Saints earned a 1-1 draw at Championship outfit Bristol City in their penultimate match of pre-season.

Substitute Billy Sharp pounced deep into injury time to cancel out Robins striker Jon Stead’s sweetly-struck first-half effort.

With the opening game of the new campaign edging ever closer, Nigel Adkins named a strong side, once again deploying three central midfield players with the wide pairing of Jay Rodriguez and Jason Puncheon supporting lone striker Rickie Lambert.

Unsurprisingly, it was Saints who dominated the early stages, albeit without a breakthrough.

Rodriguez had the first effort, turning on the edge of the area after receiving Danny Fox’s throw-in, only for Dean Gerken to get down well to save his shot.

A fluent move two minutes later gave Saints’ record signing another sight of goal, but he blazed over from just inside the box.

Lallana then flashed a left foot effort wide of the far post after latching onto Lambert’s knockdown 18 yards out in the ninth minute.

Saints should have gone in front when Morgan Schneiderlin pounced on Liam Fontaine’s loose pass out of defence, but Ward-Prowse shot straight at Gerken after being slipped in by the Frenchman.

Against the run of play it was actually the hosts who took the lead, as Stead curled home a low shot from 20 yards after receiving Albert Adomah’s lay-off in the 36th minute.

Rodriguez’s deflected shot nearly levelled matters immediately, but an off-balance Gerken did well to stick out a hand and stop it.

Kelvin Davis had to make a good diving stop four minutes before the interval, as Adomah fired in a rasping 25-yard effort after turning Jose Fonte.

Adkins made three changes at the break, with Frazer Richardson, Steven Davis and Jack Cork, who was returning from Olympic duty, coming on.

Like the start of the first half, Saints controlled possession at the beginning of the second, but were unable to translate that dominance into a goal – or even a significant chance.

Lallana was withdrawn just after the hour mark, with Guly do Prado replacing him and being thrust into the unusual position of central midfield.

Eventually, in the 71st minute, the first real effort of the second half arrived. It came from Bristol City, though, as Adomah burst through the middle and fed Stead on the edge of the area.

He in turn found substitute Martyn Woolford around about the penalty spot, but Davis reacted well to keep out his low shot.

Half-time sub Cork had to be helped off late on with what appeared to be a nasty-looking ankle injury.

Sharp was the man introduced in his place, and he duly levelled with what was nearly the last kick, tapping in after Lambert headed Fonte’s deep ball across goal.

Bristol City: Gerken, Foster, Fontaine, Nyatanga, Cunningham (Wilson 61), Adomah (Anderson 85), Morris (Edwards 81), Pearson, Bolasie (Woolford 61), Skuse, Stead (Taylor 73).

Subs: Heaton, Pitman, Wilson, Reid, Bryan, Amadi-Holloway.

Saints: K Davis, Clyne, Fonte, Hooiveld (Seaborne 77), Fox (Richardson 46), Ward-Prowse (S Davis 46), Schneiderlin (Cork 46, Sharp 81), Lallana (Do Prado 61), Puncheon, Rodriguez, Lambert.

Subs: Gazzaniga, Chambers, Hammond, Chaplow, De Ridder.

Att: 2,605 (402 away).

5 pre-season goals for Billy... good effort.

Out of interest how many think Albert Adomah would look good in a Saints Shirt.... any chance?

I would be keen. I saw him play a few times on telly last year and thought he had a lot of potential. Certainly as good as Jimi Kebe at Reading. But I am told by people who have seen him more times than me he is inconsistent. But on his day/night very quick with good close control and the ability to cross and score. Better than Steeeeeeeve I think.

Seems such a waste having Jay Rod out on the left. Adomah was fast as f@?k, we really lack pace like that!! Clyne look good and Cork was a different class! Lallana is our best player by far tho!

I'm worried that Lambert hasn't scored. I hope it isn't the start of a goalless run after his prolific last three years in the lower leagues!

So what's the verdict on our new formation?? I haven't been to a pre-season game. Do we look good? Better than last season??

I'm also a tad concerned that Lambert hasn't score, but we all have faith in his ability to perform.

The new formation is good if a little difficult for all players to grasp, the games against Evian and Etoile Garounge (Correct if spelt wrong) showed a lot of promise in the formation and we could take a lot away from the Ajax game.

Concerned for Cork though.

Still need to bolster defensive options and a new winger. Linked with; Danns, Berra, Lens, Buttner (Still unsure), Olsson, Kayal, Kana-Biyik, Erik Pieters and Walcott as far as I know.

I know friendlies arent all about the result but this result does worry me I thought we would have maybe 2 new players before the Ajax ggame but none arrived so i definetly expected them for the Wolves game and still no one has joined and i believe we still need 8 new players to really compete cant see it happening starting to worry about our prospects one thing I will say though Is Clyne has been great and h is a top signing!

The question is can we play out from the back, get the ball into the other half and create enough shots on target to win games at this next level? My hunch is that in the end we will get there, but a lot of patience from everyone and also some class additions may be required first.

I believe, given Billy Sharps pre-season form, that he should start against City.

As for transfers, we're now all aware that the deals are done behind closed doors, the transfer specualtion is very cagey at best. It requires a lot of patience on our part I'm afraid.

Tadanari Lee was nursing a knee injury wasn't towards the back end of last season? Shortly after scoring that stunning goal.

I went to the game last night and i was in the city end as all my mates are city fans so was outvoted, there were some very good positives from the game. JWP, Lallana and schneiderlain ran the show in the first half from midfield. Hoover looked good against a big striker, fonte not so good in the 2nd half. Clyne looked useful going down the wing, Danny fox was on another planet, in dream world and had a poor game, as did lambert and jay rod too, he seemed to struggle out o nthe wing, puncheon was useful, the problem with playing the formation we do with lambert up on his own, is we dont have any pace on the wings to get up there and support him. Adomah was by far city best player and looked very dangerous, raw pace, driving runs and good strength. Cork was quality when he came on and davis was steady, Frazer Richardson had a shocker but by far our worse performer on the night when he came on was Guly - Absolutely shocking, lost the ball in a bad place City hit us on the break just stood there with his hands on his hips, lazy lathargic, We were right behind atkins and he was hammering him from the bench lol

Plenty of time to do so but the worrying thing is, is the complete lack of activity...not even a rumor! Chainrai equals bleeding the club dry, fans staying away, relegation and ultimate liquidation.

PST equals infighting, lack of direction, no inward investment and a future of being a very small club.

Liquidation equals annihilation, the final solution.

Echo can you run a poll as a bit of fun to see our prefered option?

When we finished last season, NA said we would not sacrifice our attacking principles. Yet we have and its like being in a cleft stick. If we play 4 4 2 we are liable to get over run in midfield. If we play 4 3 2 1, then we are in danger of looking like Chelsea in the European cup final or England in the European championships, not sure which was worst. The new system seems to make us defensively more sound, but leaves Ricky without support. We do not move the ball forward fast enough in midfield.
do we play our 4 4 2 and go for it or the new system?

I think Rickie may well struggle a bit this season. He will probably make more appearances at home rather away and feature as a last 30 minute sub if we are in trouble.

If we play 4321 away from home with him as the 1 I think he is likely to get isolated because of his lack of pace.
He still has the potential to score goals but I don't see him getting so many by peeling off the back stick to the edge of the 6 yard box like he did last season.

We shall see. I was wrong about him last season. I hope I'm wrong again this season. We desperately need a quick CB.

Thing is Seed being realistic how many of those that pledged will back it up? Also would you put your house up for security, when only a maximum of 3000 of the sweaty few have offered to pledge and that is not guaranteed.
The club has nothing other than debt, it has no assetts. Have to be either stupid or have great faith in the sweaty few of 3000 to take that risk. Especially as there are supposed fans of the same club, knocking their effort.

Didn't think there was a law against being a football fan as well as a Saints fan. Then again I am only a muppet who has supported Saints for near on 50 years. From back in the days before they even got in the top division for the first time under our Ted.
The thing is football is sick, inflated transfers and wages, that have put several clubs into dire straits including Saints over the last few years. Its time the transfer and wage cap talked about was brought in by FIFA. as well as the other rules of fair play.
And yes I am worried about Saints, I really hope we bring in some quality signings in the next few weeks. We are still short of 3-4 players who need to be proven premiership quality. The trouble is finding ones for the right price and wage.
We have changed our shape and look more solid, but we seem to have lost our flair and entertaining play. Though given, this is only pre-season friendly time.
I am sure NA has tricks up his sleeve. I think we will stay up but would rather see a few quality new faces, to take us a way from a season long struggle. We have a lot of young players and a lot of potential, we have players with lower league and championship experience, Yet very few who know their way round the premiership. A little back up would be nice.

If you visited Man City how can it be many times? You were only in the top flight for 6-7 years hardly constitutes a long time for many visits. Now 35 out of 46 years in the top flight that gives a chance to visit grounds many times.
Hmm and 2/3rds of Hampshire is red. Yes and we do have a rich history, thank you for noticing.

Seeing i have followed my club for near 50 years i think it unlikely, though. In fairness Man City were a a yo yo club for many years even going down to div 1 as well. So they wer not always around to play in the top flight. Its always nice though to think back on our history. Several fours and a six against Utd, Fours fives and six against Chelsea. Fours on more than 1 occasion against a great Liverpool side. Four against Arsenal and M City. true on occasion we have been on the receiving end as well, yet that comes from being a top level club for long periods. The seasons in Europe, the top eight finishes etc, winning the cup against 'the' team when we were in a lower division, now that is class.

Yes, that's right. Had a wonderful time and said 'yes' in all the right places.

Now in Toulouse for a short South of France break with the little Strassies.

the skunts defence has always been "it's not our fault it was the owners we had,the F.A. didn't carry out a fit and proper test on the owners properly"
the fans are always the ones who get punished.

ask any skunt if they should honour the contracts the players have
ask any skunt if they think the administrator should be paid
do they think anyone should be paid

THE ANSWER IS ALWAYS NO
they won't put their hands in their pockets to save THEIR club but expect everyone else to pay.

liquidate now let them start again, after three administrations they might just learn
promote another club through the ranks to replace them

expunge the records and the clear the decks for a club that will earn the right to compete in the F.L.

Milton it's not a matter of whether they will fail or not, they surely will. It's really really really important that it becomes transparently obvious that the self styled bestest fans ever anywhere in the world ever ever are seen for what they really are. Potless, penniless, infighting, inbred skunts. It must be the failure of the fans to stand up and be counted that puts the final nail in the coffin. Only that will give maximum chortle!
You really are a total tw*t who spends his entire life on the pompey site.
Cheers. I have put a decent shift in. Just one big final push now.
Very amusing reading your comments on the Pompey site today, even i smiled once but not as side splittingly funny as watching the sad few of you trying to create some sort of atmosphere at Bristol last night , that was comedy at its finest
It's nice to see you're finally accepting the inevitable consequences of your cheating over the years. Did you enjoy it? With only 200 of us there it must have felt like a skunt game. Get yourself a season ticket to St Mary's and be amongst the 30000 each week cheering on the only team in Hampshire!
There was supposidly 400 there but sounded like 50, as i said if Pompey go pear i will come for a laff at some of your games, i presume there will always be lots of tickets available
Yes our crowds have never lived up to yours. Shame you never got those clickers fixed on your turnstyles and they under recorded so badly. Still too late now.....

Will they be selling bits off for charity? (not that it will get there of course) Can I buy the bell? (without the knob on the end I hasten to add!)
I could use a new shed...but then again the shoddy old one I already have is probably in better nick!

On this performance even though a friendly you will be hard pushed against premeirship quality this coming season and propping up the bottom of the premier will be your most likely outcome.
Pompey could well be playing you again next season, with you down and us going up.... so who knows, you have more to lose than us.

ha ha ha!

In a way I would like to see you survive. However I can't make up my mind what would be most entertaining for us Saints fans... Either Port Pin or the Fans Trust.... Either way I can see a long painful future for Portsmouth!

on a serious note, I would never wish ill on another business or football club as I know how much the prospect of losing your club or people losing their jobs can hurt. However when Pompey fans are so quick to point out their wonderful history, which most supporters would be ashamed of considering the tax payers, charities and local businesses that have paid for it, I do lack any sympathy for you. Granted, some Pompey supporters have been very honest and have said that they are ashamed of the way they have CHEATED their way to cups. But such supporters are few and far between it would seem.

Whilst you have done well in cup competitions, I think any club would tell you that being in the top flight was a far harder and more significant achievement as you have to earn the right to stay their for 38 games (or more in previous years). This is far harder than going on a lucky cup run and winning a handful of games. So on that note, Saints have had 27 consecutive years in the top flight, many of them were whilst Pompey languished in lower leagues. So in terms of history... Portsmouth are welcome to theirs... I would NEVER swap.

Good luck under the ownership of Port Pin... Something tells me you may need it!!
