TRANSFER WINDOW CLOSED
10:43pm
DEAL DONE: Midfielder Dean Hammond returns to former club Brighton on loan for the rest of the season. A pivotal part of the lasat three years at Saints so somewhat of a sad day to see a good player and a good bloke leave.
9:42pm

9:15pm
DEAL DONE: Billy Sharp's switch to Nottingham Forest has been confirmed. The striker moves on loan to the Championship club for the rest of the season.
9:04pm
Less than two hours left until the deadline now. We're still waiting to hear if Saints can complete any more deals, while Nottingham Forest are attempting to wrap up their loan move for Billy Sharp before time runs out.
8:44pm
Best signing so far has to be Gaston Ramirez. If only because Lawro said he'd never sign for Saints. Such a shame he's not on MOTD

Adkins talks transfers and looks ahead to Sunday's game with Manchester United:
7:54pm
Saints fans seem to have mixed emotions tonight - absolute delight at the Ramirez signing but sad about the potential departure of Billy Sharp. Would be strange if it happened as Nigel Adkins said categorically and on the record on Tuesday night that no player would leave the club before the deadline, either permanently or on loan.
7:34pm
Billy Sharp off to Nottingham Forest on loan tonight I'm told. #saintsfc

Bit of a recap for those coming in for the evening shift:
- Gaston Ramirez deal 'really close' says Adkins - waiting on Penarol.
- Young American goalkeeper Cody Cropper appears to have joined
- Adkins expects more to happen before 11pm
- Billy Sharp definitely not leaving
- Saints held 'brief' talks with Del Piero yesterday
- Enquiry made by Saints to Chelsea for Benayoun
- Blackpool want Saints to confess to tapping up Phillips
5:29pm
Meanwhile, Forest supporters seem convinced their club is after Billy Sharp to add to their already bulging collection of ex-Saints.
However, we learnt earlier today that Sharp would not be going anywhere. Of course, things can change, but you can probably ignore that rumour too.
5:26pm
Seems a few Saints fans have fallen for a spoof Sky Sports News account saying the Ramirez deal has fallen through.
The account claims it is 'a back-up' for the main SSN account. You've been warned!

Nigel Adkins bingo:
When you get home tonight, pour yourself a drink if you hear an interview with Nigel Adkins using any of these phrases:
- Bus
- Building
- Football Club
- Great set of players
- Worked very hard
4:58pm
Nigel Adkins has described Gaston Ramirez as "a talented, talented footballer. Young, talented, dynamic. Scores goals, creates goals, is at a good age and all being well, will bring some dynanism to our football team."
I have to be honest, I'm not sure dynanism is quite what he means, but you get the jist.
4:51pm
They've taken their time, but the semi-annual "Michael Owen to Saints" rumours are now in full swing.
Believe them if you want, but personally I'm staying well away from them.

I'm led to believe Yossi Benayoun's wages were too high for #Saintsfc and Chelsea were unwilling to subsidise them in a loan deal.

According to reports, Saints have phoned Chelsea to say "thanks, but no thanks" over Yossi Benayoun . Sounds like that's the end of that. What was it that ended it? Price, wages or just not needed?

An odd move that was revealed yesterday involving an ex-Saint you may have forgotten - Richard Wright to Man City.
The 34-year-old keeper was on loan when Nigel Pearson was manager at St. Mary's. He's just left Preston has it was too far from his home in Ipswich.
Manchester is 22 miles nearer.
He had a medical yesterday, although we're still waiting on confirmation of the deal.

Im yet to be convinced by J-Rod, As a Saints fan Im always going to support our players 100% as long as they are trying their best.
£7m + seems a lot to pay for a player we don't seem to be sure if we even need! Fingers crossed he's one for the future!
Clyne = Quality (hope there isn't a release fee in his contract)
Shaw / JPW - Seem to be fitting in nicely, more proof of the strength of our acadamy and youth scouting
Gazza - Give him time, he'll be a good number 2
Yoshida - first scorer and 2-0 Saints at the weekend should make him my new favourite ;)

I don't know who will agree with me, but so far I have been delighted by the players Saints have signed.
I am pleased we have avoided the Premier League experienced journeymen who stroll in for another pay day.
The lower Premier League clubs all seem to recycle the same average premiership players, purely based on experience, even if that experience not remarkable!
We have signed some great talent with super potential, I believe Saints will develop into an exciting team that we can all be proud of.
12:37pm
Elsewhere, Scott Sinclair has left Swansea to take the number 11 shirt at Man City. The fee is £6.2m.
I'd like to try and take some credit for that move, having first signed him on Football Manager 2008. Perhaps I should be scout.

I think Mayuka is a high quality signing. If we want to make it in this league, we must not only succeed on the field but also off the field. In that regard, Mayuka massively increases our marketability in Africa. Just look at all the Zambian supporters jumping on board on FB!
Yoshida is a very shrewd signing, but as an Aussie and Socceroos supporter having seen Japan play several times, I worry how Yoshida will cope with the large Carrol-esque physiques of EPL forwards.

Saints need to get a move on if they want any new signing to make their debut against Manchester United on Sunday.
All players must be registered by 12pm (midday) to be eligible for this weekend's matches. Anyone signed after that will have to wait until after the international break (the Arsenal match) to make their bow.
So if Adkins wants Gaston Ramirez to tear up United's defence, he needs to act quick!

Scouting is one of the key parts of any sucessful club, unearthing gems!

Morning, Yorkie, morning everyone. Exciting day ahead; unless, of course, you support a club at which any player scribbling his signature today is only likely to do so at the foot of a signing-on form at the dole office.
Dare we dream? 1. Ramirez; 2. another of the previously-mentioned centre backs; AND 3. a completely unexpected world-class one?
I can still remember the day Osgood signed. That was topped the day Keegan signed. Will today be another of those days?

When I heard about Keegan (Valentine's Day 1980, wasn't it?), I was walking through Bitterne having just failed my driving test. Oh well, I thought, things could be worse.

The Blackpool winger has put in a transfer request at Bloomfield Road, with Saints supposedly offering in the region of £6m for his services.
However the Seasiders will apparently only sell if Saints admit approaching the player before offering the club a deal, according to the Blackpool Gazette ."
Holloway is a pr**k. They say that they have evidence of it, show it then! Phillips will be out of Blackpool today, the board will not turn down £6m, depends on where the bid comes from.

I phoned Nigel early this morning to remind him we need signings (preferably with lots of Prem style tattoos) to cover BOTH my recommended concave AND convex polygon formations.
Unfortunately, I was put on hold for ever by a recorded message. Unforgiveable - I was even more annoyed than my Auntie Elspeth was in May when she rang a medical line and got the recorded message: "Incontinence Hotline - Can you hold please!

We have signed some great talent with super potential, I believe Saints will develop into an exciting team that we can all be proud of.
Speaking of Football Manager, buying quality under 25 year old players relatively cheaply and building the club on that basis has worked well for me...4 EPL titles in a row at Saints haha.

My attitude is that the secret to success is not buying players with 'premiership experience' per se. But, what you need to drill into the squad is the ability to play 1-2 touch football. This is the difference between the EPL and Championship, and was the difference between us and Wigan last weekend, in spite of us having the better side on paper in my opinion.

What do you think is the likelihood of Saints admitting to 'tapping up' Phillips?
I'm sure we probably did, and accept this as a reality of a money (as opposed to ethics) driven industry. I don't blame NC and NA for this, if indeed they did 'tap up' Phillips. I'd say people are naive to think it doesn't happen far more often than is reported.

The level of expectation surrounding Saints this transfer window has been immense. NC/NA have never tried to lower this expectation indeed it can be said that heavy hints have been dropped there is more to come.
With every hour that passes today the expectation rises. Whilst being very happy with signings to-date I will be immensely disappointed if there no further singings today over and above Ramirez (still not confirmed).
Should no addition players join then the reputation of NC/NA will take a severe knock and suspect it maybe some time before it is fully restored if ever.

I would not argue for a second that both NC & NA have done wonders for the club and I am sure they will continue to so do.
However there was every indication that other "big" signings were on the way and as things stand at the moment this is highly unlikely. It may well be that the protracted negotiations for Ramirez meant that adequate time could not be spent pursuing other targets. Doubt if we will ever know. Having said that over the past few days NA has continued to suggest other significant signings will be made. If these do not happened then clearly NC & NA will have failed in their objective and it it for this reason I have suggested their reputations will take a knock.
True supporters (and I have been one since season 53/54) would prefer to hear the facts of the situation (however unpalatable) than promises made that would be difficult to keep.

I hope for all our piece of mind I hope I have wasted my time posting this!!
John Italy:- How can the reputation of NC/NA take a severe knock after the window we have had. I believe we have signed some good players and spent on quality.
Adkins has said "all being well Ramirez will be a Saints player"... I hope so.
If Ramirez is signed today and nobody else I will still be absolutely delighted. What a window we have hd.
It is great to be a saint.
In the shadowy world of agents/players and bank balances, silence is king.
As regards hearing about "big names" and nothing happens, big tip-believe 50% of all you see and 25% of all that you hear.

Have faith people. Surely Nigel wouldn't have been that coy if their weren't other significant signings other than Ramirez on the horizon!! I'm sure he's smart enough to realise that Saints supporters are not champing at the bit to hear about the signing of Cody Cropper (no offence to the lad). And I am confident it will be a defender/defensive midfielder such as Biglia or Fontas. And if we're lucky, maybe even Phillips!

As alluded to earlier I am expecting a late announcement to get maximum publicity - so expect something around 11.55pm tonight with a very tired looking Cortese, Adkins and Gaston talking to the press.
It's a fantastic bit of theatre - but a bit unfair on all us Saints fans!
Will he be alone - or will there be someone else involved too?

Maybe NA sees it as a chance for him to play regular football in a team who should really be looking for auto promotion and scoring goals rather than warming our bench. NA does know what he can do and as it is only a season-long loan, who's to say he won't be back in a year raring to go and help us in our Euro push. As far as I understand, there is no view to a permanent. Good Luck Billy and hopefully see you in a year.

All week has been a nightmare of will he or won't Ramirez be coming to SMS, but we should all know soon enough.
I wonder if there will be any other bomb shells heading our way?
Have to feel sorry for some of the squad - but perhaps it will make them hungrier and step up to the mark. For some I think a step too far - but others (especially the younger ones) should relish the challenge.
Ola Gaston?
