Blackpool boss Ian Holloway insists Matt Phillips will not be joining Saints after turning down a £5m offer

Blackpool boss Ian Holloway has insisted he will hold on to Matt Phillips after turning down a £5m offer from Saints.

Phillips pulled out of the squad for the Seasiders’ 2-0 victory over Millwall after handing in a transfer request to try and force a move to St Mary’s.

But Holloway has no doubts he will keep hold of the 21-year-old winger and will make a stand to make his player honour his contract.

“I just want to keep the players I have here now,” he said.

“What we do we do together. We had a meeting about the Matt Phillips situation yesterday.

“The situation was so public I couldn’t lie to my players and tell them otherwise. He has handed in a transfer request but that means nothing.

“They (Southampton ) have offered £5m but we don’t need the money. So what can they do? The player is on a contract and he’s signed it.

“The lad (Phillips) is very disappointed and he is very stubborn and he didn’t feel he could play today.

“He was in my line-up until he told me that, and (Tiago) Gomes came in and he set up the first one so that’s the way it goes.”

Saints have only recruited four players this summer and have had messy public dealings over moves for Alexander Buttner, Phillips and Gaston Ramirez, who Bologna are still insisting will not be sold for less than £16m.

However, they are still keen to recruit new faces but for now, thankfully, concentrate again on the real business as they take on Manchester City in their first game back in the Premier League tomorrow.

If we are guilty of tapping, which I doubt, it would seem very difficult to negotiate fairly with people who turn their phones off or change the numbers so that no one can get hold of them! Contacting a player would be the only way to find out which way the wind is blowing! Blackpool are behaving like a load of spoilt kids.

In your other story who told you Bologna were furious? The club president said he was frustrated. The kids Ramirez was said to be angry at him for holding up his deal.

Sure you have to print the truth, not your embellished version of it.

Saints don't do dealings in public.. others can say what they like and you as we know can print what you like with any spin you like.

imho if The Echo showed support for the team with these subtle digs I'm sure the club would respond in kind.

Dear Echo: Saints "have had very messy public dealings over moves" please put an author's name to this please.

Very well said Dan

However, we've been away 7 years, lots of things have changed ....

I think it's quite a vulgar, showy-off way of scoring goals. Cultured teams like us and Barcelona walk the ball in through 83 passes while smoking a fag and having a natter about the Eurozone crisis.

we have had some rough times recently and we have had some good times, but just thinking about tomorrow feels me with pride and joy, and i would just like to thank all those who have put us in this position, the players still here and those who have moved on, alan pardew played an important part in turning us around, NC for putting a firm hand on the tiller, nigel adkins one of the best managers we have had, us fans have played our part, but most of all markus liebherr without whom none of this would of happend.
lets enjoy this season, lets sing our hearts out and lets get behind the team and cheer them on to victory.

Spare a thought for the poor Man U players. Their silly chairs used to be sponsored by Audi, who gave them all free cars. Now United have signed up with Chevrolet, the players have all got to give their Audis back and are being given rebadged Vauxhalls instead. My heart actually bleeds for them.
I hear Michael Appletons chair is sponsored by Trabant
That's funny - Pompey having a sponsor, I mean.

Everyone, I come in peace.

Please ignore laff (I always thought the word is laugh!!!!) a minute (is that a minute as in 60 seconds of time? or minute as in very miniscule and insignificant) and he will go away.

When you are out on a lovely sunny day having a couple of beers and a BBQ (or whatever takes your fancy), you will always find an annoying wasp that tries to get in your wine glass or on top of your burger. The more you flap and try and get rid of it, the more that wasp comes back.

If you just ignore that wasp, it will get fed up and go and find another wine and burger to infestate.

Laffaminute is that wasp.

Thanks for your time.

Quick prediction:

If Saints lose (and we probably will, given Man C's home record last season) then the usual suspects (Pompey fans plus our tragicomedic posters such as ghk, montecristo, etc) will be on here gloating that we're doomed and that NA must go.

If we draw then we'll just have been lucky and it'll all go wrong next game

If we win (and I stress, reality tells me how unlikely it is no matter how much I want it) then it'll be a flash in the pan that cannot possibly last.

Get your comments ready, Pompey fans (sic) and negativity kings.

Good luck to the Saints and all my 'hillbilly' PREMIER LEAGUE pals today, especially the ones up there, wish I could have made it today. It's going to be hard but it's one game and the hardest we'll have all season so let's not have too much bleating if we get a bit of a lesson! Wish we had got more defenders in for this one but sure (like laffaminutes c*ck) it's in hand.

I assume we're not after both Phillips and Ramirez so who's the better value? £16 million, if that's the price for Ramirez, is staggering!

Don't be silly, Retford, we'll be lucky to win by more than 4!
You've always been the sober realist of this board and I'm afraid you're probably right. I suppose four would at least put us in a Champions League position.
As long as we give a good accounting of ourselves we will have some positives from this game. I expect us to out hussle them and let them know we are there because we deserve to be!
Flip side is we stay out of the bottom 3 by avoiding defeat by 3 or more.
I'm wondering whether the lack of progress on a CB is due to NC leaving it to the last minute to get a bargain on Aug 31. He's presumably not expecting points at Man City anyway and we will beat Wigan at home with the squad we've got.

From the BBC preview for today's game:

"Opta statistics show that Southampton scored only four league goals from outside the penalty area last term - fewer than any other Championship side. "

Your memory's bang on.

However, we did seem to get it in the net rather a lot...

Dear Daily Echo no doubt you will take the cowardly way out but the only reason for messy dealings as you put it is down to you. Maybe if your journalists showed a little more class and skill Saints fans would get the truth rather than the anti-saints slant you are adopting Shame on you Daily Echo
If the reporters showed a bit more care with their accuracy we could accept what they are saying as gospel. Could someone tell Gordon Simpson that Jack Cork was injured in the Bristol City friendly, after the Olympics had finished not as he proscribed in Saturdays Echo.

as for messy dealings, its not saints that have caused it! players and agents have. lets not forget that we knew that clyne was signed and delivered because he changed his twitter account to say he was a saint! wasnt on OS untill next day.

No! - YOU lot get over it. It's all you Saints fans bang on about. The fact you beat an understrength Blackpool team in the cup. I seem to recall, they took FOUR points off you last season. Should have been SIX but for some official adding a ridiculous amount of extra time. You were all crying into your cocoa 18 months ago whilst languishing near the foot of League One - now your a bunch of World beaters. Give me strength.
