Fox: We need to show more steel Fox: We need to show more steel

Danny Fox has called on Saints to show greater character and steel following their crushing defeat at Arsenal.

The left-back, who was gifted the visitors’ solitary strike in a 6-1 drubbing at the Emirates Stadium, admitted the loss, as well as the performance, was tough to take.

“Everyone’s down,” said Fox. “It’s just disappointing the manner we got beat. We just need to show a bit more steel and a bit more character, especially when you go two or three-nil down.

“But we have to look at the positives. Obviously, the gaffer will say that as well. But we need to start getting results – we’re four games in now and we’ve still got no points on the board.”

Fox conceded that there is always the prospect that Saints will struggle against the teams who inhabit the upper echelons of the division.

“We’re playing against top players and you get punished against these top teams,” he said. “All they need is one chance.”

Unfortunately for Saints, the stats showed that Arsenal created far more than just one opportunity – to be exact, it was 20.

Nigel Adkins ’ side were duly punished, even if some of the Arsenal strikes had a hint of good fortune about them.

“You look at the goals that we had against us today, two of them were own goals, one’s deflected off the post and gone back to one of their players,” said Fox. “It just didn’t seem to fall for us. But I think you make your own luck in this league as well.

“You can go on about getting punished and whatever as long as we want, but we should have seen the game out against Man United (two weeks ago), no matter who was on the pitch or what had happened.

“We need to show a bit more character and believe that we can play at this level. We are good enough to be here I think.”

Cue keyboard attack on Fox. Give the guy a break and let's stick together and cheer on the team (every one of them) from here on in.

Most disappointing performance for some time! Yes Arsenal were different class, but we made it easy for them. Defending was, at times amateurish. Too many times our defenders were pulled out of position. Mid field did not get back quickly enough to help out. And, much as I love Kelv for all he has done for us, I think its time for him to stand down. His handling and positioning seems to have deserted him. We have no one with Prem experience in the squad.
Big respect to Theo and the Ox for coming and saluting Saints fans at the end.
Villa, be afraid, be very afraid.

How can you leave a £7 MILION player on the bench crazy decision

Character and back bone is going to be important during this season, most worrying part of Saturday was the positional sense of both defence and midfield , 2 goals stemmed from balls threaded between the centre halfs and full backs, we need to be far more compact and difficult to play through . Hope that the confidence of the players has not affected by the result cos although we have no points we have played well during periods of all the games and as a footnote in the season 90/91 sheff utd took 5 points from their first 16 games but still finished in 13th place , 12 points clear of the relegation spots , keep the faith ,show some belief and back the management and players

Exactly.

The day will now be littered with the usual comments about Adkins, defenders and so on.

The fact remains we have played three of the top four clubs in the country. Most clubs will have similar results agains those clubs by the end of the season.

The only way is up and I remain, alongside all the true Saints supporters, confident that we will be many rungs higher on the ladder by the time this season is finished.

Why are we forgetting about the small matter of losing to Wigan? At home?

Yes we lost to 3 amazing Premiership teams, but also to Wigan who, with respect we should have been able to deal with better.

I love Southampton FC, and we need to be honest in our evaluations and in my opinion shipping goals at the near post on nearly every goal we've conceded is not good enough at all. KD has been amazing and I for one would like to see him stay at the club and earn a coaching role, but we need a better quality of keeper to inspire and lead from the back, with a commanding presence and a better technique.

So should we be looking at the Bosman market for a goalkeeper?

Too true.the defence has taken a battering in all 4 premiership matches this season and via the daily echo website.but what about the punchless-no pun intended Jason-midfield.oh for a midfield enforcer a la JIMMY CASE,TERRY HURLOCK or BRIAN O'NEAL.IT IS TIME FOR THE WHOLE SQUAD TO ROLL UP THE SLEEVES AND GET BATTLING AND EARN THOSE HIGH WAGES.

Same way you leave a £12m player on the bench? You do not select players on the basis of their value. You select them on the basis of performance in the last game and in training.

What we will find is a goalkepper that has been considered not good enough by his previous club, demanding high wages and has not trained for about 6 months. We've bought two goalkeepers to back up Kelvin. Lets not forget the good saves he has made this season. Two penalty saves as well!!

Suggest we wait for a few games yet before allowing the knees to jerk upward.

I will make a comment on the defenders. Sorry, but not good enough, yes keep working on getting better, but I personally don't think they're good enough (My opinion and please don't shout me down for that!). Also Dan, next time you are on Sky TV, can you take that chewing gum out of your mouth!?

No Danny, we need a new LB, great crosser, awful defender, if you think hovering around in the box when people are running down the wing is defending your a fool. Hope your injured soon and Shaw will replace!

Don't get me wrong KD's contribution to the saints cause has been second to none for many years, especially his loyalty and I'm not questioning that, I'm basing my opinions on fact and honesty. Yes he has saved 2 penalties, 2 poorly taken penalties, and has made some good saves but can you honestly say that these make up for all the near post goals we've conceded already? I like KD and want to see a professional like him at Southampton after his playing career has finished, but I feel a new GK can help.

This isn't a knee jerk reaction, I've watched us make the same mistakes in L1 and the Championship, the difference is that we are now in arguably the best league in the world and you will get punished for school boy errors.....

Maybe I'm wrong.......
