HAMPSHIRE’S Alex Danson is adamant Britain’s women’s hockey team will not be leaving London 2012 without a medal – despite their crushing semi-final defeat on Wednesday night.
Victory against the reigning world champions Argentina would have guaranteed Southampton -born Danson and co at least a silver medal from a final showdown with the Netherlands.
However, a 2-1 defeat against the world No. 1 national left them needing to pick themselves up in double quick time for a bronze-medal play-off with New Zealand today.
The tears flowed for the British side in the aftermath of their Argentine defeat, one in which the home side dominated after the break, Danson grabbing them a lifeline with a goal five minutes from time.
Now the ex-Trojans striker insists the upset will be channelled into determination in time for the clash with the Kiwis.
“We’re having to reset our targets because there’s no way we’re going away without the bronze medal,” she said. “I’m absolutely devastated that we’ve worked for four years for this to happen.
“We’ve put everything into this.
“Hopefully people will see that we’ve given everything we possibly could have.
“Now we’ll go back, be professional and come back in the next match.”
Danson added: “The support we have here is phenomenal. One thing we’ll always remember about these Games is that.
“We wanted to make sure we did ourselves proud and we couldn’t do that without the public.
“They are part of this team and part of what we’ll do on Friday.”
