First published in Sport

Saints have strengthened their defence with the signing of Japanese centre half Maya Yoshida.

The 24-year-old is joining the club from Dutch side VVV-Venlo, for a fee believed to be around £2m.

Yoshida, who is understood to have had a €3m buyout clause in his contract, has agreed a three-year-deal at St Mary’s.

The player has already been granted a work permit, and is now only awaiting his entry clearance.

In a statement, VVV-Venlo said: "On behalf of everyone at VVV-Venlo we wish him every success at the Saints."

The defender captained his country at the Olympic Games, and has been selected in the Japan squad for their friendly with UAE on September 6 and World Cup qualifier against Iraq on September 11.

Yoshida started his career at Nagoya Grampus before a move to Eredivisie outfit VVV-Venlo in 2010.

Since then, he has gone on to make more than 50 appearances for the Dutch side, scoring five times.

Still, it does beg the question, after Mayuka and Yoshida, who will we see in next?

You've no ambition, Seedhouse. I wanted at least 40 ..... AND I expected to pay at least £20m for each of them - EVEN the rubbish ones.

Why haven't we bought any journeymen yet? You know, players who have been there, done that, bought the T-shirt, raved about how they had always wanted to play for whoever and that it was their dream move and then left after a handful of games on a free transfer for somewhere else?

AND we need at least two new players who can juggle the ball with both feet whilst warming up at half time.

What's more, I can't see anyone in the current squad being good enough to pick out Gossie in row Z of the Chapel when Rickie is unmarked in the box.

Simply not good enough, NC&NA. sort it out or go!

Southampton to announce signings of Ramirez & Yoshida imminently

Rhys Williams should be completed before deadline day

Saints & Arsenal are also battling it out over Boilson, Arsenal have the slight upper hand in that one

Saints also made a cheeky enquiry about Walcott but were unsuccessful. If we live up to our ambition he would consider us at the end of his contract depending on contract talks with arsenal

Massive speculation that the Ramirez deal will be followed by a 2nd Marquee signing. Words quoted to me were 'There is no way you will see this coming'

From Calciomercato...note the time and date which is before the reported meeting at 3pm with Southampton (poor translation):

August 30 at 11:00
Given the difficulties of arriving at Southampton Ramirez , Liverpool came back to the assault with Bologna . The willingness of the Reds to snatch the player to Bologna, but subject to the conditions imposed by the Bolognese. As learned in exclusive Calcimercato.com the request of Bologna is twenty million immediately. Liverpool has reached the maximum 14 but is ready to offer them a new proposal for the red and blue.

The new offensive Liverpool has 5 million for the loan sale and a figure between 10 and 15 million for the redemption obligations in 2013. The Bologna try to resist, but given the player will have to start at the end could accept the new formula to make money in a year. To replace the Bologna returned to the Brazilian Elkeson of Botafogo.

Rhys Williams should be completed before deadline day

Saints also made a cheeky enquiry about Walcott but were unsuccessful. If we live up to our ambition he would consider us at the end of his contract depending on contract talks with arsenal

Massive speculation that the Ramirez deal will be followed by a 2nd Marquee signing. Words quoted to me were 'There is no way you will see this coming'

I'm disappointed in you both, I think we should have signed at least 43, but otherwise I agree, we want all the journeymen experienced has beens, get them NOW!

Lets also buy Michael Owen, I know he is out of contract, but lets pay United 5 million for him anyway! It would be a bargain, he would keep our physios very busy, they would never get bored.

Massive speculation that the Ramirez deal will be followed by a 2nd Marquee signing. Words quoted to me were 'There is no way you will see this coming'

I am a good source and old 606 followers may remember me as having reliable inside knowledge

ha! I would bet that most staff at saints dont even have a clue whats going on transfer wise. We'll read the rumour sites ourselves if we want to be misinformed thanks.
Bit harsh SaintWavey!
Lol I know but everyone seems to think they know somthing others don't. When in reality, the only people who really know what's going on regarding transfers are NA and NC. I personally believe nothing until on the OS. The rumour sites are fun to read but they provide just that... Rumours, and the stories are printed as such. But then you get guys like this, claiming to be Corteses best bud, quoting god knows who and spreading a load of nonsense.
Saint Wavey,Not sure if you are referring to me.Other than the first sentence the rest is a quote from transfer rumours, god who rattled your cage today.

I'm disappointed in you both, I think we should have signed at least 43, but otherwise I agree, we want all the journeymen experienced has beens, get them NOW!

Lets also buy Michael Owen, I know he is out of contract, but lets pay United 5 million for him anyway! It would be a bargain, he would keep our physios very busy, they would never get bored.
;0)
Now come on guys, that was the strategy of skuntsville, and look where it got them..... WTFILN COYR
But I WANT us to emulate that fine, upstanding club on Portsea Island. Their history is second to none and they have the bestest best greatest bestest fans anywhere - EVER! It's a fact, it must be, because THEY said so - OFTEN!

I know it'll come at a price but the only way we can EVER be as ........ well ......... skuntable as them is to do it the skuntville way.

The problem is there are a lot of tried and tested Premiership players that are frankly not that good!

I think we have a real good signing here, he looked superb in the Olympics.

Some clubs will always recycle players around the premiership, players who have not exactly been a great success, but because they have experience they are signed time and time again.

Some clubs however, spread the net far wider, I am pleased to say Saints are one of the clubs that have a deep knowledge and great scouting network to pick up players from a selection of leagues and countries.

It is all progressing quite nicely in my opinion.

How does this all fit with the half the team from the academy theory

Dont get me wrong - Saints for life but a little for Stephens, JWP, Hoskins etc

No experience and poor! HARD SEASON AHEAD! Ramirez is a must by tomorrow.

I think the "half the team from academy players" is an aim for the long term future. I did see an interview some time back where Nigel Adkins said that is something to work for, but it will take time.

I must say I agree with you about some of our younger players though. When people come on here demanding 3 new centre backs and left backs etc, I would like to see the likes of Shaw and Stephens get some game time this year if possible. However, I also understand that we need strength in depth. But this signing gives us that cover at the back. I do feel Shaw and Stephens are nearly ready for some PL football, they are certainly excellent prospects.

SOUTHAMPTON are set to make Uruguay international Gaston Ramirez their £12m club-record signing over the next 48 hours.

Saints have salvaged a deal with Italian club Bologna after talks broke down on how the fee was to be paid. Bologna, in financial crisis, wanted the vast majority up front, but further negotiations have taken place and an agreement reached.

Uruguayan club Penarol, who still have a 30 per cent stake in Ramirez, are thought to have sanctioned the move on the proviso they receive 30 per cent of the fee for any future transfers.

Ramirez, 21, has already agreed personal terms with Saints and is expected to make his debut in Sunday’s home Premier League game with Manchester United.

Here is the report

Reports in Italy suggest Bologna have agreed terms with Southampton for Gaston Ramirez in a deal worth £12m.

The transfer has been chaotic with the player demanding a move and threatening never to play for the Rossoblu again.

Southampton had agreed terms with his agent, but Bologna claimed they had not accepted the offer and so the move was off.

Talks began again from scratch and it is reported in Italy this evening that a deal has been struck at long last.

The contracts need to be exchanged between the two clubs, but the transfer appears to be all but complete at this stage.

Seedhouse the Unrepentant says...

It's all well and good revelling in signing internationals to join our Premier League team but spare a thought for the fishy few:

"Liam Cooper has rejected a loan switch to Pompey.

Michael Appleton had been given the all-clear by Hull boss Steve Bruce to recruit the central defender but Cooper did not want to go.

‘I cannot see that happening now,’ said Appleton, who then sarcastically remarked: ‘I am not sure of the attraction of Portsmouth being on the south coast.

‘He’s a northern lad and I don’t think he quite likes the thought of uprooting.’ "

Maybe he just wants to get paid and not play for a bunch of cheats who will be liquidised shortly?

Lol I know but everyone seems to think they know somthing others don't. When in reality, the only people who really know what's going on regarding transfers are NA and NC. I personally believe nothing until on the OS. The rumour sites are fun to read but they provide just that... Rumours, and the stories are printed as such. But then you get guys like this, claiming to be Corteses best bud, quoting god knows who and spreading a load of nonsense.
Saint Wavey,Not sure if you are referring to me.Other than the first sentence the rest is a quote from transfer rumours, god who rattled your cage today.

Probably because the experienced prem players are demanding experienced prem salaries of 50k a week or more.

Not to worry mate, it won't be long before some of our finds will be experienced prem players themselves. Let's hope we'll still be able to afford them.

I agree with the earlier comment that we need to leave some space for our youth players though. Let's hope we'll bring through Luke shaw the left back rather than buy.

to get more fans through the turnstiles in order to survive.
I don't think they can get out of the shiite' that their in myself, until the fans take the club on.
twenty blokes and the dog will increase the clubs financial standing
by thirty quid a week.so at least they an pay the players.

So you sign another player who is untried at the top level of football, seems to me that cortese and adkins don't want to stay in the prem it appears that they want a one season stay just to collect parachute payments so that they have money to cover the ever mounting debt that is accumilating at your club. hope for your sakes that there are clauses in their contracts for them to take paycuts when you get relegated, you may be signing alot of players but they are championship standard not premier standard. Oh well never mind we all knew it would only be for one season anyway,PUP,PTID

I think you may be confusing our club with yours? We have decent people at the helm not Statler and Waldorf.

Morning everyone. Exciting day ahead; unless, of course, you support a club at which any player scribbling his signature today is only likely to do so at the foot of a signing on form at the dole office.

Dare we dream? 1. Ramirez; 2. another of the previously-mentioned centre backs; AND 3. a completely unexpected world-class one?

I can still remember the day Osgood signed. That was topped the day Keegan signed. Will today be another of those days?

Portsmouth are currently being forced to field just 7 players each week, with thrown out mannequins from a nearby Matalan holding the line upfront. It was hoped Greg Halfords transfer fee would pay for a new pair of shorts for Ashley Westwood the assistant coach, who has been forced to play in club Speedos since an unfortunate tear picked up in the game against Bournemouth.Michael Appleton however stressed the Speedos would soon need to be returned to the retailer he loaned them from, claiming they are struggling to pay the interest on them alone.

I could do a job for them. Trouble is, playing in front of such a huge crowd of the bestest, greatest best, most great, bestest fans in the world would be such an amazing experience, I'd probably freeze and accidently put one through my own net.

........... come to think of it, Voldemort? Come and get me! Go on, you know it makes sense. I'd bring my own boots.

Last day and I just love the rumour machine !! There will be so much rubbish posted today but it will be wonderful to watch.

My favourite was the Del Piero post last night. Noew THAT would top Keegan.... But I think it's better that Keegan remains our biggest ever surprise though, it was at a time when there was still romance and a working class feel to football. I miss that. Now it's all about corporate boxes, over priced shirts, players who wall paper their houses in £50 notes and foreign billionaires (ahem...nothing wrong with that) .... but that still doesn't diminish the passion for the club.

We are Southampton, we are Premier League, and by the end of today we will have a squad that is the envy of the premiership.

You must remember to use TM after any references about the "Bestest, most greatest, best of all, greatest best, best great fans in the whole world and universe TM"......We must not forget that they have patented it even though it is a self proclaimed appraisal by them about them.
I hope this helps you in future referrals about the skunts.

As for Saint Wavey, long memory pasted in a post from some idiot on a rumor site, even put a disclaimer at the start, and you rip into him? WTF
Final rant: Guly lovers they comment on here with passion, but I've yet to meet one in the flesh. I think the first two games of this season, (just the first half against Wigan) he has not been too bad, but come on, he is just a gap on the pitch when we are not in possession, Ramirez or someone else RM needs improvement. On the subject of the report lets hope Yos is as much of a result as Jos has been
