Saints will need to pay big money to sign Uruguayan Ramirez

Gaston Ramirez Gaston Ramirez

Saints will have to smash their transfer record if they are to make Uruguayan playmaker Gaston Ramirez their marquee summer signing.

The club have money to spend on a big money acquisition having only splashed out about £10m on players so far this summer, and Ramirez would certainly fit that bracket with Bologna wanting more than £12m for the international star.

It is believed that executive chairman Nicola Cortese has held discussions over a potential move for Ramirez, though it was confirmed earlier this week that the only official bid from England for the player was from Tottenham.

Bologna accepted their offer of 16m euros, about £12.6m, but the deal fell through because Spurs were not prepared to match Ramirez’s wage demands.

A move for Ramirez would certainly be an ambitious one from Saints, with the player costing so much and likely to stretch their wage structure but the club remain keen to recruit more faces to boost their Premier League campaign.

Ramirez can play in a variety of attacking positions but Saints would be most interested in his ability to feature as winger, something he has done with great success in Serie A as well as for his country.

The 21-year-old started his career at Penarol in Uruguay but was snapped up by Bologna two years ago for 2.5m euros.

He has gone on to score 12 goals in 58 appearances for the Italian side and won nine caps for Uruguay. He was most recently seen playing for his country in the Olympics .

If Saints were prepared to part with the hefty fee for services, wages would also be a consideration.

Saints will want to be careful not to alienate their current stars by bringing in a player on a much higher salary, but also want to compete for the best players available.

Ramirez’s agent, Pablo Betancourt, said of the failed Spurs deal: “The only solid offer is the one from Tottenham, who offered 16m euros.

“But the deal didn’t go through because Spurs offered too low a wage to the player and if the wage difference is minimal he would stay at Bologna.”

He added: “Inter Milan are interested in the player, but cannot afford to offer cash like the teams in the Premier League.

“Tottenham could raise their offer if they sell Modric and in that case the deal could be done.”

Why are you moaning about him not having premiership experience?

I agree we need some but many of these quality players that are being signed by premier league have no experience and no one has really ever heard of them.

This guy is pure quality and the likes of Inter, Spurs and Liverpool all wanting him surely shows how much potential to do well he has.

Youtube has some cracking videos of him playing and he along side hopefully Jeremain Lens as another signing would be showing great potential to stay in the Premier League.

I just want to say im not moaning at you or getting on your back i am purely intrigued to know why you have made your comment thats all.

Alot of players many people didn;t hear of in the Premier League have been bought in and people now know them.

The fact Cortesse met up with their Chairman shows we want him and will pay up

Looks brilliant and only 21 but with Liverpool sniffing and wages that Spurs could not meet makes me think he just may be out of reach. Still NC is showing real intent that we are looking to bring in big signings! I am sure all the moaners on here will be silenced whether we bring in this guy or other quality players on the wish list! Keep up the good work NC and NA! COYR's

A large tent with open sides, used for outdoor entertainment often bearing a signboard on top. SO who wants to pay 12mil for one of those? I think a solid gazebo geezer will do nicely over a pretty marquee boy... anyway Rickie, Adam, Billy, Jay and Chun are our Signature signboards who will light up the Premier league in Hollywood festoon fashion.. just can't wait to see them in the big time.. counting the hours!!!!

Spurs have got alot of players they have to pay very big money to. If we signed this one, Saints can afford the wages...as he's only 21 the sell-on potential is enormous too.Get him!! And a centre half of the same quality!! (We are 5,000-1 outsiders, as I keep pointing out, and this is for a reason...although the Bookies aren't always right, they're not stupid!!)

What with Philips alleged bid and now a playmaker - what about a central defender?
Perhaps Corky will drop in there in an emergency - and we are all barking mad to want another CB?
We all see things differently - we lack pace, and lacked a creative midfielder for years now...in fact have we ever had a creative midfield player?
Anyway all a bit late in the day season starts in 4-days time and we are still awaiting a defender!

I agree. Big fella always goes on about players with premier league experience, but I think we will be fresh with players that are hungry and talented enough to do well at this level.

All this talk of pl experience being needed is not necessarily correct, I often look at do called "experienced" players who have hardly been outstanding and yet always get picked up by teams who want that experience. Sometimes these players are stale and do not bring anything to the table but a premaddonna attitude that could disrupt the harmony within our squad... Maybe this is why so far we have walked away from such players. NA and NC know what mental attitude they are after and this is as important as technical ability.

Would hate to see the arrival of 1 prima-donna upset the harmony that we seem to have built in the squad over the last couple of years.
Yeah. Money can't buy you love for a start. Mind you, it does put you in a better bargaining position. And come to think of it, it's much better than being poor, if only for financial reasons.

Fortunately my wife makes our budget work very well. Her secret is that we go without a lot of things I don't need.

There is a massive fear amoungst chairmen and managers of dropping into the championship and getting stuck in what is hands down the most competitive league in english football. unfortuantley with the likes of West Ham last year they set the president of holding onto major Prem players and getting promoted at the first time of trying - a very risky move and one that only just worked!

Lee Clarke is a joker with his regards to Butland, he is wrong on two accounts, firstly he is not worth 18m and secondly 6m doesnt get you a league 2 GK, we know cause we did for him and didnt get him.

How can you criticise when you have no idea what the club are up to. How many conversations have you sat in on with our chairman when he is enquiring about other players with other chairman. None of us know what is going on but some of us are prepared to wait until the window shuts before we state our opions on how well we have done.

Imagine the squad we'd have if we signed all these players we've been rumoured with the last couple of days:

Ramirez - left wing
Phillips - right wing
Martin Olsson - left back
Christophe Berra and Scott Dann - centre halves

With what we already have, that's a pretty good team.

Unfortunately, I can't see all these signings happening.

Are you orbiting your own planet somewhere off to the left of the milky way?

All of the teams who get promoted struggle initially - thats the nature of the beast. However its widely held to be true that of all the teams, Saints are less likely to go down this year. Are we going to be on the receiving end of some cricket scores? well I hope not but then winning against the top teams in the Premiership this season is not what we are here to do. I'll settle for having a good go at the mid to low table teams and avoiding the drop this year. In the years to come we can look to improve our position. The thing is see, we've got the Premiership standard stadium already so we can pull in the crowds; building the team takes time. We have a nice strong squad now - this season will show those players who can't quite cut it at Premiership level and we will look to replace them when we can. But it really is a case of slow and steady - NA has set out his ambition to play in Europe and maybe one day win the Premier League. We are not going to achieve that over night - we've all been shown a good example of what happens when you try to do that. I'm quite comfortable with whats happening at St Mary's these days. even when we were down I never gave up hope because I knew that we had the stadium and we had the fans who could really make a difference.

Play in europe and win the premier league, may take you a couple of seasons for that.

More than a couple. Buts thats absolutely fine by me because all that time we'll still be in the Premier League and getting stronger with every season.

Anyone who thinks Saints are going to do amazing things this season needs to smell the coffee. Its going to be a tough season for us, but we have the ability to survive. Not only that we might claim a few scalps along the way which would be great. But let's be realistic - First game is going to be tricky for both teams. Man City don't know Saints. We don't know Man City. The money invested in both teams is vastly different too so you would be right to expect a Man City win.

but..... Its the first game of the season, Saints are an unknown quantity for Man City, who is fit? who isn't on both teams?

I won't be surprised if we lose, but I won't be downhearted. It's just the first game of a long season and not even the Bookies know whats going to happen.

This bloke goes to the doctors and tells him one of his testicles is bigger than the other one.
Doc says " It's quite common and nothing to worry about"
Bloke says "Yeah, but one is a lot bigger than the other one"
Doc says "Drop your pants and I'll take a look for you then"
Bloke says " I'll show you but you must promise not to laugh"
Doc says "I'm a doctor so I would not laugh as I'm a professional"
Bloke says "Ok then but you'd better not laugh" and takes out his testicle which is the size of a grapefruit and flops it on the desk.
The Doc bursts out laughing.
So the bloke says "You promised not to laugh so I'm not going to show you the big one now!"

It's not that I need prayer because of where I'm going or any fear that my Mum's car might have its wheels pinched in Eastney, but what if I am confronted by a suicidal skunt? I need divine guidance so that I know how to counsel him or her. When confronted by those difficult words, 'Life's unbearable, I want to top myself,' do I reply, 'just do it!'? Or do I show a bit of compassion and say, 'no, no, don't slit your throat .............

To return to the subject of the article... I'm dismayed to read of our interest in this player. What we need are DEFENDERS, in particular CENTRAL defenders, and a GOALKEEPER. We do NOT need another "playmaker" or a "winger", and we very much do NOT need a prima donna whose pay demands will break our wage structure. Read what his agent says in the article: he'll move club only if he gets a big wage increase, and to get him we will have to outbid the wages offered by a moneybags club like Spurs. No, thank you. I sense a disaster in the making here.

Greetings all from the Golden City at the other end of the M27, where we have successfully signed 10 players this afternoon.

For those of you who like a bet, there has been sudden and significant move today in the market for the next Premier League manager to leave his job. Mr Atkins is now clear favourite with all bookmakers and has come in from 8/1 to 11/4 with Sky bet. This type of shift in betting odds only ever happens when someone is in the know. Possibly connected with a major disagreement with Cortese about transfer strategy, I'll wager.

hmm, genuinely thanks for that, I hadn't seen that page. The "specials" betting page is mostly for clubs in a state of flux, where there is great uncertainty about the outcome ==> betting interest. Next permanent manager? Well Redknapp and Capello are both 10/1, which would you prefer? League position on August 31st; 16th or worse 5/6. Now love you or hate you, that is a serious opportunity to make money, given the opening fixture list that fate has dealt you.

Personally I would go 3-1 but whatever - you seem to think that coming on here and bleating about how we are going to lose to Man City is going to upset us.

Its not. Because we don't have our heads stuck up our a*ses.

If we do beat Man City it will be a shock. If we draw it will be a great result. If we lose, no one will be surprised.

you seem to be setting great store in one game. Theres a whole season ahead and we aren't going to be facing opposition of the quality of Man City in every game. So go and have your bet, and if it comes in... well done you - Might I suggest you donate the winnings to the PST since they seem to be struggling getting the pledges in. (This often happens when people are asked to put their money where their mouth is. Of course Saints fans don't have to worry about such silliness since we always knew that the stadium we have meant someone would buy us)

you've got a stadium that is just about ok for the league you are in. You don't own it. The owner has set a silly price on it and doesn't look like he's going to let it go for less. You've managed to sign some players - well done. I bet they are top quality league one players. you've got no money you've got no prospects and the 10 point deduction is sitting there waiting for when you exit administration. Even WITH the signings all the pundits are saying you are going to go down again.

to be honest I don't know why you are bothering because we got so much ammo to chuck back at you, it makes your whiny little bleatings almost comical.

I have to admit i am absolutely astounded by this.
not by the fact that they have signed 10 players.
but the fact that one of these morons can actually count too ten.
amazing what these animal trainers can do these days.

Well, I made it; I crossed the divide into Portsea, drove round the back of the blue shed, spent a nice evening with friends in Milton (no, they aren't skates) and am now back in civilisation; and, having not passed that way for maybe 5 years, I can honestly say that I really was freaked out and a wee bit scared by what I saw.

I thought I had stumbled into a remake of Sean of the Dead.

At one point, generously trying to boost the local economy whilst supporting my beloved Portugal, I popped into a wine shop and asked for a bottle of Portuguese red and the poor lass behind the counter said, 'what country's that one from?' I gave up and found a bottle in the Co Op next door.

You know how Tad Lee has this guy with him who translates things and is helping him to adjust to the local culture? Well, I hope the skates' 10 new signings have help adjusting; they're going to need it!

Hi redherrings got my tickets for pompey v cherries 2 @ £40 how much your owners charging per game minimum 1 @ £38 ! we are still alive and kicking PST are best thing since fa cup win . you wont sign ramirez just another red herring you dont want to get tied to high wages thats hes demanding you will end up like us ! lambert will have to work twice as hard now in premier or three times harder against Man city must have a bet MAN CITY 3 SAINTS O any saints players with a tip

Like little dogs, they have to bark loudly lest they get devoured.....or filleted.
