Hants frustrated by middle-order fightback

Hampshire struggled to capitalise on a dream start as they continued their LV County Championship promotion bid against Northants.

Having reduced the visitors to 98 for five after a rain-delayed start, Rob Newton and James Middlebrook frustrated Hampshire with an unbroken, 72-run partnership.

Their combination of youth and experience helped Northants overcome the loss of their top order against James Tomlinson (2-27) and David Balcombe (2-16).

Newton, 22, was unbeaten on 46 at the close and found a willing partner in veteran former Middlesex man Middlebrook, who contributed 26.

Northants reached 170-5 at stumps, rain having ensured that only half a day’s play was possible.
