Adam Lallana ’s England call-up has inspired Rickie Lambert to earn himself a place in the national
The striker watched with delight as his teammate earned a late selection for last week’s World Cup qualifier against Ukraine.
Lambert revealed that Lallana’s international recognition has given him further hope that he can achieve the same thing while at Saints.
“It does,” he said. “But I’ll always say, it’s a cliché, but all I’m focused on is doing well for Southampton .
“Obviously, it does give you hope. Adam plays for Southampton and he has been called up. I have to concentrate on my game and whatever comes then fine.
“Whether I get it or not, it is brilliant news for Adam.”
Lambert, at the age of 30, is making his first foray into the Premier League this season and has already found the net twice – against Manchester City
and Manchester United no less.
Having scored 90 goals since arriving at St Mary’s three years ago, the front man is confident that he has the necessary ability to give him a chance of breaking into the England set-up.
“I do – obviously, there are lots of other people who will say the same thing,” he said.
“There are a few other people who are just as good, but obviously I believe in myself and I’m looking to improve.
“It’s my first season in this league and I’ll be hoping to improve by experience as well. Let’s just see.”
