TRANSFER WINDOW CLOSED

10:43pm

DEAL DONE: Midfielder Dean Hammond returns to former club Brighton on loan for the rest of the season. A pivotal part of the lasat three years at Saints so somewhat of a sad day to see a good player and a good bloke leave.

9:42pm

9:30pm

DEAL DONE:  Young American goalkeeper Cody Cropper has joined Saints. Was released by Ipswich and available on a free. Will be third choice behind Kelvin Davis and Paulo Gazzaniga.

9:15pm

DEAL DONE: Billy Sharp's switch to Nottingham Forest has been confirmed. The striker moves on loan to the Championship club for the rest of the season.

9:04pm

Less than two hours left until the deadline now. We're still waiting to hear if Saints can complete any more deals, while Nottingham Forest are attempting to wrap up their loan move for Billy Sharp before time runs out.

8:44pm

Gary Lineker gives his verdict on Saints' transfer business today, while simultaneously mocking his BBC colleague Mark Lawrenson:

7:57pm

Adkins talks transfers and looks ahead to Sunday's game with Manchester United:

7:54pm

Saints fans seem to have mixed emotions tonight - absolute delight at the Ramirez signing but sad about the potential departure of Billy Sharp. Would be strange if it happened as Nigel Adkins said categorically and on the record on Tuesday night that no player would leave the club before the deadline, either permanently or on loan.

7:34pm

Looks like Billy Sharp might well leave Saints this evening after all - but not permanetly at this stage

Pretty much seems to sum up most Saints fans' feelings tonight

7:05pm

Down the road however:

7:00pm

Ramirez fee to Bologna beleived to be about £12m. More to Penarol. Four year contract. Wages thought to be about £60,000 a week plus a hefty signing on fee.

There are some excited Saints fans out there.

6:57pm

6:57pm

AT LAST - RAMIREZ SIGNS

6:30pm

Bologna announce on their official website that they have agreed a deal with Saints for Gaston Ramirez:

5:55pm

5:36pm

Bit of a recap for those coming in for the evening shift:

  • Gaston Ramirez deal 'really close' says Adkins - waiting on Penarol.
  • Young American goalkeeper Cody Cropper appears to have joined
  • Adkins expects more to happen before 11pm
  • Billy Sharp definitely not leaving
  • Saints held 'brief' talks with Del Piero yesterday
  • Enquiry made by Saints to Chelsea for Benayoun
  • Blackpool want Saints to confess to tapping up Phillips

5:29pm

Meanwhile, Forest supporters seem convinced their club is after Billy Sharp to add to their already bulging collection of ex-Saints.

However, we learnt earlier today that Sharp would not be going anywhere. Of course, things can change, but you can probably ignore that rumour too.

5:26pm

Seems a few Saints fans have fallen for a spoof Sky Sports News account saying the Ramirez deal has fallen through.

The account claims it is 'a back-up' for the main SSN account. You've been warned!

5:23pm

Tancredi Palmeri is a journalist covering Italian football for CNN and Gazzetta dello Sport, and has been all over Bologna end of the Ramirez deal.
Finally looks like it may just have made it over the finish line.

5:19pm

Nigel Adkins bingo:

When you get home tonight, pour yourself a drink if you hear an interview with Nigel Adkins using any of these phrases:

  • Bus
  • Building
  • Football Club
  • Great set of players
  • Worked very hard

Nigel Adkins will be welcoming his squad back to training today

4:58pm

Nigel Adkins has described Gaston Ramirez as "a talented, talented footballer. Young, talented, dynamic. Scores goals, creates goals, is at a good age and all being well, will bring some dynanism to our football team."

I have to be honest, I'm not sure dynanism is quite what he means, but you get the jist.

4:51pm

They've taken their time, but the semi-annual "Michael Owen to Saints" rumours are now in full swing.

Believe them if you want, but personally I'm staying well away from them.

4:43pm

Down the A31, Bournemouth have signed Lorenzo Davids, cousin of bespectacled Dutch star Edgar Davids.

4:23pm

3:48pm

Makes it all worthwhile. Sniff.

3:45pm

We'll have video of Nigel Adkins press conference as soon as we can, so you can judge for yourselves exactly what he's saying - and what he means.

3:36pm

Time for an update on Premier League movements:

  • Berbatov agrees Fulham move
  • Charlie Adam moves to Stoke on four year deal
  • Scott Sinclair swaps Swansea for Man City
  • Clint Dempsey turns down Villa
  • Spurs land Moutinho for a club record £22m
  • Rafael van der Vaart goes to Hamburg for £10m

3:29pm

Hello to the tweeter that says this is like watching your mum on Facebook!

3:28pm

More former Saint news:

3:26pm

More from Adkins: "Before 11pm, I'm sure there could be a little bit more activity. You'll have to wait and see!"

3:23pm

3:15pm

3:11pm

Saints all but confirm Gaston Ramirez deal - not done in time for Man United match, however.

Adkins says: "We are very, very close. All being well, he will become our player."

3:10pm

Controversial.

3:02pm

According to Sky Sports, the biggest news of transfer deadline day is Jim White arriving at work.

Eight hours to go.

2:57pm

Football transfers can seem mysterious cloak and dagger affairs. Perhaps this from the Premier League will help:

Shakeysaint says

Can we have a 5th option on the Rameriez poll please? Something like "Are you getting bored of hearing his name yet??"

2:49pm

The Benayoun link seemed to split Saints fans down the middle. Some thought it showed ambition and that he would be a great addition, whilst others just thought he wasn't needed or wouldn't fit in.

2:45pm

There you go then.

2:44pm

According to reports, Saints have phoned Chelsea to say "thanks, but no thanks" over Yossi Benayoun . Sounds like that's the end of that. What was it that ended it? Price, wages or just not needed?

2:39pm

From signings we're waiting for to one we know is done and dusted.

1:09pm

An odd move that was revealed yesterday involving an ex-Saint you may have forgotten - Richard Wright to Man City.

The 34-year-old keeper was on loan when Nigel Pearson was manager at St. Mary's. He's just left Preston has it was too far from his home in Ipswich.

Manchester is 22 miles nearer.

He had a medical yesterday, although we're still waiting on confirmation of the deal.

Im yet to be convinced by J-Rod, As a Saints fan Im always going to support our players 100% as long as they are trying their best.

£7m + seems a lot to pay for a player we don't seem to be sure if we even need! Fingers crossed he's one for the future!

Clyne = Quality (hope there isn't a release fee in his contract)

Shaw / JPW - Seem to be fitting in nicely, more proof of the strength of our acadamy and youth scouting

Gazza - Give him time, he'll be a good number 2

Yoshida - first scorer and 2-0 Saints at the weekend should make him my new favourite ;)

randre says

I don't know who will agree with me, but so far I have been delighted by the players Saints have signed.

I am pleased we have avoided the Premier League experienced journeymen who stroll in for another pay day.

The lower Premier League clubs all seem to recycle the same average premiership players, purely based on experience, even if that experience not remarkable!

We have signed some great talent with super potential, I believe Saints will develop into an exciting team that we can all be proud of.

12:37pm

Elsewhere, Scott Sinclair has left Swansea to take the number 11 shirt at Man City. The fee is £6.2m.

I'd like to try and take some credit for that move, having first signed him on Football Manager 2008. Perhaps I should be scout.

I think Mayuka is a high quality signing. If we want to make it in this league, we must not only succeed on the field but also off the field. In that regard, Mayuka massively increases our marketability in Africa. Just look at all the Zambian supporters jumping on board on FB!

Yoshida is a very shrewd signing, but as an Aussie and Socceroos supporter having seen Japan play several times, I worry how Yoshida will cope with the large Carrol-esque physiques of EPL forwards.

12:26pm

Could this be the calm before the storm? Whatever it is, why not fill the time watching this video of the signing everyone wants, Gaston Ramirez :

12:18pm

The - incredibly unlikely - move of Walcott to Saints that was rumoured a few weeks ago will not be happening, nor the far more likely move of Walcott to Man City or Liverpool.

The winger had a chat with Wenger this morning and will not be going anywhere today.

12:04pm

For those of you feeling you're missing out on Sky Sports News today, you're mainly missing adverts for PPI claims.

12:01pm

That's the deadline for players to be available for Sunday's game against Manchester United. Have Saints got anyone in today in time? We'll have to wait and see.

11:50am

Premier League Update:

  • Sunderland doing a loan deal for Danny Rose from Spurs.
  • Aston Villa end interest in Clint Dempsey as he only wants to go to Liverpool
  • Nigel De Jong leaves Man City for AC Milan

The excitement of new signings is a double edged sword!
The likely increase in cost of tickets will put many of us out of the game so to speak!
Fantastic times - who remembers people castigating Walker at Blackburn for buying The Premiership. Is the same when it's your team?

11:11am

And all those Saints fans hoping the wild rumours that Alessandro Del Piero was going to join the club may be disappointed. He looks like moving Down Under to Sydney FC.

He's 37 anyway...

11:09am

For what it's worth, Charlton boss Chris Powell was amongst the spectators at the Lamex Stadium on Tuesday night where Hammond captained Saints to a 4-1 Capital One Cup win.

11:08am

The BBC are reporting that Charlton are lining up a move for Saints midfielder Dean Hammond , who was a vital part of the team that won back-to-back promotions but now finds himself down the pecking order.

10:47am

So bit of a recap for those coming in late:

  • Gaston Ramirez deal is rumoured to be imminent
  • Saints have made an enquiry about Benayoun
  • The official club photographer is getting ready for a photoshoot
  • US youngster Cody Cooper has signed for a Premier League team, with many fans thinking it's Saints

10:41am

The tweeter, David Ornstein did work experience at the Daily Echo , for what it's worth.

10:37am

Saints need to get a move on if they want any new signing to make their debut against Manchester United on Sunday.

All players must be registered by 12pm (midday) to be eligible for this weekend's matches. Anyone signed after that will have to wait until after the international break (the Arsenal match) to make their bow.

So if Adkins wants Gaston Ramirez to tear up United's defence, he needs to act quick!

10:23am

Billy Sharp to Derby for £1m? That's what Rams fans think (or hope for, more likely).
It's less than Saints paid for him - would the club be willing to lose £700,000 on him, bearing in mind he's been in good form during pre-season?

10:18am

Premier League Round Up:

  • Brian Oviedo heading to Everton from Copenhagen
  • Liverpool's Charlie Adam at Stoke for medical
  • Aston Villa makemove from Clint Dempsey

10:08am

Cody Cropper is another name being bounced around with Saints. He's a young American goalkeeper, who was released by Ipswich at the end of last season.

For what it's worth, the player (or someone claiming to be him!) has just posted this on Twitter:

10:04am

That tweet is from from Paul Watts, Saints' official club photographer.
I'll let you draw your own conclusions...

10:00am

Right. Just 13 hours left to go. Easy.

Don't forget, the transfer window doesn't close - it SLAMS SHUT.

9:55am

Dino-Saw-Us says

Del Piero that would look so good on the back of a Saints shirt!
Although can't see him even making the 25 these days . . .

We obviously have built a pretty good scouting network, we seem to be having good reports from Holland, Buttner and Yoshida, Switzerland - The Zambian Guy, Looks like we have someone scouting Barcelona? we have been linked with Tello and this CB as well.

Scouting is one of the key parts of any sucessful club, unearthing gems!

9:42am

A player that Saints have been previously linked to is Jay Spearing . It never looked like the most likely of rumours, but he is edging towards dropping to the Championship and joining Bolton Wanderers.

9:41am

Premier League round-up:

Rafael van der Vaart looks set for Hamburg, Nikolas Bendtner is off to Juventus and as you've probably heard, Andy Carroll is on loan at West Ham.

9:33am

9:30am Fri 31 Aug 12

Dino-Saw-Us says

According to SSN deals have to be done by 12 to allow players to be included in this weekends squads.

That's right. Players must always be registered no later than midday on the day before a game. Matches held over a weekend are all considered Saturday matches for that purpose.

9:32am

News from the North West suggests Saints could still land Matt Phillips today - if they admit tapping him up.

The Blackpool winger has put in a transfer request at Bloomfield Road, with Saints supposedly offering in the region of £6m for his services.

However the Seasiders will apparently only sell if Saints admit approaching the player before offering the club a deal, according to the Blackpool Gazette .

9:18am

Talking of Twitter, the Saints fans on there are alive with rumours of the imminent signing of one Alessandro Del Piero .

Madness? Who knows. It's still a good excuse to bring this out:

9:15am

Throughout the day, we want everyone to have their say. You can either add a comment below or if you're on Twitter, use the #saintsfc hashtag and mention @the_saints in your tweet.

9:13am

Of course, everyone loves transfer deadline day - this tweet below is from Pete Devereux, a Saints fan and one half of Southampton garage act Artful Dodger, for those of you who were big into that kind of thing in 2000.
He even revealed the new Saints kit back at The Dell, years ago.

9:10am

9:07am

Plenty of rumours flying around about 22-year-old Andreu Fontas , who is on the books at the Camp Nou.

The Barcelona defender has been linked to Saints in recent days and it seems Malaga have also been tracking him.

9:06am

Good morning and welcome to the Daily Echo's rolling coverage of transfer deadline day.

Hopefully it's going to be a busy one for Saints. Rumours out of Italy overnight suggest the deal for Gaston Ramirez has finally been completed bar the shouting.

Morning all - well here we go for the first time in years I am genuinely excited about the possible in coming players today.
All week has been a nightmare of will he or won't Ramirez be coming to SMS, but we should all know soon enough.
I wonder if there will be any other bomb shells heading our way?
Have to feel sorry for some of the squad - but perhaps it will make them hungrier and step up to the mark. For some I think a step too far - but others (especially the younger ones) should relish the challenge.

Doesn't seem five minutes since we were in League 1 and had to watch this day as relative bystanders. Now we're contenders and can lap up the buzz.

I phoned Nigel early this morning to remind him we need signings (preferably with lots of Prem style tattoos) to cover BOTH my recommended concave AND convex polygon formations.

Unfortunately, I was put on hold for ever by a recorded message. Unforgiveable - I was even more annoyed than my Auntie Elspeth was in May when she rang a medical line and got the recorded message: "Incontinence Hotline - Can you hold please!

I think we have definately unearthed some gems. Yoshida, great signing, i think having T Lee in our squad really helped bringing him to us. I think that Ramirez will be a £20-£30m player after a season in the Prem.

The lower Premier League clubs all seem to recycle the same average premiership players, purely based on experience, even if that experience not remarkable!

We have signed some great talent with super potential, I believe Saints will develop into an exciting team that we can all be proud of.

Over the close season the work put in by Adkins and Cortese has clearly demonstrated the clubs intent to enter the top flight. The team we are building is not a survival team, it's a champions team challenger.

This is not a rose tinted comment it's a fact. This team is going places.

It's time the world accepted this.

That's a quality post mate. I really support the approach of buying young talent and moulding and building a team. Do we really want to be another QPR with a Mark Hughes at the helm thinking he's playing Football Manager, signing practically an entirely new starting 11?!!

Speaking of Football Manager, buying quality under 25 year old players relatively cheaply and building the club on that basis has worked well for me...4 EPL titles in a row at Saints haha.

Just another comment on randre's post above....

My attitude is that the secret to success is not buying players with 'premiership experience' per se. But, what you need to drill into the squad is the ability to play 1-2 touch football. This is the difference between the EPL and Championship, and was the difference between us and Wigan last weekend, in spite of us having the better side on paper in my opinion.

Dan Kerins,

What do you think is the likelihood of Saints admitting to 'tapping up' Phillips?

I'm sure we probably did, and accept this as a reality of a money (as opposed to ethics) driven industry. I don't blame NC and NA for this, if indeed they did 'tap up' Phillips. I'd say people are naive to think it doesn't happen far more often than is reported.

Yes, some of them take a while and hit the occasional obstacle, but generally we choose quality, build effectively and get value for money.

Southampton will be challenging for European football in the future, should be be able to consolidate this season.

Would love for an Aussie to sign with the Saints. Harry could definitely add some class and finishing ability coming off the bench. Don't know if he'd be up to the pace of the EPL sufficiently to be a starter at his age. But an excellent finisher, and far better in that regard than anyone we've got at the moment (bar Ramirez, fingers crossed).

Thought there was a 2pm press conference. Is it happening?

The level of expectation surrounding Saints this transfer window has been immense. NC/NA have never tried to lower this expectation indeed it can be said that heavy hints have been dropped there is more to come.

With every hour that passes today the expectation rises. Whilst being very happy with signings to-date I will be immensely disappointed if there no further singings today over and above Ramirez (still not confirmed).

Should no addition players join then the reputation of NC/NA will take a severe knock and suspect it maybe some time before it is fully restored if ever.

Hot inside info....

Rumoured at St Marys that a new rumour will be announced at 3.45pm and the 2.45pm rumour will be officially dismissed as 'just a rumour'.

Trying to find out if the new rumour is 'official' or 'unofficial', but rumour is it will be the former.

In the meantime, this last piece is nothing more than a rumour about the rumour which is rumoured to be coming out. The rest is rock solid though.

I hope for all our piece of mind I hope I have wasted my time posting this!!
Even if we don't sign Ramirez this will be our biggest transfer window ever.
Absolutely Seedhouse.

John Italy:- How can the reputation of NC/NA take a severe knock after the window we have had. I believe we have signed some good players and spent on quality.

Adkins has said "all being well Ramirez will be a Saints player"... I hope so.

If Ramirez is signed today and nobody else I will still be absolutely delighted. What a window we have hd.

It is great to be a saint.
If Ramirez signs (and I am now confident he will) I will be absolutely delighted. It certainly shows the club's intentions and lays down a marker to other Premiership sides.

I would not argue for a second that both NC & NA have done wonders for the club and I am sure they will continue to so do.

However there was every indication that other "big" signings were on the way and as things stand at the moment this is highly unlikely. It may well be that the protracted negotiations for Ramirez meant that adequate time could not be spent pursuing other targets. Doubt if we will ever know. Having said that over the past few days NA has continued to suggest other significant signings will be made. If these do not happened then clearly NC & NA will have failed in their objective and it it for this reason I have suggested their reputations will take a knock.

True supporters (and I have been one since season 53/54) would prefer to hear the facts of the situation (however unpalatable) than promises made that would be difficult to keep.

Have faith people. Surely Nigel wouldn't have been that coy if their weren't other significant signings other than Ramirez on the horizon!! I'm sure he's smart enough to realise that Saints supporters are not champing at the bit to hear about the signing of Cody Cropper (no offence to the lad). And I am confident it will be a defender/defensive midfielder such as Biglia or Fontas. And if we're lucky, maybe even Phillips!

Still not on the OS - but can't be far off.
As alluded to earlier I am expecting a late announcement to get maximum publicity - so expect something around 11.55pm tonight with a very tired looking Cortese, Adkins and Gaston talking to the press.

NA does know what he can do and as it is only a season-long loan, who's to say he won't be back in a year raring to go and help us in our Euro push. As far as I understand, there is no view to a permanent. Good Luck Billy and hopefully see you in a year.

I may be swimming against the tide here but I never saw Billy as being fast enough for the Premiership. I suspect he'll have a much better season at Forest than he would have had with us.

Very disappointed to see Billy Sharp heading off...not really sure why him and not De Ridder, Guly or others. Hope to see him back in a Saints shirt in 12 months!

Well thats that for a while would have liked to see another defender and what happened to the signing tht nobody expected, ramirez was not exactly unexpected. Sorry to see Deano and Billy go out on season loan. Bring on the Devils for the Saints to prove good always beats Evil.COYR

Apart from Ramirez, actually a bit underwhelmed with todays dealings.

I fear for our goals against column. We''ll just have to score 3 every game and hope that's enough!

Some excellent signings. Am very impressed with Clyne. Still think we are a little short in defence.

@officialsaints: So that's us done for the summer transfer window. What's your verdict on the business conducted over the past four months? #saintsfc

Bit disappointed if that is it. Hard season ahead with an unfamiliar system

very disappointed in NA for offloading Billy. Don't know what Billy has done to deserve being treated so shodily.

I think you mean "Billy Sharp was YOUR man."

We dont know that sharp was settled he has gone back up north at the first chance and following him on twitter he is always going back up to visit friends and family. We cant cast judgement on NA or NC without knowing all the facts surley.

On a lighter note shame Guly didnt go ...........

Re Billy not having the ace for the premiership, Sir RL doesn't have much pace either but he has other qualities that make him the better bet to score and create in the premiership. I always worried that Billy would struggle against prem defences although hoped that his 'fox in the box' ability would see him through. I would have liked to see how he fared for us this season but sadly not to be. I wish him all the best and good luck for the future. Football is indeed a ruthless business, particularly at the top.

Will always remember that Billy's goals helped get us where we are today. For that he is a true Saint.

I must agree with you. I think he would have struggled to get game time at Southampton, especally with our new signings.

Best move for him, he is too good to play reserves, but I fear he is not quite PL!
