Chance to impress for frozen out Saints players

Matt Oakley celebrates scoring for Saints in the Premier League against Norwich

First published in Sport

SAINTS are set to send a young side to Exeter tonight – but will give a few of their fringe players another chance to impress.

With the first team having been away in France, and now preparing to face Ajax at St Mary’s on Saturday, most of the big guns will be left back in Southampton , rather than travelling to the west country for a game that is part of the deal that brought Dan Seaborne to St Mary’s in January 2010.

Exeter are billing the game as being against a Saints XI and are expecting predominantly youngsters to make the trip.

It is likely that the side sent to Exeter will be similar to that which went to local non-league clubs Winchester City and Sholing under the banner of the under-21s.

That means another chance to impress for second year academy scholar Sam McQueen, who scored twice in both games against Winchester and Sholing.

Those teams featured some of Saints’ rising stars of the future, alongside senior faces in the shape of Lee Barnard , Ryan Dickson and Jonathan Forte .

That trio appear to be struggling to make the cut for the club’s 25-man Premier League squad, having not gone on the tour of France.

But friendlies such as tonight’s at League 2 Exeter give them another chance to impress Nigel Adkins , or – potentially more likely – put themselves in the shop window for moves.

Exeter will be treating the game as a first team friendly and have started preseason well with three wins from three, albeit against non-league opposition in Guernsey, Dorchester Town and FC United.

Paul Tisdale’s side are unlikely to field former England goalkeeper David James, who is currently training with them, but there is a chance that ex- Saints midfielder Matt Oakley could be included in their side.

Oakley has yet to commit to becoming an Exeter player following his release from Leicester this summer.

But the 34-year-old, who made more than 250 appearances for Saints, is sought after by the Grecians who are keen to convince him to sign after an impressive loan spell last autumn.

Tisdale said: “I have left a spot in our squad and a particular role in the team, and a role in the club for him.

“He has had a week’s training now and hopefully, in a week’s time, we will tie that up. But I am not looking for anyone else as I really want Matt to be here.

“He made such a big contribution last year for the brief time he was here, and I want him to make that contribution for the full year this time.”

 • Kick-off at St James Park is 7.45pm.

Surely NA doesnt need another friendly to see if he wants to keep these players? He will know by now, and so should they. This is a shop window game for possible purchisers - if you are keen on buying him come to the game at Exeter tonight. That aside, Id love them all to prove me wrong and become Premiership rocks for the Saints in the year to come.

I think that Forte and Barnard will deffo be gone soon, there are a fair few clubs sniffing around lee from the Championship, so think he will be plying his trade there next season. Forte i think will end up in League 1. I heard notts county were keen, i have also heard that Harding is wanted by Sheffield Wednesday, another player who done well for us but isnt up to the standard of the prem. It seem Dickson could have gone to crawley but instead got greedy and didnt take the choice of 1st team football over a pay cut, so i reckon he will just see out his contract with us. Hopefulyl all these players will move on, free up some wages and re-coup some transfer funds.

I hope these guys do move on and find new clubs. Really thankful for their efforts over the past two/three seasons but unfortunately they are not premiership quality. I fear we will be lumbered with them however. We have given percentage wage increases based on promotions and therefore these guys are on disproportantly high wages. Certainly too high for the league 1/championship level they should be playing at. I hope that the players see sense and don't attempt to see out their contracts before leaving on a free....

Like, I've read feminist literature and I'm well aware - and even agree with - what people like Andrea Dworkin have to say about the commodification of the female form and the deplorable consequences of the objectification of women.

I'm the same. I was first attracted my wife because she was a vegetarian and was therefore clearly a thinking woman. I used to love just sitting and staring every time she ate a corn on the cob.

I also much admired Andrea Dworkin's thoughtful manual on sex -"Ouch! your on my hair again."

He seems to be of very low intellect and does not realise that within two weeks his beloved fish packers will be appearing on the history channel as the club that was sucked dry buy HR and his bunch of unfit and proper people to run a football club. Fatty its time you called it a day your lot are history. Hampshire has only one club and thats the mighty Saints. Lets face it Aldershot have more going for itself than you lot.

Just been down my local, Harding and Davis were their. Asked Harding why he's not playing tonight!? Apparently it's for the young ones! He was a bit curt tbh. I'm kind of hoping he isn't in are plans for next year as I think he's far from good enough.... Thoughts?
My thoughts are that he can play a bit part...for me he has played a large part of our upturn...I don't see him as PL quality, but I questioned Hammond's ability to make the grade in the Championship....so what do I know. Point being...it is up to Dan Harding to prove us wrong!
I personally don't think he's up to it, has he really played since Danny's been here? I really don't think we will see him in prem as I think he's far from good enough! Let's hope he's not on the gravy train, did a job for us in league one. Can't see him holding his own with scum utd etc! Does anyone think we will unveil anyone Saturday??
On the 'gravy train'? That man played a big contribution towards our success over the last few seasons and I wish him well if he can't raise his game to the required level.

I wasnt convinced Fox's overall game was better but towards the end I think he improved and deserved to be picked ahead of Harding.

Some said Rickie wouldn't cut it in the Prem but he ran away with it. Hammond did better than I expected and Seaborne was a surprise for me although we didn't see enough of him due to the attack.

As Bill said they deserve their chance but if they're not up to it then they have to move on.

I don't think anyone on this forum suggested he would be a star in the Prem...it was simply suggested that he COULD play a part...several players proved themselves above expectations last season, so whose to say they can't step up? NA is the man to make those decisions...not you...

I really don't think we will see him in prem as I think he's far from good enough! Let's hope he's not on the gravy train, did a job for us in league one. Can't see him holding his own with scum utd etc! Does anyone think we will unveil anyone Saturday??[/p]
As Bill said they deserve their chance but if they're not up to it then they have to move on.[/p]
Harding? Good league 1 player! I really can't see Harding doing anything in the prem would love to be wrong but its very doubtful! he was great in league 1 but let's get real we are prem now, get rid and move on! He's good league 1 poss champ player and no more!!! Good luck but e ain't good enough!![/p]
think i'll let nigel be the judge and so should everyone else .[/p]
Fair enough, but I'd put my car (woo babe) on Harding not being up to it! Like I say if I'm wrong I'll eat my penis!![/p]
If that aint a reason for Mr Harding to train hard and step up a level...what is!? :O) Baddesley Bill
