David Armstrong believes Saints should be inspired by Team GB as they prepare to begin the new season with a tough examination of their Premiership credentials.

The former Saints and England midfielder reckons adopting the same attitude of Great Britain’s Olympic heroes is the best way to cope with a start to the season that reads: Man City (a), Wigan (h), Manchester United (h), Arsenal (a).

Beating Wigan is clearly Saints best chance of getting three points during their first month back in the top flight.

Even that will be far from easy against a side that won seven of its last nine games at the end of last season – including victories over Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool.

But Armstrong believes adopting Team GB’s approach to competition will stand Saints in good stead. “Our Olympic athletes are an inspiration,” he said. “I’m always hooked to the television whenever the Olympics come round, it’s always an inspiring event and the positive mental attitude of our gold medal winners is what Saints will need back in the Premier League .
