Armstrong believes GB Olympic spirit would benefit Saints

David Armstrong believes Saints should be inspired by Team GB as they prepare to begin the new season with a tough examination of their Premiership credentials.

The former Saints and England midfielder reckons adopting the same attitude of Great Britain’s Olympic heroes is the best way to cope with a start to the season that reads: Man City (a), Wigan (h), Manchester United (h), Arsenal (a).

Beating Wigan is clearly Saints best chance of getting three points during their first month back in the top flight.

Even that will be far from easy against a side that won seven of its last nine games at the end of last season – including victories over Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool.

But Armstrong believes adopting Team GB’s approach to competition will stand Saints in good stead. “Our Olympic athletes are an inspiration,” he said. “I’m always hooked to the television whenever the Olympics come round, it’s always an inspiring event and the positive mental attitude of our gold medal winners is what Saints will need back in the Premier League .

Has anyone read about the story about our alleged illegal approach for blackpools Matt Philips? Sounds like sour grapes to me, holloway has had a grudge against us since we stuffed them in the cup when they were in the premiership. But he would be a great signing, pace and good delivery, something we are definitely lacking in on the wings.

A great fan like you will be at your game today cheering on your team then, get there early as there may be long queues.
jealousy is so ugly.....
like your oddball small bunch of fans at ashton gate the other night, hilarious
4-7 on that Fratton will not sell out for the battle of the South Coast's top two clubs next week!!! What a rivalary between two well supported clubs! Meanwhile poorly supported Southampton will play in front of 4 sell out crowds, two at their poor little stadium! Yes it really is laffaminute supporting the SAINTS!
Enjoy it as you will be relegated by march and then you wont have to go to see the last few games as they will be meaningless like you lot says todays match is.
It's comforting to know that we'd have to fall so incredibly far to even have you in our rear view mirror.

I genuinely wish that Pompey might survive. Now that the leech looks like being back in charge, can't their fans see that it's just delayed (and worsened) the inevitable final result? They seem to be taking it for granted that now the bloodsucker who spent all the cash is back in charge, they'll be in the EPL soon for some reason.

I'm afraid it just isn't going to happen, Pompey fans. Sorry, but you're doomed now. It may take a year or two for Chanrai to rape what's left of your club to get as much money out as he can but the crash at the end of that time is going to be simply horrific.

As for Laffayear, why do you rise to him? Ignore him and he'll drift away.

If that's their last game as PFC then there will be 10,000 of "the best fans in the world" claiming they were there despite the fact that it was probably 200.

Spot on. I'm quite chuffed they have been reprieved because there is still a lot of mileage in this. I for one am going to enjoy watching them suffer;)

At least we lost to a European team unlike Newcastle who lost to Cardiff 4-1!! Also, didn't some small club down the road lose to a non-league team?

Never understood how they could say that if they got rid of their players they would avoid liquidation - it was as if they believed all their debts would suddenly disappear. They still owe millions, just it's not being built up by their footballers any more.
Birch wanting a huge fee is probably the best thing that's happened to them recently though as Chanrai would ruin them (again)
