager at the time, Neil Warnock. I think somebody would have worked out the feet issue by then don't you.

My issue is with the time we take to sign players. I worry about getting them bedded in and up to their best before the big kick off against City.

But good news today! But no doubt my patience will have run out again if we don't sign three more by the end of July.
Hi ACP just watched a 7 minute you tube training film of Gorkss (correct spelling). Two footed, with a preference for his left foot. Check it out yourself it's the one where he is taking a training session with kids.

COYR!
Strassie, Warnock is one of my favourite managers. Why? Because he is a winner and gets teams promoted. I know his big mouth is annoying but I can suffer that because he is successful. But I can understand why others don't like him.

I was brought up by a loud mouthed, opinionated, aggressive, successful, semi-pro manager who annoyed and upset other managers, players, referees and supporters throughout Hampshire. But like Warnock he was a winner and that was all that mattered. Winning!

That's not to say I don't like quieter successful managers. I do.

Onwards and upwards. COYR!

Why are we talking about a player who we never signed from last season, Gorkss didn't sign end of story. The reason he didn't sign I have no inside knowledge of, but one thing is for sure we have signed good quality players at the right deal who fit into our team with the right mental attitudes.

I personally don't know why you keep on banging on about this deal, it never happened. Personally, I like the way Saints are going about their business and I'm glad with what they are doing. Signing a handful of players who are only signing on for money rather than the vision of the club is not what we want, look at QPR last year! I also don't want to sign a few 30+ year old players with premiership experience from failed teams who have not achieved anything in their career and are lookingfor one more pay day.

So far this transfer window we have done good business, just like we did the last one and theone before that. Two promotions is evidence of that.

Yep agreed i was not trusting anything until it was on OS. It was a well worn story last week in the nationals and then went quiet at the weekend when it was reported the palace chairman said there had been no concrete offers. After the Bentner episode I admit to being a bit sceptical until it was on the OS.

Agree with Ashley on Gorkis, Southampton made an initial enquiry and never went back. Which Warnock threw his toys out his pram over.

I think we have a bit to go before we can emulate the 80's side George. At one stage we had three England captains playing in the side. Mills, Ball and Keegan.
We also had the youngest midfield in the division with Baker Williams and Holmes all in their very early twenties, Ball being the exception. So a mixture of youth and experience can work.
There is no doubt we do have the potential as a club to challenge the eighties side. Probably the first side since Big Mac's to be in that position.
Yet a step at a time. If we can establish ourselves this season it would be great.

I may be cynical but whats to stop Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan (Man C man) sponsoring his own team? He has stakes in Virgin Galactic and Sky News Arabia (thanks Wiki). If that's not allowed under the new rules surely he just has to have a quiet word with a similarly influential mate of his and Man C get a massive sponsorship deal that would fund any transfer or wage they want? I hope there is something in place to stop this but how would you ever prove it? Correct me if I'm wrong as would genuinely like to know how this may affect our beloved team who seem to be playing by the rules at the moment.

sorry we can not sign Jeremain Lens because he either wears the number 7 or number 9 and neither of these are available. Also we have enough young and exciting players who will go on to be brilliant. High time we bought at least one old codger with a dodgy history and an attitude to disrupt the squad and get himself sent off during critical games.

A lot of posters are suggesting we need a left back, from what I have heard we already have a very capable player in Luke Shaw, it would not suprise me if he gets the nod before the other two. I do think we need another CB. and GK, otherwise we are fine, if someone else (any position) wants to jump on the bus, then thats fine as well. We wont win every game but I can see us at least mid table, If not better

The Liebherr interest is a business one...build the Club and build the worth...the Etihad "investment" is all about a man with immense wealth looking for a new toy to play with. I don't honestly believe that the fair play rules will ever change that. If FIFA are good to their word then City will not be able to compete in Europe for example after 2015 if they have debt.
The debt can be turned to shares so it is no longer a debt before 2015. City are now in a position where no further investment should be needed from the owner. 250m in sponsorship vastly improved commercial sales and a squad of valuable players, they are basically set up. Whether by direct or indirect link they are sponsored by the owner through a business and whether that is legal in the eyes of FIFA I do not know.
I agree Liebherr are now not involved with Saints through football interest, but as a memory to Marcus and as a business interest.
If Saints remain in the top flight and are profitable then I think Liebherr will remain with Saints,
