Saints will need to pay big money to sign Uruguayan Ramirez
7:00am Thursday 16th August 2012 in Sport
By Adam Leitch, Chief Sports Writer
Gaston Ramirez
Saints will have to smash their transfer record if they are to make Uruguayan playmaker Gaston Ramirez their marquee summer signing.
The club have money to spend on a big money acquisition having only splashed out about £10m on players so far this summer, and Ramirez would certainly fit that bracket with Bologna wanting more than £12m for the international star.
It is believed that executive chairman Nicola Cortese has held discussions over a potential move for Ramirez, though it was confirmed earlier this week that the only official bid from England for the player was from Tottenham.
Bologna accepted their offer of 16m euros, about £12.6m, but the deal fell through because Spurs were not prepared to match Ramirez’s wage demands.
A move for Ramirez would certainly be an ambitious one from Saints, with the player costing so much and likely to stretch their wage structure but the club remain keen to recruit more faces to boost their Premier League campaign.
Ramirez can play in a variety of attacking positions but Saints would be most interested in his ability to feature as winger, something he has done with great success in Serie A as well as for his country.
The 21-year-old started his career at Penarol in Uruguay but was snapped up by Bologna two years ago for 2.5m euros.
He has gone on to score 12 goals in 58 appearances for the Italian side and won nine caps for Uruguay. He was most recently seen playing for his country in the Olympics .
If Saints were prepared to part with the hefty fee for services, wages would also be a consideration.
Saints will want to be careful not to alienate their current stars by bringing in a player on a much higher salary, but also want to compete for the best players available.
Ramirez’s agent, Pablo Betancourt, said of the failed Spurs deal: “The only solid offer is the one from Tottenham, who offered 16m euros.
“But the deal didn’t go through because Spurs offered too low a wage to the player and if the wage difference is minimal he would stay at Bologna.”
He added: “Inter Milan are interested in the player, but cannot afford to offer cash like the teams in the Premier League.
“Tottenham could raise their offer if they sell Modric and in that case the deal could be done.”

I agree we need some but many of these quality players that are being signed by premier league have no experience and no one has really ever heard of them.
This guy is pure quality and the likes of Inter, Spurs and Liverpool all wanting him surely shows how much potential to do well he has.
Youtube has some cracking videos of him playing and he along side hopefully Jeremain Lens as another signing would be showing great potential to stay in the Premier League.
I just want to say im not moaning at you or getting on your back i am purely intrigued to know why you have made your comment thats all.
Alot of players many people didn;t hear of in the Premier League have been bought in and people now know them.
The fact Cortesse met up with their Chairman shows we want him and will pay up

Perhaps Corky will drop in there in an emergency - and we are all barking mad to want another CB?
We all see things differently - we lack pace, and lacked a creative midfielder for years now...in fact have we ever had a creative midfield player?
Anyway all a bit late in the day season starts in 4-days time and we are still awaiting a defender!

All this talk of pl experience being needed is not necessarily correct, I often look at do called "experienced" players who have hardly been outstanding and yet always get picked up by teams who want that experience. Sometimes these players are stale and do not bring anything to the table but a premaddonna attitude that could disrupt the harmony within our squad... Maybe this is why so far we have walked away from such players. NA and NC know what mental attitude they are after and this is as important as technical ability.

He certainly won't like the drop next season, if he ends up playing for you..and a very big if. The likelihood that he will end up in the championship next season must be a thought in his mind. Top players don't want to be playing for struggling sides and saints look hot favourites to be that with the bookies and strong favourites for the drop.
All of the teams who get promoted struggle initially - thats the nature of the beast. However its widely held to be true that of all the teams, Saints are less likely to go down this year. Are we going to be on the receiving end of some cricket scores? well I hope not but then winning against the top teams in the Premiership this season is not what we are here to do. I'll settle for having a good go at the mid to low table teams and avoiding the drop this year. In the years to come we can look to improve our position. The thing is see, we've got the Premiership standard stadium already so we can pull in the crowds; building the team takes time. We have a nice strong squad now - this season will show those players who can't quite cut it at Premiership level and we will look to replace them when we can. But it really is a case of slow and steady - NA has set out his ambition to play in Europe and maybe one day win the Premier League. We are not going to achieve that over night - we've all been shown a good example of what happens when you try to do that. I'm quite comfortable with whats happening at St Mary's these days. even when we were down I never gave up hope because I knew that we had the stadium and we had the fans who could really make a difference.

The likelihood that he will end up in the championship next season must be a thought in his mind. Top players don't want to be playing for struggling sides and saints look hot favourites to be that with the bookies and strong favourites for the drop. Are you orbiting your own planet somewhere off to the left of the milky way?
Anyone who thinks Saints are going to do amazing things this season needs to smell the coffee. Its going to be a tough season for us, but we have the ability to survive. Not only that we might claim a few scalps along the way which would be great. But let's be realistic - First game is going to be tricky for both teams. Man City don't know Saints. We don't know Man City. The money invested in both teams is vastly different too so you would be right to expect a Man City win.
but..... Its the first game of the season, Saints are an unknown quantity for Man City, who is fit? who isn't on both teams?
I won't be surprised if we lose, but I won't be downhearted. It's just the first game of a long season and not even the Bookies know whats going to happen.

We do NOT need another "playmaker" or a "winger", and we very much do NOT need a prima donna whose pay demands will break our wage structure. Read what his agent says in the article: he'll move club only if he gets a big wage increase, and to get him we will have to outbid the wages offered by a moneybags club like Spurs. No, thank you. For those of you who like a bet, there has been sudden and significant move today in the market for the next Premier League manager to leave his job. Mr Atkins is now clear favourite with all bookmakers and has come in from 8/1 to 11/4 with Sky bet. This type of shift in betting odds only ever happens when someone is in the know. Possibly connected with a major disagreement with Cortese about transfer strategy, I'll wager.

Greetings all from the Golden City at the other end of the M27, where we have successfully signed 10 players this afternoon.

Its not. Because we don't have our heads stuck up our a*ses.
If we do beat Man City it will be a shock. If we draw it will be a great result. If we lose, no one will be surprised.
you seem to be setting great store in one game. Theres a whole season ahead and we aren't going to be facing opposition of the quality of Man City in every game. So go and have your bet, and if it comes in... well done you - Might I suggest you donate the winnings to the PST since they seem to be struggling getting the pledges in. (This often happens when people are asked to put their money where their mouth is. Of course Saints fans don't have to worry about such silliness since we always knew that the stadium we have meant someone would buy us)
you've got a stadium that is just about ok for the league you are in. You don't own it. The owner has set a silly price on it and doesn't look like he's going to let it go for less. You've managed to sign some players - well done. I bet they are top quality league one players. you've got no money you've got no prospects and the 10 point deduction is sitting there waiting for when you exit administration. Even WITH the signings all the pundits are saying you are going to go down again.

I thought I had stumbled into a remake of Sean of the Dead.
At one point, generously trying to boost the local economy whilst supporting my beloved Portugal, I popped into a wine shop and asked for a bottle of Portuguese red and the poor lass behind the counter said, 'what country's that one from?' I gave up and found a bottle in the Co Op next door.
You know how Tad Lee has this guy with him who translates things and is helping him to adjust to the local culture? Well, I hope the skates' 10 new signings have help adjusting; they're going to need it!
