Eastleigh register first win

Eastleigh hold a distinct psychological advantage going into today’s tasty south coast derby at Havant & Waterlooville (3pm).

While Stuart Ritchie’s Havant suffered a 2-0 defeat at Bath City on Saturday, Ian Baird’s Spitfires came close to hitting full throttle in an impressive 3-0 dismantling of Weston - super-Mare at the Silverlake Stadium.

Having picked up just one point from their opening two Blue Square Bet South games, the pressure was on Eastleigh’s ‘big spenders’ to justify a pre-season title favourites tag.

They rose to the challenge superbly with Moses Ademola – a league win¬ ner with Woking last season – scoring twice before former Stevenage, Exeter and Crawley targetman Craig McAllister capped a convincing victo¬ ry with his second goal of the week.

“That was more like it, but the sta¬ tistics show we had 57 entries into the final third, so it’s a bit disappointing we didn’t score more,” said Baird. “Weston went 4-5-1 and tried to hit us on the break and, for the first 20 min¬ utes or so, we maybe overplayed a bit.

“But we scored at a good time and then got two quick goals at the start of the second half.”
